[MUSIC] CSS's Digital Orchestra

I think I now have enough content to show here. Check out my bad-ass...erm, I mean, elegant mercenary...elegant...gah, just read on!

So if any of you have went onto my profile page, you would have seen under the large red letters that said Music Projects all of the music that I have made. Since not many people tend to look onto other people's profiles as much as they do topics, I figured I would surely get a bit more attention with my songs if I made a topic.

Listening to new arrangements of Video Game music via Youtube, Newgrounds, and OC Remix among others, I really wanted to make my own music. The reason being is that I had an ambition to make more "perfect" versions of certain tunes in my own liking, despite it being impossible to make something as "perfect" as I want it (but hey, that's where the fun comes from).

I had gotten FL Studio 8 and wanted to try my luck at it. Problem was that I had absolutely no way how to work it at first, so I went through videos on Youtube to try and explore the interface more. When I got around to learning how to "cheat" at Music Theory with FL Studio, thanks to AcePincter, I started to know how everything worked a lot better.

Right now, I've been making these songs for almost 1 year, so it's safe to say that I am quite a noob at this stuff. I don't expect too much praise from my works, but rather that people would listen and tell me what they think at the angle I took at making these tunes. Most of them are jazz in nature, because I love the saxophone way too much. laugh.gif

So without further ado, here are the songs I have made that I submited on Newgrounds. (Please note that some are still being worked on and are just previews, while others are too large to fit on Newgrounds):

Music projects:

Current: Super Mario Galaxy Smooth Jazz - Rosalina's Embrace Febuary 2010

Full list:

  • Sonic 3 & Knuckles Jazz - Rouge's Temptation (Finished, but too large for Newgrounds) August 2009 - January 2010
  • Super Paper Mario Choir Orchestra - Dimentio's Hymn (Unfinished, scrapped) October 2009 [Warning: Listen to this at your own risk. It's not good]
  • Super Mario Galaxy Classical - Rosalina's Waltz (Finished, January 2010)
  • Super Mario Galaxy Smooth Jazz - Rosalina's Embrace (current project) Febuary 2010
  • Elegant Jazz - Somewhere Over the Rainbow (side project, unfinished) March 2010

As you can tell, Rouge's Temptation was my very first song that I made. Hell, I even started making it on keyboard before I got FL studio. And on top of that, it is the longest song I've ever made, maxing at over 6 minutes. I was quite proud at the 8 months of work that I put into it before finally getting it to where it is. I think I might make an different take on it in the future.

As for Over the Rainbow...I seriously have no idea what possesed me to make a different version of that. Maybe after listing to the K-pop Girls Generation's sing an R&B-like version of the song in english.

That all said, I'm thinking about going on OC Remix to get some more critique so I can improve my works. I'm not 100% sure whether or not I want to do so, and I only have one person so far encouraging me to go ahead.

So what'cha think, fellas?

Pretty cool. Not really my genre so I can't exactly go into how technically amazing/awful anything is, but the only criticisms I can think of is that they sound kind of mechanical and devoid of layers. Of course, it could be that they aren't supposed to have tons of layered instruments and such.

...I'm probably the worst person to give critique of any sort, though. It's all vague, and I'm not the best resource on making music.

I would suggest to keep at it, however. Gettin' a Devil Summoner: Raidou feel from the Jazz stuff.

Also, I'd be careful with OCRemix. While I've never submitted stuff there or anything, they seem kind of arbitrary and pretentious in some of their judging. Of course, I've only seen a couple of examples of this and my memory is hazy. Nothing to lose, I guess?

I've already put it in the WIP subforum at the site, so I'm getting a bit of criticism on it. Though very little.

I take what little advice they give me and try to use it, though only three people have given me any sort of critique in anyway.

In other news, here's an update on Rosalina's Embrace. Based off the comment from one of the folks at OCR, I decided to go along and make it sound more like a "ritzy dinner party" compared to the jazz feel that I wanted. Hope you enjoy, and if you don't...well that's not particularly my problem, eh? ;)

I was more thinking when they do that judging thing when it's finished. Though I presume they browse the WIP forums too.

Anyway, now it's giving me an FFVIII feel.

Sax sounds less canned, and the piano sounds a lot better that way, I think. I like it.

I think you have to submit it to the judging forums first. I know BlueMagic had finished his Ice Cap chillout tune on the WIP forums, but he didn't submit his, so I think it's the remixer's call whether or not to submit it to be judged.

Woah, FFXIII? I never though I would get that compliment on the track. It must be the new strings VSTi I'm using.

Either way, I appreciate hearing that the saxophone sounds much better than it did before. It did sound a bit awkward, but I can't find a good sound compared to the one I'm using now.

Okay man! These are FREAKING awesome!

