Titles says it all, at this point it's not a great idea to update your Wii, even if you don't have home brew channel installed, it can get bricked.

The damage will presumably be permanent.

is there a warranty agreement someone that in a case of firmware fuck ups they'll fix your wii?

I'm far too late to be constructing coherent posts but until further notice, or until absolutely necessary I would avoid doing the update.

Oops, too late for me. I've never really had many problems with my Wii before*... here's hoping.


*One thing I occasionally get is a stupidly long loading time and occasionally crash after launching a channel, but I've had that for years...

Hopefully they'll release a fix soon that will hopefully be homebrew-safe. Here's hoping the backlash from this botched update is so bad that they just outright undo it.

In any case, as I said in the homebrew topic, here's hoping a workaround is made soon that'll let me keep my region-free video player-ness.

Hmm, after researching it seems most problems come from a freeze at 50% half way through updating, forcing you to perform a hard reset, with problems appearing upon rebooting your system (often relating to data management screens, starting a channel, or even switching it on for the same time. Considering my update went fine (slow, but fine), I'm guessing I'm safe.



On a side note, I hate how people seem to mock Nintendo every time they fail to block the homebrew channel permanently. =\

In any case, that'll teach Nintendo to try and kill homebrew. ;P I mean yeah, I can understand why they'd want to stop people using it for piracy, but it has so many legitimate uses, too. =/

It sounds like a few workarounds have already been thought of and are being worked on right now.

It should be noted that very few Wiis have been reportedly bricked by this, infact I haven't actually read about anyone saying their own Wii has been bricked, just "I heard this could brick Wiis". Although there is really very little reason to update anyway from the sounds of things.

Removing piracy is near impossible. Sony are having problems with it too.

It's perfectly ignorable though, I haven't touched a single piracy related Homebrew app, and I have quite a few things on the ol' HBC.

Ah right, so am I right in understanding that homebrew started off innocent, and then certain groups made the illegal apps? If so that's fair enough I guess. But I still side with Nintendo ultimately. Their decision makes complete sense.

Most people use Homebrew for things like running DVDs (should have been included from the start) or playing import games (Wii is the only system of the gen that is completely region locked)

So really it's just taking back what the Wii has "locked" for stupid reasons.

Just because emulators are available on the internet doesn't mean I shouldn't use any custom internet browsers.
Just because emulators are available through Homebrew doesn't make the two synonymous in any way shape or form.

The creators of the HBC and initial hacks have always said they do not endorse or support the use of emulators on their channel.

Maybe if Nintendo would just release the games and stuff people wanted, nobody would resort to homebrew or piracy now would they?

Anyway, I updated my Wii earlier without knowing this before hand. Seems to run fine, but the update was slow.

Anyway, I'd better get myself a homebrew app for the Gamecube. I just want something for SNES emulation since Nintendo don't seem to be wanting to release Final Fantasy VI or TMNT Turtles in Time anytime soon.
