Sonic Deserves to Die?

Faseeh

Recommended Posts

When this video popped up on my subscription box, I was quite... shocked.

Outside of the fanbase, a lot of people have said that Sonic deserves to die, but to me, I completely disagree with this fact but maybe I'm a bit biased. To me, I know this series can survive, it's had great ideas, it still has hope, things like Unleashed, Colors and Generations proved it to me that the series still has it. To me, Lost World is like that unexpected accident, but I do hope things get better.

What about you? Do you agree with this video?

Gametrailers is full of hypocrites. They said "Sonic Colors was an improvement over recent Sonic outings", then proceeded to bash it and have it a lower score than previous games.

Of course he can't die. Sonic's a fictional character. :v

Jokes aside, are we really surprised at this? I mean, this has been going on for years now . Probably over the past 8 years now. It's kinda sad too. I hate it when the things I like is constantly bashed too the point that I question myself if I should continue to like it. Hey, that's what happens when you constantly make crappy decisions in a well known franchise. It becomes popular to dislike it.

To be honest, I don't think it's going away anytime soon.

No, I don't agree with this. I don't think the okay Sonic Lost World, and awful Sonic Boom are signs of a new dark age for Sonic. There simply isn't enough material to pronounce Sonic dead.

Oh great GameTrailers is bashing Sonic once again. >>

Sonic doesn't deserve to die, but what he does deserve is a long break. Sega AND Sonic Team need to really think about what makes Sonic good and why people play those games, work upon those strengths and release a game that doesn't have stupid gimmicks tagged on to it, has a great plot and characters and make it feel bigger and better than any other Sonic game out there. Also, physics!

Ah yes, the same exact bullshit that's been around since 06 was released.

I'm not even mad, just tired. Tired of hearing the same exact things being said over and over again, like do these people even know how repetitive this has become?

But yeah, completely disagree. Sonic doesn't need to die but rather as some have said, needs more time to plan out on what they're actually gonna make. Like that makes a lot more fucking sense than just flat out end the series, but lol fuck that 06 and RoL were bad games so might as well end the series.

Colors and Generations were "illusions"? Yeah, that makes sense especially the review scores totally shows proof of this.....

But no seriously, this kind of shit needs to stop because this isn't going to help anyone. Doesn't help the fans nor SEGA or Sonic Team. How does this help anyone especially since Sonic is SEGA's moneymaker.

Can someone please call them out on their bullshit.

They really need to just stop milking him every year. That would fix pretty much everything in all likelihood.

I for one think next year's game will probably be awesome, simply because it will have had FIVE years of development. If it can't kick ass like Unleashed did, I'm not sure what can.

I'm not suprised that Sonic ended up in these sorts of videos again...

...What I am suprised is that this sort of rubbish is said over and over and over and over and over again.

Echoing the others, Sonic does need a break, SEGA admited they 'betrayed' the fans, now they need to figure out how they need to make a good game again, and for that, the Blue Blur needs a break.

Though actually, thinking on it, SEGA doesn't even need to give Sonic a break. They just need to put up the funds to ensure a good deal of development and time goes into every single title.

Consider the Marvel films. They come out in insanely rapid succession and several are being made at any one point in time, and they don't suffer for it. Because Disney put in the initial funding necessary to make sure each one got the attention it needed to be a quality product.

The same could be done with a game franchise. Sonic doesn't necessarily need gaps between games to be good... he just needs a lot more care and investment than he's currently getting.

I'm just amazed a company would let its mascot be dragged through the dirt so easily.

I would agree with that, but again like I've said it's like Sonic Team and Sega have no idea what they are doing with the series. In the past two years alone they cranked out a deal of making their immediate next slew of Sonic games exclusive to Nintendo systems and then launching another brand of the series for Western audiences, both of which didn't pay off for the most part . Future Sonic games could have all of the resources in the world and it wouldn't amount to anything if the design briefs for them each are consistently shoddy in execution (if not downright questionable in concept altogether).

