    Sonic 30th predictions

Most of the other character's levels are simply parts of Sonic's level with a small extra rooms here and there. Tails' levels are just chunks of Sonic's levels with Flight rings put here and there. Most of Knuckles' stages are just parts of Sonic levels with emerald shards hidden somewhere. Amy actually has a sizable amount of unique layouts, but she only has 3 levels, and even those re-use huge chunks of other levels. Gamma, again, has Sonic's exact levels most of the time, with more enemies and some additional speedboosters placed here and there to accomodate for his speed differences. Big also often just takes tiny chunks of levels, or has uniquely created areas, but even those are ridiculously small because all you do is fish in them. C'mon, I adore Sonic Adventure, it's my favorite Sonic game, but let's not act like Sega and Sonic Team cranked out completely unique levels for each character. They put thought and effort to change the areas to make them a little unique for each character, but it's really not some gigantic act like some make it out to be. We might as well argue that Sonic Mania has 72 unique levels just because you can play each Act with 3 characters and they all have small areas only they can reach.

Sonic Adventure's various campaigns reuse more assets from one another that it's actually not as ambitious an undertaking as it seems. It's an impressive technical showcase but it was also a game that made a lot of compromises to be finished inside of a year. If you were to remake Sonic's campaign from scratch you'd end up with most of the assets you need for the other parts.

What's your preferred Sonic 3 Soundtrack?

I've been listening to Sonic 3's prototype music a lot since the ROM originally got released, and that's something I don't really do with the classic trilogy's OSTs otherwise- not least because they've been burned into my brain at this point. I never really gave the proto soundtrack a second thought when all we had was the PC collection's MIDIs to work off, mainly for two reasons: Obviously nobody at the time knew that they had anything to do with Sonic 3's development, and it was reasonable to assume that the changed music was composed for the collection by a different music team The format and arrangements. MIDI in general isn't great to listen to- at least not via the default instruments on a modern OS- but many of the MIDIs themselves in the S&K Collection in my opinion can't even be salvaged by means of a good VST or soundfont. Some sound fine enough, but a lot of them seem to suffer from bum notes, weird tempos or additional notes/riffs that clash with the mood conveyed in the 16-bit versions. (it's been speculated that the MIDIs were probably sourced from the game's original demotapes and that the Mega Drive game "fixed" these problems rather than the other way around, but I had no way of knowing that back then) As for my thoughts on the tracks themselves, now that we know what they were meant to sound like? Well I really do like proto Carnival Night- it's much more melodic than the final (which is the main reason why I prefer Sonic CD's JP OST over NA) and completely changes the atmosphere of the level from creepy and sleazy to upbeat and fun. It seems to suggest that Carnival Night's development history played out like Casino Night's in reverse. I also do like that act 1 and 2 arrangements of proto-CNZ are actually different to each other. I'm not a huge fan of prototype Ice Cap however. It's basically just two chords repeated and sounds like a slower version of Sonic 3's invincibility music which I already hate. I remember saying years ago that much of Sonic 4's soundtrack sounds incomplete in the sense that a good number of tracks just sound like the first few bars of what should be a longer tune, and proto-ICZ has the same problem. It doesn't help that act 2 is basically exactly the same except for a few different instruments and added percussion. Final ICZ is still repetitive, but it feels like there's more going on. Launch base is an interesting one. I think the final music fits better as a final stage, with the uneasy atmosphere created by the strings and ethnic percussion indicating that something big is about to happen. Prototype act 1 sort of works as a triumphant prelude to the game's climax (akin to Wing Fortress) but act 2 doesn't sound like a final level at all. It's a great track that won't leave my head, but it sounds far more like something you'd hear in a 2-player level than anything else. The context of the game's story also leaves me torn regarding the credits music. The prototype credits theme is an absolute bop, and sounds just like something you'd hear in J League Pro Striker 2 (Which is a soundtrack I'm quite partial to), but the final credits theme works much better in the game's context, where you've claimed a small victory but the battle's not over yet. I don't really have a preference regarding the competition menu themes. I like the final track for sounding a bit different, but the prototype tune sounds like a third act of Hydrocity, which is by no means a bad thing. And I guess I ought to mention track 2E, which I quite like. I'm not convinced that it was intended to be Super Sonic's theme like everyone seems to say, though. Based on its position in the sound test I'm inclined to think it was written for the competition results screen, before it was replaced with the No Way theme. In conclusion I think that the final game's soundtrack works better in the context of the game's story (particularly towards the end), but at the moment I think I prefer the prototype music to just listen to.

