The Lara-Su Chronicles and Ken Penders topic - READ PAGE 164, POST 4096

Not exactly news, but an Archie Sonic liveblogger I follow on tumblr wrote a pretty great piece on the grander issues with Penders's writing and characterization, his relation to other parts of the comic and the series as a whole. I knew I never liked a lot of his comics as a kid, but I never quite knew why or what was making me read something else instead of continuing with Sonic's comics.

Which former character voices do you miss the most?

I do wish to add that despite really liking Keith's Vector voice, I do wholeheartedly agree that Mark Biagi was excellent and hit the highest peak of vocal performances for the guy. The delivery of his lines were a special kind of something that hasn't been replicated and its a shame that 4kids Vector permiates so much more of Vector's vocal appearances than his. Recently, I've grown to have a ton more respect for the original voice actors because they were tasked with making the characters their own and, in a lot of ways, setting the stage for how they were to sound down the line. Ryan wasn't Sonic's first voice but he was definitely the origin of a voice for Sonic's modern take and how he'd be viewed going forward. Scott Drier and David Humphrey were standouts but I do want John St. John to get a little recognition for still having the best Omega voice as well.

  13. Surprise surprise; most game reviewers don't care about all of the nonsense that the Pokemon fandom has been shouting for months. It's almost like it was a pointless endeavor fueled by adults with far too much investment in a franchise they played when they were children.

Honestly, from that trailer, the movie still doesn't exactly look...good, but I honestly might watch it anyway, because it doesn't look unwatchably bad. As for the design, it's pretty good I guess - about as good as it can be considering what they're going for. This movie really, really shouldn't have been live action with a semi-realistic Sonic to begin with, but since that's the angle they unfortunately chose, this Sonic design is decent considering those constraints.

  15. So far I actually prefer Sonic's personality from the movie over most versions of modern Sonic's personality which I haven't been much of a fan. The personality reminds me roughly just little of Sonic from AOSTH or Sonic SatAM and to a less degree OVA Movie Sonic, which are all my favorite Sonic personalities, besides the classic games if you wanna count those too.

    Worst period for Sonic?

From like 2012 until now, personally speaking. There are a lot of Sonic games that just don't even Ignite my curiosity or hold me long enough to keep playing. I was too young to care when the franchise went into a critical tailspin and still put in dozens of hours on games like Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic and the Secret Rings. I can't imagine doing that for Lost World and Forces both because my tastes in games have changed a lot since then and I don't even find them as ambitious or interesting as games like Shadow anyway.

The Lara-Su Chronicles and Ken Penders topic - READ PAGE 164, POST 4096

Just want to point out that despite working on so many projects, Ian Flynn just launched the first five pages of Drogune, his own newly created comic series done alongside Adam Bryce Thomas. Ian announced he was doing this in 2017, just two years ago, and again, despite all the other comics he's writing for, movies he's watching, games he's playing, and podcasting he's doing, has still managed to get more of the official product out than Ken has for his thing. This is something Ken literally sued people in the court of law over. It was no doubt a heavy contribution to the end of the Archie books and this thread itself started in 2014. MARCH of 2014 to be exact, which means we were barely into the new year. Sonic Boom had just been announced as a thing that was going to exist merely a month before. Now we live in a time where its long since ended. This is unacceptable. There's no excuse for so little progress being made on a project that you fought in the court of law to obtain the rights to make. Its been more than half a decade at this point. My ugly, unintentional comedy story about a gross, human proportioned echinda whose actually an alien in a string bikini is long since overdue, Ken.

  30. Weird how something as obscure as Teacher’s Pet got a full-on theatrical movie, while more popular shows like Kim Possible and Phineas and Ferb were stuck with TV movies. Not that Teacher’s Pet was bad, mind you, but it’s not too surprising why the film bombed in hindsight.

That's sort of in line with how the writers wanted to interpret Sonic: a juvenile teen acting out, same with that infamous "legs" teaser poster with the graffiti. I don't particularly... care for that sort of personality for him, but I wonder if they'll give him a sort of character arc where he matures by the end of the film. That'd be an instance where I could accept him behaving like that.

