For the record, across the whole wide Internet, the friendliest Sonic franchise message board is none other than the SSMB. Here are five critical points to make your stay on the Internet in general a better place: 1) If you only post agreeing to popular opinion for the sake of being popular - as opposed to because that's genuinely how you feel - people will notice and either consider you irrelevant, a grovelling douche, or both. 2) If you post a controversial opinion, some people will get easily butthurt by it and downvote or otherwise express their anus-ache. This is unavoidable. There is always someone who thinks you're an asshole - fuck those guys. 3) If you post an unpopular point of view, you need to make more effort to explain it; the popular view is most popular usually because it lines up with commonly known facts and consensus on the issue, consequently the facts and opinions backing it up are already well-known. Therefore, an unpopular opinion either is being posted by an ill-informed idiot, or by someone who has additional information or another valid interpretation of the facts to present. If you do not explain yourself though, everyone will assume you're in the idiot column. Whether you actually are an idiot or not isn't the point: don't give that impression. 4) Don't try to force a discussion off-topic without establishing relevancy first: people will think you're a douche butting in on the conversation. Usually you actually are a douche butting in when you do that. 5) Don't hunt for good rep. It's like watching paint dry, except paint actually dries eventually. Hunting for bad rep is infinitely more effective. Good luck.

Disclaimer: I will try to give you answers based on what I do know about you and based on previous posts. I cannot guarantee they are what you want to hear, nor can I guarantee I am 100% correct. 1) Arguing with a troll (imagined or otherwise) never gets you ANYWHERE. They feed on your tears, they drink your rage, they eat away at you until nothing is left but anger, hatred, and the urge to pace around in frustration until you dig all the way to China. It also causes confusion, breeds forum wars, and frankly can give everyone who reads/posts a headache. 2)Don't assume that just because someone disagrees with you, they should be lumped into the "FLAMER, TROLL, AND WHINER" category. They might have valid opinions and shunting them into these stereotypes does not help your image with them. 3) You have a bad tendency to constantly gripe about Kingdom Hearts regardless of whether it has anything to do with the topic. This breeds passive hostility, which leads into a angry typing match, with no winners and several bans. The best advice I can give is to try not to jump into conclusions whenever someone disagrees with you, avoid arguing with difficult people (difficult people do not change easily, my grandmother is testament to that )and BE CAREFUL WITH WHAT YOU TYPE, FOR ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING THAT GOES ONTO THE SCREEN CAN BE USED TO COUNTER YOUR BELIEFS AND ARGUMENTS. P.S. I know this stuff because I made (and still make) these mistakes online and IRL a fair number of times.

I thought Sonic 06 was actually a lot more enjoyable than any of those old 16-bit "classics". APRIL FOOOOOOOLS! ...Sorry bout that. But seriously though, i do love Sonic Heroes. It's also, strangely, one of the few games that i played after i started high school that actually fills me with warm, cuddly nostalgic feelings whenever i re-play it.

See, that's a big part of the problem: you're insulting people. You call other people whiners and such just because they happen to dislike something you like. I'm not trying to be offensive or anything, but the reason you've been banned from TSSZ, and the reason you were often neg-repped here, is because there's a big problem with the way you post. Among other things, you often act as if liking the Sonic games makes you better than other people. You claim you want to respect other people's opinions, but then you say things such as what I quoted above, which is not respectful at all. And that's why people become angry at you. Nobody will have a problem if you just state that you like something. But when you imply that liking that thing makes you better than the people who don't like it, you're crossing the line.

Honestly, I'm not much of a Shadow fan, either, I'm just trying to think of ways to make him a bit more tolerable if Sega decided to use him again. If the plot of the Sonic series were up to me, Shadow would have stayed dead in SA2, and never come back. Besides that, Metal Sonic is a much cooler evil Sonic, anyway. But, hopefully you won't mind me thinking out loud... Personally, I'm seeing Shadow as kind of a dark reflection of Colors Sonic. While Shadow would still be cocky, smooth, and fully aware of just how good he actually is, (You can't tell me he's not cocky, what with that "I'm the COOLEST!" thing from SA2) he needs to be evil. Really, really evil. I dunno what kind of motivations he'd have, but I'd imagine a lot of them would fall under killing/humilating Sonic. He doesn't want the truth to his past, forgiveness from Maria, or anything like that. He just wants the world to burn. I'd imagine he'd still make a lot of jokes like Sonic would, although they'd be less silly/corny and more actually threatening. Think... sort of the Duke Nukem to Sonic's Spider-Man, only without the movie references or swearing in them. Again! I'm not fond of Shadow. If it were me, I'd remove him entirely. I'm just figuring out ideas to make him more tolerable IF Sega used him again, so feel free to tell me if my ideas are totally stupid. :V ...While we're at it, am I the only one who's a fan of Chronicle's Amy? I liked the whole passive-agressive 'Man Sonic Dexter is so HOT so much hotter than you'll EVER be >' thing. I know a lot of people will probably disagree, but I just appreciate any kind of change from 'SONIC I WILL NEVER LEAVE YOU I LOVE YOU SO MUCH SONIC SONIIIIIIC'. I'm almost expecting her to re-enact that one scene from Stephen King's Mystery where the crazed fan puts some guy's foot in stocks and breaks them with a big sledgehammer so he won't leave. She already HAS the hammer, even.