    Sonic 30th predictions

You need to really consider the time frame Sonic Adventure came out in as well; by the standards of 1999, the things it did were considered extremely ambitious because those were the things in demand at the time: More playable characters, more gameplay modes, more ambitious storylines, etc etc and Sonic Adventure was specifically designed to be the Killer App of the Dreamcast. It's been two decades since then, technology has marched on and what Sonic Adventure did is honestly pretty small scale by today's standards for gaming. So it really wouldn't cost as many resources as people think, especially with the way they've been cutting corners in recent years with their games.

    Sonic 30th predictions

I’m going to be optimistic and say that if Sonic Team absolutely has to shoehorn in Classic Sonic, they’d make it a skin for getting all the emblems and possibly make 2D versions of Emerald Coast, Speed Highway etc... for DLC. That said, while I don’t think a hypothetical SA1 remake would strip half of its content, add wisps etc.. I think they would add additions from SA2 (bounce bracelet, non-spammy spindash, improved drill claw, better light speed dash) which could be for better or worse depending on who you ask. Honestly though I’d rather a game with inspiration from SA1 than a SA1 remake.

Sonic as part of a larger trend

Yeah! You can definitely see it there -- that's almost literally "What if Mario but Bart Simpson?" And there's interviews with Ohshima and other Sega/Sonic Team designers who straight up are like, yeah, that was the directive; the corporate bosses wanted a Poochie. Sonic was engineered from conception to be trendy and popular in that specific moment of time as their mascot. Sega wasn't looking any further ahead beyond the immediate future or the next shareholder meeting. It's interesting how Sonic has endured for decades. There's little doubt in my mind that, like, 80% of the ongoing appeal is simply the character design. Sonic's design is clearly a mix of existing elements (especially "1930s cartoons + Dragon Ball") but Ohshima & the artists ended up forming something familiar but unique that captured a timeless feel, and I think that helps a lot ... even when Sega tries to remove the timelessness by adding, say, Soap shoes to his design.

I’m gonna keep my reply short because others have already said what I wanted. I completely disagree with the op and the general notion that Sonic somehow changed from “super bad@$$” to cutesy comedy. I keep seeing this brought up. I don’t see it and never have. Sonic himself fits both edgy and cute tones. He’s always been a combination of traits. Nobody has just one and every game doesn’t need to be super grim. Let Sonic be cool, serious, funny, cute or lighthearted. Something Ive mentioned on other sites is...having no voice acting in the Genesis era probably skews some people’s view of him compared to now that’s he’s able to show a full blown personality.

