    IDW's Sonic the Hedgehog

Nobody's talking about anyone "banging", dude. Sexual preference, despite the name, is not just about sex. I mean, how is that not exactly a reason for it to push back against homophobia and show characters of various sexualities just living their lives openly and honestly? I mean obviously you'd have the usual group of maladjusted losers complaining about "politics" and "diversity" and "SJWs" and so on but, y'know, fuck 'em. What the hell kind of argument even is this. This one instance of two characters' relationship isn't romantic, therefore none of them can be? Nonsense.

I liked some of these encounters but overall I would rather the final boss of a Sonic game both be a character that has more involvement with the story and tie more into the game's main mechanics. Only Chaos hit both of those marks. The spectacle of the giant Kaiju fight is cool though. I wouldn't mind seeing that again.

You have to bear in mind that Sally herself was not the same character from the previous continuity, never mind she was a character that Sega had divested themselves from as soon as the DiC show ended. It's not really a retcon when it's a completely different continuity and characterization especially when they were given a memo that she and Sonic as a pair were off-limits. It's less pushing an agenda than it is taking it to a logical step and developing a character that effectively became a blank slate.

I don't usually share the pics I'm completely unhappy with, but I figured I'd post this one to get some feedback for a change. Strangely, it's been getting likes and no feedback so I figured I'd throw it here as well. I hope everyone enjoys now that it's here 😊

Don't forget 2005 was the year we saw Professor Gerald and Black Doom produce a child together. Truly, Shadow the Hedgehog was a game ahead of its time. Seriously though, it's 2020; that we still have to go through the whole "Think of the children!" song and dance when it comes to portraying LGBT characters in media is just depressing.

...Do you really think that Sonic has a lower age range than children's cartoons and goddamn disney sitcoms, which have had gay characters before? This argument feels like it was dragged out of 2005 and forgot to check what year it was in.

It is just as possible to be openly bisexual without fucking anyone as it is to be openly straight without fucking anyone. Nobody looks at Amy's crush on Sonic and thinks it's the first step in turning the series into furry pornography; why would a character being bisexual be any different. And that should change, because gay, bi, and trans kids read comic books and play video games just the same as straight ones do and deserve heroes they can see themselves in just as much. Okay your insistence on constantly equating any kind of LGBT content with sex or "trashy romance novels" is starting to make this seem like you actually do have a problem with the subject itself. Then what does it have to do with completely different characters in completely different relationships? It's completely irrelevant. I mean if you're a coward, sure. Things don't change by just sitting around waiting for it; what progress has been made has come from pushing forward regardless of what the pearl-clutchers think.

It's always been weird that not being straight is inherently more sexual than being straight when it has no reason to be, not gonna lie. It's a very weird slippery slope thing people go down for no reason.

Unfortunately, there are parents that aren't chill about it, such as cases where their child gets outed as LGBT against their (the child's) will and they end up physically assaulting and/or disowning them. But I say fuck em.

IDW Sonic already put a character's sexual preference front-and-center in the second issue. If this children's comic can have Amy swooning hard over Sonic it can handle a character being bi.

I've been saying that Sonic Team's "back to basics" brand of pandering is just the team trying to sell budget cuts as something the people wanted. It's been over a decade since they started with that and the supposedly bloated Sonic Adventure is still the closest thing I can play to the classics.
  13. 2 points
It's also notable that, while there's no way to know how much a No Items-Sonic Only-Final Destination game that Sonic Team supposedly keeps making after repeated fan appeals is affected by how it also happens to allow them to more cynically just reuse the engine and mechanics and concepts dating to Unleashed without the elaborate 2+ year development cycle that Adventure and Adventure 2 and even STH'06 and Heroes and Unleashed all had, it sure is convenient for Sonic Team that it does. It always seemed pretty telling to me that even though it released straight to bargain bins and was completely overshadowed by Mania from day one, Sega was happy enough with the profits of Forces to deliberately note its success in investor reports.