Let's me say that my favorite are Rouge's Temptation and Rosalina's Embrace.

The first because it's good ol' smooth jazz. I mean you nailed the sounds pretty well man. It's almost like listen to an actual jazz band playing a song at a local coffee shop. I had a stress day today and this helped ease the pain greatly.

The latter seems more classical and you did very well with that. it's very relaxing! I'll tell you what I'm going to do. I'm going to go to sleep soon and I'm going to play this after I download it. This should make me sleep like a big freaking baby. :P

You have a serious knack for this man. I especially like it how you go back over the songs to tune them to exactly the way you want. That's pride and dedication right there. :)

I'm glad you like it, because I've yet to actually finish perfecting it. I got more critique from the folks at OCR forums, and they're giving me a lot of useful tips that make the song sound so much more elegant, intimate, and melodic. I'll present another preview another time, but I have to start implementing the rest of the critique that would help the song even more.

It's not just me tuning them how I want. Each song I remake has a personal drive to it, serving as the reason I made the song.

For Rouge's Temptation, I wanted to picture a battle between Sonic vs. Rouge instead of the generic Sonic vs. Knuckles, Metal Sonic, Eggman, or Shadow. And I pictured the battle arena to be on top of a newly made Egg Carrier, with them fighting over possession of the Emeralds. (of course :P)

For Rosalina's Embrace, I particularly wanted to imagine Rosalina in a more sensual, elegant, and more beautiful dress instead of the basic (but still beautiful) and coming to the center of her observatory to dance with another partner to a jazz tune. Apparently, it sounded more classical than jazz, but I still went with it.

Dimentio's Hymn was one where I wanted to take the more psychotic and deadly aspects of Dimentio and amp them up 10x. But...that didn't go so well.

I'm imagining my next peice to be one of the boss tunes from Sonic 3 & Knuckles. However, instead of Sonic vs. Eggman, it'll be a free-for-all of Sonic vs. Shadow vs. Metal Sonic. It'll sound a bit more apocalyptic in tune, as you picture Shadow tackling Sonic out of the ARK with Metal Sonic being deployed by Eggman to destroy the two hedgehogs, and the battle will be a free fall into the Earth's atmosphere with the falling debris being used as platforms while the three hedgehogs go at each other's throats.

Every piece begins with an imagination.

On and speaking of which, here's the full version of Rouge's Temptation. Although I have to inform you: if you really want to listen to this tune everywhere you go on your MP3 player, you'll have to free up atleast 20 MB in order to do so. The song is actually 8 min in length.

And for an update:

stats.png

Changes:

-Added strings to accompany the piano in the intro

-Made the strings fuller in tone

-Added small flute parts in certain parts

-Added Dream Bell to certain portions near the beginning

-Made the sax the harmony along with the piano while flute does the melody at 1:39

-Changed a few notes

It sounds even better than it did before. It's still being worked on, but I wanted to make sure it sounds more like a dinner party and stand out while being true to the original piece, and so far it sounds just like that. It sounds richer overall, although there are still some things that need to be polished before it's actually complete, and who knows how long that'll take since I'm such a perfectionist over it.

At first when I added the flute, it didn't sound like it would fit with the piece at all. But I figured it was because I was putting it in the wrong places in the music. So I listened more to the original piece and heard the flute parts in the middle of the song, so I figured to add it somewhere along that line.

So what do you guys think so far?

Here's a new update. This time, I decided to go back to a Sonic tune and make a string orchestra of Eggman's Boss music from Sonic 3 and Knuckles.

I call it Robotnik's Hymn. It's really nothing major, as I just wanted to see if I could do well with a string rendition. I'm thinking about making it a full on orchestra, but I need a lot of time in order to do that. :)

New update. I decided to continue with Robotnik's Hymn and make it an orchestra, and I wanted to make it EPIC for someone like Eggman.

So here you are, enjoy:

Sonic 3 & Knuckles Orchestra - Robotnik's War (Current Project, preview) July 2010

Okay...it was short. It's just a preview for more epicness to come. B)

Okay, a huge bump of an update.

So...after a few failed attempts at making Rosalina's Comet Observatory in a different genre, I decided to start from scratch and stay a bit true to the original.

Here's a piece of that good ol' Mario Galaxy tune. Still a WIP tho. tongue.gif

stats.png

Juggling this along with the Zelda Battle Theme tune I have on Newgrounds. I'm fairly proud of this one at the moment, while the Zelda piece is really challenging me.

*Dusts off topic*

2011?! Holy hell did I take a break...

So we all know this guy right?

200px-DimentioSuperPaperMario.png

It's Dimentio! The Charming Magician!

Well, I got a major update in music. Here's me taking another shot at making an arrangement of the Super Dimentio's theme.

