Here's my birthday haul! A Cuphead book, My Hero Academia Pops, New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe, a package of japanese snacks, and a brand new laptop! Pretty great day, if I must say!

Maybe I'm just old, but outside of one friend group I hang out with in a Discord server most days I actually have no idea how to interact in larger servers at all. I've poked my head into a few but when I see they have dozens of people talking all at once I just dip out immediately lol

While Hunnid-P turning out to be a nasty person is a bummer, I'm shocked at the amount of people who think he was solely responsible for the SA2 Knuckles music, that was all the wonderful Tomoya Ohtani. Like... Sonic soundtracks aren't exactly high art, I'm pretty sure they just hire vocalists they know/like/can afford (not necessarily all 3). And let's not forget that even if the lyrics were HP's, the Knuckles raps are beloved because said lyrics are so hilariously awful anyway.

I love everything of Sonic Advance 2's true ending, from the Super Sonic boss to the cutscenes. That scene when Sonic saves Vanilla while falling from the sky. I also like Sonic Adventure 2's ending, Eggman and Sonic being more friendly than usual and the whole Shadow sacrifice thing.

Fan-Service doesn't just refer to that kind of thing, fan-service is essentially just something that has been added to a piece of material in order to please fans, specifically to do that, even if it doesn't make sense. I.E - for example - how the Emperor was randomly added to The Rise of Skywalker - he's one of the most beloved and iconic villains in history, and Ian McDermott is seen as the best thing in all of the prequels. Which is why Disney randomly bullshitted an excuse to revive him for TRoS, and had him spewing out beloved memes. It's the same thing with Heroes. It makes little to zero sense, but gets away on the very premise of just having these insane fusions, transformations, and everything else that fans think is just super cool. Super Saiyan 4 Vegito, Golden Cooler, SSJ3 Raditz/Nappa/Vegeta/Broly, Resurrected Merged Zamasu, Adult Gotenks, etc. That's the appeal of the series, it throws logic out the window to simply deliver the most insane, but also cool as fuck characters and fusions.

Ok, the meme has been perfected. Go home people.

Why is Sonic Boom (the tv show) so devoid of music for like most of each episode? It really emphasizes the dryness and boringness of the show and it’s often boring drawn out humor

...I just remembered this was a thing and decided I need to make one fast request before the general slot is full; 1. Reign (Yakuza 0) (SEGA General) Because. I was arguing back and forth with couple of other tracks but decided, after a long thought, this would be pretty awesome to include even when it isn't as classic as "Receive You". Even with all the Engrish this kicks butt like the fight it was serving for as the background track as far as I'm concerned. I will come back to throw out more choices later though. I seriously love these Spectaculars. 😁 Probably one of the best things in here. Sorry I'm not so funny to ask for that Get to the Top! Remix of the End karoke track. ______________________EDIT_____________________ADDED_______SOMETHING___________________________SORRY__________________________ Ookayy, this is somewhat of a bother, but since I'm not too keen on double-posting, I'll add this other request down here... Sorries for the inconvenience and impracticality, it just occurred to me... 😅 2. Waking Up (Shadow the Hedgehog) Yet again, sorries...

    IDW's Sonic the Hedgehog

It feels like SEGA/Sonic Team just don't give a damn about worldbuilding anymore beyond the absolute bare minimum to set up a new game's plot. Forces is probably the apex of Sonic Team's laziness when it comes to this sort of thing nowadays - the premise had a lot of potential, but they did absolutely nothing interesting with it beyond perhaps Shadow accidentally creating a major antagonist due to the jackal who would become Infinite being an enemy in a routine mission. The fact that Flynn and co. actually salvaged the post-Forces status quo into something worth reading is nothing short of a miracle considering the garbage fire of material they had to continue from. Which still doesn't make a goddamn bit of sense, by the way. Eggman Nega as some weird psychotic alternate universe counterpart of Eggman (which was clearly the original intent for the character) I could easily accept, because, well, that sort of thing is makes sense for alternate universe stuff and is a staple trope of alternate universe shenanigans, but Nega being his descendant is a significantly greater leap of logic that isn't given the time or effort to justify itself. It really just feels like a half-assed means of justifying Silver showing up, really, which is infuriating, because Nega is supposed to be Blaze's nemesis. Which seems to be a moot point, though, since Nega apparently has legal issues surrounding him that makes it difficult for anyone to use him again, but that's not surprising since Sega is absolutely terrible at getting their ducks in a row when it comes to securing to rights to rights for stuff related to Sonic (this was a problem even before Penders started his temper tantrum - for example, Sega never properly secured the rights for the OVA material, which caused problems when the Archie comics referenced it).

