You know what is extremely common and easy for the moderation staff to grasp? You treating people who disagree with whatever dumb take you've decided to pretend you can support like they are too fucking stupid to form sentences. It's so easy to grasp that we've even had members express that they stop being comfortable posting in threads they were active in once you start posting in them. So you know what? This is your last warning on this nonsense. Argue the point and not the man, or don't post at all. Those are your two choices from now on when you come back, in any thread you post in; or we'll make it for you.

"Carrey's Eggman is surprisingly faithful to the original design visually, but don't expect any good characterization beyond Carrey's usual wackiness that he plays in nearly every movie." - We know that isn't the case AT ALL regarding his appearance though. He looks nothing like Eggman. The classic look was wedged in at the end, rumour has it because of a test screening reaction? "I know some basic plot stuff and little bits of script and even pre-vis stuff I've seen and that's it." - Then by this point, we've seen more of the movie than he has. By the looks of things, he was probably a runner or someone on set who got to see a bit of storyboard (where Eggman was drawn in the classic style from what we've seen elsewhere) and a plot outline, possibly some raw footage, and is basing it on that. The one interesting bit is the redesign. Where as I don't think it was planned, I don't think they were confident in it either (how could you be??! Haha) Hence keeping it hidden for so long and promptly announcing a redesign. The studio probably knew it was on the cards. Overall, thanks for the link. You're right, I didn't read it properly first time. Apologies. I still call mostly bullshit on it. We've seen more than he had and I think, hidious design aside, it looks okay.

I think that's a very general thing. My understanding of the conversation prior was about mandates and supposedly how they direct the comic, and while that is keeping things On Brand™, I didn't see what your post had to do with Wraith's point that Sonic--as a character--just isn't on top of a situation all the time. He was talking about the character being flawed and how it works fine within the context of the narrative. Your post read like a tangent complaining about Sega mismanaging the series as a whole (e.g. referencing the movie and well as saying the brand is being left behind on certain trends). I'm willing to admit I misunderstood the conversation before I commented if it was meant to tie together with the mandates However, that doesn't mean I have to let remarks like this slide: Now I'd like for you to pinpoint where I said any of these things or you can stop condescending to me. I've been responding to the words you actually wrote--like I always do and even admitted I misunderstood something you did--so I expect the same courtesy. And try to do it without throwing my moderator badge in my face. If you have an issue with me in that capacity, you're more than welcome to make a complaint to the admins. The only thing I suggested you stop doing is an annoying end comment that read like some of your other condescending comments disregarding people's arguments like you've done here or here.

You know I kind of miss the unique animations from the Stadium games prior to Gen 6, mostly because of how much personality they gave them. I'm not a big fan of Golbat but I'm a sucker for its dumb swaying animation like its trying to be Dracula or something. Now? It just flies. That's it. Its not as interesting as its previous 3D models.

Sonic Mania - Mirage Saloon (26% complete) Huge progress today! I've been working on it for about 16 hours straight, with a tiny break here and there. Intro is complete. I've added so many instruments. I've tweaked the harmonica as planned, and added a piano like as well as acoustic guitars and trumpets. And a percussion instrument known as a quijad. It makes that kinda rattlesnake sound. Perfect for something western. Mixed up the drums a little bit too from the usual. It's really coming together. I'm using a lot of jazz chords with this one. It's so cool because the original is already very jazzy, innovation is crucial. I'm gonna have to study this song a little more in order to move on. That and I think I'm done for the day. I've accomplished a lot, and I'm very proud. At this rate this song should only take around three weeks maybe less. Assuming my real world schedule isn't too harsh.

So there's a neat story about these two OCs. You see, these OCs were created by a Venezuelan girl. She was going through a rough time, so her friend asked Mr. Yardley if he could put the OCs in an official comic. We even have names and species. Now, as you can see, Yardley had to alter the design of the echidna to make her a more ambiguous species, since those are NOT echidna ears and Knuckles is still the last echidna, according to SEGA. Still a heartwarming story nonetheless. Also, a female character that doesn't wear pants/dress/lower garments? B L A S P H E M Y (jk)

I never got why the "Sonic must win" "mandate" is such a big issue. And like most of the mandates, it's been exaggerated by fans for years. He can lose, there just has to be the promise that the good guys will eventually triumph, as shown in Eggman Empire and constantly throughout the Mecha Sally/King Naugus arc. Like what else do you want? If Sonic suffered Eggman Empire-tier defeats constantly it would lose its impact, and the next step would be, what, Sonic dying? Ain't happening. He's a funny animal adventure hero for kids. He can struggle, he can suffer setbacks, but he'll always win in the end because he's Sonic the Hedgehog.

