Chris aside, I think Sonic X is otherwise a perfect model for Sonic in terms of tone and world. It's exciting and always with a wonderful sense of humor; the show is aware of how absurd the premise is, but is mature enough to run with it instead of constantly breaking the fourth wall and begging us to laugh. It's also not afraid to get real; it's pretty upfront about how anti-authoritarian it is. There are war crimes, homeless people, people with disabilities, etc. It's a relatable world and it's interesting and fun to see the interplay between Sonic & co. with humanity. Makes me wish characters like Topaz or even Sam Speed made their way into the games. I have a blast watching this show. And no, not the 4Kids version.

Personally it's pretty obvious to me he doesn't actually have a clue. He's just seeding the right "hot topic issues" like Classic Sonic and SA1 remake into his posts to get attention. The rest is guesswork.

It makes sense for Colors to keep the cast to a minimum. That game came shortly after Sonic 06 soured people's opinion on Sonic's friends and had a desire to go back to basics. It's more the games since Generations where it starts to bother me. Besides, as someone making my own level mods these days, I have to say adding characters with different abilities does throw a huge wrench in your level design. Boost Sonic is super horizonally focused, moving forward and needing huge amounts of space to run in. Putting a slower character in there could turn the levels into a nightmare. Check Gamemods where they put Adventure Sonic into a Sonic heroes level and you'll notice how Heroes' level design is a nightmare for Adventure Sonic as you have to slowly run across endless empty corridors. Or put Heroes Sonic in an Adventure level where he can't handle the constant twists and turns and helplessly fly off the level boundries. Putting Tails and Knuckles there who aren't only slower, but also have a more vertical movement to them because of their flying and climbing makes the entire level break down. So you either have to give Tails and Knuckles their own specifically tailored levels, in which case you get the Sonic Adventure problem again where everyone will freak out having to deal with the occasional gameplay shift, or Tails and Knuckles will just be cheap skins of Sonic with the exact same moves. (Or alternatively, only Sonic clones like Shadow and Blaze are utilized) In which case Sega will get accused of being cheap rather then praised. ...That said, out of all the Boost games, Sonic Colors does make the most sense to make Tails and Knuckles playable, considering 80% of the game takes place in platform heavy blocky 2d sections rather then in speed focused 3d area's. For most of the game's runningtime, they'll probably fit in just fine, so if I was in charge of a remake, I'd definitly consider adding them in. Especially if they're just in the bonus Gameworld levels. They'd fit in way better then Super Sonic does. I always thought it's hilarious Super Sonic finally makes his long awaited return in the game where he feels the most out of place. Hooray, I'm super fast and not able to pull of special moves in a game entirely designed around slow mazelike puzzle area's.

Even if this and/or other remasters are all we get this year, it doesn't mean that this is the sole thing they've been working on for the past few years. That would be insane. That'd have to be a full-blown remake.

Being a Youtuber focused on one specific series is probably the most miserable experience ever. I don't understand how you can make an entire channel dedicated to one specific series and think you're gonna support yourself off that, it makes no sense. Forget Sonictubers, Poketubers are just as bad. Shofu said it best, if you're focused on just one thing, you're not gonna get very far, and he's somebody who started as a Poketuber before just focusing on anything that caught his interest. BRANCH OUT DAMMIT, stop limiting yourself to one thing.

Sonic shared Elise's affection and clearly does share Amy's attraction in pretty much every modern portrayal. I don't get where this "He's Asexual" thing comes from honestly. There's a difference between not being super interested in serious relationships and being Ace.

It just occurs to me that Flanderization is meant to be neutral...but due to circumstances is mostly used negatively and therefore seen as a negative term. I'm sure there are positive cases of it...in comedy shows more often than not, but it's rarer overall.

Didn't knew SSMB had ads now lmao Playable Shadow would be easy peasy to implement, but I can not picture Shadow using HOVER, CUBE, SPIKES or running through those colorful environments with a straight face hahaha Besides, he would be nothing but a skin for Sonic, unless they change the story to fit him, which I reeeeeeeeally don't see it happening. But make Tails playable for God's sake. Sonic has a double jump, why not give Tails a triple jump or simply his signature hover ability? Colors is mostly 2D and the few 3D sections last 10 seconds, a lot of them are basic quick step lines or fully on rails. Maybe add a few invisible walls here and there, but I still think you won't be able to break out of the level with Tails, considering Colors' level design. And hell, wasn't Tails always supposed to be the easy mode since Sonic 3? Let the boy fly, goddamn it. He would get past all those shitty Green Hover areas in a flash.