I started this back in 2010 and didn't know how to finish it and took a 3 year break (apparently). But I came back and managed to finish it, and this one has a story to it as the music serves as a background.

stats.png

The theme for this was Evil Circus, and the imagery was meant to match the music’s tone as dark, sinister, scary…the typical emotions that invoke fear and worry. It was to blend Dimentio’s psychotic and disturbing nature and mesh it with his jester-like appearance, and the tune continues to build and build until it reaches the peak and then drops. You can sort of feel tension build as the timpani picks up speed at the middle while only the bass plays, then more and more instruments join their voices and adds more tension when their sounds play together. This was to invoke thoughts of the character performing something torturous under the guise of a circus performance.

In short, imagine yourself at a very dark and disturbing circus, and that'll pretty much be the perfect image while you're listening to the tune and reading the mini-story I set at specific intervals for it with Dimentio and the Mario Bros in a torturous performing act.

0:00

*Drumroll*

Ringleader: And now, for the final act! We have....DIMENTIO - The Amazing Magician!

0:04

[Dimentio appears and bows towards the cheering demented audience]

Dimentio: I have a special treat for everyone. Now introducing my assistants: The MARIO BROS!

[Mario brothers, tied up, are brought to the center]

Dimentio: Don’t blink!

0:13

Dimentio cuts the Bros ropes and changes the circus into his own dimension, creating massive illusions of shapes as he flings them towards the crowds before bringing them onto the Mario Bros.

0:26

Dimentio levitates and plays with the Bros like puppets. The audience laughs.

0:39

Mario Bros forced to do very dangerous acts through different dimensions while the audience cheers at them going through them.

0:51

Dimentio: And now, more my next act,

Dimentio joins them and puts him and the Bros through dangerous events; he simply flies through his own obstacles while the Mario Bros struggle with them.

1:17

Dimentio makes the Mario Bros dance by shooting bolts at them.

1:43

Dimentio warps the Mario Bros on a massive diving board to prepare the last peformance.

1:56

Tension starts building as Dimentio readies a performance in the form of a black hole and tries to make the Mario Bros jump. They refuse.

2:08

Dimentio: Oh, come on!

Dimentio becomes more drastic and irritated, adding more danger to the performance: he sets the black hole on FIRE, and places rings of electricity around the board as punishment, then he sends warped clones to push the Bros off the board. Mario Bros decide to fight them off to avoid jumping off.

2:34

Fighting wears the Mario Bros out, yet they keep going until…

2:46

The Mario Bros are forced to jump.

3:00

Imagine the Mario Bros going through this repeatedly until...

3:25

And the Mario Bro come out of the hole, alive, while Dimentio smiles bows towards a demented crowd.

Dimentio: Thank you! Thank you, everyone!

You should be making more music, bro!

Well, I did make an update on a past arrangement, called Robotnik's War, if you wanna hear that:

Thinking about going back to the OC Remix forums and get some critique, as I seem to be missing something in the songs.

I was just screwing around with this song. Just wanted to see what variations I could make of an original tune. Not really my best, but here you go...for the few of you that actually bother to listen. sad.png

Got an Endless Mine, test piece in the works tho...

That's... a really good track there, CSS!

I like it a lot; it takes his nostalgic Sonic 2 theme, but slows it down. If there was a cartoon, it would actually fit as his theme very, very well. It's slow enough it could easily work as background music in a scene he appeared in. Liking the foreboding notes of it definitely.

Whenever I finally get around to introducing Robotnik in my webcomic, you can bet I'll be listening to this track for inspiration.

Wonderful work; I'll have to check out the rest of your music later. :)

As of now, I hearby declare this masterpiece completed...until further notice.

Thank you.

I'm gonna request the Robotnik'sWar and Robotnik's March both also make it onto the next album, or at least try out for it! Wonderful, slowed down remixes of the classic boss themes. They'd work very well for cutscenes in a more mature Sonic cartoon, or heck, I'm sure they could work in a video game cutscene too even.

And while I'm on an update spree here, here's an update to the Endless Mine song I'm working on. Needs some extra work around the end tho, as it sounds a bit too gloomy than I wanted...

Okay, since the post got wiped, I'm reposting this tune:

Valor at the Ice Cap (which has since been updated) - imagine the forces of the Eggman Empire staring down the approaching armies of GUN, the Battle Bird Armada, and the Nocturnus Tribe on the Ice Cap of Knuckles' ancestral floating island, and getting ready to throw down.

...man, I miss my old description. :(

Also, a new Ice Cap March to go along with the above.

Really, the experiment here was to try and breathe new life in a overwhelmingly popular game tune that has been remixed to death. Seems there's still a lot you can do if you branch out the themes and feeling of the song while keeping its icy style intact.