Another Western dev has gotten their hands on the Kunio-kun IP (after 2017's River City Ransom: Underground), this time by Shantae/Mighty Switch Force creators WayForward. You'll be playing as the girlfriends of Kunio and Riki, Misako and Ryoko, as they attempt to rescue their boyfriends from the nefarious organization known as "the cops." I haven't played much Kunio-kun aside from the first game on NES and Underground, but I was sold even before the trailer dropped today. Delinquent girls, great graphics, and a theme song by Actual IRL Shantae (or as her friends know her, Cristina Vee). Nice to see some competition to Streets of Rage 4!

Thats a heck of a blanket assumption there. Like wow. Even if that is a dude, your going to need more behind your reasoning than that. yikes. Plausible Deniability. It is an echidna, but if anyone "asks" then it isn't. Best of both worlds for this situation I guess.

I don't care, I'm still excited for this. This may be the only opportunity we have to see Sonic on the big screen. I'm going to totally geek out come February. It is kinda funny how angry the internet has gotten over this though. It's a kids movie for pete's sake. If it sucks, it sucks. Big deal. Not like it would be the first bad movie geared towards children.

Thank you! To elaborate though, I wasn't trying to say Sonic shouldn't have light hearted moments. Ultimately, the series did its best when the creators were able to balance the more light-hearted and more serious tones of the series, and got the most criticism when it ried too hard to swing towards an extreme towards either direction. Basically? People want things they can take seriously enough without it feeling too pretentious. Also, I'd argue Sonic's image and the portrayal of the series is a lot more important than you think. Platforming isn't as popular anymore. Trying to rely heavily/exclusively on an unpopular genre, for the amount of money they charge upfront aren't going to help the franchise survive. They want to market to kids, but SEGA doesn't have a viable market plan to reel them in on Sonic's standard gameplay alone. Kids post recession aren't going to blow $50-$60 for a 20 hr game, when they have cheaper Steam options, micro-transactions, or AAA games they can choose from. YES Sonic Mania sold well, but that was because it didn't sell for nearly as much as a standard title. It was a classic 2D game, half the levels were extensions of older levels, and that meant costs to produce the game were a lot lower than an average Sonic game; allowing them to sell it at a low price. A standard Sonic game isn't going to thrive on those tactics. Sonic can't AFFORD to rely soley on platforming gameplay. He's not even part of a popular genre anymore. And to make matters worse, his games keep flopping. To survive, Sonic needs to reach out and utilize what other avenues of entertainment can keep him relevant, but are also feasible for him. But what about Mario, you ask? PARENTS introduced their kids to Mario. He is the mascot of a viable console company, has different IPs to keep the console brand going, and unlike SEGA, Nintendo thought ahead, and pre-emptively placed Mario in different genres of gameplay outside of the standard platformer so that he could remain relevant even in the potential event platforming failed. And the kicker? Some of Mario's other genres sold better than the actual platformers he was based on. Meanwhile, SEGA alienated their fans which reduced their capacity to sell to the newer generation. Those SatAM fans who left years ago? They matter. The adventure fans who left because they disliked the direction of the series? They matter. Because when they grew up, would have been the ones who introduced to the future generations the franchise. SEGA should have tried harder to integrate these fans as opposed to completely disregarding them for 'their vision', which never sold well in the first place. If anything, I think the over-emphasis on gameplay is actually hurting Sonic, because its making him too defined by a genre that doesn't sell, and its creating characters, who don't have long term direction for remaining relevant in the series beyond 1-2 games.

I was okay with the boost formula in Unleashed, but for me, my biggest qualm became more apparent with subsequent games: every level is basically the same thing in a different setting: same spike traps, same balloons, same springs, same grind rails, slightly different level layout. I think Sonic Lost World's gameplay was subpar at best, but I would argue it had more imagination put into it than all the boost games combined. Throughout all the years of 3D Sonic, I know there's a winning formula in there somewhere, but whether a Sonic game ever actually finds it...

