    Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing

It looks to me as thought the difference between the PS360 version and the Wii versions are relatively limited. The Wii version appears to be using polygonal shadows, slightly lower poly cars, and reduced detail on the foliage. The HD versions have real time shadowing (which allows for self shadowing), more detailed cars, and more detailed foliage, perhaps using speed tree. Oh wait, I forgot the reflections. The ones on the HD version appear to be real time, the Wii version is using specular maps. Edit: OK, who voted me down for stating facts? I'm not terribly concerned with ratings, but seriously?

    COMIC: Dr. Nonami

Understanding of the rules: Simply posting a link to my webcomic would be a spammy "advertisement" post. But posting a link, while also providing individual image updates in this very topic, should fall under the parameters of the SSMB rules. I think. That said, the comic is Dr. Nonami, the story of a young scientist as she stumbles into heroism, using her brainpower and gadgets to protect the world from all sorts of nefarious villains! Part action adventure, part slice of life comedy, all character study, this comic hopes to be an endearingly engaging series with a lovable cast of characters! I sincerely hope you enjoy it as I continue posting updates here. Written by me, and drawn by my friend Clara, the comic is a collaborative effort that I'm having a total blast working on. With that said, I will post the pages that are done so far: The cover of issue one, featuring our protagonist! Shenanigans. The fight wages on! But who's she fighting, and why? Robot defeated! Hey, it's Laura, Nonami's friend. Oh snap! It's Dr. Mechano! Future pages will be posted here, naturally. Once the next page is ready, I'll post it here! I'm very excited for this comic, and hope that my story appeals to others as well. Enjoy!

As we all know, sometimes the Personal Discussion area can get a bit... how should I put this? 'Serious.' I was wondering if it would be an idea to have a sticky topic there with a number of groups or agencies who are qualified and specialise in the kind of stuff that we normally get in that topic, e.g. family relationships, bullying, stress, sexual matters etc, and how someone can contact them or get some good advice that is from someone who I would hope is qualified. Potential things I'm thinking of would be Childline, NHS direct and maybe organisations that help us older lot. I wouldn't be surprised if there are some people on here who want to make a topic, but are simply too shy or nervous of a potential reaction, whilst we've had a proud tradition of not being disrespectful in any PD topic, if someone is a prat in one they're usually told where to go before it can generate into something disgraceful. Whilst some of the advice is good, lets be honest, we're not professionals nor are we all qualified therapists or health experts, so I wonder if we should have a sticky topic in place so if someone wants to look into a more professional avenue, it's not a million miles away from the forum they've posted in.

Perhaps, but I'd rather think of them as aquantances who exchange witty banter or something. I mean I guesse in an alternate reality where Eggman wasn't as evil they could be friends, but the whole being on different sides thing kinda stops me from seeing Eggman and Tails sitting down for tea and talking about eachothers day...although that would be funny as hell. -So what did you do today Tails? -I had to save Sonic from a buch of robot frogs with laser vision. -Oh yea I thought i had him that time, more suger Tails?

Redmeanance: Like I said, I do see where you're coming from, but again surely no harm can come from trying to work acceptance of homosexuality into a kids' comic, even if it doesn't really serve any purpose. Sure, it's a bit of a forced cliche, with the old 'moral of the story' in something aimed at kids, but if it does even the slightest thing to quell homophobia, then it's no harm done in my book, anyway. Incidentally, I went back and looked at the original M:25YL to see this Cobar that he apparently ends up with. Rotor's taste in men is terrible. D=

    Too many Hedgehogs?

Agreed. I don't think anyone would be complaining about the number so much if the characters themselve were more appealing. Although all I ever hear from the complainers is that so and so is so annoying, which leads me to believe that it's a no win on Sega's part simply because the complainers have little tolerance to anything that might be considered "annoying behavior." I'm just indifferent about the hedgehogs. I don't really care. And I don't expect Sega to dive into an animal encyclopedia and find the most exotic animal they can that most people have never heard of. Although I have to admit I was little peeved that they did not give Chip a species at all.

He means true 16 bit can only be drawn in that blocky style, as it is 16-bit. A fake HD 16-bit would be built in pixel blocks, but would have the capability of smooth lines. It's like they intentionally limit themselves to appear to be retro. For example: Mega Man 9

    Too many Hedgehogs?

The problem with having a lot of characters isn't purely the number, but the quality. These days a lot of characters (new and old) have been poorly written, unnecessary, and/or unlikable. And I don't think it helps that the fanbase's first reaction is to shun anything new, rejecting characters before they even have a chance to prove themselves. As for hedgehogs in particular, my main problem is that treating hedgehog characters as "safe" (which is apparently what they did with Silver) means we're less likely to see more interesting creatures as characters. If they couldn't even bring themselves to make Silver a mink, I don't see how we're going to get characters with species and designs as unique as, say, the Chaotix.