It was a little weird to me at first but you gotta remember that this series is very heavily inspired by the games but it's not meant to be 1:1. They could probably write in a new story where they meet Silver if they ever start fleshing out past events.

Haven't been on for a while. Things are a bit crazy on my end. I'm getting my room completely re-done and had to spend all day cleaning it out and what not. Also, I currently don't have a bed but one is coming by Sunday. So there's that. I finally have time to review this annual though, at almost 4 in the morning. It's another really good one too. 95% of SA2's story was about Sonic and his friends going on an adventure to stop that overweight scientist. The game begins with Sonic jumping out of a helicopter and complaining that his arrest didn't come with any food or movies and then he proceeds to skateboard down the streets of San Francisco. SA2 didn't make anyone forget that stuff or say that being serious was the only way to go. It blended the adventure and built up to the more serious stuff properly. In my opinion, there hasn't been a story like SA2 since SA2 came out. 06 was melodramatic ALL the time and Shadow's game was over the top in how serious it was. I'm actually really tired of people looking at SA2 and thinking its nothing but the Shadow backstory. We only see bits and pieces of it in the dark story and then one cutscence is dedicated to explaining it in the last story. Its an overblown criticism. All it did was tell a story that people liked and SEGA failed to properly recreate. Besides, we've had nothing but light-hearted stories for 10 years. It doesn't matter if people want a more serious Sonic because they're being mostly ignored. I guess Forces tried but... not really. (BTW, this is just my opinion. You're free to think different of course.)

    IDW's Sonic the Hedgehog

Idk if they add characters from series that's not active anymore/considered "dead". Guess it depends on if Sega (specifically SoJ) accepts the FFs as an important part of their history, and official Sonic multiverse. If they do, they do. If they don't, they don't. A thing to note is that while the FFs/Sally has a big presence in the west, specifically the US, they are barely known outside the country. They also have multiple versions, and their own unique story/deep history completely separate from the games. At least Mighty, Ray and the Chaotix were all game characters (obscure, but still created by Sega) with barely any traits so they seemed more appealing to "reboot" or "revive" back into the series.
  34. 1 point
Years at best. I wouldn’t doubt them ever coming back, but Sega are infamous for dragging their feet on this—it took almost 10 years for three of the Chaotix to come back and over 20 years for Mighty and Ray to come back. Not to mention how long it took before they even bothered to bring Classic Sonic back, or how they’ve segregated their appearances. So you can hold out hope for them, but if the above is any indicator, you’ll be doing so for a very, very long time at best.

If we open the door to find more Warp Topaz sitting around somewhere... then doesn't that also blow open the possibility of locating a second Phantom Ruby? Can't make it too easy to get their hands on these mythical gemstones. I'd much rather have him figure out a way to get his previous possession back from Eggman.

