Phantasy Star Online 2! Open Beta now!

And nothing of value was lost...

Time to bring back all the interesting things that kept happening during this last months.

* First of all, disregard the post above, weapon crafting actually became viable! High level crafts reduce the damage variance as well as increasing the max damage a bit and you can mitigate any variance problems you might have by equipping the 11* Saiki unit set and/or investing on critical hit skills, Fighter mains can get a nice bonus from it and Bouncers tend to have a lot of points to waste so that's also an option.

* Second, Magatsu came and wrecked everything... That's it... Until the players figured out a way to defeat it in 30 seconds. (music totally fitting yo) As you can see this is a pretty ridiculous thing so SEGA is going to lock the ammount of Magatsu runs to a max of 4... Unsurprisingly  all the good players who can pull this strategies were mad.

* The aforementioned RA/BR tactic actually started as a GU/BR tactic, using chain trigger instead of the ever popular Weak Bullet, sadly, this triggered a series of patches when chain kept being nerfed (episode 3 has not been kind to gunners, with the nerf of the roll attack bonuses, the nerfs to Il Barta, Chain Trigger and now that Magatsu will gain ranged resistance)

* Killspawn used to be a popular tactic on Time Attack mode when you could destroy mobs before they even appeared! This was removed on a recent patch (which also made a lot of players angry, but don't worry, unless you had 0 ping playing this game you wouldn't be able to pull this off so it's not a big loss to most of us)

* Black Nyack was added to the casino (It's like black Jack but with deformed cats), which broke the game for a little while before an emergency maint, hilariously if you entered the game while equipping a certain unit you'd make the game crash for all the players on the table :v

* Ultimate Quests were released and to the surprise of many, they were actually challenging... Sadlty, most of this was ignored because the new and greatest shiny set of weapons only dropped from 1 single enemy, which turned the entire quest into a tedious start/look for monster/restart routinne. SEGA promises that Ultimate Lillipa will fare better in this regard.

* Dark Falz Winner! The (kinda) self proclaimed biggest loser on the universe has actually seen to have a very good streak latelly, not only its XH fight is one of the most entertaining in the game but he also won the favorite enemy poll on the official site and get an... Interesting costume inspired by it on the latest scratch.

* Challenge mode has arrived! And it's actually pretty cool, not the kind of strategy oriented thing that the PSO1 version was but still requires some thought and planning if you want to clear all the 10 missions on it. (I haven't been able to do it so far, still trying to learn all the ins and outs of it)

Also, have some screenshots, because I dunno...

One of my Aibous, really love how the character ended up (started as a very unstable girl with tendencies to stab people)

That reindeer... pfff.

Oh man I really need to get back into this game. Hearing about all the fun happening in challenge mode is really pushing me to but... oh god. I'll have to go through update hell for my super outdated everything! Thank god for the tweaker but I'm sure I'll be twiddling my thumbs for awhile. :n

To give you an idea the core competitive team of our community (Ignition) still hasn't been able to finish the thing... Hilariously, their leader posted a rank that shows 1 single player managed to clear it solo (and is the only guy above their group in the rankings). Most people would be doubting of the lone winner's legitimacy but it turns out one of the biggest PSOw contributors claims to know the guy and doesn't remember him doing anything illegal before.

Anyway, I'm loving c-mode so far, it's so like the original PSO1 quests that have that (somewhat) strategic enemy and trap placement... Also, the music...

I want that intermission BGM in my room so badly ; _; (also, I feel mission 1 and 2 would go well on a Sonic game)

I'm waiting for a friend of mine to upload 30 minutes loops of all the tracks so I can play them while I do the weekly taco runs ( o 3o)

Oh my god! That fifth mission sounds kind of like VR temple from PSO! If those quests manage to sneak some trick track in there, I'm just gonna lose it pahaha. Totally on the bandwagon that'll spam your friend's loops if they ever get around to making them!

My copy of the pso2 on stage drama dvd came in recently! Haven't seen too much discussion about it on english forums though which is a shame. It's pretty funny, albeit somewhat weird when you fuse real life actors with an LCD display of enemies. The running gag with Tanaka and his miserable seatless bike was gold. That ending with Milla was full of feels too. I'm a sap, pahaha.

I took some vids of my favorite scenes. Mostly the op and end. I threw Dreamcasting in there too, but I'm more or less meh about the song. Love the hand waves and glowsticks tho! Arigatouuuuu!

