I dunno about that...Sky Sanctuary does need a chase sequence. Mecha Sonic in the wrecking ball could be interesting.

Isn't Mecha Sonic a prototype of Metal Sonic?

So Sonic CD (Timeline wise) plays after Sonic3&Knuckles / Sonic 4 Episode I.

Eggman created finally a perfect copy of Sonic in Sonic CD.

Why do I write this?

Because I guess we will fight Metal Sonic after Sky Sanctuary (Because of the order of the games. It will be the same order at Generations)

So I highly doubt that we will see Mecha Sonic there as well.

Also, I have to say that since Metal Sonic is in the game I don't really see the need for Mecha Sonic to be in the game, even though Sky Sanctuary wouldn't feel the same without him. But it'd be pretty cool if he was in the game.

Well, Ken Baloughs said that Sonic CD comes before Sonic 4 but after Sonic 3 and Knuckles in the timeline, so Mecha Sonic is probably a prototype of Metal Sonic, the longest lasting Sonic copy in the franchise. Why SEGA decided to tie the beloved Sonic CD to the Dimps fan-game is beyond me, but hey, Sonic CD's place in the timeline was more vague than Tommy Wiseou's accent anyway.

Anyhow, Metal Sonic's already being fought in Stardust Speedway, but if his fight is gonna be tied to any level, it would be Chemical Plant, due to the similar skylines and architecture. Though I'm still not sure how the boss and rival battles will be handled, if they'll be their own stand-alone levels or if they'll take place in levels in the game. We'll have to wait and see I guess. Also, I gotta say, why do people keep expecting to see Mecha Sonic if Metal Sonic's already in the game?

Who knows what it will finally look like. It might end up having a yellow-ish tinge.

In any case, its not like it really matters. The new textures make it look a lot more like withered stone than then yellow-y stuff in the classics.

I think they handle it with the timeline of the Sonic Games.

I could image that they don't use any boss after Green Hill; After Chemical Plant: Death Egg and after Sky Sanctuary - Metal Sonic.

There was something about 'boss keys' in the files, so you probably access them (in their respective era) when you choose rather than them following a timeline. EDIT: Here's the information courtesy of Dusk Golem:

From what I understood reading through the Generation demo dumps, Modern Sonic and Classic Sonic each have to collect boss keys, one each per stage (two total).

The game is split into three areas, each with three stages and two bosses, representing a different era of Sonic. There are six boss keys in each area, spread across the three stages. To unlock the rival boss, you must collect three keys. To unlock the boss, you must collect six keys. You unlock the next stage in a area by completing the normal stage for Modern and Classic Sonic each. You unlock the next area by beating the boss.

I don't exactly know how you get keys besides that you must complete other acts/missions in the stage. Whenever you just have to complete one extra total out of choice, or a specific mission, I don't know.

But I can say, with confidence, from what I read bosses are unlocked by collecting Boss Keys (like in Unleashed), which are obtained through extra acts/missions, 6 per area (three stages per area), and you unlock the next area by beating the boss.

I'm still disappointed that Sky Sanctuary is so unyellow.

It does look quite different, but perhaps the lighting will sort that out. I'm so looking forward to seeing this stage. The remaining levels are the ones I'm most curious about.

Well those are textures and their color can be changed. I want MOAR yellow.

Oh and chase sequence can be running to the top of falling tower just like after Mecha boss but this time as modern.

First - It's still only speculation. ;)

But if this is the case you still could get the "Keys" for Metal Sonic during Sky Sanctuary for example.

I think I figured out how you get keys. Can someone please post missions list? I think there is one char. Mission per stage (classic and modern) right? So I think other chars. Have keys and you must complete missions that involve them.

I mean they will do cutscenes for them for nothing?

EDIT: I just realized. There are 6 keys per era right? So there are 18 keys in totlal. Just to remind you there are 18 NPC cutscenes and same ammount of characters missions. Coencidence?