I just don't see the point of these kinds of things. You mash together a bunch of different versions with radically different settings, events, casts, characterizations, etc...to what end? What's a completed timeline actually do for you? Can't give you new insight into the series, since you're changing things to make it all fit. No official works are going to follow it so it's not a guideline for understanding future works. I'm not a fan of having a bunch of different versions of a character/series either, but if they already exist, I think they should be kept separate. Let them each stand (or fall) on their own merits, let them be their own experiences and send their own messages.

I think that was a thing he already established with characters with a good chance of not coming back. It's a pretty safe discussion, or at least it should be. Homie gets harassed on Twitter about that and various other things. Back on point. Would love to be wrong, tangle is rad. But when you hear him talk about ships you can hear the burt-out-ed-ness. This is man who continues to bear the brunt of sonamy fans who think Amy's sole value is her sonic crush, and harass him about sonally and him hating amy despite how much more cool he made her. Whilst at the same time getting harassment from people who had sonamy because they think ian Flynn secretly hates all archie things. I can understand that guy not wanting to look at that bridge, let alone cross it. Hopefully she does

Because you're refusing to allow LGBT characters to be treated the same as straight/cis ones. Okay, so, Amy is inappropriate, since part of her character is her crush on Sonic, and that relates to sexuality and isn't about fighting Eggman? No? You accept Amy as an appropriate character in the series? Okay, then what reason is there not to allow a bisexual character in the series?

I think you’ll find that being gay or bi is very much normal, my friend. And nobody in children’s media would say “homosexual” or “bisexual” either. At the very least they’d just say “gay”. Or, ideally, they’d say nothing at all. A character will be depicted as being in a relationship (the kid-friendly depiction; hand-holding, cuddling, blushing, maybe kissing) with somebody who is the same gender, and nobody will question it. Nobody will say “HEY LOOK THOSE DUDES ARE GAY” at every given opportunity. They’ll just think nothing of it and move on. It really couldn’t be simpler.

You're certainly making an effort to keep it that way. You started out saying that you didn't think it was an appropriate subject for Sonic, now you're pivoting to some nebulous group of other people being the obstacle. You didn't actually make any kind of point about that. The existence of one story that doesn't involve a character's sexuality doesn't mean that there won't, can't, or shouldn't be other, completely unrelated stories that do involve a (potentially entirely different) character's sexuality.

its crazy how the main Egg Fleet ship is several times larger than the Egg Carrier yet never gets as much recognition. Guess thats an important lesson in how something is framed, given that the Egg Carrier was given lots of cutscene/ plot importance, while the Egg Fleet ship was just a stage/ boss arena/ backdrop so it felt smaller even though it was larger. This also extends to Colors in a sense, taking place on like five planets vs Unleashed which only took place on one, yet Colors still felt smaller despite that.

As Big Panda said, making a hetro character bi is more natural than flipping their preference to the complete opposite. ...you know love isn't just about sex, right? it can be emotional/romantic too. Unless the kids are very small, they should know/have some form of crush and love. There's multiple RL stories where a kid asks a gay adult "why don't you have a [partner of the opposite gender]?" and they totally understand the answer, "well I like [same gender]". Like hetro romance, it should be treated as natural and not put too much focus on the orientation/preference itself. It will feel forced if they take the time to point out a man is dating another man and how it's 'different', with the other characters reacting "wait, you're gay!?" "wait, what doesn that mean??"...unless it's important to the story. It won't if the man casually introduce his bf and no one makes a fuss. They can have Sally mention she was close with a male character in the past, while ""dating"" a girl (cuddling, holding hands, whatever people associate with love) in the current time. They can have her blushing or flirting with both male and female characters. Sure it can be interpreted differently by people, and parents can make up excuess for their kids, but that's enough for the writer to say she's bi. I mean adult readers immediately theorized Tangle was lesbian because she was excited at Blaze, same with Whisper for becoming besties with Tangle.

They honestly should have stuck with the personality he had in Episode Shadow; he was way more over the top and full of himself there. The hammier he is, the more entertaining I would have liked to watch him.

