I understand all of that, I'm just trying to get across my point that very few westerners grew up with the Japanese variant of the series; I mean, nobody in this country grew up with a "Dr. Eggman." We grew up with and became decidedly attached to the western version of the story. We do not feel any similar attachment to the Japanese original; it leaves us cold.

There isn't much they can do about that other than just having westernisation. Calling Robotnik....er...Robotnik instead of Eggman. About the humans, well, its safe to assume Sonic lives on Mobius, but that mobius is also inhabited by humans. Its just a paralell to Earth rather than Earth itself

And yet they played just as big a role in forming my childhood experience of Sonic as the games.

Nothing SEGA can do about this. They can't just insert parts of the comic and TV programme canon into the game canon. Partially because the already large cast will get positively massive, and partly because each of the comics/TV programmes contain a different canon and the story would be fucked over quite badly.

The only thing Sega made canon from the shows were the insertion of chili dogs, but that's another situation since it really doesn't affect the Japanese canon that much.

I understand all of that, I'm just trying to get across my point that very few westerners grew up with the Japanese variant of the series; I mean, nobody in this country (born in the 1980s or 1990s) grew up with a "Dr. Eggman." We grew up with and became decidedly attached to the western version of the story. We do not feel any similar attachment to the Japanese original; it leaves us cold.

I've never particularly even did so much as look up the Japanese variant of the series, so I know nothing about it.

All I know is that the Japanese called him Eggman, but something like that is rather insignificant to get worked up over. And this is from someone who grew up in 90s and used the name Robotnik as much as any other fan before SA1.

Sure it's still in development... but when I see modern stages I see Sonic Unleashed 2, and that disappoints me, because that got old really fast. And I don't think Unleashed changed that much from it's early development either, a few enemies placed in different areas but that's about it...

Eggmanland. EGGMANLAND.

You try just pressing X in that stage and see where that takes you.

What I'm saying is, its not going to be like that the whole game, because the Levels in Unleahed got HARDER, and required PRECISION. ITs not just "Hold X to Win" like everyone says it is.

I'm not asking to do any of that. They just played a major role in forming my early experiences with Sonic, and the same is true of many people in my age bracket. Sega just ignored that influence, the preferences that outside media developed and pretty well forced us to cater to their unfamiliar (and, to many, inferior story, names etc) ruffled a lot of feathers and put a lot of people off. Many saw it as part of Sonic's decline.

But, I digress (probably), and would like to leave all this alone now so other people can discuss things going south.

I thought Sega tried to fix things by technically giving him both names though...One being a nickname and the other real. :r

His full name is technically "Dr. Ivo"Eggman" Robotnik" but I guess to differentiate between the two, Classic will be called Robotnik, while Modern will be called Eggman, or maybe Sonic will come up with something clever.

Alright, lets get this straight people.

This is Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik

For Sonic Generations he shall most likely be called "Classic Eggman" while the other is called "Modern Eggman"

Any questions?
