    So I was only recently convinced by a friend to make a topic for this, hence why it's so close to release. But as a member of this project's devteam, I'm excited to show it off to you guys: MaGMML: Episode Zero is a massive collaboration Mega Man fangame, made by the team behind the Make a Good Mega Man Level series. Taking the classic 8-bit formula and applying aspects of the X, Zero, and ZX series to it, Episode Zero is a fangame unlike any other. Set in between the first two MaGMML games, you play as Zero, Dr. Wily's ultimate creation...? He may look different from how we know him, but he's no less capable, armed with his trusty Z-Buster and Z-Saber, as well as the spreadshot Z-Burst and a myriad of elemental chips to augment his abilities. On his bizarre soul-searching journey, he'll run through over 60 different levels from over 40 creators, face off against over 80 unique bosses, and come into conflict with the mysterious Simulation Recon and Regulation Administration, or "SRARA". And if you're put off by Zero's... "avant garde" new look, you have the option of using his classic ponytailed appearance, or even a hood that makes you look mysterious! The game will be released on June 26, 2020 - three days from now! If any of you are interested and want to follow/discuss it, consider joining the official MaGMML Discord!     I've been milling about that Coco design, and I figured out what I don't like about it. It's the Sonic Riders arms, they don't look right and completely mess up her proportions making her look bottom heavy. For comparison, here's what I mean by Riders arms:

    Crash’s controls in N Sane wasn’t the issue, they were redefined and improved upon to make them consistently 1:1 with Warped. The problem is that the stage design of Crash 1 in particular wasn’t fixed to accommodate that, due to being a straight remaster of the original level layout. Namely the issue was collision found on enemies being rounded and circular, as opposed to being rectangular, ala Crash 1 on PS1. This is why levels like The High Road and Slippery Climb are massive pains in N Sane.

    Well, if we take Spyro as a reference, Toys for Bob actually improved his controls in Reignited Trilogy, it's 10 times more responsive and snappier than the original. Vicarious Visions, on the other hand, didn't quite got Crash's controls / physics right. It's not unplayable, but it can be annoying to do some jumps, and the hit box (both Crash's and the enemies') is also a little unfair. So yeah, I'm trusting Toys for Bob more on this one. Also, according to the official website, Beenox is helping them too. And Beenox knows the Crash shit.

    I’ve re-read previous issues and am excited for issue 28 tomorrow. I do feel that the real-world virus pandemic has affected my perspective a little. Before it was a far-flung, unlikely-to-happen idea, now we’ve been living it in the real world and had lockdown since March I’m kinda ‘very much done’ with virus-related things as a result. It’s unfortunate timing but hey at least it happened almost at the end of the metal virus story rather than near the beginning.

