IDW's Sonic the Hedgehog - Megathread

I mean, Silver had a good reason to be in Forces: he is of the distant future, and Forces' premise has Eggman take over the world. So it stands to reason that Silver would travel back in time in order to prevent the bad future Eggman undeniably causes. Blaze, who lives in an entirely separate dimension, was not affected in the slightest and thus would only get involved to help her friends. And we can assume that circumstances prevented her from knowing about Eggman's takeover to begin with, among any other excuse. Silver, on the other hand, wouldn't have an excuse aside from Eggman doing whatever to prevent his birth.

Shadow can beat Knuckles. He just didn't. Losing a fight to someone doesn't mean the person he lost to is just automatically stronger than him or even that he'd necessarily win in a rematch. Sonic has lost to Eggman before. Does that mean "Sonic can't beat Eggman?" Obviously not, he beats Eggman all the time. And yet, sometimes Eggman still squeaks by with a win. Losing a fight says nothing about Shadow's strength or the strength of the character he lost to. Don't look too deeply into it.

    Thoughts on RWBY?

RWBY fans are essentially in the same category as most fans of "unpopular" things like Kingdom Hearts and Sonic; they've been bullied for so long about the stuff they like, any sort of criticism they get is met with immediate vitriol. So I just avoid them altogether. I stopped watching this series a long time ago due to just getting bored.

They have no more stories they want to tell with the Master Emerald. And they could've avoided this narrative dead end by keeping Angel Island in the water and saying that it's entirely powerless outside of cancelling the Chaos Emeralds or they could've destroyed it after such a story focused on it.

making a replacement character for knuckles misses the point guarding the emerald isn't a job, it's a duty and part of his identity he could have tails devise the best safe ever to protect it, but his duty isn't "make sure master emerald is safe", it's "be there to protect master emerald, the last element you have of your culture" I get wanting to see more of knuckles but this is the sort of thing where like with shadow openly talking about his emotions, is "fixing" a problem that doesn't exist by just making the character entirely different. "man, darth vader is cool, it's so bothersome he's evil so he can't have adventures with luke. what if the emperor made a new darth vader to take his job, and darth vader's a good guy now and always around to be in adventures?"

If they need to create a character for the purpose of subbing in for Knuckles on Master Emerald Duty I say just do that. Again post reboot Archie had Relic and Fix It (who to be fair were pretty worthless in combat but it at least have Knuckles the excuse to bail) so I don't see why they can't just do that again. Or just give him a Dinosaur

From what I seen on this forum, Knuckles role as guardian seems like one of most controversial topics. It's pretty much impossible to satisfy both sides. And neither side is technically wrong. It's just question what idea has more value: having Knuckles around or keeping him "true" to his job. The way I see there are several ways that to include Knuckles without breaking character - Something could be happening on Angel Island. When was the last time Knuckles was there to protect ME from thief? - Some ancient ruins that must be checked and only Knuckles will know how. I think he would spare a minute for high importance treasure hunting. It could be connected to ancient echidna if necessary (if Sega won't allow it, whole thing can be a trap). - I think overall if situation was really import, Knuckles would shrink ME and carry with him. Mind you, it would have to be something super important. - Someone could straight up kidnap Sonic and few of his friends for his amusement. Kinda like Grandmaster from Marvel. Or down right they could be stuck in another dimension, like Sonic X did - Give Knuckles his god damn dinosaur. Then he can take a break. The hardest problem is how to get Knuckles for something casual, like race or a party. The only way I see it if the event was on Angel Island.

As much as it might suck on the surface, that's exactly how it should be. Blaze, Knuckles and to a much lesser extent Silver have circumstances that demands that they stay away from the main narrative. Just throwing them into any old narrative does a disservice to both their character roles and lessens the impact from when they do eventually make their returns. Honestly, both Blaze and Knuckles have been given exceedingly important roles in the screen-time they have been given. I think that's a fair trade off to being MIA for longer stretches.