Hindsight really does put a shock when you age and see what you missed. Can’t say it’s done me wonders looking back and seeing things with a clearer eye of some of the behind-the-scenes. Tho they probably weren’t entirely wrong—kids probably did like and want more of it. It’s not like kids care that much about who’s writing it compared to adult fans, unless they were just cherry-picking the Sonicgrams to make themselves look good.

I just watched the Japanese scripted cutscenes for Sonic Colors. I'm actually really surprised. I do generally like it way better, give or take a few moments where I did think the English version had some better lines (not much). However, the thing that really stood out is how much more cute, and nice, and I guess "in-character" Tails is. It legitimately stunned me how that scene where Tails was bragging about how much he did to Sonic was literally the total opposite in the Japanese version where instead of Sonic saying Tails didn't do anything (which is sort of true but still) Sonic gives him a thanks. Then Tails, instead of being a passive aggressive asshole, acts all bashful and eventually lands on saying how much cooler Sonic was than him. It's like, yeah, he's got that insecure part of him on open display in that scene and it's adorable. I guess I get anyone's desire to see him be a bit more assertive but stuff like that doesn't just go away about a person. It takes time. A sudden shift in personality just feels more jarring. I mean, how'd this happen? It's actually the scene I hate the most in the English version. I'm really stunned it was SO different. Also, the translator jokes make way more sense too, which is nice.

I don’t think it’s that easy to write off, even if I’m having a REALLY hard time believing him. He apparently gave news of Colors Ultimate to MykonosFan on Retro a good few months before it got to us. Best case scenario for him he could be legit, but I believe if he has any intel it’s probably a mix of real and fake sources. Or that he found the Colors Ultimate listing way before any of us and has been waiting on a time it was convenient to bring it up as “part of the plan” lol.

I can't speak for everyone, but I think a package with Colors with the same graphical fidelity of Sonic Generations PLUS Sonic Generations (both sharper and running at 60FPS on consoles) would be a way to set the stage for the anniversary. But this implies basically rebuilding Colors from the ground up, the cutscenes are pre-rendered AFAIK, which means they're 480p I think. I mean, it's not like SEGA haven't released a port of an old game with those ugly ass bars on the side. But fuck me if they do this for the goddamn anniversary year, the 30th no less. Shame. I think SEGA knows that fans and critics liked these 2 games well enough, which makes it a pretty safe bet for them. Hell, the Forces debut trailer used the now infamous "from the creators of Colors and Generations".

    Sonic 30th predictions

The Sonic Simulator is so bad. So so so bad. They're heavily platforming focused levels which are something like 99% 2D. Some of them are even homages to S1 levels (1-1 is GHZ1, 2-1 is MZ1, 5-1 is LZ1 etc...). But they play like total ass. Sonic feels so heavy to control and steer in Colours, and it's at its worst in the very compact Simulator levels. I hope that the first thing they do, even before graphical updates, is fix his controls. Generations controls noticeably better than Colours, but he's still heavy there too with a wide turning circle in 3D/hard to swap directions in 2D. And Forces is... Forces gameplay mantra is basically "what if Colours was bad". I'm not convinced that SEGA will improve the controls even if they try, is what I'm saying.

This is actually the reason the park is empty but I'm not sure if it was ever stated outside of promotional material. Something along the lines of Sonic and Tails sneaking in a few days early. Zippo's wording is vague enough to read this into it, but I personally don't think we're getting much more than a visual upgrade and I'd suggest anyone who thinks otherwise reign themselves in a bit. There will probably be extra content, but a ton of new levels/new dialogue they'd have to record seems like a stretch when the presumed reason this is happening in the first place is because it's a safe bet that doesn't require a lot of resources.

It is technically possible for this to be all we get if they were working on another project which was cancelled. To be clear, there's no reason to believe this whatsoever, I'm just pointing out that it could happen in theory. One of the strengths of the DS version which this remaster will presumably entirely ignore! DS really has one of the better uses of Sonic's extended cast, and they make the park feel lived-in. For the mainline version it would make more sense to say that the park hasn't officially opened yet.

