Please take a moment to look over the thread guidelines as we really don't do list threads or posts here. It's also important to have a bit more context and jumping points for an actual discussion in your initial post. Not to mention that we already have a thread for this. Locking.

I'm replaying Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric for the first time in several years due to morbid curiosity. Pray for me.

i don't really feel like any story in the games is particularly great, besides maybe 3&K. the closest is probably Unleashed, but even then it's nothing too great or anything. like, there are elements of many of the stories that are really cool and/or good, but most of the time the stories range from Bad to Decent At Best

I want Adol Christin from the Ys series to join Smash one day. The Ys series turns 35 next year but it's still very niche, it would be cool if it got a Smash boost in popularity like with Fire Emblem.

So which games take place on which "Earth"?

Can I be honest? Who cares? Does it really matter what games are Earth and which ones are Mobius or Sonic's World or whatever? I'm pretty sure the intent is that it doesn't matter Sonic just sometimes adventures on Earth around humans and sometimes he doesn't. Look I love this series but lets be real it's not exactly the deepest most consistent lore.

Sonic not showing emotions has to be my biggest peeve of the lot. It's not even a matter of showing vulnerability, although he gets instantly more relatable the moment he shows fear and doubt (even for just a second), it's a matter of being expressive. If all Sonic can be is happy-go-lucky with his friends, cocky with his foes and he can only display slight variations of smiling, he's going to get boring, even unbearable, very quickly. Toei Sonic and Boom Sonic are a treat to look at simply for all the emotions and faces they go through within a minute. EDIT: Me bad

    The Animation of Sonic Games

Good vid. Only problem is that the Sonic designs are actually GREAT for expressive cartoony animation. The problem is they don't take advantage of that and try to make the character acting just look "normal".

Sometimes I forget that some Sonic fans have such tunnel vision about this series' storytelling that NFP calling Unleashed story bad legit confused some people Even though it's not exactly that great outside of presentation compared to a lot of other games

I feel like the difference is that while there are explicitly different incarnations of Link and Zelda in every game, Sonic and Co. are meant to be the same exact characters going from game to game. More Mario than Zelda IMO, but the main difference is that Mario has never once given a shit about narrative cohesion at all, even in the more story driven games. Sonic games, at least before, kind of gave the illusion of being a somewhat cohesive setting, so that's why the sudden change is pretty jarring.

Stuff like this is exactly why it's much easier to denounce Iizuka's comments until it actually becomes concretely spelled out in the games because official or not, it makes less sense than just assuming all take place on the same planet and some games just have more surreal art styles than others, or some locations look like our world and some locations are more fantastical. Tbh the "Sonic's World" comment in Colours never came off to me as anything more than a weird insistence on not using the word "Earth" in the series to keep the setting vaguely seperate from the Earth of the real world. But I can't argue that it doesn't have legs to support the two worlds thing either when "the planet" or "the world" could have equally been used (and have been in previous games). Entertaining the topic's goal though, I mostly would agree with the list in OP - when it comes to the Advance games, the presence of cities doesn't mean too much - Spring Yard, Star Light, Casino Night, Casino Park and Sunset Heights all contain fairly grounded looking cities in the background despite taking place in more "Sonic's World"-ish games.

    The Animation of Sonic Games

That's a point I'm not sure I agree with. Particularly about how he pointed to RoL as an example of this but...I don't really think there's all that much of a difference where it matters? They don't have quite as much of the "big hands" problem as some other takes on the characters and they're a hair more human-shaped overall, but I feel like most of the differences in design (Knuckles' proportions aside) are pretty surface level. And he specifically praises the facial animation but I think the faces are the least different parts of the characters and the only reason the Modern designs aren't animated as well is because they just haven't bothered. I dunno, I'm not an animator so maybe there's something subtle going on that I'm missing. Also I completely disagree with his thoughts on Boom Sonic's running animation he looks like he's just flopping around and it's real gross. Other than that it's a really good analysis and I mostly agree with what he's said.