The opening song, Phantasista

The Challenge Quest music is so gooooood but yeah I'm pretty bad at them.  Furthest I've made was Mission 8 if I recall.

Since gato shared some pics, it occurs to me I've never mentioned it here: If any PSO2 fans are interested I sort of recently started up a blog for my PSO2 antics, mostly funny moments but also plenty of pretty screenies too.

Welp, Seung took forever but here are the C-mode songs! (he didn't want to make them public until he had all of them)

It's a good thing he did it tho because it's time to put some hype music on the background.... It might or not be on purpose but  SEGA made uet again a PSO2 livestream right around E3! And we have some pretty cool content coming on the next months!

Coming in Early July:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogfppCaaAxM

* We might not have Soccer Lobbies, but we can still have Soccer IN the lobbies!

* Face Dark Falz Elder and Loser one after another on this new EQ and get a chance to get some new 13* weapons like the infamous Double Cannon!

Suzuhito-Yasuda-PSO2-508x402.jpg

* Get some lewd new costumes designed by Suzuhito Yasuda as well as NPCs based on them and their partner cards (as well as their weapon camos).

* The Third Virtual On collab is coming get new and old Virtual On themed items on the new scratch!

* Revive memories from alternate lifetimes with your very own Pioneer 2 team room, sadly it seems a bit empty at the moment so we can't untekk items there nor have meaningful talks with president Tyrell

Gal-Gryphon.jpg

* New LQ, Maximum Attack! Fight against an horde of enemies culminating with a fight against a lvl 75 Anga Fundarge which is shortly followed with another trip to a distant universe where you get to fight the dreaded Gal Gryphon!

* A recolor set of popular 11 and 12 star weapons are going to show up on this update, not much else is know about them but if it's like the last 13* set, then it's going to be a let down. :u

* As a side note (yet a very important one) one of July updates will allow to trade 12* weapons and 11* units! (more info on this coming later)

Coming on Late July:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XbVs6WIzdh8

* Super fun slide time Lobby!

* New summer related content (scratch, enemies, etc)

* New school uniform costumes along all the summer themed stuff.

* MORE BOUNCE PADS! *experiences Sanic Boom PTSD*

* Coming back from PSU a feature that allows to leave a little comment for everyone to see on the friendlist, now you can tell people when you are AFK or keep asking for Senpai to notice you! To this you can max your stalker powers by being able to see which quest your friends are playing as well as how many people are on it.

* Very controversial update that will make you land on the middle of the shopping lobby instead of next to a random gate when you teleport there from another block or my room. (I might be exaggerating things a tad tho)

* Separate TA rankings for people on PSO2 PC and Vita.

* Recycle shop will now allow you to unbind non 12* (nor 13*) weapons, it remains to be seen if this affects crafted equipement.

* lvl 200 mags with new auto actions! (and little else)

* New (and long awaited) feature! Custom PAs, not only alter the PAs statts this time (like with techs) but now they can also greatly alter the functionality of the PA in question, have a charged Divine Launcher that can destroy everything in range, or getting multiple hits from Slide Upper or a Twister fall that completely forgets about the fall part and lets you spin indefinitely (might consume PP a la sphere eraser) a faster Cerberus Dance, a dash animation before executing Speed Rain and more!

* SEGA also promised they will tweak tech crafting later on (mobile Il Foie for less damage anyone?)

* New Beach Wars EQ, like all the others before but this time Gal Gryphon might appear, also, you get some PSE boost if your character is wearing a swimsuit (the reactions to this were hilarious)

* Katori and Huey weapons! (remember they won the character poll a few months ago)

* New story quests!

Keep following Afin's attempts to get back his sister and begin the journey to Kuronia with Sukunahime and Kotoshiro

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yv1XBdIqO5c

* ARKS Dance festival, featuring a new song from those guys who sing the Valentine's and White Day EQ songs XD (my niece is a Quna fan so she's going to be let down by this >_>).

* Collab with the Sweets Paradise cafe chain, Pastry arpons for the girls as well as a MALE variant, also portable Naura cake shops for your room and some extra posters.

Coming in August:

* Guilty Gear and Blazblue collabs!!!!!!!!! (costumes, camos, voices, hype!)

* Balzblue early August and GG on the late half of the month

* More details coming soon!

Coming at some point this Autumn:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMYQxnrM-Pc

* Kuronia update.

* New Collab Scra…
* Emergency Q…

As usual, Bumped has the full article for your viewing.