This calls back to what I mentioned about how this plot has the wrong amount of details to work. Give me the task of writing Emma with the requirement that I had to keep everything from the game plot and I could add enough details to make her sympathetic. It can be hard to sympathize with overly privileged adults but children never actually choose their parents or to inherit every implication that comes with them, so maybe I'd establish that her parents are horrible bosses, and their maids take their frustrations out on Emma even though she personally never did anything wrong to them. Maybe getting to live in a mansion is the only real perk she actually gets from her parents' wealth, and she doesn't get any of it to spend on herself. Naturally, a subset gamers don't want to be inundated with plot, but the really pathetic thing here is how I could also improve the characters by taking them in the opposite direction. If they just cut out every establishing bit of backstory we got for these characters and the only insight we got into them was that they looked sad at the start of this game, then it wouldn't be a deep portrayal of depression but at least it wouldn't be controversial. Any child who has been depressed for any reason can relate to children who are depressed for an unspecified reason, but this game provided extremely half-assed reasons so instead it looks insulting for asking children to empathize with protagonists who probably have it a lot better than them. Lots of games have simple plots but it's not every day you find one whose plot is trying to be profound but fails this badly.

Archie Sonic the Hedgehog - Issue #157: System Shutdown This is a wonderful recreation of that one render of Shadow from Shadow the Hedgehog. Obviously, he doesn’t have a gun in his hand because that would be stupid and look desperate and ridiculous on the front cover of a Sonic the Hedgehog comic book. Then again, this being the era of Penders, I still wouldn’t be surprised if they went for it. This issue has quite a lot wrong with it in the dialogue department. The actual events that are transpiring are honestly mostly fine, if not a bit hastily handled for the sake of getting from point A to point B. However, the dialogue is atrocious and flat out ridiculous to the point of being funny at times. I almost fell over reading Rotor’s dialogue during the page where Eggman first landed and he was talking about treating him like any other guest because he wasn’t being outwardly hostile yet. What was Rotor going to do if he just whipped out a ray gun and disintegrated somebody? Would he be like, “Okay NOW we can fight him”. In any normal circumstances, yes, attacking someone who isn’t being hostile isn’t the right thing to do but I feel like circumstances are very much not normal when that person is a war monger that’s already skedaddled past hostility on multiple fronts up to that point with you all. At the very least, restrain him before you hear him out. Obviously he wouldn’t do this if it weren’t for an important reason but to be so weirdly lax about Robo-Hitler strolling into your backyard for a cup of sugar is insanely odd. Sonic X - Issue #28: Green-Eyed Monster, Part 1 This cover is a bit of an odd-ball one for me. There’s nothing wrong with it, technically, but I guess I’ve been so used to the heavy detail of the other covers being more in my face as opposed to transparent and way in the background that it feels slightly underwhelming to me. That makes me feel bad seeing as how it can’t have been easy making those schematics behind Sonic there. I am interested in re-reading this one though as I recall there being a two part story that got a bit more serious than these books usually did, though, still with that twinge of Sonic X ridiculousness that I love. That was rather underwhelming as an issue in and of itself but, again, the point was to build up to the second part which I at least remember liking quite a bit. That doesn’t excuse it of course. Lead up issues are usually some of the most fun for me usually but this was incredibly jumbled and padded out with a bunch of splash pages of fighting. It makes me wonder how the second part will hold up on revisit. I can see why I didn’t initially remember this particular issue though. Not much happened in it. It jumps around quite a lot and you can tell it’s hurrying as fast as it can to get to the ending page spread. The fact that Eggman just has six Chaos Emeralds without any fanfare right after a story where he got done being a wrestler just kind of says it all. They followed up one of the best issues of the book with one of the more mundane ones. Sometimes it be like that though. Archie Sonic the Hedgehog - Issue #158: System Reconfiguration I don’t want to say that the best thing on this cover is the little Eggman pin that says “Touch Me and I’ll Sue” but it kind of is. Don’t take that the wrong way though. I think this cover is really cool. Setting things up like a fighting poster is always a good way to get the blood pumping. It helps a lot that it’s drawn so well. Thank goodness the era of ugly as sin covers is pretty much over after this point, give or take a few that may slip through the cracks. Every time I hear the phrase “Fight Night” I can’t stop thinking of that awful scene with Jesse Eisenberg Lex Luthor talking about Batman and Superman fighting while he’s on the roof. Bad. Bad. Bad. Bad. Bad. It was bad. Ron Lim’s art continues to assault the eyes and it’s even worse now that I know he CAN do better so now I’m taking the horrible art as a personal offense. Neo Metal Sonic being reduced to this doesn’t satisfy me as a fan of Heroes and with regards to the unnecessary change in his story within the books, it barely registers as something that makes sense. The design of Neo Metal Sonic does not jell with his origin as a robot created by the heroes and it sticks out so much that he’s been reduced to just a grain of sand amongst a bunch of other identical grains of sand, fated to get washed away by the ocean next issue and then forgotten about. What else would you expect from yet, another one of the GREATEST THREATS WE’VE YET FACED?!!! Next week, I’ve got a really busy time ahead of me because not only am I covering the last Ken Penders led issue of this book (FUCKING FINALLY) but I’ll be covering the first issue of Ian’s run on the book. It’s about to get BEEFY and insanely nostalgic for yours truly. Stay tuned.

