"They just seemed like obvious characters necessary to the growth & development of Sonic." This is an odd bit of historical revisionism when they were explicitly not a part of Sonic's growth or development in the comics he wrote. Even as much as I liked Jules and Bernie (I mean, in general I've always been a sucker for the old stuff whether it was good or not), most of the time I never got the impression they mattered any more than the sea of other characters he's made--at least not when he handled them. That's seems true for most of his contributions, as it often feels like he was good at selling you on the idea but then you actually see what he does with it and it's either boring at best or extremely questionable and out of touch at worst.

It becomes doubly hilarious when you recall that his statement about being the first to give Sonic parents is very, very, very much not true- those manga tie-ins released in Japan gave Sonic parents and a little sister, and the Sega of America Sonic Bible explicitly gave him a living mother and a dead father and SEVERAL sisters. Granted, the odds of him knowing about this are zero to nil, but given his usual response to people pointing out how he's not really the trailblazer he sees himself as, he's gonna keep claiming this even if the evidence overwhelming demonstrates how untrue his claims to be. With Penders and the various family members he makes, one gets the feeling that a lot of the time it's done so that a character can be regarded as significant by deign of being a relative without actually having to actually DO much of anything. Under Penders, Jules and Bernie are significant purely because as parents to Sonic they become significant by default, even as he basically ignored them after introducing them as alive... which in a way worked in their favor given what happens when he DOES focus on parents (or at least fathers. Lookin' at you, Locke, Max). That being said, yeah, he's talking out of his ass with this- he sure as hell did not give a fig about Jules and Bernie after buggering off to Echidna Land, nor did he even attempt to use them in any meaningful way at all, let alone as a means of developing Sonic. Guy's living in la-la-land if he honestly believes this and isn't simply engaging in self-aggrandizement.

Ever had this stance with some characters where you're just not really impressed with them in terms of handling and yet you can't stop doing stuff with them? At least you might get a few bunnies this Easter.

It's karma. Ken's own attempt to take away what we loved in Archie...and for a time, while he left behind a decent legacy that while flawed resulted in a LOT of characters people loved like Geoffrey St. John and Lara-Su(not the abomination he CALLS Lara-Su now...), he had to get in the mindset that characters that were Sega's were his to profit off of. The basis for his characters are based off Sega's and are not entirely original in their concept. What Ben Hurst did with SatAM was more original, creative and left a legacy Ken will never be able to say he had. Ben's show got two seasons on ABC. Ken's book got cut off at 32 issues(which today would be a respectable run considering most Marvel books don't even last a year to be fair). Now, the Sonic movie has come to fruition and people are loving it and he must be angry inside that it's not HIS name involved with the project. He wanted the name recognition, the prestige and he never got it. All he has is the "Lara-Su Chronicles" which he keeps teasing and trickling down but is taking his time with. You know what Ken? There's a man named Fred Perry who has written and drawn his own series called Gold Digger. It's a personal favorite of mine. Not only that, he MADE his own movie and it's on DVD. It took him awhile but he got it done and manages to do his own monthly series on a regular basis. Last time I looked, he's at over 200+ in his own series and he's been at it for awhile(for reference, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gold_Digger_(comics).) What does Ken have under his own belt? Last time I looked, some teaser art and nothing released. Ken will never be the creative he thinks he is because he doesn't have the drive that people like Ben Hurst and Fred Perry do. It's sad, people would've been more into his work if he hadn't done this entire thing with Archie but on the other hand, I am thankful...it let us see who he is really is.

Honestly, since they've already established that the Sonic movie universe has loads of habitable planets similar to the Sonic X universe, they may as well go full Metarex saga with the next couple movies and take us to all kinds of weird places and worlds resembling levels from the series as a whole.