I always forget that the Default RAcaseal in PSO2 is supposed to be Elenor Camuel, a.k.a the pink RAcaseal from the first game who was the most popular NPC (seriously she got a lot of merchandise). Her change from PSO to PSO2 seems more drastic than the other NPC's.

Just in case you're unaware, PSO2 is now playable in the US and Australia (though it uses the southeast Asia servers that are 2 years out of date, in which case it probably isn't worth your time).

My friends and I have been waiting for PSO2 to come to the US, so we haven't gotten into this game at all. Do you think it would be best for us to start now with this localized version, even if it's out of date with the SE Asian servers so far?

TBH I feel you are better playing the Japanese version, if anything because the SEA version made some changes here and there that bother me like having costumes with stats. Not to mention the Japanese version is the most up to date one and hence it's a completely different beast when it comes to class balance and skills compared to SEA. (if memory doesn't fail me SEA is still on episode 2 and that was kinda of a bad time for Hunters and Techers and maybe Fighters)

I heard SEA is more casual play friendly tho (affixes that in the regular game give like 30 atk do a lot more on SEA), so you could go with it if you want. But I've been playing on the JP version since the open beta and had little to no problems myself. And is also quite casual friendly tho in a different way, since instead of giving you easier ways to kill your enemies it just throws you with enough exp to go from 1 to 40 in on a day or so. (and then other options for those last levels but that requires some level of skill and luck on Advance Quests... Which BTW are getting buffed in the future).

EDIT: Everyone keeps saying my latest character looks like a girl...

Hmm, in that case, I might just go ahead and look up how to get started on the Japanese servers and see if I can walk my friends through it too. Hopefully the game ends up being worth the effort, I know they liked playing a demo of the game on the Xbox 360 or something, but this would be my first time trying out anything PSO related, so here's hoping. Thanks for the tip.

I don't think SEA even got to Episode 2 tbh. And I'm pretty sure the updates stagnated awhile ago.

Wouldn't mind giving PSO2 another go, but I don't think Gameguard works with windows 10 atm so I'll have to wait. :|

Despite all the flak it gets Block 1 is actually a nice place to get you started if you are going to Ship02, lots of helpful people between the Twitch-chat esque atmosphere of the place. Otherwise you can always look yourself for a team, plenty of newcomer friendly teams on the ship as well.

As for guides, Bumped used to have a whole guide that could be used to get you started on the Japanese version but it's probably quite outdated by now so I can't vouch for it. (haven't checked)

That's probably my biggest Concern about the game so far, SEGA themselves said they haven't gotten Win 10 fully supported yet and the full release of the system is coming on the next days.

Apparently making it run in compatibility mode works just fine tho.

  • 4 weeks later...

so uh i don't wanna alarm you guys or anything but

ps4 version happening

PS4 ports are generally a sign of a game getting localized (eg. Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth), what with consoles being kinda dead in Japan, but knowing Sega...

Also, this post somehow got into the Splatoon thread the first time I tried. I know I was posting it in this thread, though. Weird.

There were quite a bit of announcements with the PS4 version that you can, as usual, read more about over here.

For those who don't want to read about it tho here's a handy briefing of what happened on that livestream:

Cosplay-Contest-Winner.jpg

^ For starters this guy completely destroyed the cosplay competition that happened on the event, you can watch part of it here.

* PSO2 Episode 4 announced to come around the same time as the PS4 version, the subtitle of this episode is REBORN, which... actually makes a lot of sense compared to the last 2 we had (CODENAME and MISSION)

* A bunch of collabs and scratches that frankly do little to interest me.

* PSO2 anime teaser (BTW did you guys knew PSO2 is getting an anime? . 3. ), as it turns out, it's not the first thing one would think about when the words "PSO2 anime" comes to mind... It remains to be seen if this is something like all those SAOs and Hacks out there or if it's something more slice of life-y dealing with people playing the game... I'm guessing is the former because no one not called Sakai would main a Gunslash :v

* Episode 3 ending trailer, and it's BIG if you are into the story I highly suggest avoiding it and pray for AIDA's team to finish their work (unfortunatelly, it's been stated multiple times that the current team is having a lot of troubles to get things done due to RL issues so...)

And there wasn't much else worth mentioning, which is a bit sad... But I guess the PS4 announcement IS a big one, we'll have to wait and see if this actually works for all the people who are still waiting for the US version.