    Sonic 30th predictions

I'd argue that Sonic has always had a steeper learning curve than other platformers because of its core mechanic having been about slopes, rolling, and momentum. It was and continues to be wholly unique as opposed to how jumping, stopping to assess where to jump to next, then jumping again has become a universal language and expectation in game design. So there's always been a higher barrier to entry with Sonic than other platformers; Sonic Adventure was the logical next step mechanically, but the added dimension added new layers of complexity that continued to define Sonic as clearly apart from the norm. So they've made the games gradually easier, more automated, with fewer margins for error until we arrived at the boost formula which finally stripped the core mechanic of the series away entirely in favor of something simpler and more conceptually focused, though I think we may have different definitions of "pure." I'm happy for Colors fans and anytime a game is made more accessible is a win, but I understand where the agitation from certain sections of the fanbase is coming from. Colors marks a clear turning point into the current era, which has been so preoccupied with alienating itself from Sonic's original core that it's left the fanbase wondering what Sonic even is anymore, and anxious about what it could be. Of course, pragmatically, it's Colors is a logical choice to port forward. I just wish we could get back towards fleshing out those core elements again. Here's hoping.

The fundamental problem with writing rich people is that they have way more tools and are in a better position than the vast majority of people to deal with their own problems. It's effectively a superpower in its own right, and fiction writers often underestimate that by just treating it as a character quirk. The better examples are characters who don't have much control over their own lives despite their wealth, but one still has to deal with the fact that lower class folk often have the same problems without the safety net that wealth brings. In the case of Emma and the maids, the social class difference between them also makes me instinctively side with the women stuck doing the domestic labour.

Not really. Some unused voice clips, a few unfinished Sonic Simulator layouts, nothing much of interest. The biggest thing is the fact that the acts were split up.

They said that Paramount found smart ways to not increase the budget exponentially, which is probably where Hawaii comes in. Using that to cover a lot scenes involving Sonic's world. I listened to the whole podcast, and I do like the attitude they both bring to the project. Their idea of cool is very spectacle focused, which definitely works for Sonic. Nothing superbly intricate, which is fine. I dont want this sequel to become an overly complex mess. I especially like how they have so much freedom. I'm guessing most of the toning down will just be for budgetary reasons if we run into those for the sequel, so hopefully this insures we at least won't be getting out of touch execs involved in process. So far the progress seems promising. The quick turnaround between the first movie and second shows that a lot of this situation is going more straightforward this time around.

    Sonic 30th predictions

You're making sense, but I don't think any Sonic fan is obligated to give a fuck about SEGA's finances/rep, especially these days where they seem to do fine in both departments whether Sonic is in the picture or not. It's really NOT a big deal when an underwhelming Sonic game comes out anymore. Forces wasn't a big deal. TSR wasn't a big deal. Unleashed wouldn't be a big deal. They string fans along with references to the "untouchables" across all of their media all the time. They can afford to polish out some kinks on Unleashed and do a reissue. Capcom does it with their bad games often enough for everyone to understand it's not some big risk. The cost for the whole thing shouldn't be understated, but it's still low enough that niche fans can make up the difference.

Take it like this, you wouldn't expect SEGA to remaster Black Knight. Now while Unleashed wasn't as... let's say divisive, in the fanbase, it still got panned by critics the same way. It's not about fan demand, it almost never is. It's about what makes sense business wise, and Colours makes a lot of sense, even if it's not what I personally want.

Sonic Colors actually makes a load of sense for a remaster. It was a very critically acclaimed game when it released (people talked about how much it broke the 'Sonic Cycle' and whatnot) and holds up rather well, but also desperately needs that graphical boost in the 2020's. It's ten years old, and is not available on anything other than the Wii and DS. I've heard people asking for Unleashed to get ported, but I don't think folks really have considered how much it was thrashed and trashed on release, so no clue why you'd think SEGA would mess with that. Additionally, I was able to download it on my fiancee's Xbox One for $20 and play through it (until I couldn't stand it anymore) so it's not like it's unavailable to consumers on relevant hardware. Colors needs some serious polish in a few areas, but it's art direction is gorgeous, the good faith it restored in the franchise is undeniable and it can only benefit from being brought back into focus, especially after Forces unceremoniously wet the bed and became the latest "bad Sonic game" of the generation. The modern branch of the series needs a pick me up.

