The invincibility theme from SA1, SA2 and Heroes is brilliant. I love that it just changed subtly between each game, first starting with You Can Do Anything in SA1 and ending with the Sonic Heroes in the game of the same name. Gotta love how Senoue really tried to establish some consistency through the audio of every game by remixing and revisiting character and game themes. There's a thread that can be followed through the games that he was the sound director for, and it's not just blatant and on-the-nose nostalgia pandering. Ohtani's approach had been significantly different. He mostly rewrites the rulebook for every game. Style, motifs, callbacks... They're all very different when Ohtani is at the helm. I think that the only theme he's kept going between games is Eggman's '06 theme. But frankly I think its a rubbish theme unsuited to Eggman and I was really pleased when Senoue decided that E.G.G.M.A.N. should take precedence in Generations. Tomoya Ohtani has directed some wonderful soundtracks for the series (Unleashed, '06, Runners), but I feel pretty confident in saying that Jun Senoue is the best lead the series has seen in the music department, in part because he almost always brings in a wide range of talent. Team Sonic Racing had absolutely no business having such as outstanding soundtrack. Still miss Kenichi Tokoi and Fumie Kumatani big time though...

Boy, Penders is just covering all of his usual bases/evasions today, ain't he. I particularly like how he continues to act as if these characters are entities outside of his control despite the fact that he was the one who wrote them that way. "It's King Max's Fault", like, its amazing that he honestly feels comfortable using the same logic as a little kid blaming their imaginary friend for things they themselves did. To say nothing of him neatly sidestepping the fact that the Sally Miniseries was ultimately more about Geoffrey and HIS triumph given that Sally didn't actually appear or do anything in most of it. And slight aside, it still amazes me that he doesn't actually get that the Freedom Fighters WEREN'T a military group with a stringent military hierarchy. As conceived of by SatAM, Sally wasn't in charge due to lineage but due to the fact that the Freedom Fighters trusted her to lead them. Like, even now the guy cannot wrap his head around the idea that the FF's were a group of friends trying to overcome the evil of Robotnik and not friggin' GI Joe. All this from a guy who wobbles between wanting to kill Sally for cramping Sonic's style or because it didn't make sense to have her around with her dad in the picture. Fucking hell. Bitch fit? No. Passive aggressive potshots on the other hand? Definitely.

I mean I hate to be this guy knowing full well what will come from being this guy but...yeah the majority of people consuming Sonic products are children. It's a kids franchise and frankly older fans are not that important to Sega's bottom line.

I'm pretty certain at this point he's just defending this because he doesn't want to admit (or CAN'T admit) that he's basically written a highly misogynistic and creepy character. The guy's built a self-image of being an enlightened feminist (no offense to actual feminists) creative who was wronged by circumstances beyond his control and will be vindicated with his work, and having to admit that he's nothing of the sort is too much for him to face.

Sally can't be the one taken advantage of, she's the Princess! Okay, but Geoffrey has managed to override her authority several times, and it's not like having power protects you from acts of rape. Fuck me, I really gotta get off this wild ride. NOW IT'S THE FAULT OF SALLY'S DAD THAT GEOFFREY STUCK HIMSELF INSIDE AN UNDERAGE GIRL. King Acorn is already a shit dad, but this is a piss weak excuse that doesn't help anyone. PLEASE REMEMBER, THE SALLY TAKING THE SPOTLIGHT IN THE MINI-SERIES WAS A FAKE ROBOT. Not just that, but the real Sally was captured the whole time and didn't actually do anything until the final issue. While Geoffrey and his team of who cares took the spotlight for all three issues. Holy shit, this man actually IS delusional. Get me the hell off this ride.

Okay, I had a long private conversation with him. He doesn't own Shade. At all. He's just using the fact that neither Sega nor EA/Bioware are claiming the character. "Sega has essentially surrendered those rights by not contesting my claims"... He claims he has no plans to use her other than a couple of sentences in Julie-Su's bio and a couple panel sequence in a story. Why ? "In the interest of protecting THE LARA-SU CHRONICLES". He's also stalling, taking a long time to finish the comic so he has less chances to have to give Sega a "piece" of the "success" of TLSC.
  11. 3 points
But you don't understand Zay, people on Bioware forums in 2008 said there's some similarities! Because apparently female echidna who defects from evil echidnas is so original that it warrants Ken Penders getting a co-writer credit on a game he never worked on!
  12. 2 points
That said, Geoffrey wasn't even a part of their group, was he? I thought he led another group and was just sort of helping out. I don't know, but I'm reminded of the time he took pictures of some female cosplayers without their knowledge to prove a point, then waved off the people saying "cosplay is not consent", saying that was just something they were making up.