    Sonic 30th predictions

I've been thinking a lot about the concept of an Adventure remake and the more and more I think about it, I don't like it. If they do remake Sonic Adventure I do expect a lot of big changes to come alongside it. I think the story would mostly be the same, but the gameplay would be very very different. For example, I think they would certainly cut playable characters such as Big, but because of his new, memey marketable status he'd be a major NPC. Hell, they would probably try to find a way to make Classic Sonic part of the story and shoehorn in his own playable campaign too. Modern Sonic would have boost versions of his levels (think Speed Highway from Generations) and wisps would probably be there too, because why not? The only playable characters I see happening are Modern Sonic, Classic Sonic, and maybe Shadow or the avatar. I don't want it to be this way but it's the only realistic routes I see them taking. If we ever did get Tails, maybe they could take the way Sonic controlled in Lost World and retool it for him, because damn, he really needs to go through that story arc again. I mean, it'd be a good opportunity for it but they probably wouldn't do it. The story would probably be more or less the same, but I also think it would be a retread of the original story but still placed in the timeline after Forces, like the Phantom Ruby making it all possible to revisit everything. Character personalities would match that of their current iterations—Sonic would still be making jokes about Eggman's mustache, and he would probably constantly make a bunch of water jokes at Chaos too. If Tails isn't playable he'd probably follow one of the Sonics around and give advice, almost like Omochao. I'd expect the rest of the characters to take a backseat cheerleading kind of role just like before. The humans would probably be replaced with other anthropomorphic animals and the modern boost levels would probably be like a minute and a half long. Even if they did try to do a 1:1 remake from the ground up without making major changes to the gameplay I don't think it would be as good as the original, like at all. I honestly don't have a lot of faith in the prospect either way unfortunately. I'd rather they do something new. I really hate that I don't have faith in this, and I would love to be proven wrong. EDIT: After sitting on this for a couple hours, I just wanted to say that this is more like a collection of worst-case scenarios in the realm of possibility I see happening. I don't expect it to be 1:1 with everything here. Basically I expect at least just one questionable decision.

    Sonic 30th predictions

I think we will have a new Adventure game soon not because Sega or Sonic's social media is hinting but because it makes sense. We are currently in a nostalgia wave from the late 90s and early 2000s. All "nostalgia waves" came right after the game, movie or whatever piece of art completes 20 years of its release. The original Sonic Adventure is 21 years old in the US, the Adventure 2 is 19. The nostalgia wave are all in the entertainment business, we have thousands of remakes of classic Disney animations, we have the return of beloved franchises such as Star Wars, the Marvel movies rely on the nostalgia of the original comics stories, too. In the game's market, we had Crash, Spyro, Resident Evil and Final Fantasy remakes, and it's just the begining. So, even if the next Sonic game weren't an Adventure remake or an Adventure related game, Sega's probably starting to develop something to surf in this trend, They're going to put Adventure fanservice in the new game for sure. But, unlike the Disney live action remakes, in my opinion the remakes of old games have more than nostalgia to rely on. They could really make the old experiences feel fresh because the originals have hardware and development limitations. For example, when Sonic Adventure was released, it was the very first Sonic 3D game. Sonic Team doesn't know what would work and what wouldn't. Takashi Iizuka also said in a past interview that the Perfect Chaos from Sonic Generations was how he wanted it to look in the original Dreamcast game but it couldn't due to hardware limitations. Sonic Adventure remake could have expanded level design, better directed cutscenes and voice acting, better presented story, better design Adventure fields. I could be amazing! It's also an opportunity to Sega to revisit the Adventure gameplay and see what they could use in the next games. We see that the boost formula isn't the way. It's fun but also consume too much resources and have some limitations that the Adventure's formulas doesn't.

    Realism in Sonic

I tend to feel those locations still have some toe dipped in the surreal nature of the old games. Let's take the OVA universe for example. It does have elements of the SA era games, it has anime humans, some more realistic backdrops and a relatively darker storyline. However it's all glued together in a very surreal core. The humans are anime-ish but still cartoony and anthro supporting characters do also exist besides just the main characters. The population is more diverse rather than contrasted by a handful of weird entities in an otherwise consistent normal human world. Also the scenery is more grounded but keeps a more surreal air to it, like Eggmanland/Robotropolis being this Scrap Brain like factory lair of Eggman's, which grounds him as a big entity of how this universe works. There's still a feeling that the OVA universe, while having its own liberties, is still built for Sonic and Eggman and the like, not that it shoehorned them in as aliens like Sonic X practically lampshades.

