Zones we hate

Aquatic Base in Sonic 06 is just irritating without the purple gem for Sonic so you can bypass the part with the ball. I hate that level so much just because of that segment.

Also, screw Eggmanland from Sonic Unleashed.

Not because they took forever for you to beat  (looking at YOU, Chemical Plant Zone Act II...), but because they were actually, bad stages.

For example, I thought Sky Deck from Sonic Adventure was a terrible stage. The camera angles were wonky, and messed with your controls, it REALLY overstayed its welcome, and there were a lot of places I found tedious, slow moving, and just straight up boring.

So, what were some stages YOU guys hated?

I'm not really crazy about Bingo Highway on Sonic Heroes. The pinball controls for the teams seem kinda sloppy, and there's always a bumper in the exact place I need to go. It was really frustrating trying to get an A Rank on the second mission!

Oh god, where do I start?

Well, let's start with some of the worst offenders in the series...

End of the World:

This entire stage is complete ass, every section of it. Mostly because of the instadeath gravity-pulling eyeballs that appear -everywhere- n like, no time at all. That and I've kind of never liked the whole "let's reuse parts of all the stages for the last stage!" trope because it comes off as not creative and tired at this point, because of how often it's been done. But that's just me.

Dusty Desert (Silver's):

The ball physics are terrible to deal with, especially with the time limit of the balls exploding, and plus every time you hit the balls the counter also goes down. Being punished severely to solve a "puzzle" the intended way is not my idea of fun... good thing there's an easy way to skip the puzzle at the end of the level.

Hidden World Zone 4.

What happens if you combine Pacman with Furbies, and then proceed to use a tedious gameplay mechanic of autoscrolling and jumping between bubbles that you walk on, which contain either spikes or the said Pacman wannabes this stage is known for, this stage seems like it comes straight out of a mobile game.

Sky Road Zone 2:

What's more fun than an autoscroller? An autoscroller with platforms that will disappear if you take too long. Also, I hope you like badly thought out boss fights, because the worst boss in Lost World is here.

Sky Road Zone 4:

If you thought the previous zone was bad... here's a stage which you are mostly moving upwards, and moving back down becomes impossible, because it's treated as a deathpit once the screen scrolls up. Oh, and here's a boss battle which fails to properly explain the mechanic you need to use to defeat him.

Casino Park/Bingo Highway:

Remember the good old Sonic games with the pinball physics and proper momentum? Sonic Team thought they did, but they failed to do the most important part... making the pinball physics good. It's an absolute mess and it makes the stage more frustrating than fun to play.

Oh, I almost forgot to mention Lava Mountain Zone 2 from Sonic Lost World. Really, it's the only stage in the entire game I had a grudge against. Mostly because there were those mine carts filled with bombs that KO'd you in one hit, no matter how many rings you were carrying. It took me a while to get past that stage, that and a couple of continues.

I think the worst Sonic level of all time is Wacky Workbench because it's a fucking atrocious level that is in an otherwise excellent game.

If we are talking about just flat out worst level of all time in all the other abysmal Sonic games then End of the World in Sonic 06 takes the fucking cake. It's a horribly designed levels that is frustrating as all hell due to the horrible controls and glitches.

Marble Garden. As a kid, I liked that Zone because Tails carried you for the boss battle, but other than that, it was a repetitive chore to slog through. The level felt like it stretched on forever, but offered nothing new as you porgressed. Carnival Night and Mystic Cave suck too. As for later games, Black Forest and Mystic Mansion from Heroes get my vote. As does Music Plant from Advance 2.

Woah woah, Carnival Night is fucking rad! As for Mystic Cave, aside from the pit of death and the spike traps that's a fine level too!

There are so many levels I don't like but here are the worst ones:

Wacky Workbench: That annoying bouce-floor combined with those electric wires, not to mention zone, like many others from Sonic CD, is very maze-like.

Sandopolis act 2: Act 1 is not that bad but in the the second act there are those ghost and light-gimmicks and it's just so long. And then there is that section where youhave to jump off from the right spot or it repeats infinetely. I still don't know which is the right spot.

