ARTWORK (Mark) - LATEST: I'm not done with you yet~

Well, I've not drawn anything in bloody ages, and since this is a pretty big project, I thought I may as well upload it as a work in progress rather than waiting until I've finished the whole thing.

Basically, the last boss in Colours (Wii) is one of my favourite moments in Sonic history. Not that the boss itself is anything particularly spectacular (in fact, it's very, very modest compared to most of the epic monster-of-the-week last bosses we've had in the last decade), but moreso how it ends. That final bit where all the Wisps are with you, and how (provided you time it right), the instrumental chorus kicks in just as you beat the boss. Had me open-mouthed and grinning at how brilliantly it was presented. So of course, I want to draw it!

...bloody hell, I set myself a task and a half, though. For a start, let me clarify; I hate drawing big robots. Despise it. Quite frankly, you couldn't pay me enough to be an animator working on a mecha anime, I feel sorry for those people. D: Also, not that you can see it from what I've got here so far, but there are some pretty tricky perspective issues involved, too.

I've finished a bunch of the 'big' things (namely the stuff that's hardest to draw), so that's a start. Putting it all together will be a task in itself though, since I've not really used Photoshop properly for over two years, and even then that was basically the only time I've used it for a picture. My skills with all the fancy stuff like layers and transparencies are very limited and rusty. But eh, I'll manage. I really hope this turns out how I envisioned it.

EDIT: Oh, and to stop any possible confusion when I upload the finished thing to dA, my username there is Rapid-the-Hedgehog (since dA doesn't let you change your username). I've been accused of art thefting myself a few times in the years since I changed my username to Mahzes. laugh.gif Although granted that was usually by total strangers who didn't know me, but eh.

Anyway, for the time being.... (Spoiler tagged due to quite a lot of images)

That is seriously good man. Seriously good. I'm especially loving Eggman there, looks awesome!

Can't wait to see the whole image together!

Thanks! :)

For the record, I've done all the colouring thus far in Paint Shop Pro 4 (veeeery old D: ). When I mentioned Photoshop in my first post, that's because that's obviously what I'll use to put it all together into the finished piece, since Paint Shop Pro can't handle half the effects I'll actually need. Photoshop is so complex and scary though. ;__;

Also, for a bit of fun, here's my initial rough sketch to plan out the whole piece. Ignore the random Japanese, I just put it in for a bit of fun. Eggman's just laughing, and Sonic's is "I'll protect the Wisps!" That, and I probably got the grammar wrong in Sonic's line anyway. .__.

Yes, yes it is.

Damn. Someone noticed. >.>

Eh, I'll add it. It's just hard to find any decent pictures to use for reference. I know what I've done already isn't 100% accurate, if only because I could barely find anything to work from. I drew what's already there from the concept art shown in the DS version and a rip of the actual model from the Wii version, except that was from a fixed angle. Neither gave me a very good view of the tail.

Did somebody order a clobbering tail?

Hmm... looks different to what I actually thought it was. I thought it was just a third head as on the DS it attacks with a tail with a head on it. However after watching both boss fight vids, the DS one is different as it lacks the two main arms so that doesn't count. After seeing the real tail in the wii battle, I'd say you did a rather good job with the tail and the thing on a whole.

Thanks! :)

I did notice that the DS concept art version was a bit different from the Wii model I saw. I assumed the concept art was more detailed, but eh. I dunno. What I drew was basically somewhere between the two.

Right, made a start on the background. Again, this is another thing that turned out pretty hellish to draw, especially given that in-game you see it from a 3D view, and I'm trying to draw it from the side. I know I've not been 100% accurate, but like the Nega Wisp Armour itself, this is one of those things where 100% accuracy is ridiculously complex.

Perspective was also a pretty big pain with this.

Aaaand coloured. Looks a bit unsatisfyingly plain (floor is flat after all, there's only so much shading you can do on floor). Should look better once everything's pieced together, mind.

Aaand, we are finished, people! I'm fairly happy with how this turned out. Not perfect, but the small things I'd change aren't worth the effort it would take. D:

Also, thanks to Glenn for suggesting I place my signature in the bottom-right. :) I originally had it a bit below the Nega-Wisp Armour, where it was a bit intrusive.

"You... you lousy little hedgehog!"

"Unlimited color! LASER, DRILL, ROCKET, CUBE, SPIKES, FRENZY (and everything nice)!"

*Eggman is knocked off the ship, magically transforming into a Powerpuff Girl Egg-shaped cloud*

Said all this to myself when I gazed at your picture. :P

Pretty cool result! It catches the final blow moment from a different perspective very well. Maybe some fireworks to show the damaged state of the machine would further enhance the feel of the scene, but I see that robots ain't your thing (complicated design FTL, yeah) so it's better not to mess with that. Seeing the work step-by-step was amusing too, it helps me to better understand how artists get their works done.

Lastly, I thought I was old fashioned when I told people I use Paint Shop Pro 6 (typical response I get: "UES ADOEB PHOTOSHOPZ!"). Now I know someone who uses an even older version and does great with it, hahaha!

Keep up the good work!

Thanks! :)

And like I said, I still put it all together in Photoshop. X3 Paint Shop Pro can't do layers, transparencies etc, but yeah, I still did the bulk of it in that!

As for drawing it blowing up, eh. Just... no. XD Also, there was defeinitely some compromise between accuracy and what looked good, particularly in the shading.

Epic, epic win. :)

I bloody hated that last boss on the Nintendo Wii version of the game, but this picture? Makes me want to play it again.

Sign of a damn good picture, that! :D

Well done and *hugs* to Mahzes!

Wow. That is seriously awesome!

You've perfectly captured the most memorable moment of the entire game and, by jove, I love it!

Riiight, since it's almost five years since the original Sonic Riders, I felt I should take another shot at drawing Jet.

Work in progress, but hardly a major project. I'll probably finish it tonight or tomorrow. :) I'm going to do two versions, one coloured normally, and one in the classic Riders style. I didn't draw his feet because they're not going to be visible in the finished picture anyway. Also, they'd be really hard to draw at that angle. >.>

(Spoiler tagged for 56k... not that I'm sure that even helps...)

Right, finished. :)

The Riders-style one almost ended in disaster after a few mistakes I made in scanning it, but I managed to (mostly) salvage it. It's still annoying that you can see lines you shouldn't be able to in the dark parts, but eh.

Also it bugs me a bit that it's 'incorrect' that Jet is riding normal style as opposed to goofy. I realised this at the pencilling stage, but decided to go with what looked better, rather than what was correct.

It looks nice, especially the Riders style. I don't know why, but I like the penciled version better than the inked one.

I like the 5th anniversary logo too. I think it's the first time I see an anniversary logo for another character than Sonic.

Right, huuuge bump here, but;

Well, I hardly brought my A-game drawing ability to this piece, but seeing as I did it as a commemorative picture to celebrate five years since the beginning of my first (and arguably most popular) fancomic, 'Rapid and the Onion Rings', I wanted to keep true to the Rapid style, which wouldn\'t really work too well with 'serious' drawing.

But yeah, damn. It's hard to believe that it\'s been five years since I did this comic. So many fond memories of it, and by extension, of Sonic and the Secret Rings.

Awesome! >xD I lolled really hard at Rapid and the Onion Rings, so seeing this totally brings back the hilarious memories too! I hope another Rapid adventure happens soon! Nyee!