Variety is a good thing, but only when it's handled well. The reason the series has such a terrible reputation as a unfocused mess is because that's exactly what the games have been, because Sega feel like they need to please every facet of the fanbase. The worst folly a creator can do is to try and please everyone, because at the end of the day you'll end up pleasing nobody. Basically, the series needs to find a way of adding variety without just tossing out everything that came before. You CAN add new elements and iconography without removing the ones that came before. It's why Sonic Adventure was able to work, because it feels like both an evolution of Sonic, but still has numerous callbacks to the previous games. Lost World is NOT an inherently bad game, and actually has a few great ideas worth exploring for instance, but it retained almost nothing from it's predecessors Colors or Generations. The safest thing right now though probably is to do a Sonic Adventure remake, if only just to show people that they can fix one of their older games. Otherwise, a new game and new direction that knows what it wants would be better.

I really like this idea! I was thinking about how to make Pachamac fit and was assuming there could be some time travel going on — Sonic might return to his world and find that it's actually been much longer than it seemed because time passes differently on Earth — and so the Knuckles Clan that attacked him are long extinct, and Robotnik has had time to assume control of Sonic's planet after he found his way off of the mushroom world. And then Knuckles has his usual origin of Sonic 3, being the first to encounter Robotnik and believing Sonic is coming for his Emeralds, and Sonic recognizing Knuckles as a member of the tribe who killed Longclaw. Together they learn about what happened to the Pachamac Clan in flashbacks through Tikal/the Master Emerald... and then the ending is a combination of Sonic Adventure/Sonic 3K. Instead of releasing Chaos from the Master Emerald, Robotnik's plan is to steal the Master Emerald and return to Earth to rule with its power. Sonic goes Super with the Chaos Emeralds that Knuckles provides him, and stops Robotnik and returns the Master Emerald. ... But I have to say I like your version better, I think those changes are smart. I like the idea of Knuckles not being the literal last of the Echidnas, and him being a rebel and outcast is a stronger and more active choice for him. I like the way that it also reincorporates the Echidnas into present-day Knuckles, like the old Archie series but obviously much better.

    My Hero Academia

Season 5 has been confirmed today. No news on a release date though, I'd wager around April-May of 2021, if we go by the pattern of Season 2 to Season 3. This is obviously speculation on my part, but if I were to take a guess on what will be covered - it will likely cover the Joint Training arc for Part 1 - which is based on Class 1-A and Class 1-B training together in a series of capture events, with Shinso from the Sports Festival arc also joining in to try earn a place in the Hero Course. This arc also involves Deku discovering more about One for All, although I won't discuss any further. The second part of the season will likely be what many call one of the best arcs - My Villain Academia. This arc focuses on the backstories of the League of Villains members as they go up against the Meta Liberation Force, and will go further into Togura's attempts to prove himself as All for One's successor.

This is an admireable effort, and I can see you put a lot of effort into this. But it just doesn’t work. There are way too many things across different media that contradict each other to the point that it’s just impossible to reconcile. Don’t get me wrong, I fully understand what exactly you’re trying to do here. I know nothing about Batman, but I am part of another fandom which has a very similar outlook on the definition of “canon”. The only way you could potentially implement the “everything is canon” mindset is if you focus on ONLY the games and nothing else.

It's fine to end with a giant monster sometimes, but for a time the games were really overusing it, and not to any particularly strong end (except the spectacle of it, I guess). Part of the problem I have with them ties back to another problem I have with a lot of 3D Sonic stories, where it feels like the main characters have wandered in on someone else's story. You always deal with the final boss partially if not entirely through Sonic, but they've almost never taken the time to make it mean anything to him; it's just time for the monster to be knocked down and he's strong/the main character so of course he's there. Even Metal Overlord doesn't really avoid this, because they only pay lip service to his rivalry with Sonic and they otherwise discarded any connection in favor of him being a generic supervillain-turned-monster. He may as well have been an entirely new villain aside from the fanservice. A standard Eggman-in-a-robot final boss, even if the game's not saying anything new with it, is at least playing out their longstanding rivalry. Colors had a simple story but its final boss still feels more narratively satisfying to me because there's at least that connection (plus tying in the "save the animals/wisps" aspect, even if they could've done more with it) than something like Solaris or Dark Gaia where it's just...hey, a big bad monster, gotta beat it up and save the world. Although Forces showed even an Eggman final boss can be a dud without some amount of setup and finesse. And I guess the storybook games made "a giant monster" matter to Sonic, so the problem's not really inherent to either option. There's also the issue that they've done a terrible job of testing you on the game's actual mechanics, but that's really more a Super Sonic problem than anything. And arguably a "Sonic boss fights in general" kind of thing.

