Gamesradar Sonic 4 Q&A

I didn't see this anywhere, but if it has already been posted I apologize.

Our followers on Twitter and Facebook yesterday were asked: What do you want to know about Sonic 4? Having been shown the first three levels of the game and being a long-time Sonic fan, I feel ready to answer even the geekiest of questions.

Linky.

Some bits:

It may not have as much scope for exploration as, say, Sonic 2, but the music, iconography and level layout is way better than other recent Sonic games. I'd say it'll be at least as good as Sonic Advance 1, which I liked very much.

Sadly there are no plans for a disc version.

The thumbnail for Lost Labyrinth looks like being a direct return to the Labyrinth zone of Sonic 1, while Casino Night will undoubtedly plunder Sonic 2 and 3. It's worth mentioning too that Splash Hill features the S tunnel from Sonic 1, the twist strips from Sonic 2, ziplines from Sonic 3... almost everything, in fact, is recycled from the old games.

The physics do not have the same weight as the Mega Drive game. It's more like a cross between Sonic CD and Sonic Rush. It's not as close to the original trilogy as I'd personally like, but it doesn't look awful.

There are some nods to the GBA games, like the way Sonic opens up his body as he ascends after a spring jump, but I'd say it's most like a cross between Sonic 2 and Sonic Rush. If you mean is it moving away from Sonic Unleashed, then yes it is. Even the side-on bits are different, and there's no 'trick' button when you're airborne.

The special stages, however are certainly different. Despite their Sonic 1 look, they're controlled ENTIRELY though tilt. Yup, Sixaxis and Wiimote users will be tilting the maze to let Sonic move through it like a marble. He cannot jump and you have to collect a set number of rings to unlock the next section of the maze before you reach the room with the emerald in it. It doesn't look like much fun, in truth, although the backgrounds look exactly like the view through a kaleidoscope.

There are a bunch of smart-ass questions littered throughout, of course, but there are also some very specific gameplay questions that detail some of the design choices. tl;dr, it plays like a hybrid of Sonic Rush and Sonic 2, with level design a bit closer to Sonic Advance. Note that when he says "first three levels" he means the first three Acts of Splash Hill.

Quite a bit of info, and today of another badnik reveiling. Quite nice.

Casino Street pretty much looks identical to Casino Night (which I love) so it looking the same with some new music will make me happy. The idea of this being as a prologue is starting to be a bit clearer. Get familiar objects and enemy to bring back an old audience and (hopefully) start fresh for the rest of the episodes.

Welp if this is true, then I'm pleased.

Lack of jump will feel so awkward at first. Button reflexes will go nuts, and the "collect certain amount of rings before accessing new area" gives me Sonic 2 vibes. Now the question is whether they added a time limit in the Special Stage, otherwise I'd be fine with it.

So what it's becoming what I sort of expected but better in some places. June/July can't come any faster.

Well, the physics aren't as 'weighty' as they should be. That in itself it very disappointing but if they aren't totally Rush like then it's not all bad. A video, a proper on, is really needed right now.

How would one describe the Sonic CD physics? I mean, I own it and play it a lot, but really can't see what makes it different from Sonic 1-3.

He cannot jump
Wait what? I don't like the sound of that...I have enough trouble with Sonic 1's special stages, I don't see swapping jumping for tilting doing much to help...

Jumping physics are a bit floatier, and the camera is much tighter. In a nutshell. There's more to it but that is the gist of it.

I really trust that GamesRadar Q&A- they're speaking so realistically and honestly. The IGN one however just seems to be "Well it's so perfect and everything is perfect and did I mention perfect?" in an effort to make the game seem "perfect" prior to release, only to show their real opinions when the review comes around.

I doubt that GamesRadar guy went to go see the game. It sounds like he's going off of that leaked video and all the screenshots that have been released.

I don't see why the IGN review's so harsh on Sonic 3. I don't see this game's levels spontaniously being set on fire. :P

No problem.

Except he has already written an article based on the video leak. Why would he claim he has seen the game itself in action and then do a fan Q&A nearly a month after the leak occurred?

As an aside, most of the IGN article has so much PR speak that it looks like Sega themselves wrote it.

THIS.

As much as I'd like to watch a new video for entertainment purposes, I think it's time they finally put people's fears to rest on the actual mechanics. The least they could have done was give us a countdown for the SHZ video on the site.

Seems that the previews are legitimate, sounds like a group of game sites were given the chance to play Sonic 4 and the NDA ended today, hence all the previews hitting today.

Thanks for the mention on the news story Shadz! Always nice to see somebody cite their sources ;)

No prob, credit where credit is deserved ;) and yeah it seems like a large group of the press were invited to SOA to have a look at the game.

It sounds like they still aren't letting the associated press play it. This whole revelation process is reminding me more and more of Journey of Dreams.

They probably did.

"We spent the last few moments of the demo taking a look at the first boss battle in Sonic 4: Episode I. This boss battle is similar to a previous battle with Dr. Eggman, who floats around in his ship with a massive pendulum attached. The major difference between this fight and similar ones in previous Sonic games is that after Eggman is inflicted with damage, his attack pattern completely changes. After it changes, the pendulum becomes a massive mallet and Eggman swings it around to smash Sonic with it. Sega tells us that most of the boss battles in the game will have similar variations on familiar confrontations with Eggman."

Very nice. So, what other variations can we excpect based on the levels we know of?

So it becomes a ball n' chain to a freaking wreaking ball. I can dig it.

It's an IGN preview. They're always gonna say something positive till the actual game is out. I wouldn't take everything they say too serious.

So did everyone get up this morning and decide to post a Sonic 4 preview of things we already know?

That aside, positive previews all around. Not a surprise though. It's pretty obvious that the critics will be in favor of the game.