  15. 2 points
Wait, this guy is actually deluded? I thought it was a joke or something. SEGA owns Shade by default of Sonic Chronicles belonging to them, and EA merely owns Bioware but not the game. Any official Sonic media, unless managed by an incompetent legal team, has all it's properties belong to SEGA. That includes even the echidna girl from the obscure French Sonic comic, which SEGA has never acknowledged ever yet still owns regardless. It seems to be the case that Bioware treated the Archie Sonic comics as property belonging to SEGA, which would arguably make sense considering it's based on their franchise. Because of that, Bioware took direct inspiration without caring for where the stories came from, because who cares about Ken Penders anyway? It's not like Ken Penders cares about where his favourite Star Trek stuff comes from either lmao

I do so love these moments that legitimately make me question the particular reality that Penders is living in. This is one of the most utterly deluded statements I've heard from the guy, and given the utterly bountiful crop of absurd gibberish to emerge from his mouth over the years, that's really saying something. Beyond the obvious problems of in-universe logic this would cause given the blatant differences between Julie-Su and Shade in terms of design and personality and backstory, this logic SEVERELY undermines what Penders has been screaming about for nearly the last decade- if Shade is literally one and the same as his character, then by that logic, SEGA owns K'nox and all the other derivatives he's concocted for his idiotic project. Indeed. It's a Superman and Captain Marvel/Shazam situation- there are certain surface similarities, but actual lore and characterization and design are very different. Shade is indeed a female soldier who defects from an evil Echidna Army, much like Julie, but that's where it ends. Shade was a ranking officer in the Nocturnus who was loyal to the cause until realizing that Imperator Ix was in fact evil, and she behaves as you would expect a disciplined, principled soldier to act. Julie-Su was a low level soldier in the Dark Legion who was secretly related to the Legion's leadership, and left due to the urgings of the Soul Touch, and is a hot tempered spitfire who possesses cybernetics. It is literally declaring that by deign of both being fruit, an Apple and an Orange are Exactly The SAme Thing. At this stage of things I'm pretty convinced he just likes to talk rather than actually do anything. In the 9 years that have passed since the trial's conclusion and the announcement he has produced nothing of substance pertaining to this project. Until he actually implements this, it IS just talk, and if he DOES go through with this, then he's even more of a hypocrite and a fool than we have come to believe. Tough call. This project hasn't really been released yet and Penders isn't making money. So far all he's done is made some insignificant arts and crafts projects and some very, very ugly art, but he has not in fact released his App or anything else. So far he's not done anything that'd be worth getting worked up over. It's why SEGA has done nothing, because in the end its not really worth it. It remains to be seen if EA feels the same way, but given Penders perennial inability to release the goddamned thing, I doubt they're gonna make a move just because he's TALKING about his stupid, nonsensical idea of merging Shade with Julie-Su. Also, Penders has an incredibly selective memory when it comes to the veracity of things like forum posts. When its something that favors HIS position it's fine. When it's something that undermines him, then it's not credible. He recently called someone bringing up a past instance of him conceding SEGA's ownership of his work as 'Fake Evidence'. As said repeatedly, he's a hypocrite, plain and simple.
  18. 2 points
Ken Penders' Brilliant Plan of Action Step 1: File lawsuit against SEGA and EA Step 2: Get the case dismissed twice in court and be unable to file again unless they use Sonic Chronicles' characters (which they won't). Step 3: Ignore the fact that the case was dismissed and tempt fate by using the character anyway. Step 4: Do nothing for another 10 years instead of doing the borderline dangerous thing you said you were gonna do, officially rendering this all moot. Step 5: Profit. Somehow. We have ourselves a modern J.P Morgan on our hands. By the Gods. What a brilliant business man.

Unless I'm severely misremembering Chronicles, there's literally zero similarities other than female echidna who defects from evil echidna army. She has a different personality, different outfit, and hell - even her relationship with Knuckles is strictly business. There's no romantic angle whatsoever.

I'mma tell you all a story. I've been in this community since 2003, and while I've never been part of the Retro set I've followed Retro since way back when Wai still regularly posted on it and had his name on the site title. And this release today: Is the biggest one since that Sonic 2 Beta. So hopeless was the chance of ever seeing this one that I remember a couple huge hoaxes that centered around someone digging it out of their attic or whatever and faking some screenshots for the lulz. So many blurry screenshots, vague descriptions of level layouts and off-screen camera recordings of level snippets dug up over the past two decades almost. Sparkling Zone, Clock ORK Zone, the Marble Zone UFOs, the crazy Labyrinth background art, the physics ball at Green Hill. https://www.sonicstadium.org/2021/01/sonic-1-prototype-now-available-to-play-for-the-first-time/ It's all here, and all able to be checked out by the community for the first time. I was honestly nearly shaking when I saw Tracker start posting about it on Twitter.