I actually largely agree with @Kuzu and apologise if I've been rude! I also think that Sonic games are best when they just go for a focus and stick with it. Maybe it's just me, but I really get the impression that the team working on Generations had a real passion for revisiting Sonic's past. They celebrated the entire series and did so with some real pizzazz. I think it's a crying shame that Hiroshi Miyamoto hasn't directed a Sonic game since, because I have confidence that he would do a good job. I really love Mania as everyone does, but I still have a large soft spot for Generations. I think it's the best Sonic game since Sonic and Knuckles when it came out and while the Classic Sonic physics were flawed for sure, I still think he was fun and had great levels to run through.

The answer is at once complicated and simple. The complicated version is as follows- that character that utilizes Anthony Mackie's likeness is Commander Mykhal Taelor, a new character who is supposedly meant to provide a 'human' viewpoint to the series. One noteworthy trait of Taelor is that he has undergone SEVERAL design revisions, and this is the only time in which Penders has decided to stick with something- Almost looks like a timeline of drug addiction, doesn't it? For the record, yes, that Mackie-alike head was directly recycled and edited from an art piece Penders did earlier. In as much as tracing the IMDB picture of Anthony Mackie counts as 'art'. Now then, as to why MACKIE, specifically? The reason Penders gives is thus- Yeah. Draw your own conclusions from that one. I'm just gonna say "Yikes". More to the point though? Penders is a major league fanboy of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and tends to gush about it, and the decision to have Taelor look like Mackie came about as a result of that. And since Penders cannot for the life of him leave his interests out of his work, even work that is meant to be utterly original, he decided that Taelor Shall Look Like Mackie. This is a guy who randomly decided to include Ersatz versions of Scully and Mulder in the Image Sonic Crossover and even thanks Chris Carter in that book, after all. Now, all that was the complicated version. The simple version? Penders is a lazy hack with an incessant need to reference his interests, with a side order of having deeply unrealistic expectations.

Okay. What counts as a direct reference? Because at this point they've referenced every modern game aside from colors at least once. They're not doing the whole "author's note: buy the games" thing Archie postboot did, but they still call back to things a lot.

I'm not sure what the point in this thread is. Consumers are allowed to make demands and they're also allowed to change their mind about things if they want. They're also allowed to exaggerate or even be misguided on certain subjects. It's not especially unique to Sonic fandom nor hurtful to the franchise on its own. Its not the fandom's job to crack 3D Sonic. You should just be glad people are willing to put their free time in to try.

Yes? They went from Sonic 06 straight to a new title, and while I hate Sonic Unleashed it was still clear that a lot more love for the series went into that game than 06; and here we're dealing with Forces, which is more aggressively mediocre than it is an absolute Sonic doomsday event. If we required Sonic Team to make a remake after every bad or even just 'painfully mediocre' game, this series would be about 75% comprised of remakes by now. I'd rather they just analyse what was good about Adventure, and then apply that to something new and skip the remake stage.

Yeah, basically what they already said. Espio's quirky ninja or Chameleon based abilities are where his appeal lives and dies at. I get where you're coming from, I think his ninja motif holds him back more than anything else, he would have so much more potential really if he got more rounded character moments than just being a strong silent stereotype. But the dude has: a huge tongue, invisibility, can stick to surfaces Spider-Man style, and has his own spinning technique. Beyond being ridged and underused, what's not to love?
