Anybody remember Medabots? show that aired in the US between 1999-2000 that had kids battling with robots with personality?

Yeah well throw that out the window, because this ain't the Medabots you remember:

Medabots: Girls Mission is an upcoming action game and similar to the other entries of the series, it’ll come in Kabuto and Kuwagata versions. The character designs are being handled by Sai Izami with Medabots designed by Rin Hahoru.

The game features over 20 girls that will make appearances as characters, and a story that involves the fight in winning the top of the Medabots tournament called “Artemis Cup.”

You’ll get to team up with a girl buddy and friendship levels increase as you work together. As your bond increases, the buddy’s Medabots become stronger as well. Both Kabuto and Kuwagata versions have different girls, including ones that are exclusive as well.

Medabots: Girls Mission will release in Japan on March 10, 2016 for Nintendo 3DS. It’ll go for 5,800 yen plus tax.

Kabuto Ver. and Kuwagata Ver. star different protagonists.

Famitsu has gone up with its debut online preview of Medabots: Girls Mission, Rocket Company’s newly announced 3DS game.

Medabots: Girls Mission Medabots: Girls Mission

Medabots: Girls Mission depicts a battle drama where players will compete to win the “Artemis Cup” Medabots tournament. Over 20 girls will appear in the game.

The game will ship in two versions. Kabuto Ver. follows a story set in the Joyou Agricultural High School, while Kuwagata Ver. follows a story set in Teikou High School. Each version stars a different protagonist—a girl from its respective high school—plus a Medabot.

Robattles are two-on-two team matches. Your Medabots’ abilities are linked to the A, B, X, and Y buttons, and you can win against the other team by destroying their robots’ heads or causing them cease function. You’ll also fight alongside a “Buddy” character and her Medabot, and and while you can’t control them, their abilities will increase each time you battle.

Medabots: Girls Mission is due out for 3DS on March 10 in Japan.

Fresh details about Medabots Girl Mission have emerged from Famitsu. As previously mentioned, the game is launching very soon in Japan: March 10.

Like previous Medabots games, two versions are planned: Kabuto and Kuwagata. The former features a story in Joyou Agricultural High School whereas the latter takes place in Teikou High School. Kabuto stars Minori Houjou (voiced by Ibuki Kido) and has Metabee. Kuwagata features Kaidou Megumi (voiced by Aya Suzaki) and has Rokusho.

More than 20 girls are included in Medabots Girl Mission. It’ll follow the path that players take to compete in the Artemis Cup tournament.

Here’s the lineup of characters and medabots confirmed in Famitsu:

– Mizuho Tanigawa (VA: Saki Ogasawara), medabot: Pompom Mates, Kabuto exclusive (Minori’s buddy)
– Tsubasa Nanahoshi (VA: Ayane Sakura), medabot: Pepper Cat
– Ichiko Tsurugi (VA: Sarah Emi Bridcutt), medabot: Blues Dog
– Rico Sakata (VA: Minami Fujii), medabot: Mad Juggler
– Sakura Gotou (VA: Shiki Aoki), medabot: Kanehachi mark 2
– Shouko Shiratori (VA: Yu Asakawa), medabot: Daichanko
– Koi Nishikino (VA: Mari Shiraishi), medabot: Gokudo
– Shikkoku no Yami [Pitch-Black Darkness] (VA: Eriko Nakamura ), medabot: Mineruver
– Asumi Naruko (VA: Kana Asumi), medabot: Ninninja
– Sayuri Kunishiro (VA: Rina Kitagawa), medabot: Scimitar Tooth
– Kiyomi Shigeno (VA: Hiromi Igarashi), medabot: Top Gunner
– Kei Musumi (VA: Nao Touyama), medabot: Steinberger
– Yuri Yasuragi (VA: Sayaka Gomi), medabot: Brynhildr
– Arisu Tsuchimikado (VA: Ai Kakuma), medabot: Arachno Spider
– Shizuka Minamoto (VA: Lynn) medabot: Samurai
– Laura Bathory (VA: Ayumi Fujimura), medabot: Whip World
– Ran Suzukaze (VA: Yu Kobayashi), medabot: Bulb Blue
– Toki Masou (VA: Izumi Chiba), medabot: Roll Beauty, Kuwagata exclusive (Megumi’s childhood friend)

Medabots Girl Mission is considered to be a spin-off. Unlike the numbered series which have been command-based RPGs, this one will be action-based instead, where you can actually control the Medabots’ movements and attacks. Players will compete in Robattles in 2 vs. 2 matches with the A, B, X, and Y buttons.

