All-Stars Racing Transformed: The Track Roster Thread

02 May 2012 - 02:18 PM

(Literally stealing Barry's topic here lol)

Posted Image

Confirmed New Tracks:
Ruined Palace - Panzer Dragoon
Temple Tumble - Super Monkey Ball

Confirmed Remix Tracks:
Death Egg Hangar - Sonic The Hedgehog
Shibuya Downtown - Jet Set Radio

Rumoured Tracks:
Green Hill Zone - Sonic The Hedgehog
Chemical Plant Zone - Sonic The Hedgehog
Casino Street Zone - Sonic The Hedgehog
Space Channel 5 themed track.

SASRT is also all about the tracks. This is the thread where we discuss just what racetracks will be in the game. A few ground rules:

• No lists - You can talk about tracks you'd like, but have some sort of explanation behind them and don't just rattle off a dozen names with tiny notes next to each one "Every single ShTH stage - i luv it! Sweet Mountain - So cute, needz 2 b in the game! >_<"

• Try not to be too crazy - Of course there are tracks we want in the game, but be rational. The Egg Carrier Chao Garden and The Sonic 2 Options Screen are not going to be tracks.

• Cite sources if you know of them - With all the interviews and previews flying about, a lot of new info is out there. If you come across an article that backs up a character's potential, please share it. Sharing is caring.

I'll try and update the (incredibly tacky and effortless) image here as often as I can.

Fridge Brilliance in Video Games

29 March 2012 - 11:42 PM

Dammit TV Tropes has ruined my life, I should be in bed but instead I'm reading about Fridge Brilliance Moments in Pokemon and I'm not even sorry.

Copying and pasting the TV tropes definition of Fridge Brilliance because I can't even begin to put it into my own words:

Quote

First impressions are really important; they build opinions and form relationships. If you screw up a first impression, it can be disastrous. You wish you could do it all over again, and once an opinion is set, it is very hard to change it.

But every once in a while, it could be years later or the next day, you may gain a new respect for what you used to hate. It could be upon receiving additional information, or just that you have grown up a little. Fridge Brilliance is this very idea.

You watch a movie and something about it just seems off, you don't like it. One night, as you get up for a midnight snack, you open the refrigerator door and the light dawns on you, "This is the real purpose behind this plot!"

Because you had that epiphany, what once was a hated moment has become one of your favorites.

I had never even thought about stuff like this before until stumbling across this page, it's amazing how much makes sense with just a little bit of thought (or fan wank) pumped into it. Of course it's not hard to over think something and come up with some logic that maybe even the original creator didn't think of.

This one was particularly interesting to me (Copy + Pasting the entire thing so it makes sense but I'm reffering to the bolded part)

This troper just put two and two together. Lugia used to reside on the top of one of two towers in Ecruteak City, though it now lives deep in the Whirl Islands. It is known to have the power to both calm and give rise to storms. Several Pokédex entries mention that Lugia isolates itself because its powers are too strong. Now, back to the two towers in Ecruteak. One of them is still standing; the other one burned down when it was suddenly struck by lightning. Guess which one Lugia used to roost on?
  • I think that was supposed to be obvious...
  • This troper read the whole thing and realized Lugia IS the master of the beast trio, with Suicune (Water-typed, the rain in the storm), Raikou (Electric-typed, the lightning bolt), and Entei (Fire-typed, the Fire that burned it down) that were created DURING the incident.
  • Yet all three of them died from the fire, and Ho-Oh is the master of them for bringing them back to life.
    • Reading these two previous statements, it makes even MORE sense the Lugia is the Master of the Bird Trio. They all fly, staying in the sky, and as such it can be taken that they represent snow storms (Articuno) thunder storms (Zapdos) and heat storms (Moltres). Lugia can both calm and give rise to storms!
    • Only one little problem with that theory: What the heck is a "heat storm"?
    • Probably meant fire storm. Like during the Victoria bushfires in Australia a year or two back...
    • Heat wave, maybe? Not a particularly flashy kind of weather, not like a thunderstorm or blizzard, but deadly all the same.
    • And another bit of Fridge Brilliance: the Pokemon that died in the storm were probably Flareon, Vaporeon and Jolteon, but came back as Entei, Suicune and Raikou due to Ho-Oh's powers.
    • ...Which is backed up by the Beast Trio's Dream World abilities being the same abilities said Eeveelutions possess normally!
Oh my god, the Kimono Girls in Ecruteak City all use Eeveelutions as well. Mind = BLOWN.

I'd love to know if anybody here had any moments of realisation like this in relation to videogames, or if you've ever read any really interesting ones? This stuff is really interesting to me xD

Does Eggman enjoy being defeated?

12 January 2012 - 02:51 AM

So I was just thinking about something; Does Eggman actually like being defeated and get a kick out of making robots that *obviously* won't defeat Sonic?

Look at it this way, something as planet conquering as say the Death Egg obviously stands a chance of actually defeating Sonic and still he managed to destroy it but when it comes to random boss fights, from a storyline point of view, it seems kinda redundant to use a wrecking ball or something with a giant hammer over and over again.

Don't even get me started on the Egg Dealer either. Fair enough Eggman did just kinda find himself roped into the events of Shadow The Hedgehog so probably didn't have anything planned for the situation but SERIOUSLY? A vehicle with the ability to power up the person it's in combat with!? Eggman obviously knew it was Shadow he would be facing so the why the hell include such a function? Whoops.

Obviously I understand random boss fights exist for gameplays sake but as far as the storyline is concerned it just seems more like Eggman enjoys the fight itself using a random creation as opposed to actually intending on beating Sonic, or just likes the build-up to finally getting to use a gigantic mega robot xD.

I mean, it's not like he's actually using those giant hammers for a reason, he was clearly waiting for Sonic lol.

Character Redesigns

07 January 2012 - 02:44 PM

The design of a character is obviously has no relevance to the gameplay whatsoever, but in this industry franchises tend to undergo drastic makeovers rather frequently, sometimes even to the point where characters only barely resemble their former selves.

I don't really understand the need for this though, I can appreciate that a change in style can create shock value and raise interest in an upcoming game and if a franchise has been revived after a long period of time I can understand developers wanting to give the characters a more modem look.

But when we get redesigns as drastic as the modern Spyro for example I can't help but FUCKS SAKE at the entire concept, if the original design was so popular why change it so much? Fair enough take a franchise in a different direction but surely that can be accomplished without changing the cast entirely? I mean come on, even Pokemon Colloseum managed to convey a darker tone without changing the characters completely!

What are your thoughts on character redesigns?

Have The Adventure Games Lost Credit Due To Other Gameplay Styles?

01 January 2012 - 08:12 AM

To this day I can still play Sonic Adventure 2 Battle with my little brother quite happily, naturally the Sonic/Shadow gameplay tends to be the most frequented multiplayer mode with Hunting coming coming second and Shooting generally avoided altogether.

But it got me thinking how even 10 years down the line the Speed stages in this game are still fun to play, even the dullest of levels like Grind Race are great to dick about in.

Obviously a return to Adventure/2 style gameplay isn't going to happen anytime soon but if Sonic Team went with an entire game of Sonic style gameplay stages rather than bog it down with extra characters with their own gameplay styles would it appeal to you?