Difference between Mario fans and Sonic fans is that the former have pretty much NEVER been through the kind of depression that the Sonic series has been through. Not to mention Mario is THE Video game mascot, it's kinda reasonable for the standard for Mario games to be exceptionally high.

All of his characters are retools of existing Sonic characters. He'll NEVER be able to use them in any capacity without heavily altering the source material. Even then, only a fool would take his works as actual canon. Oh and also: Right from the latest Sonic Universe. That right there says: He might own the stories themselves, but the characters? You can have a game be accessible at lower levels and still be about skill at higher levels. Fighting games are something that's really hard to balance between the each crowd, but it is possible. An example of a fighting game that I think balances it well enough? BlazBlue. A game I think doesn't? Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is easily accessible and I'm not the type to say it has any depth whatsoever, but the scale is tipped severely towards the non-serious fighting game crowd which is a problem. X-Factor is a complete joke in its current form, simple as that. It's perfectly fine conceptually, but the laughable character balance of the game combined with how ridiculously powerful level 3 X-Factor is makes it completely absurd. Even more absurd when you take into consideration that the damage output of most of the cast with basic combos is off the charts already sans X-Factor. Did I mention the infinite loops that have been discovered using X-Factor? I don't even think I need to at this point. On the other hand, in a bit of a disagreement with your points, I think a game that tips the scale a little too much in favor of the serious crowd is Street Fighter IV. You make comments about the 'comeback mechanic' in the form Ultra Combos, implying that they're similar to X-Factor, and while they may be a bit similar in a vague sense.. Ultra combos really don't even compare to X-Factor because X-Factor is so much worse. My main issue with Street Fighter IV and why I think it should be balanced a bit more towards the non-serious crowd? One frame links. I can do them, but I seriously fucking hate them. People who can grasp the basic mechanics of a game like BlazBlue can still completely fail at Street Fighter IV despite it being an 'easy' game. All because of those stupid one frame links. At the most, a person who can't do one frame links can maybe poke, zone a bit (if their character is capable of doing that) and throw out an Ultra. Focus Attack Dash Cancelling is another. Combos are a core component of most traditional 2D fighting games raising the bar too high for them makes for some problems. BlazBlue doesn't have these 'comeback features'. Unless you count Break Burst which is limited to two times max during a single match and doesn't give you any sort of increased combo damage at all unless you use them offensively, which.. let me tell you, does not happen much at all in most cases. You have to be really gutsy blowing a Break Burst just to get the extra bit of damage in a combo off. The four button scheme is intuitive and there are a lot of subtle nuances put into the games system that makes it easier to learn just playing the game. It also still offers a lot of depth and advanced stuff that takes work to get down like Rapid Cancelling and Instant Blocking. I dunno man, just about the only fault I can find in BlazBlue is how small its roster is and that's something that will change with upcoming titles. It's still on its second game, technically. tl;dr Buy BlazBlue, goddamn it.

One of the most annoying things about your posts is that you say "X sucks because it has X in it" and you take your leave without writing anything constructive. You also seem to find it fit to argue about everything under the sun until you're blue in the face when really the matter isn't big at all. Mortal Kombat 2011 (PS3, Xbox 360)

I've been looking forward to this game ever since it was announced, honestly. I know Mortal Kombat has... seriously had a lot of up and downs in its past, and I can see how people would be a little jaded by its lack of quality in the PS2/XBOX era. MKvsDC WAS a big improvement, however, even with the lack of blood and really good fatalities. It just played smoother, and the controls were a lot more fluid, which really helped make it a better game. Definately grabbing this as soon as it comes out The demo, from what I heard, is like 9 weeks behind the full game, so here's hoping that the AI, damage scaling and infinites will be fixed by then. They've apparently got a bunch of MK tournament players testing for them, so I'm hopeful. Besides that, I want to see how that 'instant patch' system will work if they ever need to use it. Oh, here's a few things the topic is missing: Is that all the arenas in the game? Why yes it is! I bet there's spoilers in it! Jesus christ it's Kintaro get in the car ...Off topic, but is it me, or does the Sonic series really line up in quality with the Mortal Kombat games? I mean, think about it. You've got the 1st game, which is a good start, but has a few flaws that need to be fixed. Then you have your second and third games, which everyone agrees are basically the high point of the series. And then you have 4, which several of the characters are rehashed with new names and look different, but have the same moves, and plays like the previous games with new ideas that don't work. DOHOHOHO And then you've got your 3D games, which vary from 'eh' to 'just really damn lazy', with way, way too many characters and ideas that don't work. So, with this logic, I'm seeing MKvsDC as the Unleashed of the franchise, a new beginning with one idea that really shouldn't have been in there, and this, hopefully, will be the Colors.