    IDW's Sonic the Hedgehog

While I enjoyed the issue just like the last one, the comic has always felt very formulaic for something with only 18 issues so far. I love seeing the cast handle this dark storyline though, but this one could have taken a bigger risk by infecting Sonic handling his own infection and being unable to help already feels old to me since it was the exact same as in #17, but Gemerl raised a good point about him being dangerous. Now we're getting two more parts of this with Team Dark, and I'm going to be really annoyed if there's no pay-off and Sonic won't end up turning by the end of it. I'm sure the comic can survive one mini-arc with him as an antagonist. The three-parter starting with Tails will hopefully shake things up, I'd like to see the story used to its full potential rather than "just fighting off Zombots". For example, have Charmy infiltrate the shuttle and force Vector and Espio to face and capture him. This causes panic to break out among the survivors while Amy, Rouge(?) and Cream try to keep things in control. If you wanna get Knuckles involved, have them evacuate everyone to Angel Island and give us a reason why he supposedly worked as Resistance leader. Heck, let Eggman fall to the virus and have Orbot and Cubot lead Tails to the source of it. With this ending at either #23 or #24, I doubt there will be much place for any of it.

I have to be honest here, I read the issue and I didn't notice the repeated formula at all. Zombots attack, Eggman has his villainous attitude, Sonic rescues villagers, but actually he doesn't here, even more zombots are infected, and obviously new friends are introduced. So this comic can't have the basics plotlines? It seems like people get tired of everything these days, I'd like to know how they'd write it, for example I would introduce more conflicts on how to deal with this crisis, raise the stakes, but in this particular arc I feel like they are high already, plus there is tension, drama, emotion. It's pretty good to me. The one thing I didn't like is how Gemerl was handled, really a dull robot character with no personality, just to create a conflict with Sonic, although it was an interesting conflict, because Gemerl sees them as robots to destroy (which is something Omega would do as well, but still), while Sonic and Cream see the zombots as victims. Oh, David Mariotte said the map will be a regular thing throughout the season arc. Cool!

It's always frustrating to see promising projects, fandub or fanfic alike appear to have everything needed to succeed, only for it to kinda fizzle out and nothing ever comes of it. And it's almost always because the people in charge didn't use their time effectively or tried to do too many projects, or they just take so long due to numerous circumstances that everyone involved loses interested and it ends up being a waiting game to see if anything happens, or if it ends up completely forgotten. Do any of you guys have or know of any fandubs or fanfics that you can say ended up just like that?

Issue #41 - ...and one shall save him! A very significant thing happens in this issue. Yet, despite that, there's surprisingly little to say about it. The biggest thing to talk about here is the fact that the art sucks. It sucks really bad. So this issue is mainly a retread of what happened way back when they tried to save Princess Sally's dad from the Zone of Silence. Except they actually manage to save her dad this time. Also, plumpy skunk boy is back. Why? Literally just so he and Sonic can bicker at each other. I seriously don't have a clue why Geoffrey is here aside from giving Sonic someone to bitch at. The way this issue begins is very strange. It looks and feels as though they cycled through three artists in the span of 3 pages. Both Eggman and Sonic look wildly different from page to page at the start. Sonic starts off looking fairly good before crashing into Robotnik's lair. All of a sudden he looks terrible and Robotnik looks... wickedly detailed to the point of almost feeling gross. However, the next two pages he suddenly shifts back to a more traditional look. (THE REST OF MY REVIEW GOT DELETED BY ACCIDENT SO I'M JUST GOING TO SUMMARIZE THINGS AS BEST I CAN) They go into the Zone of Silence and rescue the King. The end. The main take away from the issue that the art is really fucking bad. Here's Sonic with flesh colored legs crashing into a super sized Sally. I'm kind of pissed that what I typed got erased BUT the issue wasn't really much to speak of anyway.

I was once really looking forward to the game, but now that's changed. They've... kinda gone and promoted a feeling about apathy for just about every aspect of the game. A Pokemon? Well, don't get too attached, it might not appear in a new game for a while (Shinx, a fairly liked Pokemon, has shown up in only one regional Pokedex; Sinnoh, its debut region). That one mechanic? Those have been dropping like flies since before this mess. That battle gimmick? It's gonna be thrown out for something else in the next generation. Like, what's sacred now? If the Pokemon aren't, what's next? How long until certain less popular Pokemon (Simisear) are retired? It might be unthinkable, but so was this. What was the point of all that poetic waxing about how people love their Pokemon and want to take them to the new generation? The strongest system Pokemon has ever been on, and this is how they plan to kick off Pokemon's main series console debut? Not only does it not inspire confidence, it's a hype killer when you realize a lot of the Pokemon you've taken time to capture and raise are going to be fragmented across multiple games at best.