    Coinciding with the 20th Anniversary of The Sonic Stadium, Sonic Musical Spectacular is making it's grand return for the fifth year running! Originally created as an anniversary event for Sonic's 24th anniversary, the event has become a yearly tradition on SSMB, typically coinciding with the anniversary of SSMB's unofficial streaming channel - Motobug! This year however is a hugely important year for the event - not only as it arrives on the 20th anniversary of the site, but it also arrives on Motobug's 5th anniversary. This year marks five years since the original channel was created. For those of you joining the event for the first time, the Sonic Musical Spectacular is an event based around looking back at the history of Sonic's musical career - where the community comes together to make a playlist of songs from the entire series, and we air this playlist live on SSMB's unofficial streaming channel - Motobug - in a two day event. Once again, the event is being hosted by myself, and the other members of Motobug, as well as being sponsored and helped by @Strickerx5! As usual, it is important to ensure you read the OP, and understand the rules before taking part in the event! The event itself is more or less similar to how it was last year. As last year's changes to the structure of the event got positive feedback, we've decided to run with it once again this year. So this is how the event works - you can request Sonic songs and they will be added to the playlist that can be found inside of the topic OP below. This playlist is a huge playlist that will be compiled from the requests from every single member who participates in the event, and will cover more or less every game and media in Sonic's history. Nearly every game will be listed in the playlist below with three to four song slots (depending on how popular the game typically is), as well as an additional remix slot. Regular Slots - are fairly self-explanatory - they are regular versions of Sonic songs. For example - Open Your Heart, Green Light Ride, Rooftop Run (Day), etc. Remix Slots - on the other hand are a remixed version of a Sonic song, and can either be an official remix (Example - the special remix of Can You Feel the Sunshine officially released), or it can be a fan remix/cover of a song (Example - "The Worst Timeline" - Stardust Speedway Bad Future JP Remix by John Davis). As an example of how each game will be laid out: Sonic Adventure: Now, in terms of the requests - there's a slight change from last year. Everyone will receive 4 regular song requests, and 2 remix requests, making up a total of 6 requests per person. As usual, the catch to this is that you can't use multiple requests for the same game, so for example - one person cannot pick two Team Sonic Racing requests, they can only choose one. This is to keep things fair so no one can simply use all of their requests to take up the entirety of one game. As per last year's rule set as well, we will not be granting extensions to a game's song list, as we did in previous years, namely due to how much of a hassle it is to determine which games should get extensions to their song lists. Instead, we'll judge how popular the game usually is in terms of requests, and grant it the additional slots from the start. If a game's song list is filled, you're just gonna have to pick a different song from a different game. As the songs are submitted, the OP will be updated fairly consistently with the requests (Specifically - the songs section). Please keep an eye on it and check if there's available song slots for your request, or that your song request hasn't already been chosen. The next rule to discuss is linking the songs. You do not have to link the songs themselves, typing the name of the song you want is enough. The only time we might need a link is for your remix requests. However - if you choose to link the songs, please use the hyperlink option (the small chain icon at the top of the text box). Embedding a lot of videos can cause major slowdown of the site, and can even crash mobiles and tablets, and make it more difficult for myself and the mods to access the page and update the OP. Also - if linking a song - please ensure it's the non-extended version of the song. Finally - please ensure that you are linking the correct version of the song, and not parody versions. For example - SilvaGunner tracks, while they're fair game for the remix slot - they will not count as regular versions of a song, and therefore won't count for a regular song request. After all that is done and the playlist has been compiled from everyone's requests, we will be streaming the entire playlist on SSMB's Streaming Channel - Motobug https://cytu.be/r/Motobug Finally, if you create Sonic song remixes yourself, we're also bringing back the option to debut it live on Motobug during the stream. As usual, this is entirely optional, and will not be taken into account when it comes to the requests. You do not have to submit your own remixes. The last thing to mention is that as we did last year - we're splitting the actual stream into two separate days as not only is the playlist usually massive in length, but a lot of people enjoyed this change last year. So the playlist will be streamed over two days. One more thing to mention - the deadline for requests, and the air dates/times of the stream! Request Submission Deadline: July 17th 2020 Stream Airdate and Time: July 25th 2020 - July 26th 2020 - Time to be announced. As mentioned, there's a few minor changes to the event this year. These are: Everyone now has four regular song requests, and two remix requests for a total of six song requests overall. You can choose to premiere/debut a remix that you made (This is OPTIONAL) We've swapped out the Nights and Jet Set Radio categories last year for a extra length General SEGA section in celebration of SEGA's 60th anniversary. This is where the song list will be kept, and updated. Click on the spoiler tags for a specific game to check the slots, and see what's taken, and what's free. If you notice any missing games, feel free to let me know. Furthermore - SEGA General will allow submissions from any SEGA series - I.E - Yakuza, Persona, Jet Set Radio, Nights, Skies of Arcadia, etc. Some games may be lumped together, due to lack of popularity in past years. If the need arises, we'll separate them out. That said... If it's a cover long after the original by a different artist, but official - then it counts as a remix (I.E - Tee Lope's remix of Can You Feel the Sunshine).     Yeah, this is a separate project from MaGMML3 and MaGMML1R. I think we intended it to be part of the latter at first, but split it off after that game had a longer than expected development period. Progress on MaGMML3 has been pretty slow for a few reasons, such as the sheer volume of levels to be judged (there were like 185 submissions), and medical problems on the part of one of the judges, but levels are still slowly but surely being judged. In fact, at least one judge has finalised their scores by now.

    Yes, the only exceptions are covers by the original song writers - for example - Zebrahead's cover of His World would be countered as a regular request, while Can You Feel the Sunshine from Tee Lope would fall under a remix.

    I am also seeing a lot of positivity towards the comic in fandom, including from more causal fans, and "people making IDW Sonic should be writing the games" is certainly a common sentiment. I am really enjoying current arc, very emotional and impactful, and even if the ending doesn't live up, I don't think it's going to ruin anything for me. The nature of the arc didn't allow for much tonal variety but that makes me all the more hyped for what comes next; I tried to ignore solicits and covers but it seems, whether we are jumping straight into the next arc or getting one or two "filler" stories, Evan Stanley's first issues are going to be more lighthearted and shenanigans focused.