    Realism in Sonic

I think another reason Lost World doesn't sit well with people is that Sonic, Tails, and Eggman all still look exactly like they have since Unleashed. Whereas something like Wind Waker overhauls Link, Zelda, and Ganondorf's designs in a way that makes clear it's portraying the universe in a different art style, Lost World seemingly forces us to accept that the abstract and hyper-simplified Windy Hill, and Generations' much more grounded and detailed iteration of Green Hill, literally coexist exactly as they appear on-screen in their respective games. It's as if Wind Waker just straight-up recycled Link's model and textures from Majora's Mask with no changes. It's weird, to say the least.

The nature vs technology theme has definitely been there since the beginning. The Japanese manual for Sonic 2 outright says Eggman is responsible for the oil spill in Oil Ocean: Dr Eggman has spilled oil into the sea. You can't use your favored dash on slippery oil! Advance by making full use of slides, fans and gas cylinders! Even the original game shows Eggman polluted a section of the Labyrinth Zone in Scrap Brain Zone Act 3. The 8-bit version had the Chaos Emeralds remove all the air pollution caused by his factory in the good ending. The same thing happens in Sonic Rush with all the G.U.N robots in Huge Crisis, though they don't drop any Chaos Drives. I've always felt the same way. As a kid, who at the time had only Sonic Adventure 2: Battle and Sonic Mega Collection, I was really confused why Eggman's robots in Sonic Heroes didn't release any animals in them. By the time I finished the game I thought "Oh! Eggman's robots didn't have any animals in them because they aren't Eggman's robots. They're Metal Sonic's!". It made sense to me that a robot overlord wouldn't use inferior organics to build his empire...then 06 completely throws a wrench into things by having Eggman's robots powered by Chaos Drives. I guess he stole them from G.U.N? In Sonic Unleashed you can maybe headcannon it that Eggman is using Dark Gaia's energy to power his robots. While Sonic Team seamed to be forgetting this, Dimps seemed to at least remember Eggman uses animals to power his robots as Sonic Advance 1 & 2 featured them as normal. In Sonic Advance 3 Eggman uses normal rings, but there are still mini games where you can rescue animals from those capsule prisons and even the concept of badniks powered by flowers is used again. Sadly, Sonic Rush was the last Sonic game to use this concept again until Sonic 4 and Sonic Colors...nearly five years latter. They somehow both forgot and remembered this fact in Sonic Generations by only featuring robots with animals in them in optional missions. Sonic Lost World prominently brought this back, as did Sonic Mania, but then Sonic Forces completely forgot about this again. Maybe hand wave it away by saying Eggman used the Phantom Ruby to power his robots? I don't know why Sega is so inconsistent which this concept, if they simply don't want to use animals then I think they should at least use something, Knuckles Chaotix had Dark Rings, Sonic CD used flowers, etc. A zone idea I always had as a kid was instead of an animal poping out like normal, a Chao does instead and flies off. By the end of the Zone the boss battle would take place in a Chao Garden, complete with the Chao running away in fear. After you land seven hits on Eggman he starts charging an attack that you can't stop. Before Eggman can make his move, all the Chao gain their courage, come back and land the final blow on him. There's so many cool ideas you could play with this concept, I don't know why Sega doesn't seem interested in using it outside nostalgia. Sonic 3D Blast, the Adventure games, and Sonc Lost World are the only games to use this idea in different ways.

    Sonic Headcanons

This should be regular canon honestly. Here's another headcanon. The Tornado isn't exactly Sonic's plane, it's just a random propeller plane he came across when he was running around on Christmas Island one day. He asked his animal friends and looked around the place but found no owner for the mysterious plane. Being the impulsive adventurer he is, Sonic claimed the plane for himself and used it as his ticket off the quaint island in search of excitement. After flying to Westside Island on one of his adventures, he eventually met a certain fox who would become the Tornado's mechanic and new pilot. If they ever found the original owner, Sonic and Tails would be fine with giving the plane back (possibly with Tails rebuilding it in its original form too) since Tails can just build another one from scratch anyway.

