Zones we hate

Gaming Misfit

I fucking hate Crisis City in Sonic Generations.

I hate how bland it looks, I hate how it represents 06 because Generations was already mediocre enough before 06 levels just added to the shit, I hate how linear it is, I hate how it's just a mess of bad and cheap platforming, I hate how the Classic level pretends you finished it before taking the post away from you (seriously, what kind of dick move is that), and I hate the music.

All the intensity of the original Crisis City is gone and replaced by butt-rock for Classic and "generic orchestral fan made remix number "10413" (which is the only reason we got Classic with the butt-rock as Jun Senoue just couldn't not put butt-rock into every level).

Most of all though, I hate how they got rid of all the spectacle. I mean City Escape Modern only improved the spectacle by having a longer and much more engaging truck chase but Crisis City just takes the awesome mach speed section and shortens it, as well as adding some side bullshit nobody cares about. And Modern Green Hill also has that amazing giant chopper section that thrills me every time, so just having some watered down mach speed section with alternate paths (defeating the object of going forward while avoiding obstacles at high speed, much?) was just such a disappointment. And where was all the grinding? There were only two rails, both of which were optional, when Crisis City original (a much better stage than this, even though 06 is abysmal and should have never been put into this game, seriously I lost loads of respect for Generations when I found out this clusterfuck was here) had lots of variety with it's grinding. I mean I know you're just tapping X over and over again, but you've got to time it, you know? Here you just don't get to grind and just do some bullshit platforming to the end, Sonic's about speed dammit! Even 06 in it's badness knew this as did some parts of Generations but god fuck the platforming just killed it. This is why Unleashed is the best game in the franchise.

Rant over.

Of course, being April Fools yesterday, this was a dumb joke post. My bad.

I can't stand knuckles stages in SA2, ^^". Like all of them take me forever to beat when I wish I could just be running around with Sonic or Shadow, XD. I don't even mind playing as Tails or Eggman since the combos are fun, but the stages as Knuckles or Rogue are just boring, X3. Exspecially Meteor Herd and the other space one for Rogue D=.

Oh my God, yes! I swear it took me 40 minutes to complete Pumpkin Hill the first time, and Knuckles' space level took me, and I kid you not, 2 hours! It was horrible!

Sonic The Hedgehog (original): Labyrinth Zone, as well as Marble. Both are so tedious and slow.

Sonic 2: Hill Top Zone. Just didn't stand out to me at all. Bores me to death on playthroughs.

Sonic 3: Carnival Night: Not nearly as much fun as Casino Night, and it doesn't have slot machines sad.png

Also, the barrel.

Sonic and Knuckles: Sandopolis Zone. For reasons explained above, as well as the stupid 'Light and dark ghosts' in Act 2. It REALLY overstayed it's welcome.

Sonic Adventure: Lost World. I hate this stage. It's full of unnecessary puzzles, and it has the water snake.

Big in general is boring. Also, Hot Shelter. It really doesn't help that none of the good characters traverse this stage at all.

Sonic Adventure 2: Mad Space, Eternal Engine and Lost Colony. Mad Space is confusing and large, Eternal engine goes on for an eternity and the darkness in Lost Colony makes it hard to see. Especially in the DC version.

Sonic Heroes: Rail Canyon and Bullet Station. I want to like these stages. I really do. But when the grind controls are so goddamn finicky, it's almost impossible to change rails before you get hit by a train. Good luck not falling off.

Shadow the Hedgehog: The Doom and Lost Impact. Stupid sprawling, oversized maze stages. The missions basically consist of 'hunt and destroy so many of certain object'. GAH.

Sonic 06  Sonic: Dusty Desert and Aquatic Base. Dusty Desert bores me to no end. Aquatic base had those boring 'destroy room of enemies' and 'homing attack challenge' sections that made me want to quit by the time I was done.

Shadow: Kingdom Valley. Rouge's treasure hunting is unnecessarily long without a radar, and the hovercraft section is pot luck at best with it's schizophrenic camera angles.

Silver: Everything except Kingdom Valley. I just don't like playing as him at all, but since I love Kingdom Valley, and you play as Sonic for a short while in there, I'll let it off.