And you get the feeling from Ian that he kind of wants to move on too. I personally get the feeling that Ian may have run into his old nemesis editor with idea, and I have strong feeling that we will find out after the fact the arc was not supposed to be as long as it was

    Oh you just know how this was taken by the zealot ND defenders. Even Jeff ended up responding to this basically missing the whole point of the video to immediately defend himself, when he wasn’t even being attacked by Jim here. His tweet was used to springboard into a broader topic, about the relationship between game journalists and game developers, and AAA games and their heightened perception as “Quality art” likened to Oscar winning films, and he, and people that are tired about hearing about how shitty the AAA industry is looked at a fraction of the video that simply lightheartedly acknowledged Jeff’s ridiculous comparison, and went “wooow that’s low even for you, I’m unsubbing take that”

    Don't know about the rest of you, but I'm really looking forward to issue #28 tomorrow. I've enjoyed the IDW run so much, and it'll be great for it to hopefully be back up and running. Although honestly, I am also slightly keen for this virus arc to wrap up too, and for the book to move on. Excited for the end of the arc, but also excited for how things will journey past it, especially when Evan Stanley gets a stronger influence on things.

    There are a few interesting things to be noted in these gameplays. The return of gem routes for example. I believe a dev confirmed that this game will have more gems than usual and getting the clear gem still requires you to break EVERY crate in the level.

    Crash himself arguably looks better than ever. I love how he looked in N Sane, I love how he looks here. I do think Coco and Cortex look a bit better in N Sane, but whatevs, nothing wrong with Toys For Bob painting things with their own brush.

    Out of nowhere. Rayman Redemption is a complete fanmade remake of the original Rayman with a plethora of new features. Among other things it includes the ability to increase max health after collecting certain amounts of Electoons and a casual mode in which you have infinite lives. There's also some new bonus levels to discover. Rayman 1 is the only main game in the series I'm not super familiar with; this looks like just the modernized update it needed for me to finally try it out.     I for one, am feeling a bit frustrated at the fact that it seems every Sonic game from now till the end of the time is going to be a big anniversary blowout, every five years... Now if Sonic games are gonna take longer to make, that's fine, I'm not asking them to rush them out sooner than they should, that's the last thing I want. But if Sonic game releases are only ever going to fall on/around "important" milestone years... please stop caring about anniversaries. In the last decade we had, depending on how one categorizes Mania, 3 or 4 mainline Sonic games. One of those games is not based around revisiting old content from the franchise's storied past. I want the franchise to continue building a storied future, not celebrate Green Hill again and again every five years.

    Sonic 2020 - Episode White Jungle

    Just played it. First off, this is one of the most fully featured 3D fan projects that I've ever experienced and the amount of work here really does show. The team should be recognized for that alone. With that being said though, there are a lot of issues. I won't harp on it too much with it purely being a fan made demo but the jank in level design is very apparent. The game sort of expects you to know how every system works (along with their rough patches) right off the bat and, with an overabundance of pitfalls, it's really all a test of trial and error. I really don't know how someone with no experience with this style of gameplay would handle some of these sections. They're just not intuitive for the most part. While the mechanics themselves are solid, some of the segments in this level aren't. And that second level... yikes, it's just not good. The game just isn't in a good enough state to be doing such platforming where the penalty for failure is completely starting over. Hell, even in a complete and tight platformer I'd question a level like this. Having to start over because of one bad jump just isn't fun. It's repetitive and got annoying quickly. After that there are also just a number of technical issues that keep the gameplay from being enjoyable. The camera doesn't always keep track of what's coming up during loops (which really shouldn't be an issue in a boost game). Glitches are abundant. It really isn't optimized (on a processing level) in a number of areas and, while the special effects are great, the actual texture work of these levels are early 2010s Unreal dev tool asset quality. They really don't mesh well with what are, otherwise, well made Sonic series assets. Also, for the few lines that are there, that script could use a second pass. Sonic sounds so gd robotic and unnatural with these lines. Now with this all being said, a lot of this is par for the course with projects like this. For what it is, the proof of concept is there. This is more along the lines of what I wish ST would do with the main series than anything else they've put out in the last 8 or so years. It's great seeing the 3D fan game space starting to turn out more complex offerings like this. Moving away from simple Unreal/ Unity engine tech demos, or custom engine playgrounds that don't lead anywhere. If the team behind this can optimize what's here (and probably just remove that second level)... a lot of good could come from this.

    For better or worse, a good portion of the fanbase prioritize the lore and setting over the game. It's been a thing since Adventure started to emphasize those elements more.