I thought Merlina's thing was meant to be more of a metaphor than anything. You have two choices: First, life stops changing, but you don't lose what you love. There will be no more deaths, no more births, no new experiences, no new ideas...but this will also be a sheltered and stable life, where you don't have to worry about things ever changing (for the worse or for the better), and, most importantly, you will never lose anything you love. The other choice is that life changes, but it means things will be lost in time. The cycle of life continues; there are new experiences, new ideas, life and death and all that stuff. However, things can die. Life will change, for better or for worse, and you can do nothing but adapt and experience new life or fade away. In the particular case of this game, if life were to continue as it was the kingdom would fall and chaos would reign (at least temporarily). Sonic chose the latter. Therefore, some bullshit was thrown in saying that Merlina was using underworldly-powers to stop time and bad stuff would happen if she did so. Because Sonic's the protagonist, so EVERYTHING he does has to be unquestionably right. I remember there was a quote from the developers in Special Book, saying something like "Isn't it better for things to change and eventually end with time, rather than existing forever in stagnation?" The quote kinda scared me at the time because I was convinced they referring to the Sonic franchise.

I enjoyed the two Sonic Rush games and I'm looking forward to buying Sonic Colors whenever I pick up a Wii. And Sonic Riders is somewhat fun even though it's also pretty bad. I'm afraid that's as much positivity as you'll squeeze out of me, though. I really had to think this through. That's probably borderline masochistic. Positive? Okay. I recently played through Shadow the Hedgehog, and I loved it. Not my favorite, (Unleashed HD with colors following close behind.)but I enjoyed it as much as the Adventure games, which I happen to like quite a bit. Yeah yeah, the story throws logic out the window; I still like it. As for the gameplay, I think it's solid; it's a hybird of Sonic and mech shooting. As for the complaints about the auto-aim, never had problems with it, seriously. To Inferno: I'm preety sure Metroid fans do the same thing. I love Other M, but the fans at the Metroid board I go to almost completly hate it. :/

I think its important to remember that while Shadow has his Chaos Blast, Sonic that can do just at much, if not more, damage. The light speed attack. The light speed attack was at its best in Heroes. After performing Team Blast, Sonic could perform the move again for a few seconds independently. This move granted him amazing amounts of power. He could destroy those helmeted hammer bots in less than a second; something that no one else could come close to doing. I know Shadow was capable of the light speed attack in adventure 2, but Heroes takes it to a new level. Now I wager someone will say, "In order for Sonic to be capable of 'blast away' independently, he needs to be helped by two other characters before hand. Shadow does not need help with his Chaos Blast." To be honest, I really do not have an answer for that. So yes, Shadow is certainly more powerful than Sonic in some ways. But personally, I believe Sonic has a bit more power that some give him credit for. On another note, the relationship between Shadow and Sonic reminds me of Robin and Red-X from the Teen Titans cartoon. Robin is good guy; Red-x is anti-hero. Red-x has a ton more gadgets at his disposal than Robin, but Robin still finds a way to stay even or defeat his anti-hero doppleganger. Yeah yeah, Sonic got his rear kicked along with the Diablon in Shadow's game, but that was only for the game's plot, (and possibly Shadow using the Emeralds to enhance his abilities?)

While I definently agree with the 1-frame-combos bit, the main thing I've hated about SFIV is that they keep trying to design a 6-button gameplay scheme around a controller that has only 4 face buttons. Every. Single. Time. Surely they must have realized that using triggers and bumpers for heavies and ultras is extremely awkward to the point of silliness by now. Yeah I know, that's more of a game design flaw than a difficulty curve, but I figure it's gotta be mentioned since fixing that would be a bit more welcome to newbies too.
  34. 1 point
I understand that. But you basically explained my problem with that point. Most, and arguably all, of your typical heavy hitter kids shows are entirely merchandise driven from conception to execution, and they have been since the late 80s. There are exceptions, of course, but not ones that typically lasted on TV very long. This is why shows get canceled even in the face of have high ratings and critical acclaim.