Unleashed HD: Eggmanland. Switching between Sonics was really annoying, and broke up the action. Also, it is SO GODDAMN LONG! My record for finishing this level is somewhere around 40 mins. I HATE IT.

Unleashed SD: Eggmanland (night) Again. Although the day level was a blast to me, the 5 night ones made me forget any joy I had there as they were all so cheap and long.

Colors: None. I really like all of these stages, even if this isn't my favourite game ever. The bosses suck though.

Generations: Crisis City, Rooftop Run, City Escape, and Speed Highway. I don't have much against these levels individually, but the fact that there were so many city themed levels pissed me off greatly. I would have much rather had some stages like Cool Edge, Kingdom Valley, and maybe Pyramid Cave or Crazy Gadget to balance things out a bit more.

Storybook series: Every level. I hate these games so much. The lack of control is so goddamn annoying, and SatBK is basically a waggle fest.

Advance: Egg Rocket. Full of cheap deaths.

Advance 2: True Area 53. I know it's not really a zone, but come on, did ANYBODY like this boss?

Advance 3: OCEAN BASE.

Rush: Every level.

Rush Adventure: Pirate Island. Surprisingly, I actually quite like this game. Probably because of the more fleshed out stories. But this level was such a pain in the ass.

EDIT: Man, I forgot Sonic CD!

Sonic CD: Quartz Quadrant. Like most of the levels on my list, just didn't do much for me.

Ocean Base from Sonic Advance 3

GOD OCEAN BASE. ;_;

I recently decided to play Sonic Advance 3 on an emulator and when I made it to Ocean Base, I just stopped. Everything in this level is completely unfair and made to kill you. I just couldn't deal with it.

Really this illustrates that sometimes a minimap really is a good idea. Then again Shadow the Hedgehog was an attempt to make Sonic a Grand Theft Auto clone without all the good things Grand Theft Auto has such as an open-ended missions system (three at every given time does not count!), an expansive overworld, and a more mature storyline that doesn't reek of idiocy and attempts to censor it all. Jak 2 took a lighthearted series and made it dark wonderfully, and I see no reason Sonic Team couldn't have done the same with Shadow's game.

But yes, those stages really were crazy due to their size and the difficulty of the objectives therein without a map. I guess it's called Lost Impact for a reason...

You know what level I really hate? Arid Sands in Unleashed. Both day and night. Day has far too many obstacles and I'm always running into them whether I'm boosting or not. And the level design doesn't really do all that much for me. And Night is always a pain to complete because of those freaking wasps. I hate those damn things.

LABRYNTH ZONE

THAT... Is almost my most hated zone! Actually I never thought deeply about my most hated zones, so I can't say for sure.

But I really... Really hate the Labyrinth zone.

Sometimes I find some acts really annoying until I get used to them, Lost Labyrinth zone is okay, but the second act, World of Darkness got me confused a little bit the first time I played it, but then I got used to it and actually found a way to enjoy it, well, it eventually won't be a problem with Super Sonic, it won't be World of 'Darkness' anymore.

Wacky Workbench and its way of playing bowling with my eyes. Not to mention the spring-y floor. I hate that level, and I always try to finish it as fast as possible, past signals be damned.

I had the exact same problem with Metropolis Zone. I used to find it a really frustrating level. Now I find it one of the easiest stages in the game.

That reminds me, Casino Park and Bingo Highway are one of those annoying for the first time stages, but it's only a matter of time, even getting A rank in these stages can get easier over time.

Yup, it's just like, the more you play the more you get the hang of it. You realize in the end that it's not a hard level, but it just needs some time to get used to it.

Now I just remembered a particular act... That I consider the most hated... and the freaking worst act of all Sonic games... Collision Chaos 3! Stupid pinball act...

I got Sonic CD for PC a while ago, and I'm still stuck in this irritating level.

Oh god, did you have to bring up Collision Chaos Act 3? That stage was shit. I personally don't consider it the worst stage ever, but it is a pretty sucky one all the same.

It's frustrating because if you get lucky you can beat that level in under 30 seconds, and other times it can easily take over two minutes.