@Wraith I mean even then, that story's focal character is Whisper while Tangle is there as emotional support. And more to the point, that was literally two years ago lol. Since then, Tangle hasn't really done all that much. She gets moments don't get me wrong, but I'm definitely not mad she doesn't have to play second fiddle to big star characters in the next arc. Anyway, I find myself mixed on Zeti Hunt; its not a BAD arc, but I feel like aside from the last issue...nothing really happened? Zavok finds the Zeti, they attack, Sonic & Tails beat them and send them off, the end. The only bit of character exploration happened after the fight was over lol. Think this arc would have been better served if more time was dedicated to the Zeti themselves as opposed to the Heroes, and make them fight Tangle and Whisper. There's nothing really gained from focusing an entire issue on Sonic fighting them again, even if it did look good. Have Tangle and Whisper hang in there and let Sonic have the save if they need to give him a big hero moment.

I mean, yeah, kinda? I personally prefer cast members having a purpose and getting proper spotlight if they're going to show up in an arc. The Chaotix showed up and did nothing for three issues, and then ended up getting the run-around to show off Starline in Issue 4. It was kind of lame imo.

What would your ideal Sonic Comic look like?

Honestly most important things is simple "quality, be good". but that's not creating a discussing. So here are few bullet points 0) General "good things" Just basic stuff everyone can agree on. - Sega lays off mandates - no half finished artwork - no delays, etc. - And of course more books. I feel 3 tittles would be optimal: Sonic, Shadow and Sonic Universe. Maybe with annual special for other continuities, like Boom or Classic Sonic. Of course more would be always better, but even Shadow comic is just a wild dream at this point. 1) Sega Sonic at center, everything else around it. As much as I miss Archie, I'm glad focus is back on game characters, not Freedom Fighters. I just like this guys way more. With that said games alone can be a bit bare. I still want to see Nicole or Sticks or Scourge. So ideal scenario every single Sonic continuity would be used to make one huge and exiting universe. From Boom and Movies to Fleetway and OVA. Everyone's invited. Especially if we have more than 1 book. 2) More diversity in writing We love Flynn, but I want other writers from time to time. Admittedly with only 1 book, even 4 months without Flynn felt like eternity, so it loops back to wanting more books. Like every second Sonic Universe arc could be by some new blood. 3) Bring Back "Off Panels" I sometimes miss them 3) Crossover with My Little Pony Hey, you asked for "ideal", so I'm indulging myself. Preferably as separate miniseries. 4) Take just a liiiittle more risks I like the comic the way it is, and after Metal Virus I can't accuse Sonic of playing it safe. But I know that Sonic could been even more daring. We live in age of Steven Universe and Infinity Train, it would be amazing if Sonic dared to tell stories like that. And I know that Sonic is bigger IP and stuff, but Transformers "More Than Meets The Eye/Lost Light" exists and it was sublime Now, all those points can be condensed into 2 thoughts - General wanting MOOOOAR. Off Panel, other, tittles, crossovers, etc. - Bigger diversity in writers, characters, themes, topics.... especially if we have MOAR. Because then we can spare few stories on taking risks. Lastly, going too far with my wishes would be bad as well. If Sonic would have 12 tittles mos of us wouldn't be able to afford them. And while I have gripes with writing, I like the current general tone and style. I would like Sonic to gently push the boundaries, not to cross them entirely. I don't Sonic to turn into Ultimate Marvel comics, where Spider-Man needs 8 issues to for his origin story.

It already existed Really that's my boring answer, it's not perfect but post reboot Archie really just hit all the right spots for me, a big developed lived in world with a huge colorful cast having many unique adventures. Plenty of game character focus on top of characters from all walks of canonicity ON top of really solid original creations like the Egg Bosses, Relic the Pika and Fixit, etc. If it weren't for shitty ass World's Unite wasting everyone's time and messing up the pacing of the ongoing Unleashed adaptation I'd call it almost perfect