How was this film not complete trash? I can’t believe it. I actually loved it. All the fan-references were neat, characters weren’t actually annoying, there seems to be a nice little backstory for Sonic (unfortunately not explored a lot here) and the visuals were decent to boot as well. That opening on Green Hill with Hyper Potions gave me tingles, and the chase scene with the tribe of echidnas had me very interested in lore for potential sequels. I adored Movie Sonic in this - he’s portrayed quite differently to “Game Sonic” - but that’s ok. He has the attitude of a hyperkinetic little kid... But it actually makes sense within the root and themes of the story why he acts like he does. Ben pulls the character off easily and for me he was more endearing than annoying. Carrey as Eggman wasn’t half bad either - a more comical performance for sure - but I look forward to seeing where he could take his character in the future. In fact the supporting cast weren’t terrible either, not even those that had little to do. I dunno, I honestly went in expecting a 3/10 movie and was pleasantly surprised. To rate it as Sonic Fan - I would say this is a fanboy 9/10.. But if I come away and look at it more level headed this is easily a 7.5/10 for me with plenty of room for improvement. It was great fun, and an excellent video game adaption which respects the source material enough whilst crafting its own universe of ideas (again, surprising considering that original trailer backlash). I actually dragged my mate along with me to this (and he’s not even a fan of Sonic) and even he enjoyed this, a kids movie! We went for a laugh, and were ready for cringe... but were actually quite shocked by the quality and effort put in and laughed at the jokes that landed - the audience atmosphere was packed and positive making it all the better. Now I really want “Movie Sonic” to become its own thing now - I hope a sequel gets green lit as I’m game. @CaptainRobo Those scenes were in the movie. They simply retooled the Sonic Animations and Audio from different parts of the film and spliced them into the trailer in different areas. For example the Adult Sonic in Green hill animation was actually copy pasted from the desert area in the actual cut. Similarly the “I have no idea” bit after the explosion happens but matches Sonic to better capacity in the movie - for the trailer they just copied pasted the dance animation from when he got his sneakers into the scene. (I always thought it felt a little off in the trailer... now I know why).

Can't remember when I started doing it but whenever I play Sonic 2 and open an animal capsule I always have to jump on the button again at the right time to make it look as if it's what causes the results to show up on screen.

The Sonic movie has an absurdly basic, run-of-the-mill plot that gets elevated by the leads so much that the movie is actually really fun and enjoyable It can't break away from the boringness of the basic structure all the time, but I think it draws out some of the best stuff it could out of it.
  15. 2 points
Saw it last night. It's ok. I think the best summary I can give is if some exec made a, by the books, road-trip/ fish out of water screenplay with some basic action set pieces tossed in. But then, in a bit of a twist, gave that to someone who actually knew a bit about the series for like 10 minutes of edits before they started shooting. There's a number of neat little nods and easter eggs thrown in but the base plot is still, for the most part, run of the mill. There were some decent jokes, and a couple that didn't land. Ben kept scenes lively as Sonic. Didn't expect to like Tom as much as I ended up doing (Maddie was a decent character too for, like, the three real scenes she gets). Carry is good fun as Eggman (you can really tell that he was actually having fun in the role). So, at least I can't really complain about the casting. The actually story however... yeah, it's unsurprisingly what keeps this movie from going any higher than average for me. It's not even that it's bad, just boring in a number of areas and predictable af. Hell, the trailers basically did a good job summarizing the movie. There were a number of sections that really didn't add much at all to the plot, some comedy attempts that really didn't work at all (like seriously, some of the lines and gags are pretty awful at times), and was just overall unexciting. One thing that some may find off putting is that Sonic... really doesn't follow his standard character format at all. His kid side is played way up. Usually, at least from my understanding of the character from his many various interpretations, he's always had this more laid back attitude about everything. Here, he's bouncing off the walls and is never really chill at all. I mean, I can't say that it didn't work here for the most part but it is something I noticed. Though, one small thing I did actually like about this was that whenever Sonic took a rather hefty blow, it would usually result in him losing his little sack of rings which would spill all over the place which is a nice (and somewhat unexpected) bit of loyalty to the source material. Also loved how the final battle mimics the games quite a bit but I won't go into too much detail there. One more thing I'll add here is that I probably need to somewhat retract one of my earlier opinions of the movie when we got the new model. I originally said that it probably wouldn't help the movie itself out much at all. Though, I admittedly somewhat underestimated how much the simple act of seeing a well animated Sonic would do in terms of my enjoyment of the movie. That older model probably would've turned this post from a solid ok to a pretty negative bit. Seriously, it might be shallow, but I can't help it. The effort that went into how Sonic emotes here is probably the one thing from this movie that I'd actually want to see continued in the mainline. Though... But yeah, overall I doubt actually seeing this movie is going to change anyone's already formed opinions on it. It's not the train wreck we saw coming up til that second trailer but it's not great either. Hits a lot of the same beats as Detective Pikachu if I'm being honest (though I feel that movie was more competent with the source material overall). Honestly, it's just good to see that the series won't be completely failing on two entertainment fronts cause honestly, even back when the idea of this movie was in the hands of Sony, it looked to be going there faster than Sonic himself.

