So we all have heard of the "secret" characters with nonsense ways to play them like Sonic and Tails if you beat so many people in that insanely difficult wire frame battle mode. Which made people think this Master Hand being playable as a regular character by pressing and holding B out of the name selection screen while at the same time pressing A and then A again to go to the stage select screen was of course, fake.

The thing is, it isn't. I just tried it myself, and yes, it truly does work and has a winning animation and the announcer saying "The Winner is Master Hand!" and everything. How did it take such a huge following this many years to realize that the Master Hand was regularly playable by an in game secret? When I first found this out my mind was honestly blown. How has something as big as this in a game with such a huge following and people playing for literally hundreds of hours for years go unnoticed?

EDIT: Playing around with it more while some matches go fine other ones are freezing and after winning once the other times I win the game freezes, so I guess it doesn't always work since it seems you should most of the time quit matches (by pausing when the final kill comes and then pressing down all the buttons) to avoid glitching since it often will freeze when it happens.

ALSO CAUTION. I was using my memory card at first but people advise to either back-up your memory or play without a memory card since it sometimes can cause the game data to erase. Not often, but apparently it has happened and a risk.

Sort of old news. I remember seeing people hacking him in the game before.

Master Hand almost takes up half of the Fountain of Dreams. D:

I've used Action Replay too, and in that sense it's not new, but this is a legit in-game way to get it to work which is new.

Good for you....good for you.....

If you're implying this is fake and I made this up try it for yourself, this isn't by me either.

So wait, it's entirely possible to play as Master Hand without any hax whatsoever? And this just got discovered now, 8 or so years after the game's release?!

You'd think those crazy smash hackers would have noticed this beforehand, eh? A great find, regardless. 'Tis a shame the majority of us have moved on to the game's sequel since then.

Oh well. I'll go try to do this trick later. After I kick some arse as Kid Goku in some Tatsunoko vs. Capcom stages that have been ported to Super Smash Bros. Brawl! Ohohoho!

At first, I thought it was shenanigans, but I guess sometimes things just go unnoticed for a VERY long time, and that when actually discovered, people are in just disbelief because the code is simplistic or have too much faith in other gamers thinking they'd found all the secrets years before. Time to break out the 'ol Melee!

Wow, this is real? Zomg.

Kudos to whoever managed to find this glitch, but it does surprise me that it's taken so long to be discovered. Perhaps this will bring about a surge of love for playable Master Hand.

PLAYABLE MASTER HAND FOR SUPER SMASH BROS BITCH-SLAP!!! :P

(that's totally what the fourth one will be called)

I've just tried this using a Wii and it works - You don't need a Gamecube console to pull this off. This is no hoax. It took me about 15 minutes to get it right, but it really does work. Master Hand IS playable. It didn't display his character during the fight first time (perhaps Corneria just didn't want to work for me?) but I got the flying intro and the icons for Master Hand as my stock lives. I'd also try doing this without Zelda as a CPU character as I noticed when I exited the fight that Master Hand is represented by Sheik on the results screen, just with no picture. That might also be causing it to be a bit buggy. The second time I tried it I played Pokémon Stadium, and here he is...

There is a way to do it with a second controller which is apparently much easier, but I can't test that out. Smash Wiki has more details on how to do it and the explanation as to how it is possible to trick the game into giving you Master Hand. It makes sense when you think about it. Each character has a given ID number. If no character is picked for the human player and you force the game to go to the match select screen, it's going to fill in the gap with the character that has ID number 0... And that character is Master Hand.

Yeah... Mind blown. Excellent find. Just goes to show that even games that have been played to death can still yield interesting little glitches and tricks.

EDIT: Fixed link.

Damn that's awesome... But yeah, as SOON as I heard it I tried. It took a while to get it down, but it worked.

The main annoyance is I can't figure how to actually MOVE the Master Hand. I can use all his abilities, but he's completely stationary.