  26. I know you guys must feel like things are going about a hundred miles an hour with the good ol' SSMB this past week, but it's all in aid of some urgent and very important maintenance upgrades that are long past due. After our forum reshuffle and the inclusion of a new feature, we're going to be spending some time working on some heavy upgrades and maintenance on the forum software. For you, this might mean the following potential effects: Member Maintenance: We will be going through our backlog of members to determine what sort of data can be culled in order to improve site performance. Don't worry, this will not impact any active SSMB account. We will only be looking at user accounts that either have suspicious historical activity, or who have not yet logged in/are stuck in the verification process (and have no record of post/login activity). What this potentially does mean, is that if you once registered an account with us and forgot about it before verifying (or you got stuck, gave up and registered again successfully) then that user data - including assigned email addresses and other user information - will be deleted. Major Theme Disruption/Rollbacks: We will be making some major upgrades to the forum software over the weekend. This might mean a significant amount of downtime, but more permanently this is likely to mean a temporary rollback of the current forum design to a default InvisionCommunity theme. This probably isn't what a lot of you want to hear (I have definitely noticed the confusion over the lack of the Sonical Dark theme - that honestly was an accident and not planned), but it's an absolutely necessary step for us to take before we can take the SSMB and TSS to the next step of its evolution. There might be more unforeseen issues that occur as well - so please bear with us as we do the necessary behind-the-scenes work to improve things for you all. As I've said about sixteen times already this week... 'Pardon our Dust'.

What would your ideal Sonic Comic look like?

Post-Reboot Archie was essentially everything I wanted and then some when I didn’t know I had it. It checks off everything: -retooling old characters into new roles, particularly because the reboot made it necessary for some, and for others like Scratch, Grounder, Breezie, and Coconuts who hadn’t been seen in years being put to modern use with up to date designs. The Freedom Fighters, King Acorn, Prof. Von Schlemmer, etc. -Solid worldbuilding: it could have been much better, I’ll admit. But we had defined settings, geographies, cultures, and factions within the world. I find things much better with more defined settings with places to explore and revisit, as well as unknown regions that we (supposedly) would have explore later on, mainly taking the setting of Unleashed and making it the main world the characters live in, with history among the factions within, rather than vague locals that we’re not really supposed to know where they’re located. -It was welcoming to anything Sonic, whether it was from AoSTH, SatAM, to the games, along with new characters. -And characters that would likely be deemed useless actually had better utility that even I didn’t think was possible, like Big the Cat joining the main cast (did not see that coming, but he was well utilized that I welcomed it). That and it brought back a few one-shots like Tikal and Chaos to play a role, even if minor, during the Unleashed adaptation. My personal favorite was the Egg Bosses and Egg Army. Most Sonic media had Eggman strictly with machines, with maybe one living henchmen. Here, he still has his badniks, but now he has a semi-loyal following of flesh and blood, cybernetically enhanced minions and generals whose abilities go beyond what we normally see from his forces. From having his own Pikachu, to a contingent of Ninjas, Eggman had something he never really had anywhere else, the top dozen of which are basically his own personal supersoldiers at his beck and call (with some safeguards to prevent any possible betrayal). Now, I can imagine something somewhat better than this, but as far as my ideal comic, Post-Reboot Archie was where it was for me. And it sucks it had to go the way it did, but IDW did provide somewhat of a glimpse in spirit to what it could have continued to be, even if it falls short. If there was just ONE thing from Archie I’d bring back, a gun to the head choice, it would be the Egg Bosses. (They’re tied with Sally and the gang, but I have more hope on them returning in some fashion than Egg Bosses like Conquering Storm)

I'd like something that dives into Knuckles' character. He's spent a decade and a half surviving alone of an island with nothing but the ruins of a fallen society. Did he ever know his parents? Did he come into this world alone? How did he learn to speak or of his role as the Guardian? I'd love to get a story that focuses on that, maybe something that brings back Knuckles' friendship with the Chaotix? I'd like it to mostly be about his backstory and character but I like Knuckles having a villain of his own like Finitevus to drive the action and push the actual story forward. I'd also have it embrace game concepts like rings, shields, Warp Rings and Star Posts.

What would your ideal Sonic Comic look like?