The Aegis girls look really fun. I don't play Smash much at all anymore (I picked it up again last night and had no idea what I was doing lol) and I'm just more interested in the content that comes along with it at this point. This was special for me because I love this series and I was just so happy XC2 got its shine. I think they'll encourage me to actually mess around with the game again even if I don't have online, it's just something fun to see. I did laugh and roll my eyes at the mention of Pneuma because spoilers but it doesn't quite give as much away as a certain other Xenoblade 1 spoiler that keeps popping up, but I'm surprised they made new artwork of her because finished art doesn't exist (it wasn't in datamined materials and the art book only has sketches and a cropped version of her battle icon). Music selection also took me by surprise a bit. 16 with a few new arrangements, is more than I expected (I figured 10) but I'm happy with the choices. It's a nice mixture of field themes, battle/boss themes and even a couple scenes ("Crossing Swords" is hype). Fun fact, the track order they showed is actually the order of those tracks from the official soundtrack, which follows the narrative order with certain themes placed where they were most important if they were repeated. For example, "Counterattack" is on disc 3 following the events of Uraya when Mythra was awakened in Uraya despite playing since the first chapter of the game and is heard at other pivotal moments of the story. Also I thought this was fun Something I kinda figured with that "dark" alt is that it had to be something specific. I've seen speculation that it was based on Poppi but the colors didn't line up (the hair, in particular) and while I think it could work as a simple "what-if they were evil" kinda thing, but I think it fits together better they'd call back to Fei's Weltall from Xenogears. The one other than it possibly being the Xenogears itself is pretty cool too. I know Sakurai didn't mention it explicitly, but this series isn't above referencing and calling back to its past where it can (if not just because they want to make a copyright safe version that's distinct enough from what Square and Bamco currently have under their control), and XC2 definitely borrows elements of story and imagery from Xenogears and Xenosaga. And outright, again not explicitly called those things, but Poppi and Zeke have alt colors for Emeralda and Bart as Challenge Mode rewards so it's not too out there they snuck that in. Who knows, maybe they even asked when discussions for Sephiroth came up! I am just thrilled and happy they're here.

    The KKM

    IDW's Sonic the Hedgehog

She is an official character, that's why he posted the reference sheet. She's been pitched at Sega, approved, and will futurely be used in the recurring role of "resistance member". A secondary character to Jewel, who's already a secondary character. Still a background character, just now an officially approved one rather than a design sneaked in.

The best part of the issue for me was Tails staring in anger at the chalk in his hands. Never before has a genius mind ever looked so disgruntled and confounded by a mere piece of chalk. I hope whatever this arc does ends up giving me a mind-fuck. I could use one of those right about now.

    IDW's Sonic the Hedgehog

I do like how Evan is a bit more of a slow burner in terms of storytelling, and the focus is more on the setup than getting straight into the action. This issue served two purposes of integrating Belle into the cast, and setting up just what the hell is this Tower that Eggman has built. I'm still not completely sold on Belle yet, but it's clear they're trying to build up this mystery surrounding her origins, and Tangle is fun as usual; she's really just an adrenaline junkie isn't she. Still don't know what the deal with this tower is, or Eggman is actually trying to do, but it's just nice to see Sonic, Tails, and Amy together, a very underrated trio that is.

    IDW's Sonic the Hedgehog

Alright, #37 After last lukewarm arc and ensuing debate that wasn't all that fun, I went into this issue actively trying to be positive. And considering I had pretty bad day at work, I was in perfect position to sympathize with Belle. In brief, I'm on board so far. (But as always the case, value of this issue will depend on quality of next 3). If there is one down side it's Belle herself. She still doesn't grab me, nether personality wise or as mystery. IDK, maybe because book tries too hard to make me feel bad about her? And I really hope there is more to her backstory than "Tinker build her". Also I'm starting to question her tail-kick thing. Who design it that way? I get it that toys have functions like that, but 1) She's alive and can move on her own. 2) positioning is really uncomfortable to use unless you're a giant holding her in your hand. Lastly, only I think she's a little bit like Gold from Archie comics? She's female made by Evan Stanley, nervous, not fully controlling her abilities, tied to villain (sorta), and with mysterious past. On positive site, Tangle is great as always. It's almost unfair how she keeps stealing spotlight. Little part of my brain keep accusing her of being shallow, but frankly, she's just fun. I think it's because her optimism is really infectious. Helped by ABT's art which is once again quite gorgeous. So many background characters, great faces and there is Gadget from Rescue Rangers hidden in 1 panel. And I think the Restoration is hidden under Silver's garden, that's kinda neat. Which leads us to climax and I guess I'll finally put spoiler box. For now call me cautiously optimistic about this arc.