In terms of features, local and online multiplayer is planned. The game supports up to four players in wireless team battles as well as co-op for the story mode. Battles can also be done through the Internet as two players square off against each other – either with friends or randomly.

More than 100 Medabots and parts for customization will be included in the game. Players can use different parts for the head, arms, and legs, each of which has its own skills. By winning fight, you’ll receive new parts and points that can be used to enhance Medabots abilities.

Work on Medabots Girl Mission is 90 percent complete.

Looks innocent enough right? well guess what, its not:

It seems like many of our fans suspicions were correct – Rocket Company’s Medabots: Girls Mission isn’t simply adopting a girl-focused story for the heck of it – they’re putting in ample doses of fanservice!

In a new preview (via 4Gamer), we get to see the clothing destruction system implemented in the upcoming Cero C-rated game.

In the game, you can fill up your special attack meter, which lets you perform a “Medaforce” attack. Coming from this, you can do a “Medaforce Burst” attack by filling your meter to 200%.

When you dish out a finishing hit with this attack, a special command window appears, letting you perform a “Hyper Finish,” which lets you destroy the clothes of your opponent. Each girl and her Medabot will have their own unique scene in this mechanic.

Finally, the “Ogre Maxim” is a new feature that greatly improves your Medabot’s prowess. This feature can be used only once per battle, with parts coming in at lower points giving longer and greater effects.

This increases your various parts abilities, shortening cooldowns, as well as increasing your Medaforce Gauge.

So...yeah...you guys ready for this?

I remember Medabots growing up, but I never expected it to come back. Especially like this... I don't know what to think of this.

However, this could explain why the Medabots games got re-released on Virtual Console.

...The hell?

That's all I would say because I can't think of anything else to say in response to this, but I don't think SSMB's rules would let me do that.

This is probably the most out of nowhere thing I've heard in the past year and it almost feels like some kind of april fools joke. Its like they took medabots and decided to add senran kagura to it and throw out all the intrestingly designed characters from before. On the one hand, i'm glad we're getting another game that isn't a strategy RPG (or whatever the heck medabots infinity was supposed to be) but man this feels off.

Also, i'm calling it now, if this gets released in the US I can already see everyone and their mother comparing this to LBX.

Actually I think its just its publisher. "Imagineer" pulled a Konami and focuses on mobiles now so all their previous IPs are dust.

A new Medabots game isn't surprising since the last one was around the launch window of the 3DS but man, this is really dumb. I was gonna give it the benefit of the doubt that the game was made for female players who never really ever play a Medabots game but as soon the new of "you can rip your opponent's clothes" came up, it really ruined my hype for this game. How is destroying a Medabot make the clothes get destroyed? It doesn't make any sense.

It may be really stupid but that doesn't stop it from being a genius idea. The developers are betting soley on the power of boners and since Medabots was for kids anyway, aiming at the sllightly older kids, possibly the same ones who liked Medabots in the past, with the promise of a sim game and fighting robots is diabolical to say the least.

It's jarring to me because Digimon's transition to more mature audiences was handled more confidently then whatever the hell this is. If it's going to focus more on extremexxxxsssss fanservice then competent gameplay, then it might as well not be worth bothering.

This sounded so cool and promising and then they royally botched it by adding crappy 'battle fan service'. Can't folks get a game about cool robots and girls working together to kick ass that doesn't have this kind of nonsense? I mean, come on, the folks behind this would have been better off making their own ecchi filled robot battle IP rather than used an old kids show to lure the nostalgia lovers and ecchi fans.

Wow

This is the first time I've seen Medabots in /years/

I'm not sure how popular it was in Japan but it obviously died out in the West when the series ended here. I did like it for the most part but it did fade off the face of the earth. I'd check this game out though, even if its girly as fuck if it comes to the West.

While I agree entirely, fighting robots and nekked wimminz is admittingly one of the best ways to capitalize on the success of a series targeted primarily towards boys. Its success is pitching on 1) horny teenaged boys (and maybe girls) and 2) the aged up fans of the series who've got bling to ching. It's evil but hey, evil gets things done sometimes  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I just found out about this. This is a pretty long analysis, so I'm gonna spoiler it for the sake of not stretching out the page.