This prior statement is a fallacy and you know it! ------- Anyway....I can add somethings to this topic that I've been unlucky enough to notice. The internet seemed pretty chill in the 00s and the slow and expensive version we had in the 90s is a damn sight more preferable over the bowel sludge social media fuck fest we have now. Groups of freaks with no empathy or social skills looking to destroy anyone that dare say the slightest thing they deem as controversial. Censorship destroying creative story telling, complicated issues being reduced to "it's a race/gender thing." Suicide rates in the UK and US constantly getting higher with each passing year. I don't even know the numbers for last year but with the virus being prominent, I can believe it would be higher again. Comedy is dead since one of its principals was surprise. Now that you are no longer allowed to hurt the feels of others, you end up with bland, predictable "something." It ain't comedy, just..."something"... At some point, somebody thought that Twitter spoke for the world and what is said their is how real people feel and think. That has never been true and I'm thankful that data exists to support that theory. Now I'm seeing common talking points from Twitter enter the mainstream media in the UK. ...Oh great. Let's bring in talking points from a website where discussion goes to die!! To top all this off, a consistency that I've noticed is still being maintained, despite certain media claiming otherwise. Mental Health is still for the most part, being ignored. A perfect example comes from the usual place for stupidity, Twitter. So some people believe that white people don't know what it's like to be discriminated against and so should not have an opinion on it. Unfortunately, I'm white, but I also grew up fat and autistic. I know very well what its like to be discriminated against!? This is why I strongly dislike complicated issues being reduced to one thing or another. It'll never be resolved that way because at most it can only be partially true. Other issues will remain which were being ignored. Having big tech companies climbing down from their ivory towers to claim they stand for diversity and inclusion is also a fucking joke. The only colour they care about is green, never forget that.

I guess I'm probably odd duck in all of this. I'm not particularly annoyed by my current internet experience. Its mostly because I don't actually interact with people outside the few circles I'm in and nobody really cares about me so its mutual. I managed to put on a filter and ignore pretty much the world, well I guess the English speaking world if I'm being honest. I don't know what's trendy or what's a meme anymore but that's fine because I don't really care. I just like keeping to myself and everyone is giving me my space. Yeah I did ran into a few bad apples randomly but it wasn't anything serious. They just try to put me down and leave. At this point I'm just using social media to follow my interests and my friends that I made over the years. But that's just me. I can be a social butterfly at times which does contradict what I just said but I just don't really pay attention to whatever is going on in the world and I'm happier not knowing.

I don't really think it's fair to say it was rushed. From what I've seen, the game itself is finished and completed, the problem is the game was built on a very, very faulty structure from the offset. Problems like the one-button gameplay, the boring and tedious level design, the limited mobility of the characters, the wasteful nature of suits, those are not issues of time and budget, they're conceptual problems that shouldn't have been there to begin with and yet make up the very core nature of the game. The levels are built around these faulty costumes, and their incredibly simplistic designs. The first level alone requires several detours with costumes in order to reach the top of a series of ledges for example. The game didn't need a simple delay and polish, it would've needed a literal overhaul from the very bottom because the game's issues are constructed right into the heart of the game itself, and everything, everything was designed around those problems. Square-Enix have their share of issues, no one's denying it. But I'm not going to pin the blame for the game's design issues on them. They gave the budget, and time to Naka. They told him this was his one shot to make this platformer he wanted to make, and Naka and his team were the ones to blow it. They were the ones who came up with the game's design, they were the ones who came up with the games' concepts, and the gameplay. They were the ones who thought these problems somehow equalled out to a good experience for a player. Put simply, Balan's problems aren't issues with budgetary or time constraints, they're problems baked right into the design of the game by the very people designing the game, and as harsh as it is to say, unless Square for some utterly bafflingly idiotic reason ordered Naka to do this, which is doubtful since Naka is well-known for simplistic game design and controller layouts, it's on the team who designed the game to be like this. The people who thought from the start this was a good baseline for building a game upon and let it be the building block that the rest of the game's design comes from. I hate to say it, but they were given a shot to make this work, and they missed the mark by a landslide.