Well, the way I see it, like it or not, being gay is still very much a minority, and again in most cases is treated as such. That's why it gets the 'different' attention it does. In that sense, it is 'abnormal' in that it's not the majority. I see where you're coming from, but rather than slander Penders for singling out Rotor for homosexuality's sake, I see it as more being 'good on him' for having the guts to try and introduce the matter of accepting gays in a kids' comic.

It's because he is purple. When Dumbledore was said to be gay in the Harry Potter franchise, a million of idiots said that they knew it along because he wore purple clothes. Despite that... I was pissed, and reminding me of it again, even makes me more pissed. Being gay is something natural and usual in life. It should be not pointed out like if it's something special or exotic or abnormal about a character. It's never news, nor is it ever pointed out that character x was planned as heterossexual. No one should give a damn about a character's sexual options. Giving importance to a character being gay or not is a prejudice in itself. This typical behaviour of immature people makes me sick.

Dr. Good Girl, I'd agree in that there's 'not really a point' for the plot to focus on it (or romance in general, as it did when I read it, which annoyed me to no end). However, I do think that, if they'd pulled it off well, it'd have been a great way to help ease kids into the matter and help nurture acceptance of homosexuality in the younger generations, which would then hopefully filter through into the future. The only problem with that in general is that the parents of our current generation are still largely homophobic, and as such even getting a plot revolving around a homosexual character into something aimed at children would be difficult. They'd be likely to get complaints along the lines of "What are you teaching my kids" and whatnot, sadly. Still, I may have hated his writing, but a big thumbs-up to Penders from me on this one. Shame it never carried through. Is anything at all going to be done with it, then? I heard mention of M:25YL, or is that all done and dusted now? Come to think of it, I only ever read the first one. What have they done with Rotor in subsequent future arcs?

    Mario Party: the arcade game

Not that I've ever actually played one, but aren't the Mario Party games a bit slow-paced and overly time-consuming to be ideal arcade material? If Mario Party's anything like Sonic Shuffle, can a single game take an hour or more? Unless they speed up/ tweak the gameplay, it's a bit unfitting for an arcade, surely?

    Shadow's love life

I think the ambiguity, the loose characterization and the series' obvious lack of focus on most things romantic is actually a draw to a lot of people when it comes to shipping. You wouldn't believe the amount of romance fiction there was for Dragonball Z back in the day, for example, a series where the actual author was terrified of including romance. The best place to fill in the gaps, I guess, is where the most gaps exist in the first place. Officially, I doubt there's much to worry about. Teasing's just too much fun for the developers to ever stop doing. I'd be in full support of official Shadow/Espio if it happened, though.

Did Sonic meet Amy or Tails first?

I know I said I was going to drop out of this after getting tired of your bad attitude, Yong, but glancing back at this just grates on my nerves too much. I'm going to just throw it out there once more, point by point, since you keep insisting there's no substance mentioned in any of the arguments. My argument is first and foremost from a development standpoint. - Sonic CD was developed by Sega of Japan with Ooshima at the same time as Sonic 2 was developed by STI with Yuji Naka. - Let me reiterate that point for emphasis, so you can't glaze over it this time: Sonic CD was developed at the same time as Sonic 2. - Sonic CD uses older resources than Sonic 2. It uses sprites from Sonic 1, and does not share the sprite style that was created for Sonic 2, 3, and S&K. - There is nothing at all to say that any concept for Sonic 3 or Sonic & Knuckles existed at the time of Sonic CD's development. That means there is nothing to say that Sonic CD was intended as a sequel to S&K. Because Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles did not exist, but Sonic CD and Sonic 2 did exist at the same time, even if they were not released at the same time, it is thus unlikely that Sega intended Sonic CD to take place chronologically after S&K. Because Sonic has all seven Chaos Emeralds in his possession at the end of Sonic 2, and is with Tails at the end of Sonic 2, and still has all seven Chaos Emeralds in his possession at the beginning of Sonic 3, and is still with Tails at the beginning of Sonic 3, it is strongly inferred that Sonic 2 leads into Sonic 3, since it is also a direct numerical sequel. It is thus unlikely that Sega intended Sonic CD to take place chronologically after Sonic 2. This leaves Sonic CD's most natural, logical, least disputable placement to be before Sonic 2. Comprendé?