Spoiler

Did you read the part about me mentioning that the devs would have been better off making a new IP with the same elements? Because I know exactly why this is made... thing is if they wanted the nostalgia bait and the ecchi bait I think Robopon probably would have worked better since some of their female bots are already blatantly 'sexy'. If you wanted the ecchi fans fully behind this all you needed to do is swap the kids out and put your ladies of desire in. Then you'll have sexy robot ladies and sexy human ladies.

Initially I couldn't really see this as anything other than an attempt to retool the franchise towards towards current trends / tastes to the demographic about moe personification or whatever.

Then the bit about the girl's clothes getting ripped in battle came up, and now I'm kinda expecting this to turn out to be something akin to Transformers: Kiss Players...

Also, when the bit about clothes being blown off was revealed, the games jumped from the 390/460-area to 39/40 at the Amazon.jp ranking. So the developers are doing something right.

To quote a GAF member, at least the series will go out on a high note. And by "high note", I mean the squeal of a high school girl getting her clothes blown off.

My response stated exactly why the idea works so well.

Thing is, Robopon, which already sounds dangeriously close to a pun on Roboporn, isn't popular enough to bank on that type of success as effectively as Medabots would.

well uh

hm

didn't know about the clothing destruction

Despite not minding it I probably wouldn't be able to play this game with a clear conscious so... Pass.

I originally didn't have an issue with this due to it sounding like the previous game but advertising it more for a female audience (I know that Medabots aren't just for guys but I meant marketing wise) and maybe even letting people see the story through another point of view kind of thing

Then they added in Clothes Destruction.

Look, Senran Kagura can get away with it because it was built with it and it's mostly tounge-in-cheek humorous more than fanservice IMO and can be skipped. But that's not why people play those games. Stop trying to take that without understanding that the series for the fans is looked more at for its combat and story (at least the 3DS games). Omega Quintet did the same thing, an idol JRPG with Clothes Destruction. Unless you're making a game where it makes sense like DoA with both male and females or something like SK where it makes sense but is also more of just a humorous part, stop it.

How would you know? You could go full ham with Robopon than with Medabots because those elements wouldn't come out nowhere and you could play it up as a silly comedy thing of sort. And it had three games under it's belt that I believe did O.K. so who knows actually how popular it is in Japan?

But anyway I'm still standing by my original point that they were better off making a new IP rather than goofing around with an old kids TV show that didn't have that sort of stuff that most people couldn't really give two hoots about.

Because #1, Medabots is a franchise consisting of several video games across several platforms spanning several years, a TV show, and manga. It was a quint essential cartoon for young boys. Robopon's six games that they stopped making after 2002  and that I haven't even heard of until today don't compare. With that in mind, you can't say that the implementing the features presented in this game would work better in an obscure series that's been abandoned for over a decade than it would in something that's been reseinated in people's minds for nearly two decades and has the ability to appeal to both new and returning fans.

Well you can but you'd be dead wrong.

Well shows what I know about Medabots didn't know it had that many things in it's favour. I thought it just had an anime and a tie in game and that's about it. (This is why if your not sure or your memory is shit use google.)

Anyway I'm out for now. I'm already getting stressed and angry so I'll let this be.

To be fair, Medabots's games are incredibly obscure and in terms of cultural relevance it's like barely more iconic than Fighting Foodons/Bistro Recipe. Arguing Medabots has even any staying power in the west (or the east, frankly) besides an incredibly niche fanbase and people who remember it alongside like five other interchangeable mon-shows is a tough hill to climb.

BEYBLADE has more staying power than Medabots. Hell, Battle B-Daman is bottom of the barrel and is slightly more multi-generational than Medabots. The best thing you can say about Medabots's current direction, if you'e being serious, is "At least it's not Kiss Players."

Aww I used to like Medabots. Always watched this on tv. <3

Uh oh, this game tho. Moment I saw the Japanese rating I knew it was going to be some kind of Ecchi game a la Senran Kagura. Wtf this is like if Beyblade or Monster Rancher decided to put fanservice and moe shit in their games!

I CLIMB HILLS FOR BREAKFAST.

I'm sorry...

I'm really arguing that Medabots would make it bigger as a friendship is magic/softcore H game than Robopon. I mean, to be honest I didn't even know Medabots was a franchise until after this conversation, nor did I know it took the Pokemon route with the development of the anime. But I was only fairly certain Medabots was pretty popular amoung the boys demographic.