  37. Hi all! I'm new here, but I've been lurking for quite some time. With the Movie's new trailer and all though, I just had to join up here. I have so much to say! First things first, the design. I don't know about everyone else, but this just became one of my all-time favorite Sonic designs. You have the proportions, the cartoony style, the expressiveness, the realism, everything balanced to blend perfectly into a live action movie! The realistic details mix with the colorful cartoony visage we all know to form one of the best animated video game to live action movie adaptions I've ever seen, right up there with Detective Pikachu in my book. Next we have the trailer itself. The first trailer didn't "feel" like a Sonic movie at all, the slow, suspenseful tone, the slow music, the offbeat humor, none of it matched the character and franchise the movie was based off of. It was literally too slow and lacked the energy you'd expect fom Sonic the Hedgehog. Now, we get the new trailer and it's a COMPLETE 180! It's super upbeat, fast paced and full of energy and visual wonder that makes my inner child squeal in joy! The view of Mobius and Green Hill Zone just took my breath away when I first saw the trailer! The tone is also a lot more lighthearted and fun, Sonic's personality is portrayed perfectly with great writing and delivery (Kudos to Ben Schwartz for another great Sonic portrayal to add to the list!), he gets along great with the cop dude and his unfamiliar surroundings exactly like you'd expect from Sonic himself, and he even has a serious heroic movie when he stares down his nemesis and resolutely states that he'll use his power to protect his friends. That's some Sonic Adventure 2 level of writing right there! Jim Carrey's Robotnik was the only highlight of the original trailer and the only good part IMO, and now in the new trailer, that goodness is cranked up to mind blowing awesomeness. I must say that if anyone could ever portray Eggman in live action, it would be Mike Pollock or Jim Carrey. Jim's signature hamming just really puts Robotnik's character into a character that hardly looks like him! He's like a living cartoon that lives up to the video game Robotnik, and we haven't even seem him go full Eggman yet! That little moment of him rocking out in his secret base was absolute ART! That girly scream when he saw Sonic just made me bust out laughing! I can say that even with everything else cranked up to 11 in improvements, Robotnik is still gonna be one of the film's biggest highlights, with Sonic himself now being the other major highlight, as it should have been in the first place. Finally, I'd like to express my hearfelt gratitude towards Jeff Fowler, Paramount and the development team of the Sonic movie. You've made this Genesis Era Sonic Fan cry tears of joy from seeing how much LOVE was put into his character, and having you guys hear our voices. Not a lot of filmmakers nowadays take criticism to heart whether it's genuine or not and even fewer filmmakers ever acknowledge their mistakes and fix them like you did. You've given me hope for the future and inspired me that anything can be fixed if you do it for the ones you care about. And I know that you care about us all for you to give us this great gift. You guys are heroes. Overall, the trailer was one of the best moments in my life so far and gave me hope that no matter what, Sonic will live on and continue through ups and downs ("how are you not dead? I have no idea!", even they know what's up) and will always have a bright future even through hiccups, because if something like Old Movie Sonic can become this masterpiece, who knows what the future holds? I don't know, but here's hoping we all enjoy it together!

    Worst period for Sonic?

I mean, I suppose quality and reception wise, the period during the mid to late 2000s was the worst. They kept pumping out game after game after game with very little polish in a desperate attempt to stay relevant during a period where worrying about that made little sense. In a way, they ushered in this self-fulfilling prophecy where they ended up tanking their own reputation. After Sonic Rush and Shadow the Hedgehog (games only a month apart) came out in 2005, Sonic Riders, Sonic 06, Sonic Genesis, and Sonic Rivals all came out the same year with trailers for Rivals, a game that took place after 06, coming out during a time where trailers for 06 AND Secret Rings were coming out as well. Than Secret Rings hit in early 2007 with the sequel to Rush, the first Mario and Sonic Olympics, and the sequel to Rivals at the end of the year. Some good games came out of that period but looking it over it really is ri-damn-diculous just how many fucking games they were making. The fact that they split up the team working on 06 just to make a stand-alone title for the Wii just shows how strange the sweat-shop, assembly line mentality they had during that period was. If we're talking a more personal note, the period we're in right now is the worst for me. The old broken attempts to be epic and ambitious feel like something I can at least admire and respect. Nowadays it mostly just feels like they're okay with just settling on the bare minimum, bargain basement qualifications for being a video game. It's doubly frustrating considering I feel they ironed out a lot of the issues they used to have back then. If some of those old games were made with the polish some of the newer ones have we'd be in a very different position right now. They went too far in the other direction. Now nothing's ambitious, everything's the same, the world is either stale or the same locations over and over... I want them to strike that perfect balance so badly.

Pokémon Spoilers Topic (Current Info Leaks: Sword & Shield)

Well here's the final checklist of returning Pokémon... Yeah, I really have to question how this selection process was made but whatever. Though there aren't nearly as many Kanto mons as I was expecting; only about a third of those are either returning or have updated forms. Some exclusions are especially disappointing/surprising, like the Nido line or Salamence, Pokémon that feel right for the region. I think the weirdest inclusions for me are the Alolan mons, with few exceptions (SM had a pitifully small number of new mons) since many of them were practically fully designed for the region and had backstories that tied them into the region that seeing them outside of the context is strange. Sure, makes sense marketing-wise, but Jangmo-O? Passimian? Silvally? Though in defense of the last one, it's possible Gladion shows up and gives you the last remaining Null the Aether Foundation had. Meh, I said it before, I don't really like this, but it is what it is. Disappointing as this is, at least a lot of the newer mons look great. Not enough to make me buy the game when it still has the stink of Pokémon Home clinging to it, but my curiosity is at least satisfied with what we haven't seen officially yet. Here's hoping Impidimp will be good to go in whatever the next game is in a year because I'd really like to use it.