Unless Sega/Sonic Team take a few moments (read: years) to stop and think about how they want the series to progress, they're just going to continue cranking out games for the series without the necessary short-term and long-term direction both of them. And unless their management gets an overhaul (which may be imminent for Sega with the new CEO, but not so much for Sonic Team) they definitely don't seem to be in a position to learn while they are still chugging along, the aforementioned Nintendo exclusive partnership and Boom sub-series are proof of that despite the positive reception of Colors and Generations.

EDIT: For comparison's sake, note how after Midway lapsed into bankruptcy and was snatched up by Warner Bros, Marvel Studios used that downtime to figure out what did and didn't work for the Mortal Kombat series, following the average/poor reception of that earlier decade's worth of Mortal Kombat games. The studio resurfaced in 2011 -as NetherRealm Studios- with Mortal Kombat (9), which was largely agreed to be a return to form for the series.

well if sonic dies, then some people are going to start making money off of their sonic fan-characters

Heh, touche' I totally forgot about that scene.

I don't think Sega should take a break from the sonic brand. They could still do the merchandise, comics, and shows. ( As Senor Gabe pointed out) Maybe releasing some small games on 3ds/mobile is fine. I think taking a break from sonic games on home consoles is the right thing to do. We were on the right path to goodness when generations and colors came along. Unfortunately, ever since Sonic Boom wii u was released, both of those games are treated like illusions ( Sonic Lost World too). So I'm all for sonic games being on a hiatus at this point.

I can't help but wonder if the "Unleashed/Generations" branch of Sonic Team have been silent since 2011/12 with the sole purpose of rethinking everything and crafting together a new angle on the series. Runners and Boom both feel like distractions.

I'm sort of lethargic to these sort of articles and videos.  It's their opinion, even if it is poorly presented.  Like, hate Sonic?  Great!  Think he should drop off the face of the earth?  Lovely!  What bothers me is the stupid, click bait nature people go about doing it.  It's just bad writing in every meaning of the word.

Here we go again with these stupid videos.

If you don't like Sonic, good for you. How about you just ignore the games rather than claiming he's had nothing but shit for the last 15 years and he needs to die despite having great handheld games, and having a pickup with Unleashed, Colours, and Generations. Even if I don't like Lost World that much, I'm not going to pretend it's awful or anything, it's just really meh which stinks of experimentation.

I hate these videos. End of story.

Well, if that's the case, that half of Sonic Team now have a steep uphill battle to convince consumers their new angle for Sonic works, due to the damage Lost World (from the Colors half of Sonic Team) and the Sonic Boom games did in the interim (Runners too, concerning its worldwide launch anyway). Which I assume wouldn't had happened if people inside Sonic Team or Sega had the clout on giving the series the red light while said angle rethinking was in place. It's no different as to when Sonic Team USA were busy churning out Shadow the Hedgehog, while Sonic Team Japan started drafting up what would become Sonic 2006 around the same time.

As long as a series has potential, I do not believe that it should die. For example, Call Of Duty is commonly brought up as a series that should go burn in the deepest pits of hell, but I don't believe that it should, as I think it has potential to be something greater than an annual cash cow. And for the most part, Treyarch try to go as far with it as possible in terms of innovation, so I definitely think it should stick around. As for Sonic, while he has an incredibly shaky reputation, I still firmly believe that the series has potential, and that killing it would just be a waste. The issue isn't inherently Sonic as Colours and Generations proved, in fact, I think mishaps like Sonic Boom are down to SEGA (though hopefully their newfound obsession over the word 'quality' signifies a change on that front).

In regard to that video, it's simply click bait. People know that fans will lose their shit over it, as well as share the video around.

Really, I'm just surprised that they think Assassin's Creed deserves to die more than Sonic does.

Alternative title: GameTrailers makes a click bait video.

Dude, a topic was already made out of this...

wait what there was!?

Why? I don't get why people give these things attention anymore. All they are are are dates on a calendar in which they need to pump out a filler video.

Yet every time one comes out some people treat it like it's a serious thing that should have attention paid.

When in reality all that it is is literally "We need a video. Make it a top 10 video of *insert subject here* dont take too long to make it."

Screw them, for NOT putting Call of Duty and Need for Speed on the list. CoD should be #2 even.
