Archie Sonic Main Discussion

I agree with VEDJ-F. I always found something off about the lighting in issues colored like that. Kinda made the characters look like they were made of plastic or something.

Really? Meh, opinions I guess.

Personally, I just don't like the colours between the period I listed. Especially when Arc 1 & Arc 3 had much better colours in Worlds Collide. Thankfully, the colour balancing has been a lot better after Chaos Caper.

PS Part one of Worlds Unite ranked in at 8,657 copies sold on the direct market.

Weird, because the previous issue of SU (aka #75) sold 11,618 copies.

SBR, you know I love Bates, and even I went a little "wait what" at the new issue. It looks great, but there's certainly some choices he made I don't think quite work (he normally makes his art much more dynamic, but his art here somehow feels a lot more static? Not in a good way. Only in specific panels, though, which is even more confusing).

The problem isn't even with Bates himself, but with the crossover as a whole. You go from the Ghostbusters-guys-grey-and-metal-power-hour where everything's well constructed, sure, but the Sonic characters look boring (something that may be solved as they get more confortable with them, mind) and the colouring's utter drab, to Bates looking immensely colourful and almost childish, to a story where Wily and Eggman look like bad grafitti imitations from 2005, to god knows what next. It's jarring, to say the least- we were getting used to a touch of consistency. The comparisons to the first crossover are justified, I think- Yardley! in the midst of two incredibly on-model artists was one of the stupidest decisions Kaminski made- as are the comparisons to the day you'd have the art go from Butler to Many Hands to Ron Lim to Axer in 2 issues.

I don't get what's hard to get about this. I love Giorgio Cavazzano and I'd love to see him draw Sonic to sate my curiosity, but I doubt I'd like a Sonic ongoing from him (unless it were, like, StC I suppose which I see more as a Disney comic). Or a Frank Miller Sonic. I love his art, I genuinely do, even nowadays, but can you imagine how wrong it'd be?

Fair enough it just comes off more as Sonic Fans looking for something to complain about to me more often than not. I know there's legit reasons people have for not liking stuff like Shoening's art on Sonic Characters (From what I've seen of Mega Man #50 they look good to me but what do I know) but it just seems more and more to me like this fandom just refuses to like anything.

I hate that I feel like this because believe me I'd like to talk about the issue/Cartoon/Game/Whatever but all I see is "Baww This Sucks Sonic is Dead" Over and Over and frankly it get's pretty fucking tiring after the millionth time.

To be fair, #75 had 9 (or 8.5, depending on your view) covers.

Also, it had Metal Sonic, which makes it immensely more valuable.

But a difference in sales that huge is odd, especially for a crossover.

So my LCS got Mega Man Battles. My opinion? Bates did a nice job on his portion, even if there were a few oddities like Rock's mouth as he was spinning or that odd panel of the 3 when that 'cold' moment discussed earlier happened. And that criticized story that began with Wily & Eggman and was the Sonic Man vs Robot Masters story? Yeah, the art is odd and perhaps a bit off model, but as a guy who's seen what depths of crap artwork Archie has given us in the past, I can say that I would have loved this guy on the art instead of Penders, Lim and a few others.

Oh, and Neal Adams was at my LCS today. That was a thing that happened.

First part of Worlds Collide was Mega Man #24, which got 11,173 on the direct market. Universe (part 2) was slightly off the pace at 9,912, while Sonic (part 3) picked it up to 12,158.

That's why I've been so annoyed with the negativity towards the art so far frankly. We've had legitimately garbage artwork in the past but when the worst people can say about the art here is "The Colorings a little Dim and the Sonic Characters look wonky" and in the case of McCarthy "The Characters look a little off" and still act like it's some sin against the book it just bugs me.

All the issues seen are minor but the way it comes off is like "OMG RON LIM 2.0".

Quite frankly, I think you're overreacting here. We've had criticisms for the art. We didn't call it outright awful or on Penders/Lim/Many Hands levels. It's still decent artwork. That said, because you like it doesn't exclude it from criticism and every time anyone has a complaint about it, you start shouting out it's a overreaction and we are comparing him to the likes of Lim.

How much was the book? Was it a hardcover or did it use standard paper? And were there any juicy tidbits?

You have a big problem of seeing anything that goes against your grain as much bigger than it is, we've discussed this before. No-one's saying Ron Lim 2.0. People are saying "why's this so drab". Please stop exaggerating.

It wasn't a hardcover, it was like an... oversized issue. I'd say the paper is at least on par with Sonic's & Mega Man's, as opposed to the paper used in the Digests & Archives. I wasn't able to pick it up due to the crowd for Adams, but I believe it's around the same price as an average issue; maybe a dollar more.

As for tidbits, I wouldn't say there's that much; it's expansions on the Battles seen thus far in the crossover. If you want to see some nice battles and are a completionist, I'd say that you could pick it up. Otherwise, it's not required reading, save for seeing Silver tell the Maverick Hunters about the Genesis Portals before they meet Sticks.

Also noticed Schoening's first issue for the IDW-busters/Real Ghostbusters on sale today; the man must have been busy drawing two crossovers for different companies at roughly the same time.

oh good we're uh

back in 2006 it seems

You have to admit that sounds like biting statement with the comaparison to the late Penders-era pencils.

Yeah, I imagine that's why he only did breakdowns for issues after the first one and Yardley was left to finish his breakdowns for later issues for this act. Schoening does his own inks, so it'd probably be too time-consuming to for him to work on two big crossovers like that at the same time.

Yeah I can see it coming across as that. Was thinking more of dA, though. You had a lot of fanart like that around that time, I seem to recall.

Oh, here's the short circuit in proper size.

For the record, 50 issues is four years and two months, assuming the run is uninterrupted.

That Short Circuits just makes me wonder just how sudden and unplanned this Mega Man hiatus really was...

The digital issue of Mega Man #50 came with two copies of the Short Circuit pages, except that the second one was missing a text balloon in the last panel (sorry, I posted the wrong one on Bumbleking, which was reposted here a few posts above) So here is the correct one:

Is it cool to like the Deadly Six now?

Because even as a Mega Man guy I love them in that scene. That's just flippin' cold.

This is the comics. So I'm gonna say yes.

I mean, they made Big the Cat likable here, so I think it's fair to say that most people here who like the comics had confidence that no matter how lacking they were in the games, the D6 would be handled much better than in the games.

It's just that no one expected them to exceed those expectations, because goddamn!

Yeah I'm not gonna take back what I said, the art has been wonky in this crossover but I feel this is more the Battle Book's fault then the actual main crossover. the main crossover has been pretty consistant with its set of artists but the Battle Book feels like a slew of guest stars that never worked on the Sonic or Megaman comics before and just doing their own thing, kind of reminds me of the old days.

But then again the solict did advertise it as such, all-star cast of creators and whatnot. so I guess I shouldn't be complaining.