I like the pinball-concept idea for the boss in that zone. The problem is the pinball-flipper physics which absolutely suck. Not implemented well. Half the time you just fall through the flippers which shouldn't be possible. Playing as Tails makes it more bearable of course, but those ball things that Eggman throws at you-which send you straight back down, are even more annoying.

Uh, let's see.

- Lost World in Sonic Adventure, it's not the entire level, but just the part with that rock snake the swims in a circle, it's kinda buggy and it's hard to stay on long without falling over the edge.

- Mad Space in Sonic Adventure 2, I can't explain how much I dislike this level. The biggest thing is how big the level is, and how the gravity switching constantly throws me off. Not to mention the hint TVs that aren't even useful most of the time, are now written backwards and some even lie.

- I forget the name, but the Castle Level in Sonic Heroes, I know there's 2 but I really don't care for either.

- Sonic '06, I think the Jungle one has to be my worst level. The thing is it's kind of hard to begin with, but now you have to hold onto Elise which takes away most of your powers, some things are glitchy as well.

- Seaside Hill in Sonic Generations, I think the Sonic Team Director said he even wanted to have Rail Canyon in the game instead of Seaside Hill.

That's about all I can think of!

Do bosses count? If so, then I'm thinking maybe Tails vs. Eggman (II) in SA2. Man, that's like a one minute boss and the sheer amount of lives I lose on that boss every time is just meh.

What would you say if I told you that it once took me..... 10 minutes to lose?

Speaking of lucky, sometimes if you bounce on top of these balls they can send you up and higher.

I used to hate this one, but only because it's a little glitchy.

Ah Mad Space. It took me between three and hour hours to find a single emerald shard there one time. No, I'm not kidding. And don't ask why I didn't just restart the level and thus reset the emerald locations.

I am proud of my last run-through of this game, though - less than 3 minutes to complete this particular stage. Without hints mind you. ^_^

Three minutes without hints? You must be very lucky..! Well, unless you just dug around in particular places, and found the second or the third or both before the first one?

Still, no matter how someone masters any Treasure Hunting stage, some luck is needed anyways, that's for high ranks of course.

Yeah, luck was pretty much what did it. Of course, the same can be said for pretty much all the treasure-hunting levels.

The best time I have (so far) is 02:37:47 in Rouge's mission Security Hall with rank B from the first try...

But that's of course... With so much luck, and a stage so small (compared to the others).

Be thankful you weren't playing the pre-release version- it's even worse on there! You get hurt by the ink from the squid Badniks everytime they shoot. Doesn't matter if they're on screen or if the ink hits you, you'll still drop your rings. Bloody nasty glitch that is.

Bingo Highway (Team Dark)

Man, this really annoys me. I don't know why but I always do worse with Team Dark on this stage then with any team and that winds me up. I have been able to clear Power Plant with ease since I was four and everyone else my age never beat that stage, but Bingo Highway just throws stuff at you all the time. The worst bit is near the end where you have to go down the huge pinball table. The controls make it twice as hard as it should be.

Marble Zone in Sonic 1:
Why?  Because... I'm not sure... but every time I play it, I'm overwhelmed with dissatisfaction.

Crisis City in Sonic '06:
Why? For obvious reasons.

That's pretty much it. I loved all the other zones in the games that I've played.

I actually kinda like Bingo Highway... probably that kickass song.

...But I agree that Ocean Base is awful. It's dark, gloomy, has unmemorable music, and is just unsatisfying to play.

Is it because that tornado's carrying a car?

There's a simple explanation with that. You probably don't do as good because Team Dark is the "Intermediate" leveled Team, meaning their levels are much more difficult than others.

Savannah Citadel Night: Thank god my cousin was over, or else I may not have gotten past this level. I'm probably an idiot for saying this, but I was stumped on the spinny rotating platforms for a while.

Cyber Track act 3: Way too many bottomless pits and crushers in this level. Seriously, I hate levels that force you to keep up with moving platforms.

Collision Chaos Boss: This boss can go straight to hell! It took me forever to reach the top and hit him my first time playing!