Sky Canyon: I just find this level so annoying with it's gimmicks and bottomless pits. Worst part is the one where you fly right into a wall of spikes in act 2.

Crazy Gadget: Whole gravity-gimmick not to mention I hate those Artificial Chaoses.

Mad Space: What is with SA2 and gravity? And this level is just huge and with the butchered radar beating the stage can take easily over 20 minutes.

Lost Impact: There are so many bad missions in Shadow the Hedgehog but when you do the neutral mission the levels aren't that bad but this one still is. 1. It's basically a huge maze where everything looks the same so it's very easy to get lost 2. Because of the previous thing, level is very slow, especially those on-rail shooter-sections 3. Those Artificial Chaoses, this game somehow managed to make them even more annoying by giving them a huge healthbars, don't even try to kill them without a weapon, they will take forever 4. In hero mission you have destroy 35 of them and in the level there is only 35 of them and because of the above mentioned problems it's very easy to miss some of them. I spend over 45 minutes in the level before I gave up on looked the locations online. 5. Even if you do the neutral mission (which I did in order to do all the missions), it's still annoying because of the problems I mentioned

End of the World: This level is in 7 sections which all are played by different characters out of the 9 total in the game. And which two don't play it? Sonic and Blaze, the best characters in the game. As a someone who was able to get used to how 06 played there was only one problem: those time portals which are insta-death and their placement is just evil because 1. They spawn in your way 2. You have very little reaction time. I think that the worst sections are Silver and Amy. I got 3 game overs playing 06 first time, two of them came from this level. Meaning watching all the cutscenes and loadtimes again (not to mention, every section is separated by loading screen).

Planet Wisp from Generations: I'm not that big of a fan of wisps and I swear using them was mandatory more times than in original level in Colour (which already had way too much mandatory wisp-using), which isn't fun at all. Not to mention this level is again a marathon regardless of the Sonic I'm using.

Special stages in any game except Sonic 3

To each his own. Personally, I thought the music of Carnival Night was annoying, maybe worst of the whole franchise. I hated the water sections, and those darn barrels! Mystic Cave didn't have anything particularly offensive, It just wasn't interesting. Forgot about End of the World. Man that was a pain.

You know what, I retract Mystic Cave from my list. It's not my favorite, but I don't outright hate it. I would just consider it a least favorite.

I actually don't think End of the World is all that bad. It's more of a challenge than it is a hard level, in my opinion. However, I will agree that Mad Space is a dreadful level.

It's BS Challenge because of godawful controls and glitches that spiral the cheap difficulty out of control. Like everything in Sonic 06, it's atrocious.

I hate Casino Night Zone in Sonic Adventure. Knuckles it was OK but the others. Wow. It took my forever to get 350 rings in that level.

I remember only having one problem on my End of The World run. The Light Dash bit with Shadow, he kept using Chaos Spear. The rest was easy enough.

Anyway, my choice for Level I hate the most? I will say a level and a mission.

hqdefault.jpg

Mad Matrix, Dark Mission. Having to go round Lost Impact and hunt the Artificial Chaos is a pain but are you in control of yourself? Can you get back to an area quickly if you mess up? Yes. In Mad matrix you are perpetually going forward and have to make quick choices if you want to go left or right. You have to go across the expansive map and destroy 30 bombs. Oh you missed one in the blue? You have to pick an extensive course to get there. Miss a turn? You may have to go all the way round again. This was the ultimate ugh moment in my mission. Every time I came to do this one, it would take way too long. Never again Doomy!

My older sister is the only person in the world who loves Mad Space. :P I don't think I've never actually played it myself, but just watching her it looks very annoying!

I don't mind Tails, but I really do not like Sonic's at all. It's one level I basically just don't want to replay, if for no other reason than it feels like a mini Adventure Field with a slot machine game instead of a proper Sonic level with running, platforming, fast-paced action, etc. Not my cup of tea, it just plain isn't much fun for me. Sonic Adventure had enough non-"Sonicy" levels as it is in the form of the other characters' gameplay styles anyway. (Though for the record, it's actually called Casinopolis.)