Essentially post-reboot Archie, but without any legal limitations or Sega mandates. So not only do past Archie-exclusive characters get incorporated into the new world, but they even have access to concepts from any other branch of the franchise, including Sonic the Comic, manga, etc. Just like with anything about the reboot, concepts are extensively re-imagined, of course. There's plenty of lore from the pre-reboot Archie Sonic comics which needs to be altered significantly or abandoned entirely. For example, on a base conceptual level, the Dark Legion seems great to me - a group of evil cyborg echidnas? Sign me up! But the execution had plenty of issues. And the Dark Legion would be their own thing again totally separate from the Egg Army (i.e. "Dark Egg Legion" is strictly not a thing). It's also rather important that we have the "old Chaotix" back, including Knuckles, Mighty, Ray, and Julie-Su (can't say I care too desperately about Saffron, though I wouldn't hate her being included either). To be clear, I don't think the post-reboot's way of doing things with Knuckles, Mighty and Ray, and the Chaotix being three separate entities is bad, it's just...the old version of the Chaotix (whether that be just with Mighty and Knuckles added, or with Ray and Julie-Su added too) is special to me in so many ways.

What would your ideal Sonic Comic look like?

Post-Reboot Archie is probably the closest example to my ideal Sonic Comic. Its not almost completely divorced from the games like in the pre-reboot, but its also not slavishly following them to the letter either like IDW. They had just enough creative freedom to tell good stories but still respected the foundation laid by the games. IDW has the potential to be better, but I can't see that happening if Sega are constantly breathing down the creators' throats and since IDW is more directly connected to the games, they can't make any meaningful changes or progress that could potentially contradict them unless it's approved by Sega. Its way too corporate. That's not to say Ian Flynn or Evan Stanley haven't been trying their best under these limitations, but that's always going to bother me.

Here's the thing, though... He had listened to Sonic earlier, and in his mind at that moment, listening to Sonic was what caused the current situation. So it made perfect sense that he wouldn't, in that moment. He regretted it later, but Shadow's actions in the zombot arc were all in service of Sonic's character arc through the whole book up til now - questioning whether he was right to give Eggman a second chance. That's still the overarching plot, it's even brought up again in the newest preview pages. It's Sonic's book, not Shadow's, and Shadow's part in it is there to serve Sonic's. He's the counterpoint to Sonic's actions, and the nagging doubt in Sonic's mind. And it's been done pretty well, imo.

Sometimes I wonder if some people played a different Sonic series where this isn't who he's always been since his very first appearance lol. I just think back on Sonic Battle, where's he all "I don't need your help" and then passes out from his injury and Rouge has to carry him back to her house. Or Sonic 06 where he needs Rouge and Omega to rescue him from the future because he was too impulsive to go through the portal, leaving him trapped. I've seen how quickly this thread gets derailed any time Shadow shows up, so this is the last I'll say about it, but I think Shadow's done a lot more than you say he has in IDW. He did help defeat Neo Metal after he messed up, he evacuated a lot of people before he became a zombot, and I haven't read it yet, but isn't he the one who rescues Clutch's Chao? It just always seems like it's never enough. People won't be happy until Shadow is the star of the book, and every plotline ends as soon as he arrives. It's weird. I guess that's what he gets for being such a popular character.

Cream is generally coded as being a child, and one that hates violence at that. In a straight up fight, and if she really wanted to , she could probably give him a run for his money. Like, everyone is on a relatively even playing field, but there's pretty clearly some characters on a higher tier than others, even if that's really not that noticeable. Like just because let's say: Sonic, Shadow, and Knuckles are on Tier 3, doesn't mean the likes of Amy or Cream, who let's say are in Tier 2, couldn't beat them.

IDW's Sonic the Hedgehog - Megathread

No, it's actually been very consistent. Most games Shadow appears in begin with him doing the wrong thing and later admitting his mistake, just as he's been doing in IDW. SA2 - tries to destroy the world, realises it's wrong Battle - tries to destroy Emerl for most of the game, realises it's wrong Shadow - Gives the Chaos Emeralds to Black Doom, realises it was a mistake 06 - Releases Mephiles from the scepter, spends the whole game trying to fix his mistake That's Shadow's general arc, and whether he loses or wins fights is all in service of furthering that. EDIT: Oh, agreed. But that's the point, Cream is the character you'd expect to be weakest, because she's canonically a pacifist, but she can kick Shadow's butt in both Heroes and Battle. The characters are all kinda designed to be on equal footing.

You say "even Cream," but like. Cream's a powerhouse, and that's even before you factor in Cheese. We don't know how hard she can hit, because she's never attacked directly before, but that girl can lift Big the Cat, who weighs 600 pounds. But yeah, offense-wise, Cream's basically a beastmaster rather than a direct combatant - and that's where her strength lies. Cheese probably has maxed-out stats and can dish out a cartoonish amount of damage, shredding through Eggman's mechs in the Advance games like paper. She's the "easy mode" character for a reason, and that reason is she's crazy overpowered. Don't underestimate the bunny.