Aww, see this is why I love Nintendo stuff. They always capture something so basically fun, like riding around on a train, and then make an entire game around it. I also had a thing for trains as a kid, due to all the anthropomorphic trains around (Little Engine that Could, Thomas the Train). I wonder if Nintendo is deliberately tapping that?

What was the problem with Heroes?

I'll just say up front that I think it was a game that looked better than it played. Some of those environments were just awesome fun to look at as I whizzed through (the haunted mansion, and the fleet stage high in the sky, I forget their names), but compared to SA2, I found the controls too much on the fudgy side, and a lot of places where I could die from things that just plain weren't my fault (bad camera angles, rails or jumps that dumped me in bad places depending on whether or not I was holding the control stick at the time, etc.) So, in the end, Sonic Heroes was one of those games I wanted to like, but I just didn't really have much fun playing after it was all said and done.

    Shadow's love life

Shadeow (Shade-oh). Shadow doesn't "need" a relationship, but of all the characters, he'd probably benefit most from having one. I think every character needs someone they can talk to, if only so the viewer can see into their mind a bit. Characters like Sonic are fine, as even if he wasn't already surrounded by friends, he's outgoing enough that he talks openly with pretty much everyone. Shadow, on the other hand, is very reserved, even with his "friends". Having him form a deeper bond with someone (most likely Rouge, I'd guess) would give him someone he could be more open with, at least to the point of having a normal conversation with instead of being Mr. Frowny all the time. That said, it doesn't need to be a romantic relationship that does this. It just needs to be someone who can pierce through the walls (internal and external) that separate him from the other characters. For example, Eggman's at his best when he has someone to talk to; the E-series in SA, Shadow and Rouge in SA2, Ergo in Unleashed. They aren't romantic relationships, but they still break through the barriers because they're on his side (nominally, at least).

Did Sonic meet Amy or Tails first?

No it doesn't, because Tails not being in Sonic CD if it took place before Sonic CD has a canon explanation. Building on that, it makes much more (subjective) sense canonically for Amy to not be in Sonic 2/3 than it does for Tails to not be in CD. What I am not saying, and what you seem to think I am saying, is that either of these things constitute hard proof that the game takes place before Sonic 2. At most, they are merely allusions. That's exactly what Sonic CD suffers from, which is why what would otherwise be minor inconsistencies actually matter. When there is nothing else to go on, it makes sense to choose the explanation that causes the least problems. Based on the characterization of the characters and the story of Sonic 2, Sonic CD taking place before Sonic 2 causes the least problems. That does not mean that it definitely took place before Sonic 2. Hell, if I still considered Knuckles Chaotix canon, I personally would call it a 50/50 split.

For the Metal-Mecha debate, I always considered them two different lines of Sonic robot. Sonic Adventure proves me right, actually placing both models side by side. The "Silver" Mecha Sonic and sharp looking S3&K bot are different incarnations of the same robot. Who's to say after Metal failed in CD, Robotnik didn't try another approach.

    A silly theory about Amy

Its as much about the viewer as it is about Shadow. It would not convincing to watch a clown remind Shadow of his obligation to save the world, no matter how effective said clown could be. If Amy's looks were to lose credibility, than anyone viewing that scene would be left with a bad taste in their mouths. It would not be right. It would not FEEL right. And if Amy wants to keep playing roles like that, she needs to maintain what little credibility she still has. It is in her character to be taken hostage (no matter how much we complain) so that does not take away from her image. If she was sporting the green tu-tu than the viewer would be less inclined to take her words seriously when the time came for her to be serious. S3&K saw Eggman trick Knuckles into removing his own presence from the object he so zealously protected while somehow getting the Echidna to overlook colateral damage such as SETTING THE ISLAND ON FIRE. yeah, I'd call that a joke. Amy's role has expanded beyond psyco D.I.D.. She has evolved into a emotional support character. While getting kidnapped is well within the scope of her character, it requires no more believability beyond the fact that she exists. To be an emotional support character, she needs to exude some kind of stability and respect in order to make the role effective. If we were to turn her into a bigger joke, than she could no longer play that advanced role. There is no difference, as the same would be true of Knuckles or Tails, but they have no controversial/goofy looking classic design to argue over. And at the same time, a girl that wants to avoid being addressed as a hooker needs to avoid dressing like one. Assumptions will always be made about the way characters are dressed. We cant judge books by their cover but it is a very good insight into what that book is going to be about. Amy took on a new role with her new look and I seriously doubt a return to her classic duds would be capable of filling the current Amy's boots.