    Sonic 30th predictions

Kind of reminds me of the AM2R and Metroid returns situation; the "fan" remake versus the "official" one. Except in this case, Sega wouldn't really cancel it, but because of that, anything official Sega does will be inevitably compared to the fan product. It's highly likely that a Sonic Adventure remake or an enhanced port of Sonic 3 would just be straight up inferior to the DC mods for the former and Sonic 3 A.I.R. which would of course reinforce that fans can do the series better than Sega.

So seeing that the echidna tribe is alive and well in the movie universe and Knuckles is all but confirmed to be in the sequel, how much are you willing to bet that Ken is gonna throw a bitch fit about it?

"Geoffrey only started asserting his power after King Acorn came back into the mix, and he outranked Sally!" Thank goodness there isn't panels from pre #50 where Geoffrey does that exact same thing, forcing himself onto Sally, and making her uncomfortable. That would make Penders look right silly, wouldn't it? OH WAIT Archie Sonic Issue 31, in which Geoffrey spends the whole issue flirting with Sally, Sally being visibly uncomfortable at one point, and finally they end up making out! And I'm sure you can find many more through the other pre 50 issues where Geoffrey appears as well. These pathetic excuses for this disgusting relationship get more and more stupid every time they get thrown out.

I think most fans DO want a good game. It's just the idea of what constitutes as "good" tends to vary a lot depending on who you talk to :V But at the very least, I think the bar can be reasonably set at; Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Colors, and Sonic Generations. Those are like the only games almost everyone can at least agree are "good". Not great, not even amazing. Just good enough. Solid B+ games, or A- depending on how much credit you wanna give. I think hoping for a B+ game at least is a reasonable expectation...it's just that we C tier games more often than not.

It feels way more toxic today than it did back then. Could just be my perspective, but... nobody got "cancelled" back then. The mob mentality wasn't there for it. It was everybody for themself. Then Zoomers came and ruined everything. I feel like internet forums etc. back then were for the weird dorky kids who had little to no IRL friends and just wanted to discuss their favorite games etc. Now it's a popularity contest where the same normies who win IRL are the ones winning online, and that leaves us misfits with nowhere to go anymore.

I think the divide is that people wanted a smaller focused arc without any real action set pieces, and that's what people thought we were getting at first. A nice, low key arc that focuses on the secondary characters. The second it was revealed that Starline is causing trouble, and that Sonic & Shadow were going to be major characters in the arc, it was kind of inevitable that this arc being low key and focusing on other characters wasn't going to happen. And now that we're at the climax, we're in another action set piece. So it really comes down to how much you would preferred the focus to remain squarely on the girls doing Chao races, while Sonic, Tails, and Shadow would be off doing their own subplots.

I don't know if the videos are still around but I distinctly remember Archie Sonic books on a table for a dev diary when they talked about working on the game. EDIT: The one I can find mentions them alongside other stuff that was part of the "toy box" but this video doesn't show them reading the books like I remembered. Could be another one but I can't find them just yet. That said, even if the books were used as inspiration... keep in mind Penders used a lot of media that wasn't relevant to much of the comic's actual readership (stupid kids like me) as inspiration too. So if that's the root of the issue for him, he doesn't get to talk lol I don't know what it says that I immediately thought of this page

So if he creates a derivative character based on an existing character someone else created, it belongs to him. If someone creates a derivative character based on an existing character he created, it also belongs to him. Classic Penders logic in action. I'd love to see the full spider web of contrivances that occupies the inside of his skull that shows all characters belong to him.

Also Ken, just cause someone said something on a forum doesn't mean its real. I would believe Shadow was an amazing infalliable Evil God if I believed what I read on here.

Just dropping by during this conversation to say that I've been in contact with a developer on Sonic Chronicles due to them noticing the Sonic Chronicles fan remake being made by a group I work with. But this isn't some code monkey, this is the lead designer, Miles Holmes. When asked about Ken Penders, neither he nor the rest of the dev team are aware of him. Neither are they aware of the court case that happened. ken is full of shit

This is the literal dumbest fucking thing I have ever heard. They quite literally have zero to do with each other barring the very bare minimum "enemy echidna who is female defects to Knuckles' side". And also, considering Ken lost that lawsuit against SEGA and EA, I'm pretty sure that blatant theft on top of that.

