Somewhere deep inside in my darkest of hearts , I'm dissapointed it's Ian Flynn writing this and not Pontac and Graff. Aren't they the official game writers now? I'd LOVE to see those clowns struggle to say anything meaningful about the franchise. "Haha, Eggman, has like, "Egg" in his name, haha. I wonder if he eats eggs? When he eats eggs, would he be like "Oh, an Egg. I have Egg in my name. I must eat it now. " That would be funny, Lol. How many people have Egg in their name? Oh, I know one Egbert. I wonder if he eats eggs?" So, the En-speed-opo-speed-ia. Place your bets wether A ) Sonic Team had any real impact on this or it's just Iizuka stamping his "What, who? Sure, whatever" seal of approval on everything. B ) The VERY FIRST game released after the encyclopodia will already contradict half the book. Thus cementing Ian Flynn's status as Sonic Team's janitor eternally mopping up the mess they make. Bonus points if the contradictions come from utterly irrelevant side details. C ) Bonus points if this book will be written from a meta perspective rather then in-universe. "How did Sonic and Tails meet and become friends? Well, in late 1991, Sonic Team wanted to include a second playable character in the next game in production, 1992's Sonic 2 for the Sega Genesis (Megadrive overseas) from 1989 (Which is the year thar came after the year 1988). So Tails was made. So the second player can play a second character. Which is Tails. So is main player character "Sonic" friends with 2nd player character "Tails"? "What, who? Sure, whatever" " But yeah, I'll probably buy it. Bitter snarking is the most fun I get out of this franchise at this point. Shame Ian Flynn is actually compotent and cares, the book might be halfway decent now.

That has to be one of the most painful hits Sonic had to take

Such a small thing, but I love how shy Tails was here, and how Sonic had to push him forward and give him a small confidence boost.

Phew... I pushed myself to finish the animated Kirby dance today. I still intend to add a background, music and maybe some other effects. The next time I show this off, it'll be my second completed animation.

The music for the past 5 Ratchet games have been so bland and forgettable, the remake was the worse offender of this as the original had such a catchy soundtrack, it's literally like if Rare or Microsoft remade Banjo-Kazooie but replaced all the original tracks with generic superhero film music.

You guys do know that this is probably going to be like actual material Sega gave him right? Like he's not just pulling stuff from memory this is Sega's official Sonic guidebook.

I always thought it was super cool how the original Sly Cooper had full on anime/manga inspired cutscenes for the Japanese version, to contrast the American Comic Book style it had around the world.

The Cook and Becker artbook... wasn't that great. I love Classic Sonic plenty, but they really shafted the Modern Sonic half of the book; most of it's just CG renders. There were a few nice surprises, such as a clean version of the Nintendo Dream Sonic Battle art and some rare Saturn-era stuff, but it's also got some extremely weird mistakes, like... American Sonic 2 art being pasted over the Japanese box's background? Seriously weird. I think if another artbook were to happen I'd want it to focus more on the Modern titles; I have enough Classic Sonic art to last me a lifetime now and while I do want some specific stuff digging up (such as Harmony pieces that aren't yet scanned properly afaik), I think the bulk of the Classic concept art is sorted. Give me those early SA1 renders that they showed at the JP concerts!

Sonic had an art book released a few years back, but it had such a limited release, I'd wager most people never even knew about it.

    Why Shadow didn't protect Maria?

SA2 has some plotholes, but this simply isn't one of them. Characters are more than a spreadsheet of traits, statistics and superpowers. The fact that Shadow failed the one person closest to him, the one he was supposed to save, informs his entire personality. These are all deliberate decisions. I don't think I'm giving them too much credit here either because this isn't exactly the most uncommon trope.

Beat Super Paper Mario. And with that, my Paper Mario binge is over. My final thoughts on this game? Kinda mixed on the story gameplay was kind of bland. The story was good, filled with twists and turns, a pretty good romantic plot (this is coming from someone who doesn't like romance), and really likable villains.I gotta say, they stuck with me more than the X-nauts or Ollie and the Legion of Stationary. Wish we could see them again in some way, shape, or form, but given Nintendo's current handling, I doubt that'll happen. However, I do think that the story was a bit out of place for a Mario game almost as if this was initially planned as a different game but Nintendo stepped in and suggest it be a Paper Mario game... I don't know, this happened before, maybe I just have my tinfoil hat on too tight. The tone, while good in its own right didn't really Mario-ish to me. The gameplay, though... I hate to say it, but it was very bland as a platformer, really with some really annoying parts. Exploration just didn't feel as fun or as awarding as the previous two Mario games and I didn't even bother looking for the extras this time around. And I can't say I really like the visuals of this game, that much... It goes for a geometic/digitalized theme for this game, but it just feels kind of bland in this one. I have to say, gameplay wise and visually, this was probably the weakest game. So yeah... that's it for Paper Mario for a while. What a ride! I have to say, I'm really gonna miss the classic style and the creativity of the designs and darker stories, But if this is the direction Nintendo insists on taking, then I think Origami King is at least step in the right direction, personal gripes aside. Here's to hoping the next Paper Mario game follows in those footsteps

