Image Extension not allowed?

I'm trying to post something involving a lot of images but I am denied to submit the post because of an extension not allowed. Which one? I have a million images on this post! Can anyone get me a list of what works and what doesn't?

And I worked so hard on that post too...

The strange thing, is that it's inconsistent. Do you see that little Sonic running on my signature? The image was denied at first because of a "bad extension" bad I did it again days later and it somehow worked. The SAME image.

Am I doing something wrong or is this a thing caused by the server wipe and the forum trying to stabilize itself again?

Or is my comprehension on what "Image Extension" means completely wrong?

Look at the URLs of the pictures you're trying to post and make sure they all end in a valid extension. It's pretty easy to accidentally choose an image that doesn't end with an extension at all.

In fact, you could post all the images here in this thread as either links of in code tags so we'd be able to try and see what's up.

Yeah, you're going to have to tell us what images you're referring to in URL form to help you.

Just a couple of things to keep in mind.

  • Make sure there actually is an image extension. (.jpg, .png, .gif, etc.) - This sounds obvious, but you wouldn't believe how often this tends to be the case.
  • Make sure there are no modifiers to the image extension (i.e. "jpg:large")

IPB can't read images with those conditions, so you might have to save them in other ways.

If you take pictures from imgur/twitter/facebook, sometimes they don't end in .jpg or .png. If they don't then you need to actually go to the specific image and not the site it's being held on. Also, sometimes images have ;Large at the end to signify it's a large version of the image. You need to remove this portion.

So basically make sure it ends in .jpg or .png.

Only the following image extensions are allowed within the IMG tag: gif, jpeg, jpg, png. :)

Edit: I can try adding gifv and webm in the future but I'm nervous that might be abused pretty badly.

At the risk of sounding dumb, what is a gifv and webm format?

Gifv is a custom format by imgur which compresses overly large and long gif files into a more compressed video format.

Webm is also compressed video format, only it can contain audio and is generally a royalty-free option to the HTML5 video tag. They can be pretty CPU intensive though.

Yeah, I'd be a little hesitant to implement those myself, but given how much the memberbase uses Imgur, the former might be a good idea.

That opens the floodgates for a lot of abuse, though, and of the most obnoxious kind.
