Penders has repeatedly claimed that that was, in fact, what he was after... unfortunately though that's not really the case. In addition to royalties Penders wanted to retain ownership of his characters, and the problem with THAT is that Archie could only publish Sonic so long as everything they made for the book was owned by SEGA. Penders retaining ownership of his characters would essentially make him a secondary licensor on the book, in violation of Archie's contract. And that's without getting into the fact he wanted control over decisions made about characters such as Julie-Su and Locke... or the fact he attempted, in lieu of money, tried to get his Knuckles' movie made instead... Point of order- despite how Penders tries to play it, his demands were never, ever reasonable. And yeah... all that grief that happened with Archie has pretty much officially happened for nothing, because it's pretty clear at this point that Penders is never going to deliver on any of his grandiose promises.

i was JUST talking about not having any idea what Naka's even up to anymore and he drops Balan on us. I'll bet Iizuka wishes he was part of that party with Naka and Oshima rather than being stuck with Sonic

SPP kind of makes the plot of Sonic Colors hilarious, considering that Eggman already had the capacity for much more effective and long-lasting mind control before harnessing the Wisps.

I really hope Balon does well after Naka's previous attempts at making a Nights successor fell through.

Rewatched Sonic Lost World's story cutscenes. I kinda liked it up until the part where Eggman and Tails started bickering. Up until that point the idea of two immature teens/kids terrorizing Eggman seemed hilarious. Would have been a lot more interesting if Eggman's plan was actually to make Sonic and Tails argue with each other and get them to lower their guard. Nice and conniving. Anyway yeah they dropped the ball.

I mean, yeah, Knuckles doesn’t have to be involved in every story (not that anyone’s saying that). But I can still understand the fear that Sega might end up being over-restrictive for this. Time will tell how this ends up being handled tho.

Aside from what everyone said, there's also the fact he's pretty much defenceless. The other possible options/risks were: Amy stands her ground and keep the zombot busy, but him running away may catch their attention. He could run away from the fight, but Amy may try sabotaging him somehow (she wouldn't, but he would consider that a possibility) Both run away in different direction, the zombot may decide to go after him. Both run away in the same direction with the zombots chasing both. Gonna be harder to use her as a distraction at that point. If he kicks/push Amy into a Zombot, he can at least ensure safety from the threat(s) in front of him.

It blows my mind that not only did two original Sonic Team legends rejoin for a game but they've also somehow still maintained that aesthetic charm from the Saturn/Dreamcast era! The colorful, noodly Y2K-ass character designs have me living.

I definitely agree on Eggman valuing his own ego over sadism itself. There have been many times when he gets mad at things for being indiscriminately destructive yet his rampant pollution of the world through making his Eggman Empire/Eggmanland/Personal Theme Park causes just as much long term damage as, say, Dark Gaia or the Black Arms Invasion.

I wasn't surprised by Eggman shoving Amy, but something about it didn't really click with me. It's totally in-character with this interpretation of Eggman, but I guess some part of me still thinks "It's one thing to take them prisoner and threaten them but when you actually hurt somebody, that's going too far." Eggman from X is the definitive version of him.

I hope that the next Paper Mario game doesn't go all in on the paper themeing again. 64 had a storybook theme and TTYD was much the same with a few more paper jokes (particularly the curses). And then Super rolled along and just kept the paper motif to add depth to the dimension flipping mechanic but really wasn't paper themed at all beyond that. SS, CS and now OK are all so obsessed with the world of paper that the story, world and gameplay mechanics revolve almost entirely around it. It was kinda cute that one time when SS went to town on the idea, but I'm totally over it now. Although with Nintendo's silly new rules and mandates, it's hard to think about what else the series can do. Super already got rid of a bunch of the aspects that played on the existing Mario franchise by setting the game in a world totally outside of Mario's with entirely different characters (plus things like Kammy being replaced by Kamek), but since then it just feels like Intelligent Systems have been even more strong-armed into being only using existing Mario concepts. It's such a shame that they can't go all out anymore. That's exactly what I lived about the first two/three games.

I kinda like to think it could be like Archie and Tikal just pops out and tells him to go. And they argue about it for like an hour until Tails comes to pick him up.

So apparently (according to another user in this thread) there's this new mandate that Knuckles can't even leave the island anymore. If true, can SEGA just STOP? I mean, I get that fans wanted him to smarten up and actually protect the Master Emerald. But to completely KICK HIM OUT OF STORIES unless whatever problem's happening on Angel Island is going the OPPOSITE extreme. Oh god... I think WE'RE the partial cause for the recent mandates. Shadow's memed vegeta personality, Knuckles protecting the Emerald... These ate things the FANS joked about and/or wanted. I think SEGA is taking in our suggestions and misconstuing them because they're out of touch with the fan base and making them into mandates. Goddamn, SEGA of Japan needs to relinquish control of this comic to someone who actually UNDERSTANDS these characters.

