Sonic Creator Goes Multiplatform on Wii and 3DS

A few months back, Famitsu revealed that Prope, the studio from Sonic the Hedgehog's Yuji Naka, was working with Kadokawa Games on a new title. That title at long last got its reveal in this week's Famitsu.

Tenkuu no Kishi Rodea is a "sky fantasy" game for Wii and 3DS. That's right, our first Wii and 3DS multiplatform release!

Famitsu says that the game is being brought to us by Naka and writer Takumi Miyajima. Miyajima has previously worked on the Tales series and Arc Rise Fantasia.

Rodea is the name of the game's main character. Also introduced in the magazine are characters named Ion and Princess Cecilia.

Gameplay details are a bit scarce at present. The game is described as a "new feel action game." The Wii version will use the Wiimote exclusively. Screenshots in Famitsu show sky-based gameplay, but Famitsu says there will be a variety of stages outside of just the sky.

In an interview with the magazine, Naka describes the game as "a completely new action game with simple controls." Development on the game started in Fall 2009. At that time, the game Naka and his team were working on was cancelled, and he split his team into two to create their next game.

Famitsu seems to have a big look at Tenkuu no Kishi Rodea this week, so expect further details shortly.

There was some overblown assumption that Naka was hinting the game being a PS360 game, but that proved to be incorrect.

Awesome. Naka's put nothing serious out with Prope, I hope this is his new direction from now on. NiGHTS is a great character, I hope this one is as appealing. As a Sega and Sonic fan, I think I have a soft spot for mascots you know? The NiGHTS forums are gonna bug out.

oh god my neck

That is one mighty fine jacket. This game certainly looks a lot more visually interesting than Ivy the Kiwi. :P

I've honestly never played either of the NiGHTS games, so if this turns out to be good it could be a nice introduction to that gameplay style. I'm definitely intrigued.

I have NO CLUE why Nintendo Everything rotated the first two scans like that. O_o

Here they are in proper form:

This sounds interesting indeed! And We already get not half bad scans with screenshots! Sure looks NiGHTS like with the grassy areas, just look at those areas, and NiGHTS springs to mind.

More info:

- roughly translates to Machinist of the Sky Rodea

- Wii controls: point Wiimote to move and rapidly shake or press the B button to pick up speed

- point and press A to use gun

- prototype of the game was deemed to be too complicated by Naka

Oh wow, I am not usually too interested in many Wii titles because I absolutely loathe motion controls, but I am really digging what I see so far. I hope this does insanely well, and I am very interested in playing it! Even if I cannot get it for the Wii I do plan on getting a 3DS at one point if it turns out to be good (which it looks great so far based off what little I can see). I hope it makes it to this side of the world too :)

This could turn out to be the first Prope game that I get. I was wondering when Naka would decide to do something useful with his company, because it had been looking like his ideas were not to my tastes before this game got announced. No offense to fans of Let's Tap or Ivy The Kiwi, but they seem kind of weird for my tastes.

Here's hoping it's good!

For your taste it's understandable, but I will point out that both were typical Naka games. Look at his profile beyond Sonic and you get things like Burning Rangers, NiGHTS into Dreams, ChuChu Rocket!, Phantasy Star (Online), Billy Hatcher & the Giant Egg... He always has a bit strange but immensely fun titles he works on and tries something unique with each one. Let's Tap and Ivy the Kiwi were both in this style, simple to play but still very fun games.

That said I am happy he is going to a more mainstream genre as Let's Tap was a higher-class minigame collection and Ivy the Kiwi was a puzzle game. This one really has my interests.

It's about freaking time Prope decided to step beyond making no-name games and into territory worth paying attention to.

Doesn't seem all that great, looks pretty generic so far. I was hoping for something more of the unique and whimsical charm of Naka's previous games.

I thought I'd have to wait longer for news on this, but I guess this is a proper announcement!

Some things that crossed my mind...

Naka said he could've used this gameplay for a new NiGHTS game. Wonder if he still thinks of that series or if he's just letting us know this will be familiar?

Lots of games try on steampunk today. I thought maybe it had nothing left to offer visually, then I saw the scans with the dark looking Iron Giant. I am fucking sold.

The protagonist has a pistol thing and has some kinda tail-rudder between his feet. I guess flying is mechanical.

Does the timing of this have anything to do with Kid Icarus, and will it be eclipsed by that game?

Glad to see one of the greats developing a new IP. PROPE fuck yeah!

I think it's hilarious how much Hoopla Iizuka made about the (terrible) Wiimote controls in Journey of Dreams, and then this comes along.

I am very interested. Sega isn't publishing it? To be honest, I kinda don't think they really deserve it at this point, though I hope the publisher that does have it can support it, and that it comes west.

What does CV stand for?

Character voice.

Also, game looks neat! I'll most probably never play it, but it's nice to see Naka back in the game making what appears to be an epic title once again.

The game looks nice, but I'm not sure about the controls. I would like a GC controller support option.