Classic Sonic fans complaining the series isn't "classic" enough just got Sonic 4 episode 1, AND episode 2, AND half of Generations AND 2d sections in Colors AND Lost world pushing Classic imagary all over the place AND a third of Forces, which goes all of the fuck with the "Classic" style imitation. They got what they fucking wanted and they hated it. Yet you still see these chuckleheads on twitter And as a result they got rewarded with Sonic Mania and now they're happy. Oh. Forces was shallow as a kiddypool and got all the details wrong, just like Sonic 4 did in it's pathetic attempt to emulate Classic Sonic. Doing a half assed job attempting to please fans isn't going to make these "chuckleheads" go away, no. So Classic fans get to whine and bitch despite 7 years of pandering, yet Adventure fans need to shut up after one attempt huh? Nice. Besides, I HATE the fact that Adventure fans desire for a richer story keeps getting translated into "Make it super dark and edgy with tons of death and scary imagary. Adventure 1 and 2 are light hearted for the most part, the darker elements don't come into play until the finale when it's earned. We want the story to be rich and meaningful, which COULD involve darker elements for extra punch, but that isn't the main point. Shadow fans don't like modern Shadow, despite him being much the angry aggresive dark miserable edgey boy they supposedly like. Almost as if there's more going on with his character then just saying naughty words. Sonic Forces' dumbass moment with Sonic getting tortured (Sorry, I mean, a character randomly saying torture happened with no followup on that) is getting the Adventure games wrong on 2 acounts, both being darker then they ever were AND then not even having the balls to carry it trough and at least have the torture have a freaking point or any impact on the story to begin with. Like most of Sonic Lost World's "Edgey" dialogue, it feels like cheap overcompensation to mask the fact how empty and meaningless the real story is. And we can have endless debates how the story of the Adventure games wasn't "That deep" or "that good". You know what, I agree. They could have bee much better. So the solution is to improve, not to be satisfied with worse. That said, I agree complaining at Sega is pointless, because they're terrible at understanding feedback. So I agree Adventure fans should probably stop demanding for Adventure 3, it's just going to lead to more superficial moronic disasters. "Sonic adventure 3, from the makers who brought you Sonic Colors" is like hearing "Lord of the Rings, the Adam Sandler version". Never the less, I don't tolerate Classic or Modern fans calling us off either. Classic fans have been trough the exact damn journey, and Modern fans will probably go trough the same journey in the future after Sonic dropped down into yet another idiotic direction. Down the drain with all of us until we finally pull ourselves away from this emotional rollercoaster. Oh, there's plenty of "Sonic should be more like Mario/ Nintendo should buy Sonic" noise within the fanbase. OF COURSE what people MEAN is "Sonic should have the same level of focus and quality control as Mario" rather then "Sonic team needs to create cheap rip offs of Mario's level design, bosses and Galaxy gameplay", but chalk that up to Sonic Team doing a terrible job understanding feedback, rather then them not listening to feedback at all. At this point I tend to look at Sonic Team as if they're the The Monkey's Paw, or those other fairytales about wish fulfilling genies that always fulfill your wish in a way where it backfires on you. They WILL grant your wish. Just in a way where you wished they didn't.

Geeze. I've heard about counting your chickens before they hatch, but this entire payment scheme is more like counting your eggs before the Hen's been introduced to the Rooster. There's a LOT of assumptions going on for him to think this would work for what he's (not) putting out. Penders likes to think of himself as a modern guy who is keeping up with the cutting edge of technology. It's why he expanded his initial Graphic Novel idea into an App, since 'everyone' had Apps now. He even cited DC's and Archie's comic book Apps to justify the approach. Given how much entertainment is now subscription based, he's likely doing it because he thinks he's being 'current' and making his work 'more professional'. Unfortunately, much like the App thing, he doesn't really stop and consider why it is others are able to do this while he really, really shouldn't...
  43. 1 point
When Hasbro had Marvel making Transformers comics, it was stipulated that any character which debuted in the pages of the book became Hasbro's property. This is why they skirted that with Death's Head and Circuit Breaker by having them appear in other stories before being introduced in Transformers. (Which also led to confusion/debate as to whether Transformers was part of the main Marvel Universe, but that's another matter.) So yeah, SEGA probably could have, but apparently no one in the video game business of the '90s knew or cared enough about how to write a contract so that someone else wouldn't retain ownership that would gum things up for decades to come. Hence why Geno belongs to Square Enix and Capcom does sweet eff all with Slam Masters and possibly Rival Schools.