Ok, I know Paper Mario: The Origami King is going to do nothing to resolve the divide with fans. The battle system is a main part of that and while some seem to like it, others do not. Having past the Yellow Streamer, I'm starting to hate it. The story and writing have been bugging me too. It's an improvement over SS and CS. I played through those two games with barely any emotional reaction. They were "Meh." But Origami King feels like it's trying to be something better and because it falls short in my eyes, it frustrates me a little. If that makes sense.

Adding to one of my earlier statuses - a reminder that the era of Rabbids that screwed Rayman originally only lasted between 2006 and 2011 (I count the first Raving Rabbids game as a Rayman mini-game collection, since that happened before the Rabbids became popular), a five year gap. We're now going onto a 7 year gap with no new console title, and given the announcements, I imagine it'll be eight years next year too.

Sonic the Hedgehog (SatAM) is honestly my favorite Sonic series if I think about it long enough. Other then that episode where Sonic goes into space and has a battle of the bands moment with some robots, those Antoine exclusive episodes, and a few moments with Dulcy, I still like most things about this show. It's up there with other good short lived action-adventure shows like Swat Kats for me. I could nitpick a few things like Tails not being as prominent as he should have been, but it all just...somehow works. Even Sonic's outdated slang just feels charming to me. I first saw this series when I was 17 and I still get a laugh at Sonic & Sally arguing over right and left, I still get a little teary eyed when Sonic was unable to save his Uncle Chuck and I still get tense at this scene between Snively and Robotnik. I swear, I was only a year away from turning into an adult and yet - I literally JUMPED at that scene when Robotnik finally exploded on Snively. Robotnik also has one of my favorite villainous break downs in a 90s kid's cartoon, the fact that it's an expanded and intense version of AOSTH Robotnik's catchphrase "I hate that hedgehog!" just makes it even better. I love the soundtrack too, there's just something so triumphant, whimsical, and full of hope that this score brings. I think what's helped make SatAM's appeal last as long as it has, beside it being a pretty good early 90s Saturday Mourning Cartoon with an interesting premise with likable characters with a long running spiritual successor in comic form, is that it's just the most interesting of all the Sonic Cartoons to talk about. You can talk about what you like and disliked about it of course just like any other show, there's a lot that can be talked about from that alone, but then there's also the "What-ifs". What if we got that third season? What if we got the movie Ben Hurst wanted ? Other interesting things include, Len Janson having to justify the shows' creative liberties to Sega(in particularly the Blast to the Past two-parter), the show's original Season 1 theme song that was only used when it originally aired on TV, the lost intro intended for the pilot "Heads or Tails", Sonic Underground originally being a continuation of SatAM, etc. That's not even getting into the show's pre-production, human Sally, Ganon Robotnik, Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog originally being a prequel to the Saturday Mourning series, etc. There is just so many interesting facts and ideas to talk about, this has just been a few. Happy belated Birthday, Sonic the Hedgehog (SatAM). I hope we can continue watch and learn even more about this fascinating show in the future. "Let's do it, to it!"

I know these comics are made for kids and they don't want to drag things even more, but I just wish each Zeti could get at least one entire issue for their battles, maybe it's because i'm used to long-anime style arcs like Dragon Ball have, but it always bothered me how the fights in these comics are so short and it's all resolved so easily that it feels like every victory to the heroes was undeserved. Most of the time, it's something like "Character X punch Character Y, they talk a little, the fight ends", no choreography that's just fun to look at, no smart strategy that make you go "WoW", nothing. It's always feels so rushed and uninspired that any page containing a fight scene mighty as well just be blank with a "Fight is happening" text written over it. With that being said, the ending itself was pretty cool and I don't have any complaints about it , I do enjoy Flynn's writting a lot, and IDW Sonic has been a fun ride for me from the beginning, but i'll never not be annoyed when I see a fight scene in the book...

But yea, the main bulk of the arc is over with, and we got three more issues for the denouement. Honestly, looking back, I didn't actually dislike this arc. There were a lot of moments I liked, and probably the only thing that stands out as really bad for me was the whole Shadow debacle in Issue #19. Right now, it's sitting at a solid B-, and it could shoot up depending on how the next three issues play out.

How would YOU rewrite the characters?

It's kind of impossible to ever take them seriously; any advantage they've gotten is entirely because they just stole Eggman's act. It doesn't really make us see them as legit villains, but just opportunists as you said. If we're meant to take them seriously as a threat, then maybe let them be threatening on their own terms instead of just being a more boring version of Eggman.