    IDW's Sonic the Hedgehog

It might also help that as it stands, IDW Sonic is basically the only Sonic thing happening right now. No announced games, the movie sequel is at least 2 years away, we've yet to see the rumoured cartoon series materialise. Might as well mine the one Sonic thing going on right now, and probably good idea to do it while IDW Sonic is still so young. Arguably it would be more difficult for such a thing to happen if IDW Sonic had far more issues and stories behind it.
  38. 1 point
I don't think (not anymore) it means anything, but yeah they are being added to the game, they aren't "special event characters" like the 3 from the movie. Plus, IDWSonic is basically set in Modern Sonic, so Tangle and Whisper are built around Modern Sonic, more or less, besides fitting a lot. As Ian, Evan, Katie and everyone at SEGA said, it's a start and it could lead possibly to more. The reason why you don't get Sticks anymore in stuff is because Boom is dead, and Sticks was from that continuity, with Boom dead, she's gone too, with Archie dead, the Freedom Fighters are lost and forgotten too, besides being tied to the Archie vs SEGA difficulties. I just want to celebrate that these 2 cool, strong fan favorites are in 2 mobile games.
  39. 1 point
Well it's still early in the comic's lifetime. After this whole Zombot problem is taken care of, they could do more than a few one off issues. And it helps that IDW prioritizes GNs over floppies, so collecting will be much easier than with Archie. Also on the topic of game adaptation, it may be possible that IDW could start getting game material early, working with concept art of future games which they could adapt into long term stories, perhaps incorporating things the game couldn't cover that was on the cutting room floor. Something like the Pre-Forces comics, but on a grander scale. That would definitely make the wait between announcements much more bearable, and could do a lot to help with more lackluster story elements in the games. The thing is the comic is definitely in a more unique situation, because it's in a similarly vague place as the games, and unlike something like Sonic X, it isn't stuck in a short term licensing deal for a limited number of episodes. It takes place squarely in the game universe as we see, with similar adaptation of mechanics from games, but without the huge alterations previous adaptations had. And with how SEGA have been working with IDW, it's almost like they're acknowledging these comics as a serious branch for engaging with Sonic, though with definite differences for sure. We could be in a similar situation as the Pokemon anime, where it stands as a huge branch worldwide for exposing people to the world of Pokemon and filling in details for kids that maybe the games don't touch upon. And the anime usually gets material from TPC very early in production to get to work on the anime. Again though, all hypothetical. At the least it's fun to theorize even if it's implausible.
  40. 1 point
Let's hypothesize on this point. If this is more than just a one off crossover event for a mobile release and is just a step on canonizing Tangle and Whisper, how does the role of the comic change? For the most part we've understood that the comics represented a spin-off that SEGA usually just lets do it's own thing while regulating enough to keep it in the spirit of the Sonic series as a whole, but if suddenly the possibility of elements being canonized into the series, what will that mean for how the comics and the events within effect the games? Is it possible for plots to be borrowed, or for expanded adaptations of games? Would the comics be suddenly used as a sort of introductory series to Sonic like how the Pokemon anime is for the games? That's all just hypothetical in the case that this crossover isn't a one-off.

This is honestly really awesome and the models look great, but the resentful Archie Sonic fan in me is still grumbling a bit. Le sigh. I'll try to suppress that since this is still really great news, especially for IDW fans. And I really love these character designs too despite not being an IDW reader, so it's still cool.

    IDW's Sonic the Hedgehog

Ian has stated Sega has been a lot more hands on with the original characters in IDW than they ever were with Archie. I honestly could see IDW's cast being similar to the situation with Sticks where Sega sees them as characters they created. As many fans as the Freedom Fighters had and specifically as popular as Sally and Scourge got, there was probably always this disconnect Sega had with characters they had little hand in creating. There is probably a level of bias there.
  43. 1 point
Nevermind how they botched the license, just the fact they never even released their comic in multiple languages until the turn of the previous decade is silly and even then to a limited set of languages. Sega of America were on good enough terms with the comics to put their covers in their collections during the early 2000s, and use them as influence for Sonic Chronicles so clearly there was a level of familiarity and interest in them at least to the american fanbase. But they never showed up anywhere else, which to be fair is because they were probably never expecting to make it past the first half of the 90s, still it was on Archie to actually expand their longest running license. But whatever, at least now the comics are getting recognition which is definitely a huge improvement, and with the same staff on duty.
  44. 1 point
If Archie were actually enthusiastic about Sonic enough to market it more than they did and not botch their handling of the license, they probably would’ve. The saving grace at least is that Sega owns everything Post-Reboot. So there’s always that chance they give characters the revival like the Chaotix or Mighty and Ray. Of course, those took years to even decades to make a comeback, and Sega tend to be haphazard, so no guarantees.
  45. 1 point
Man, imagine if Archie Sonic had more of a worldwide focus, maybe they could have had more crossover with SEGA. I bet you this current decision is influenced by the fact the comics are now coming to Japan and will be more relevant to the Japanese crowd. Oh well, Ian must be happy with this news. Actually being acknowledged by Japan is one thing, but to have your character show up in a game is unreal. Let's see if we can get a main game next time.

    IDW's Sonic the Hedgehog

I don't think it necessarily means anything in regards to canon; Movie Sonic and Longclaw showed up, but nobody's calling those canon to Modern Sonic. It's just a bit of cross-promo. Saying that, I'd love to be wrong! I think Tangle and Whisper are really great, and I'm glad they're showing up in at least some kind of game setting.

I tend to see Rouge as more likely to rein Shadow in than vice-versa, at least based on how Ian's written them and stuff like Heroes. Though, true, they do display varying levels of responsibility depending on the situation, but Shadow has a tendency to be kind of childish and obstinate that it's funnier for me to see Rouge as the parent (even if she's probably a bad parent).