Saw it last night. I'm quite happy with this. Movie did what I expected but there were a lot of nice Easter eggs. Enjoyed Carrey and Schwartz a lot. Love the post-ending hints of course. I never expected a great movie but I think this was definitely on par with the pikachu movie and if the box office holds up it will get a sequel. Would see again for sure. Please, nobody go in looking for it to be some 1:1 dramatic origin story. It's a hollywood production for the mass market with lots of nice touches for fans. That's it.

Another day, another instance of Penders demonstrating what a bitter, envious old fool he really is. The earth turns, the sun rises, and Penders... does this crap, with the regularity of the seasons themselves. Something tells me he's on this particular tear right now thanks to the fact that after so much time spent denying it's existence, the Sonic movie is in fact here, and with it comes the utter eclipsing of his own failed attempt to make a Sonic movie real. I should really be a lot more angry right now, but honestly this entire display is as pathetic as it is disgusting.

A political "thriller" that he originally meant to premiere as a TV series on a major network almost a decade ago, until he realized no networks wanted it. Eventually he re-edited into a movie, which I presume is going to be an online-only premiere. There's a preview "episode" that he put up on Youtube back in 2011, featuring my personal favourite line of 'This is how teens really speak, right?' dialogue ever, "Dream on, moon unit."

This movie has been slowly driving me to insanity ever since December 2018 when they teased it. I wish I could ignore it but it's popping up everywhere I go, on every Discord server, Tweet, TV, videos, etc. so I just gave up on trying to ignore and decided to hate on it instead. The fact that people are liking makes it even worse for me. lol This is false, everything from a success to a failure will affect the games. We've seen it happen time and time again, and Classic Sonic is proof of that.

So then, you really don't have anything to prove your claim, considering how your initial comment was based off of someone mentioning the RT scores. Also, I get the feeling that if the RT scores were bad , you'd be singing a far different tune. And? Your original claim was that if critics gave it downright negative reviews that fans would eat it up. Yet, given that there's both a positive schism in both critical and audience reception ----because people tend to forget that Rotten Tomatoes is used to calculate the percentage of how many people actually had positive reviews to say and isn't some score average--- it completely flies in the face of your ideal. I mean, at that point, you're grasping at straws. Wow. Someone hasn't been keeping up with the DCEU after Suicide Squad. Especially if you consider Wonder Woman, Shazam's performance, and especially the billion dollar box office winner that was Aquaman as "performing" worse. For crying in the bucket, Aquaman is their biggest money maker yet.

Well the movie is what I expected: Not really good. It's not atrocious, but it's really nothing worthy. Carrey was fine enough I guess accepting that his Eggman was really more about Jim getting to chew the scenery than anything otherwise. Didn't care much about Tom and he turned out how I expected him to be ("random White dude who gets to be Sonic's most important friend"). And the movie's Sonic is just Ezra Miller crossed with Deadpool dipped in Current Sonic, so if you don't care much for how he's handled in the games then I don't see how the movie fixes him. With that posted, I find it curious that apparently the standard for somewhere like IGN saying the movie's "capturing the spirit of the franchise and being true to the source material" is that occasionally Sonic curls into a ball or picks up rings regardless of tonal differences or characterizations or including Two-Worlds. I suspect what it comes down to is these review outlets don't care about video games much and just might be soft on the movie. Let alone Sonic, which if they know about it they fall into the "ugh everything in Sonic outside of 1-2 games or his memes or SatAM is horribad" (even IGN, no especially IGN). So they're just rating it as a fine "family film" where Jim Carrey and Sonic do zany things. Remember Ace Ventura guys? Remember that movie? Remember those memes? You might it sound it like DC's superhero films haven't been performing worse and worse from Batman vs. Superman up accounting for production costs. Especially Suicide Squad. Only Joker has been a smash hit, and it's radically different from other cape films anyway.

This was definitely an interesting project for sure, with a tempo change, style change, and having to time the music out to what was going on in the comic (a term known as "Mickey-Mousing"). I feel like it turned out ok, we kinda had to rush production since deadlines were coming too close, so there wasn't a whole lot of time to edit.