Meh, might as well post my views on the game because...well, I feel like it. I'll be looking at both the Wii and DS version as I own both, so yay. Also bear in mind that I'm writing at 2am, so if something is confusing, this may be the cause. Wii first: To emphasise this early on, Sonic Colours Wii is NOT a bad game. Gameplay-wise, it's a solid game with intuitive, good controls. The plot is also nice for a game like this, being simple and mostly light-hearted. My kind of plot! Please bear in mind that if the later parts come off as really negative, it's just because I'm far more consise on what I don't like than what I do like. I'm fickle like that. :3 First bone of contention; The writing. Oh deary me. As you may have read before, and guessed now, I wasn't such a fan of the writing for Colours. Now, this has zip to do with being light-hearted. In fact, being light-hearted is what I adore. What I do not, however, is just how forced some of the conversations came off. In a nutshell, Sonic was slightly too overbearingly cocky for my liking, Tails was way too snarky for my liking, and...I'm not sure how to put this, but the plot seemed to progress in such a choppy format that I never got to bond with Yacker, ever, and he's the main new character in this! I'm going to go on a limb and suggest that the first two points are partially fuelled by character whiplash from the last games to this one. Still, toning it down a little would have probably warmed me up to it better. And I did enjoy the conversations between Eggman, Orbot and Cubot. I guess I'm just not so big on American humour...no idea how the last point could be addressed. Speaking of which; Second bone of contention; The level design. Going try to keep the next couple of points short and sweet. The level structure was fine and worked, but the level design just seemed so drab and dull. Yes, what basically amounted to a giant epic theme park in space was drab, even Sweet Mountain. I honestly could not begin to tell you why specifically, but I can say with my hand on heart that I thought that Unleashed's levels had more charm and whimsy to them. Asteroid Coaster would be an exception though, that had an exciting level design. 8-7 is narrowly still the better coaster, but there's room in my heart for two dragon skeletons. Third bone of contention; The music. Fits in with the above quite well, the music wasn't as catchy or memorable as I might have hoped either. Certainly nothing I'd want to put on my MP3 player. Level music like Tropical Resort may be aesthetically pleasant, kinda, but Bingo Highway makes my adrenaline run high. The boss music for the ships may be quite actiony, but the Unleashed night boss music makes me want to dance to the awesome! Fourth bone of contention; The replayability. Poor, poor Colours. Of all the Sonic games I've played, this is the most recent good (in my opinion, bearing in mind that this opinion really liked SatBK) Sonic game in a while that has given me no reason to play it again. To play through the levels on a whim? Not worth it, really. To get all the S ranks? I'm not a person who plays for ranks. To get Super Sonic? *has to stifle laughter* Ah, yeah, I don't think I've mentioned that I don't like Super Sonic recently, have I? Super forms in general too, that's why I don't collect their merchandise. All it's doing now is sitting in my CD box amongst countless other games, and there are many in there I'd rather go back to. So, my overall score on this, based on no averages, with a FULL 10 POINT SCALE (No 6-10 like the reviewers, I'll use every point at my disposal if I think a game deserves it)? 6.5. It's good, better than average, but there's quite a few personal complaints I have with it that stop it from going into the higher tiers. Now, how does the DS version compare to the Wii version with its bones? Quite well, actually. 2nd and 3rd bones; Are pretty much the same as the Wii version, given that they're directly based off it. The shake-up with the Planet Wisp boss was a welcome challenge though, and I'll be damned if the Void Wisp music isn't some of the best remix snippets I've heard for a good while. Also, the level structure was far better, presenting the shortened acts of the Wii version as optional missions that don't make the game feel like it's dragging. First bone thrown out the window; The writing. Definitely YMMV territory here. The DS followed the same basic plot as the Wii version (aside from the final bit), but most of the Sonic/Tails conversations were stripped of the jokes and made into more typical straight dialogue. And by God, does it make things so much better. Sonic and Tails feel much more in-character this time, not with forced humour and snark. Yacker still gets the shaft; maybe I was just born to not connect with him? I probably wouldn't be so positive about the last bit if there wasn't anything to fill the gap left...and that's where the missions come in and make the gap overflow. These interactions are great on the whole (Let's just look over Amy, for now...), and some of them are just absolute gold. They allow Sonic and Tails to get humour back in without going strikingly different, and also add zaniness to the other cast members. If you've seen my post on character personalities, you know that I hold Sonic's unnerving on Planet Wisp in especially high regard, because it's just played so damn well. Fourth bone thrown out of the window; The replayability. Unlike the Wii version, I've got all the rings in the DS version, and have some very nice art to show it and look at in my leisure. That there is some extra replayabilty. I also like to go back and watch events, try to do more missions to unlock more interaction goodness, and...just play it. When I'm bored, and have been Whited out, I'll just get it out, and whip through some stages for the hell of it. And that's nice. Overall score for this on a full 10-point scale? 7.5/10. A solid gaming core again, but with a few alterations here and there that make me love it more. So, that only took...50 minutes. ...Huh.

Damn, of all the years for Sega to NOT have a new game leaked why did it have to be this one?