    A silly theory about Amy

Hardly. If I was an employer, I really wouldn’t put too much stock into anyone whom came at me without a proper suit. Does that make me shallow? Most certainly not. The same goes for a situation like this. I wouldn’t take advice from anyone dressed as classic Amy by today’s standards (there is a clear difference between being hip, a trend-setter and that) any more than I would be seeking financial consult from random hobo # 1. Does that make me shallow? Most certainly not. The clothes, while noting more than a first impression, give the player insight into what kind of roles the character can play and still be believable. If the Big Boss in Unleashed got up and started rapping with Def Big, than I would not be the only one looking at him funny. His character is not designed to be capable of that, and we wouldn’t infer anything beyond the lolz of the moment. The same is true for my view of classic Amy. Should she stand up to speak from her heart, I would find it much more difficult to believe in the character and would likely leave feeling that they shoe-horned her into a role where she did not belong. Knuckles gullibility has always been a part of his characters personality. Tails got in trouble doing genius stuff and was out foxed by a genius in SA2. Rouge is expected to go gaga for emeralds and Shadow is still a tank. The negative connotations do not take away from these characters legitimacy in what they can and can’t do. For me, changing Amy’s outfit to define her as even more of a joke would.

I'm actually more disappointed that you can only do single player as Mario then I am about no secret characters. It's not really too big a problem for me though because I'd usually choose Mario anyway. Would be nice to do a Luigi game though (don't care about Toads). :/ I can find things that disappoint me in any game really though. The important thing is that I know I'm going to enjoy this game far too much to worry about little inconsequential missed opportunities.

^Somebody just got their first keyboard^ I prefer Sonic 2 tails, and seeing as how Needlemouse is 2D I'm hoping for Tails making a grand return. As for SA2, I was wishing that the mech levels were a 50/50 split of flying and mech walking. Think of it, you fly about and shoot in open spaces, and must transform and walk for tight spaces and hallways.

    A silly theory about Amy

I was under the impression you were speaking about her right now, but if all of this is because she dressed weirdly in Sonic CD, it still strikes me as quite... shallow. A character's personality isn't what he dresses, though it can show a lot about them. What I mean, it's not all there is to it. Shadow only listened to Amy because she talked to his heart, not because she wore a red short dress. And Tails got in trouble in SA (beginning), SA2 (ransomed with Amy) and in Sonic Unleashed, Knuckles was kidnapped in Chronicles at least and is always getting the emerald stolen to the point of being a joke now, Rouge got stuck inside of a vault in SA2 and behaves awkwardly when soemthing shiny is involved, Shadow is always mumbling about his past or Maria until the end of his game, and even stuck inside a refrigerator between SA2 and Sonic Heroes. Why them getting kidnapped, getting in trouble, acting like idiots is good but for Amy is bad then? It's just how a story is constructed. I don't get your point, at all.

    Was American Secession Justified?

Please don't derail my discussion Mr. Admin sir )= We disagree about the relevance of history and that's a fine topic for discussion, but it's not what I want to discuss here. Maybe everyone here is a moron, but as long as we don't break the rules, we have the right to be morons in peace, don't we? I'm a Reagan-minded, Burke-spouting, libertarian American patriot This discussion was purely for fun, and as I was taking the British side, I made use of semantics that supported my side. As Patticus points out, it was technically secession. I'll agree that the violation of the British social contract (i.e. a violation of what the Founders viewed as natural rights) was the justification which the founders attached to independence, secession, etc. I'll also agree that a wide-spread understanding of liberty and the natural rights it protects is important if that liberty is to survive. That said, the Founders were only the head of the Revolution; secession itself could never have happened unless revolution had popular support from the American colonists. To them, Lockean ideas of social contract held little importance compared to the general ideas Patticus laid out in his arguments—Britain violated freedoms traditionally enjoyed by the colonies by imposing illegal or restrictive taxes, and by imposing imperial rule where the colonists had formerly been accustomed to self-rule. Because this had a direct impact on how prosperously the average colonist lived, the average colonist supported the revolution. The Declaration was specifically designed to stand up in a European court of law, and therefore addressed the grievances more exhaustively and philosophically than they practically existed in the minds of actual colonists. That said, I agree with your philosophy completely. I agree. That was partly the purpose of this debate. Apart from the God-fearing bit, I agree. But again, the ideas of the founding fathers are not equivocal to the causes of Revolution. American Constitutionalism and Jeffersonian Libertarianism were more consequences of the Revolution than its cause. Segadogtagz and the rest: I don't have time to respond to your argument tonight, and I'm afraid that I won't be online again for about a week )= I'm still here though, and I'll get back to you as soon as I can x3

I didn't think someone would pull that card so quickly. Nestor and the space pirate are NPCs no more important than Sandra and Wentos.