    IDW's Sonic the Hedgehog

Brief thoughts on the issue: In general though, I'm really kind of getting bored of the formula. I'm sad to say that after the shock value of the premise is over, it feels like we're repeating the same formula over again. Sonic runs to a village under attack, protects citizens from Zombots, helps friend of the month deal with invasion, and help evacuate the people away, Sonic talks about having to leave villagers to fend for themselves while he burns off the virus again, and by the end, someone gets infected. We had it with the Chaotix, we had it with Cream this issue, and next issue seems to be setting up Team Dark next. I mean, I guess you can have the excitement of wondering who'll be turned next, but I think because this issue lacks the shock value of it reveals the formula that much easier because there's no shock value of "ballsy move" behind it. Literally all that happened this issue in terms of Sonic's "friends" getting infected was and to that point, I found it almost kind of laughable that it was those two being turned that caused him to get serious about it, because they haven't had a lot of interactions that would make that reaction make sense. It feels like it was meant to be someone else getting turned and then it was changed last second. From here on, Ian really needs to start breaking up the formula, because once the shock value dies down, it becomes really apparent quickly where the cracks is in the story arc. It's a different premise from Year 1 and yet the formula is basically the exact same with one new added thing - which is someone being turned at the end. It's a weak as hell story device to rely on shock value to mask the repetitive formula. Honestly, I'd kind of like if Sonic ended up turned and Sonic's remaining friends had to go up against him to cure the virus. Make like a small task force with Tails, Knuckles, Amy, etc and force them to fight Sonic without allowing him to touch them. At the very least, I just want a break from this formula, and it doesn't seem like we'll get it til that solicited Tails issue.

Not gonna work. SEGA opened pandora's box years ago by making/allowing more serious storylines. Whether we're talking from SatAM/Archie or SA1 and 2, now that they've introduced that to their fans, its going to be very difficult going back. Look no further than people's criticisms towards Colors, Lost World and even Boom. Once you set those kinds of expectations towards your fanbase its very difficult to just 'whoopsie!' and take it back. And that I think, is essentially what makes up a large part of the difference between Sonic and Mario. Mario never gave people higher expectations in regards to the story. It came out during a day and age where story was more a non-factor, and never made the pretense that its focus was on the gameplay and little else. Sonic from almost his very introduction was more story and character driven. It doesn't matter if you think the other universes or previous games are canon or not, they nonetheless helped set a standard for a tone that resonates with people to this day. SEGA can't just run from that. Furthermore, Sonic's image was never initially marketted as a timeless character. He was designed to be the 'cooler' alternative to Mario, and whats defined as 'cool' changes throughout the decades. Which would be fine, but that also means Sonic himself has to adapt with the times. Sonic can't BE a timeless hero in those circumstances, especially not in a story-driven medium. He has to grow and change to some degree, something that SEGA doesn't understand, because they keep trying to make him the equivalent of some timeless, Mickey Mouse-eque character who isn't in the same situation. Their biggest mistake was attempting to shove a single storyline on the series, when they could have just had multiple ones that came and went as the times changed. Similarly to the older universes, he could have had character development, but it wouldn't have been relevant to any story beyond the series it was told in.

You might be right. And if thats true, I really do feel bad for Ian. Your dealing with older execs that don't understand the current literary culture, They want Sonic to be this Mickey Mouse-esque character thats timeless when that doesn't sell anymore. People WANT character development. They WANT to see growth. Why is the average customer going to bother with Sonic when they can find this kind of thing elsewhere? Their biggest mistake was trying to making one consolidated story -- and with of all things the Japanese version, which didn't even sell in their own country. If they simply allowed other universes to exist like they did in the 90s with more freedom, mandates could still exist but Sonic could develop in different ways because no one series was representative of the others, and could end whenever, with others working simultaneously. There wouldn't be the pressure to conform and be 'timeless' like there is now. Disney can afford to do these things with Mickey because: 1) They have a lot of different IPs that sell well unlike SEGA, so they don't need to rely as much on their mascot the way they used to. 2) He's aimed at small children and the pricetags for his merchandise is fairly cheap most of the time. Not so with SEGA and their Sonic games which are more than half $100 just to buy and play. When your asking for that kind of money, the quality has to be a lot better to encourage people to buy. And SEGA hasn't been keeping up with the times.