Second controller works much easier for me, it seems. I couldn't get the single controller method to work, but I checked Gamefaqs and they've got the cheat listed. What they say there is select a character with Controller 1 and put the cursor over "Back," then go into Name Entry with Controller 2 and hover over the same spot as with the single-controller method. Then simply press A at the EXACT SAME TIME.

Anyway, I've actually had the game freeze about four times. Stamina works best, of course. When in Normal Melee, I was able to get Final Destination to work, but I forgot to change it off of Time match. I beat up my opponent for a while, and when the battle ended, it froze. Ironically, I actually had Master Hand hit a Metal Box and he turned metal.

Later I got it to work in Stamina on Pokefloats, and that time Master Hand actually was able to win, but of course that's because it skips the "post-battle" screen. Later I tried Camera on Hyrule Temple to get a picture. I couldn't move the camera at all, but I could still take a snapshot. However, a Mushroom fell on me (not sure which one) and the game froze.

I then tried a couple more Stamina matches, was able to get in, but neither of them would load this time around. I considered the game frozen each time and reset. First it was Green Greens, then it was Final Destination.

If I can get the other method to work I could probably get Master Hand in other areas, I just couldn't get that one to work properly.

FFFFFFFUUUUUUU when I saw "Master Hand is Playable in..." I thought a new Smash Bros was announced.

But wow, it only took nine years to figure out! Definitely need to try this. Sounds awesome :0

Using the second method, where you use two controllers, I was able to get it to the selection screen, but when I clicked Corneria, it froze while loading, >=. Super exciting though, XD. When I finally got it this far, I was like "FUCK!" XD.

Playing as him now in Pokemon Stadium, <3.

^ I hear that it likes to freeze if you select the stage with the controller other than Player 3. It still does it with Player 3 sometimes, but its less likely to. Also, if you do it with a CPU, the Master Hand will move even if its not Player 3. How to do it with a CPU, though, I do not know... it just only works in Melee and can't be done in Training.

Yeah, the first time I did it, I chose with the P2 controller, but doing it a second time and using P3 loaded the level up as quick as it normally does. It was weird trying to play as him at first, but after looking at the Smashwiki article, I was able to actually do some moves, =3. To bad no friends can come over right now, or I'd surprise them and blow their minds, XD.

It's not that no one knew about this, (because they did) its that people didn't want to believe this or no one really attempted it. I remember playing as Master Hand plenty of times. I would use him secretly when playing tourney's with friends. Really old news dude.

Edit: Also, it does sometimes erase your file.

Alright, I figured out the single-controller method now. ^^ Awesome.

I still find it funny that this is ACTUALLY possible to do.

Dependently. I looked into it since of course this cheat originated in 2008 when a guy discovered it when he just started playing Melee, then last November it was made more official on the Smash Boards but it wasn't mainstream until June 30th in large part since there's no Smash Bros stuff going on right now and only one section of the internet really knew about it since last November, some knew earlier if they tried it from the one guy who revealed it in 2008 but I think more just passed it as bullshit and no one really announced it as being real at the time.

It's kind of like that Hotel Mario cutscene in the game that was only found last year. The game had been out for years but it wasn't until last year it was found main stream, I'm sure some people knew about it but they didn't attempt to make it known main stream thus it was big news for those interested last year. This would be the same kind of deal where this was technically discovered in 2008 and a corner of the Smash Bros fandom confirmed it last November but it wasn't made more mainstream until a couple of days ago which is why it's now appearing on cheat sites and on news sites.

Alright, I figured out the single-controller method now. ^^ Awesome.

It's one of those deals you're unsure if it's a glitch or was somehow intentional, like this is more surely a glitch since the "Set to Zero being Master Hand" thing makes sense, but it kinda' reminds me that way you can get Mew without hacking in Pokemon Red and Blue, it's so bizarre but it doesn't seem like a glitch in many ways yet it likely was one.

Okay, now I know of a 2 controller method, so I'm gonna mess around with that, and see how it goes.