Yea, contrary to popular belief, Shadow DOES tend to overestimate his own abilities sometimes. ITs just that he was generally able to back that up before; they just started leaning more into his overconfidence actually being a BAD thing recently. You're looking way too deep into this dude. Like Mechano said, a character losing once does not reflect that they would always lose in the same scenario. Like, if Shadow kept losing every single conflict he got involved in, I'd say you have a point but that's not the case at all. Sometimes Sonic beats Shadow, sometimes Shadow beats him, sometimes Shadow can't beat Knuckles, but that doesn't suddenly mean that Knuckles is better. Conflict is not a binary case of "Character A beat Character B, but Character B beat Character C, so therefore A is stronger than C"

IDW's Sonic the Hedgehog - Megathread

It's Sonic. Anybody has the potential to beat anybody. Knuckles is stronger than Sonic, but Sonic's faster. Either one of them could win - depending on choices in battle, as well as other mitigating factors like environment. Another example: Sonic's more physically powerful than Eggman, but Eggman's smarter, and has - at times - beaten Sonic before. It's not always about pure power. Or just look at all the playable character/team battles in the Adventure games and Heroes. Team Dark can beat the Chaotix - or the Chaotix can beat Team Dark. Both outcomes are possible. The goofy trio of detectives can - under the right circumstances - best the Ultimate Lifeform, the killer robot, and the seasoned jewel thief. Honestly? It's best to just kick back and enjoy the action. Not knowing who would win, not taking it as a foregone conclusion, not expecting your favorite character to steamroll every opponent every time is good because it actually builds suspense. Who knows who'll win the next fight? Certain characters may have slight advantages or have better matchups than others, but it's still anyone's game. And that's how I like it.

  48. I think the idea of Angel Island being on either planet isn't terribly difficult to reconcile; it's a bit of an unsatisfying hand-wavey dismissal sort of explanation, but I would write it off as Angel Island existing in its own interdimensional flux between both worlds. See, considering that it's the home of the Master Emerald (the properties of which weren't explained beyond powerful rock that controls the Chaos Emeralds in some fashion) and is so imbued with that energy that the entire landmass is floating extremely high in the air, I think it's an easy way out. Honestly, same goes for any of the other islands that Sonic explores during the classic era. It's not a well-known piece of lore, but South Island isn't actually on any map, because it moves around on the ocean. Islands don't do that: this is because of the power of the Chaos Emeralds, according to the Japanese story manual. I think any island or landmass that's had long-term exposure to chaos energy could reasonably be found in that sort of interdimensional flux; giving a potentially sufficient explanation for South Island (or at least the Green Hill portion) being in the human world in SA2. [spoilers] The actual answer is that they didn't think this through in the beginning and Sega/Sonic Team doesn't actually intend to fix any of this, so Sonic canon is currently a nigh irredeemable mess, so best not to think too terribly hard about it, though this is fun sometimes.[/spoilers]

  49. In fairness to the Green Hill in SA2 thing, it's an unlockable cameo in an anniversary title from well before the series started marketing its goodwill on remembering the good ol' days. It's probably not meant to be seen as "canon." "Two worlds" is a more recent development that we don't know how or if it actually had any bearing other that Sonic Team trying to find a way to explain why they didn't want to use humans anymore beyond "06 and Unleashed got bad reviews so we're paring as much back as possible in terms of world building."

  50. This would limit how they could explore Sonic's world in the games. Probably, at that time, Sega believed that people wouldn't ask for these elements to come back in the future. Let's be real, the Sonic fan base is weird and schizophrenic. People change their minds about what they like in the Sonic series all the time. 10 years ago, Sonic Colors was treated like it was the best 3D Sonic ever made and Sonic Unleashed was treated like garbage. Nowadays, people say Colors is weak and one of the worst games, and Sonic Unleashed is beloved and treated like a masterpiece. Part of the reason why the Sonic's lore is so fluid and inconsistent is the fan base's fault.