What I love about this headache inducing copyright stuff isn't just what a complicated dangerous minefield it is that even quick cameo's get you into trouble, but equally how easy it is to dodge the copyright laws by changing minor details. Would make me want to deliberatly use elements from all spin offs if I managed to get hired as an official Sega artist. Y'know, in an alternative dimension where pigs fly and hell is frozen over. No no, this isn't Tekno, it's Tehkno. Look, she wears a hat, this "Tekno" character I never heard of didn't. Eggman Nega? No no, it's Eggman Naugat. He's from an alternative candy dimension. Look, his mustache's shade of grey is one tone lighter then the other's. What, I used the OVA's setting of Sonic's island? No no sir, look, this island also wears a hat, it's an entirely different location. Bye now. Copyright laws are dumb. I would easily sail by every copyright law just on the merrit of being a terribly sloppy artist. "Brilliant, you escaped copyright by cleverly pretending to have spelling mistakes and get the name wrong!" Uhh, yes, "cleverly pretending", jup, that's what I did. I'm clever. Maybe that's why Sega's so easy going on fan projects. Curses, this fangame cleverly used a different shade of Blue for Sonic, they outwitted us again!
  45. 1 point
From what I've heard, SEGA's copyrights are a weird, tangled web woven by a drunken spider when it comes to their spinoff stuff. For example, due to UK law? All the characters made for the Fleetway Sonic comic that weren't originally game characters belong to the people who made them. Jon Grey and Archie got into a bit of trouble with SEGA for sneaking a cameo of Fleetway characters Tekno, Ebony and Shortfuse into crowd scenes in one issue, and likewise Bollers got into a spot of trouble for having a brief cameo of the OVA setting. Heck, part of the reason why that one explorer skin of Knuckles for Dash got such a big reception? Is because up until then it was presumed that that HAT was off-limits because technically, it belonged to the company that had made the OVA. This is also one of the reasons you never saw any of the Sonic X exclusive characters migrating over into the Archie book- technically speaking, Chris and Bocoe and Decoe and so forth are owned by the company that made Sonic X. Well, that and SEGA being disinterested in such inter-franchise cross pollination. Its why Cream and Cheese and Vanilla didn't appear for so long. Take note that this is all stuff I've *heard*. I'm not an expert, and my info doesn't come from super duper insiders. But this is something that I've consistently heard enough times for it to become clear to me that SEGA's copyrights aren't really as cut and dry as we'd like to assume. And that the nature of copyright is weird enough that Penders can evidently own something as clearly derivative as characters called 'Evil Sonic' and 'Robo Robotnik'. Granted, Penders' situation is unique, and for all the wrong reasons...

I think even at that, he's vastly overestimating how many kids are interested in Archie Sonic. I'd in fact be willing to be he's talking absolute crap, the same way he talks absolute crap when he talks about Archie Sonic being some kind of worldwide cultural smash hit even though it was literally only known in the US.
  47. 1 point
Ok...does he think Archie's still printing these? There's no fucking way he's so out of the loop he doesn't understand the basic concept of "Archie can't print graphic novels of a license they no longer have".

I don't know Ken, some of these out of print graphic novels aren't exactly being sold at a reasonable price second hand .I honestly pity any child who wants to start collecting Archie Sonic this late into the game. I can only imagine their collection would consist of randomly numbered Archives and maybe a couple of the latter issues. In comparison IDW Sonic is not only cheaper but the whole story is accessible.

I think we're skirting by the really obvious thing about the Mammoth Mogul Adventures series here though... and that's that this is really, really funny. I just can't comprehend how one brain could ever be deluded enough to look at Mammoth Mogul and come to that conclusion about him in that excerpt. I'll give the man this, at where I am in these comics, every time the guy shows up something interesting at least happens. Oh my God. I want to see that alternate universe. The one where, against all odds, out of all the characters in the Sonic franchise, fucking Mammoth Mogul is the one who takes off and has his own adventures, the likes of which delight parents and children around the globe. Sonic the Hedgehog would be digging out of trashcans in comparison. He'd beg for a flock of Mogul's hair so he could sell it on eBay for a luxury house and five convertibles. That's how much a lock of Mogul's hair is worth. I need to see Fulop posing with a Mammoth Mogul standee with his thumbs up, grinning, and a mountain of Mammoth Mogul merch behind him. I'd look at that picture every night before bed so I could laugh myself to sleep. I want to send this man an MP3 of my applause and a can of my laughter.