    IDW's Sonic the Hedgehog

In all honesty, I kind of just wish these were cooldown issues instead of just going straight into an action-packed epilogue. Maybe it's just me, but we've just come off about 20 straight issues of action, and one of the darkest arcs out of IDW and Archie. All things considered, I would've preferred these two issues just took their time to breath, and show us everyone trying to deal with the fall-out of the near end of the world. Show us everyone trying to put their lives back together, show us what became of Starline or the Deadly Six, let this whole idea of Sonic losing his memory have time to breathe. But instead, we're going straight back into another Eggman mech attack, and yeah - while it's cool that he's using Omega's head as the pilot for it, it's still not cool enough for me to say this is what I wanted directly after this arc. At this point, I'm beginning to feel a bit burnt out of the heroes just jumping from crisis to crisis, and attack to attack. I can't wait til we get to the Chao issues if only because it'll provide a much welcome break from the near constant action.

I get the idea, but the execution looks kinda iffy. I work with that stuff, so it's likely just bothering my eye. It's a good change from the past ones which looked almost the same everytime, you know, the ring with the wings and stars and the red ribbon.

If you do don't expect anything too substantial they're pretty standard kids books but the Tales of Terror is notable because it has 1. Illustrations by Patrick Spaziante. 2. Features a story about Cream fighting Pod people and 3. Includes the Werehog. Thinking about this topic while the little short stories are fun I'd honestly not mind seeing some Junior Novels or something get made. I don't see Sonic getting like a YA length novel happening but I wouldn't turn down more books.

The Archie universe was literally built for the Freedom Fighters to share the spotlight with Sonic. The IDW comic isn't, so having them take over as main characters again would alienate every reader of the IDW Comic, even if they are fans of the characters. I can't see them in the IDW comic as anything but recurring supporting characters Sonic may run into on occasion. Probably another albeit smaller faction of the resistance. Sally might not be a princess anymore since there wouldn't be too much time to focus on finding her royal father and deal with her royal duties. Let alone tackle her love life for the umpteenth time

Despite the fact it borrows so much from Retro and some other wikis. The best book like this has to be the 20th anniversary one. The cook and Becker is amazing until it gets to the modern part and it just totally falls apart. As for this one... erm... I'm probably not going to buy right away. Just because the fact Flynn is writing it is really going to expose how much of this series he does know. And if it's just going to be a surface level knowledge which I suspect it might be. For example. We going to get sections on Bean and Bark? If so... We actually going to get good info on them and not the Archie comics lore? It's probably not going to delve into March or comics just literally be games... which instantly makes the other books more interesting. Though if they do include unseen artwork. Then it'll certainly be on my buy list.

Sonic had an art book released a few years back, but it had such a limited release, I'd wager most people never even knew about it. Don't suppose you could link to it, cause I've never heard of it either? As for the encyclopedia, I'm sure it'll be fine. In a way, I suppose it might answer some of the questions about how Sega views X character or X video game. Kindof hoping there is maybe some kind of shoutout to the various TV show and comic book canons, even if the focus on this will be just the games.

I think that maybe it's so low key because Sega wasn't ready to officially announce it yet. I'm not totally sure how it works but it feels like Amazon has specific times they put things up regardless of when they're officially announced. Either way very cool definitely going to get this when it comes out.

Was Julie ever meant to be particularly strong? It just seemed like she was competently trained enough to school Classic Vector and stand a brief chance against Knuckles. Woah, Shadow's kinda huge there.

I can guarantee you that he has not. Penders couldn't even be bothered to really read books written by his co-workers on Archie, and has repeatedly expressed disinterest in anything pertaining to the games. The only commentary he's offered on IDW has been about covers, while boasting about how things were done at Archie. Words really cannot BEGIN to convey this man's disinterest in anything Sonic related that he personally didn't write.

As much as I want a proper successor to Sonic Adventure, let's not forget that game isn't exactly perfect. And no, most of its issues cannot be blamed on the time frame. I know people love Sonic Adventure, but let's not get into the mindset that its the only way that 3D Sonic can work. I liked the Boost for what it was, and a lot of other people did too. If people truly want the series to evolve, then we need to get out this mindset that there is only a singular way of making Sonic work; you can make a new 3D Sonic game that takes elements from most its predecessors to make something new. There's no "right" way to do this.

That's not too controversial, I'd like that too, if only cuz I'm not a fan of the current satus quo. Granted, I hope they change the formula to something good. Honestly I really just wanna be able to freely control sonic again and not run down hallways.

    Why Shadow didn't protect Maria?

He was trying to protect her, by getting her out of the situation. But it's kind of hard to stop a bullet, even with superpowers. I feel like that's really all there is to it? Sometimes things go wrong even if you're good at what you're doing.

Perhaps it'll take until next year's 30th anniversary celebration for them to reveal the games, now delayed to 2022. It'll be like 2016's dissapointing 25th anniversary party all over again. Altough at least they have an excuse this time.