Oh, and I'm not a big Carnival Night Zone fan myself. I want to love it, it has really fun visuals and really interesting gimmicks, but whenever I play it it seems to take forever. To say it overstays its welcome would be a vast understatement. Also, those barrels are simply unforgivable from a game design standpoint (as well as a "sheer flaming annoyance" standpoint). Still, I'm not going to say it's a bad level overall, there are certainly good things about it, it just annoys me s'all.

Sandopolis Zone Act 2 also takes way too long and tends to bore.

Sky Chase. To be honest, any auto scrolling Tornado level. I do think it's a cool idea, they're just all so boring.

Normally if I'm playing Sonic Adventure or Sonic 2 something, this is the part where I stop. Surprisingly, my favorite Tornado levels are actually the ones from Unleashed. It adds like a bigger amount of stress compared to how the other games handle it, so it's just less boring I guess since you're feeling some sort of tension instead of just slowly flying around just waiting for it to end.

Speaking of Shadow the Hedgehog, remember the Space Colony ARK level with Maria? Can't remember the missions, but I remember it took me forever!

Screw all the day time stages in Unleashed (except for like... Windmill Isle Act 1 and Rooftop Run Act 1).

And screw Tropical Coast Zone 3 (in Sonic Lost World, for those who don't know). The stage was glitchy as hell (because I'm using --F30) and ugh... I just don't like grinding levels.

Also, I don't like a lot of the treasure hunting levels in SA2... ugh.

Ah, the Lost Impact Hero mission where you must search the colony over and stop all 35 Artificial Chaos. Yeah, not a fan of that one, either, due to the unfitting focus on exploration present there. At least the music there was lovely enough to make the stage more tolerable.

I might as well chime in with another from Shadow the Hedgehog; Central City. I always found this stage ludicrously difficult thanks to the nature of the mission and the extremely specific way the bombs needed to be disposed of, and for the fact that for some reason I just kept getting lost.

After recently replaying Shadow, this level gave me quite a bit of trouble:

File:Shadow cosmic fall.png

With the game's bad controls and wretched level design, I found myself hearing "Damn, not here!" more than I should have here.  Now that think about, the actual platforming was probably the worse thing about Shadow the Hedgehog.

  • 5 weeks later...

I feel like I must've played a different version of SA2 to everyone else, as I find Security Hall to be one of Rouge's easiest levels (probably Rouge's smallest level, and much less of a maze than Mad Space and Egg Quarters).

Although some of the trickier treasure hunting and shooting stages make me groan, the one that I have more of a passionate hate for is Final Rush. Trying to A rank that one is an absolute pain, with the one massive bottomless pit and the broken rail grinding physics (will I switch rails, do a trick, jump off, or fall to my death - who knows?)

I also dislike Eggmanland (Day) Wii (not yet had the pleasure of playing HD yet, unfortunately!). This took me ages simply because of cheap deaths, such as unexpected sharp turns popping up while at high speed. This is the only day level I have no desire to return to.

I'm also not keen on Planet Wisp from Generations, partly due to its length, but mostly for the wisps breaking up the pace. It's a shame because the start of Act 2 is fantastic.

I agree with you here, I thought the level was absolutely beautiful at the beginning. It's probably my most disliked stage. Could be the fact that I don't find the other 80% of the stage very appealing.

I know that in Colors Planet Wisp is being turned into a theme park and stuff, but this level kind of rubs it in your face, know what I mean? I think I would have enjoyed it a lot more if they would have used either a different level from Colors, or kept with the style of the stage they began with.

Hmm... Zones that I hate:

  • Labyrinth
  • Oil Ocean
  • Sandopolis (act 2)
  • Sky Deck
  • Jungle Joyride (Night only, in PS2 version)

Well, they're the levels that I hate