Sonic is (supposed to be) cool

Terrifying. It all may have seemed serious as a kid, but no actually the Genesis games were all pretty silly. Not outright comedies, but still playful adventures about bopping silly robots to free little animals and stop a cartoon bad guy. They had their moments of tension and danger too, and Sonic is supposed to be cool, but saying it was always supposed to be serious and badass, and that ShtH of all things carries the series' original spirit better than Colors and LW, is fundamentally incorrect. We don't have to fall into the false dichotomy of "dumb stupid cartoon babby game" vs "big serious epic game for adults". Sonic was cool. Sonic was cute. Sonic was intense. Sonic was playful. Sonic existed within the range between the two extremes, even if we can't all agree on exactly where.

Sonic is (supposed to be) cool

The idea that Sonic must be overtly "cool" or that there was an "edgy spark to ignite the franchise" is perhaps the greatest success of the US marketing spin, because it's nigh bollocks with how much some people stress it now. Sonic has more attitude than Mario - he's got a smirk, he gets annoyed at the player for taking too long where Mario just takes a nap, and he's very cocky and arrogant. But to deny that there's any kind of room for pushing beyond that is just wrong. He's an adventurer, and a generous friend to the woodland critters around him; you cite the Adventure games in your post, as if they were the start of Sonic's personality. They weren't. Look at the above artwork, all from Sonic 1's manual; you've got a blend of Sonic's more cocky, attitude-driven side, but also a cuter, more curious side to him that's befitting of an adventurer. The same goes for Judy Totoya's soft-redesign of Sonic for Sonic 2. He looks genuinely cool in some of this art, but he's also got a bit of a cuter side too. The outright focus on Sonic being as cool as possible is almost pushing for a flanderisation of it a lot of the time. This isn't to say what Lost World does is any better, because good lord it isn't, but there's more to Sonic than being 'cool.' Sonic's battles against Eggman may not have been a joke, but they're not exactly War and Peace either; it reminds me of someone who one tried to convince me that Sonic 3 was 'edgy' (as a defence of SA2's plot) because it was a 'dark story of enslavement', just because you free animals from robots. Like, c'mon. It's like saying Mario is a dark, edgy story because the manual claims the brick blocks are transformed Toads.

I'm going to humor this thread; I don't get how having less characters necessarily enhances Sonic & Eggman's rivalry. They're the only characters in Sonic 4, and surprise, that game is still garbage. Sonic & Tails are the only characters who have really had focus, and Tails is so fucking useless that he may as well not even be there and surprise, the games are still trash. So...where is this idea that having less characters makes a story "more interesting" comes from?

Rose is far from a good person but it's disingenuous to trace her every action as negative. Rose gave the gems the gift of free will. Life and love and family.. She gave them Steven, who eventually dismantled the chokehold the Diamonds held on the galaxy. It's up to you to judge her worth. The show doesn't need to tell you how to feel about her. The truth isn't that she's bad, it's that she's complicated. The show dug into that more than enough for me. I was relieved that the cast was over it in future for the most part and living happily.

Sonic as part of a larger trend

Western marketing perhaps more blatantly spelled out that Eggman was a Republican guy who doesn't like the environment, but such things were present in Sonic from the beginning. I mean the very concept of animals being turned into robots is a pretty simple nature vs mechanization thing, and one need only look to Sonic CD's bad futures to see Sonic Team warning against unchecked industrialization and pollution. And just ask the man himself: “Dr Robotnik is a slightly radical representation of all humanity and the impact humanity is having on nature. In 1991, it was a very sensitive subject to talk about the environment and while I had my viewpoint, I did not speak of it. With Sonic, I was given an opportunity to express my views in a different way and did so, showing Robotnik using pollution and creating machinery which desecrates the environment and it is down to Sonic to change his ways.” -Yuji Naka, 2010 https://www.sonicstadium.org/2010/10/naka-sonic-created-with-environmental-themes/