I think the main issue with SatAm Sonic was that they tended to flanderize his trademark attitude and impulsiveness as him being a perpetually arrogant jock with no sense of strategy, especially under Ben Hurst's pen. Not to STC's level where he's just a full on jerk, but he did sort of take the role of the 'impetuous protagonist that always has to learn lessons' by Season Two, with Antoine kinda being flanderized even worse so he still looked competent by relation (I don't think this really helped though, since they also made Sonic so damn snide and outspokenly 'Hey everyone, look how much cooler I am than THIS loser' that he started to come off as unlikeable). Sonic being cocksure and NEVER learning from his mistakes also rubbed the wrong way in a show where the stakes were far more serious and Sonic was putting way more people at risk just to show off (this was something that slowly led me to find Archie Sonic kind of odious as follies piled up as well, since several of them had actual casualties). I don't mind Sonic being vulnerable in areas, and let's face it, no matter what interpretation, Sonic is to some degree arrogant and works getting taken down a peg sometimes, but I think Season One actually had a better balance for Sonic in terms of competence while actually letting the other characters shine a lot more (especially Bunnie who got WAY more tidbits of importance in that season). I also kinda preferred his dynamic with Sally in that season, with Sally being as bull headed and flawed about her strategic approach as Sonic was his on-the-fly one, while Season Two tended to just go for Sonic being reckless and 'wrong' and Sally being cautious and 'right' (this is the 90s, the girl always has to be the more competent one :P). In Season Two, Sally just becomes WAY too all encompassing, you could tell Hurst was a bit overfond of the character. None of the one shots or even most of the other main Freedom Fighters really get to do much or have much of an agency because her 'brains and brawn' dynamic with Sonic is too perfect for every job (at least when Sonic listens to her). I mean for how popular Lupe is, does she or any of the other guest Freedom Fighters actually help at all in the final showdown after all that build up? I actually think SatAm did a better job giving the Freedom Fighters some level of vibrancy compared to the comics, where I always tended to find them a bit too 'normal' and dry outside the earlier issues, it feels like their quirks and whimsy stick out more in the show, especially the pilot which even has an adorably dorky Rotor. Robotnik kinda leans the opposite direction, not that he didn't have SOME subtle moments of comedy, but I think, much like Sonic, the show had a way harder time balancing the character of his new premise, with him now being a competent conqueror who has kept grasp of the planet for over a decade, and yet keeps losing to the Freedom Fighters primarily out of arrogance or sadistic impulses. There's at least a couple instances where Sonic could have EASILY captured or disposed of him, but of course the show would end if he did. I think despite it's status within the fanbase as the perennial 'dark' Sonic adaption, SatAm actually did a better job maintaining a balance of light hearted and dramatic compared to other 'darker' takes of the franchise, but still suffered from a rather pretentious air sometimes and failing to be the 'epic' that the creators wanted it to be. Some of the blueprints for Season Three suggest this would have only gotten worse, with some rather morbid and nonsensical ideas like NICOLE's backstory and the premise deviating even further away from the games and more into 'monarchy vs sorcery' (compared to early on where, unlike the 'dark' Japanese takes, the show actually does a decent job still keeping the Sonic vs Eggman premise relevent just with its own twist). For all people complain about Underground for being a poor man's Satam (including Hurst who had to work on that as well) I do think it at least sometimes shown improvements in strengthening the premise, such as making the sibling trio more balanced in terms of strengths and flaws and importance compared to the clear heirarchy of the Freedom Fighters, as well as giving more substance to why Robotnik could maintain control when he still acted like a blundering doofus at points.

    Archie Sonic Main Discussion

From memory, I'd say Mina's time is roughly between #75 - #125. I mean, I think you are basically right, Mina basically exists to establish a bit of a love triangle between her, Sonic, and Sally. Mina is a cool character though, she definetly has one of the better Archie OC designs, and she does get a little bit of a character arc.

    Paper Mario: The Origami King

It really blows my mind how frequently Nintendo talks about how much 64 and TTYD suck in these interviews (and yes I partly blame interviewers for continuously bringing them and the fan complaints up). Imagine if another game company did this. Like what if Id decided to not make Doom 2016 and instead continued with the original pitch for Doom 4 which looked like a fucking Call of Duty clone. Id: "We don't want to make games like Doom 1 and 2 again even though people loved those old games so much, we have officially decided that Doom 3 is the future of the franchise because we need to consider the needs of the casual fanbase" I've accepted the fact that Nintendo doesn't want to make games like old Paper Mario anymore, and if other people can enjoy the new games then by all means they should. But the fact that these interviews keep popping up, the ones that reference the old ones and how Nintendo is willfully ignorant of what people liked about them, digs up those old bitter feelings.
