IDW's Sonic the Hedgehog - Megathread

Cringe culture is stupid and immature, and people have a right to care about representation. :u It matters to a lot of people, and I think especially for a book targeted at kids, it's good to have more cool female characters. The Sonic cast has always had more dudes in it, and I think it's neat that IDW balances things out more while having a good range of characters. Anyway, I also think "only male hedgehogs can go super" is stupid. Especially when Knuckles, of all people, should at least be able to transform given his ties to the emerald. ...Plus, a super Amy would be awesome.

Yeah why would anyone want more female characters in a franchise? Women existing is so cringe. *eyeroll*

As with any "creator answering behind the scenes stuff", sometimes stuff that was already in development gets hinted at as just "hmm, wouldn't that be nice to see".

IDW's Sonic the Hedgehog - Megathread

I'm a bit wary about "representation" because sometimes the whole "inequality" part isn't that bad or feels like part of the aesthetic/charm, and if not done right the newly added features may stick out like a sore thumb. IIRC in a Bumblekast Ian was saying they were adding more female characters to balance out the male-dominant cast, but was surprised & said it was complete coincidence when asked why all the new Good guys were girls and all the new Bad guys were male (which a lot of readers noticed). I think that was when Belle & Clutch was introduced (last year?). He was saying there wasn't any upcoming female villains at that moment, but if he was to make one it would be a ground-level villain who will fight Sonic directly/hand-in-hand instead of removed/ruling from the top. That and he'd want an irredeemable one that let girls know they can be as bad as boys. And now we have Surge. Which makes me wonder when/how fast it took to create her...?

    Thoughts on RWBY?

Motherfucker I've watched this show as it aired since Volume 2 and went to every single theater viewing and would have gone to more if they kept doing them. This is the wall of my apartment: These are some hats that I regularly wear: Here's my home release collection: Here's (coincidentally) my current phone wallpaper in the cycle that happened to be showing when I took those photos: If it wasn't pouring ass rain out right now I'd go take a picture of the two RWBY plushies that have been hanging from the headrests of my car for 5 years, so this picture with one of the seats pulled out will have to do: I offered specific criticisms with specific examples of the problems that the show struggles with, so you can miss me with this "true fan" bullshit. RWBY was never good enough to justify people diving on swords for it like they do now when it's pretty bad; and the fact that people insist that it's just so super fucking deep that people don't understand it like you're trying to do here is probably directly related to why it and the fans of it gets criticized more harshly than random Summer anime 2020.

IDW's Sonic the Hedgehog - Megathread

This exact discussion happened like 100 pages ago or something like that, thought I'd reiterate my thoughts to add to the pile: While I think Sonic, as a franchise built for and aimed towards boys, has no obligation (because of that) to have expansive female representation, it absolutely doesn't hurt, and I fully welcome it. The female representation though, whether small or large, should still be respected and not shoved into meaningless, derogatory, and stereotypical roles. I honestly think it'd be better to have 10 males and 0 females than 10 males and 1 female who just gets used as the "girl character."

Sonic is a series coded more for boys at the end of the day, so its demographic leans more towards that. Don't think its a coincidence Amy gets the least amount of attention of the "main" characters and tends to be stuck playing second fiddle to the boys. And she's the franchise heroine, and for better or worse, her defining trait is loving the male protagonist. Not exactly good representation. I don't agree with altering her entire personality, but I get why they did it because having a female character be mostly defined by their feelings for a male character is simply not politically correct in today's climate. Unfortunate but understandable. The other females, even Blaze, suffer from a similar issue. Rouge in particular was way more sexualized in her initial years before they toned it down.

IDW's Sonic the Hedgehog - Megathread

One of the ways the Sonic brand feels a little dated to me is both the lopsided gender ratio and how those female characters are presented compared to their male counterparts. I think anyone who gets their hands on it is probably going to feel tempted to address that and IDW is the "best possible scenario" where they kept most of the existing women the same but just added new ones that filled different niches. Even if you don't really like it you're lucky that IDW is worked on by people that like these characters. Sonic Boom saw it fit to change Amy's entire personality because compassion is boring and girly I guess.

  11. This whole divide between the 2000's and 2010 eras of Sonic is mind numbing to me tbh. Legit had someone on Retro tell me that the reaction to Forces from the 15 to 25 year old of now Sonic fans isn't that much different from how the same age bracket of fans felt about Shadow and 06. But I just can't see the latter in the same way I see the former. I'd rather play 06 than Forces but then others feel Forces was "fine"

If your immediate instinct for how you can contribute to a topic of discussion is assuming that everyone who disagrees with you on it is so fucking stupid that they just don't get basic concepts like you do, and you double down on that even when people go at length to explain their problems with it, it's probably for the best that you only discuss that thing in echo chambers.

    Archie Sonic Main Discussion

...Maybe I should sit this one out then because honestly I kinda think it's Ian's weakest story and shows a loy of my least favorite qualities of his as a writer. Namely that it's too fucking long. Yeah...but I honestly kinda think they make for a better couple and genuinely kinda wish Sal took Ken up on his offer but eh what do I know? THANK YOU! I swear I once ran across someone who told me that Scourge being a complete unrepentant dickhead doesn't make him Sonic's perfect opposite. Ok I know Iron King is from an Asian inspired continent but I can't not read him as Michael Dorn. It's just like...he's the perfect choice IMHO. I kinda love the fact Lightning just is a Ninja now out of the blue. Kinda fits with Espio having to be retconned after years of not being one. I mean that's kinda the point. You aren't supposed to know what they're talking about until the backstory starts getting spelled out in later parts. Y'know Ian started making fun of the use of mind control because people on Bumbleking were teasing about it but really outside of Enerjak I am hard pressed to think of a time he or really anyone ever really relied on mind control in the book. Hey its Jamal Peppers debut! ...I'm kinda hot and cold with him honestly. There's nothing wrong with his art but his art is one of the few times I can agree with people on the art being stiff. He's very on model but that comes at the expense of dynamic action. Geez! Say what you will about Steven Butler but the man knows how to draw some crunchy hits. I can just feel that looking at it.

What would your ideal Sonic Comic look like?

The rouge situation is interesting. If you ask me personally I think her being a morally gray character in some instances is good. This was posted in the IDW shadow topic but Evan's Analysis of who she is in relation to shadow and what they do for each other in my opinion is accurate summation and what I think is best for her character. She helps shadow calm down from time to time, and shadow despite his disposition is a pretty nobble and good guy and it helps her be a nicer better person. For me , its very easy to believe that when her angsty heroic fuddy duddy friend isn't around she gets up to a lot more interesting and morally dubious stuff. However this isn't how the fanbase views her, I'm reminded of Treasure Team Tango where Ian tried to do this and it was met with so much vitriol that he never did it again. And a lot of depictions of rouge is more of this teasing older sister figure to a lot of the character or a teasing flirt who ultimately means well than anyone who can genuinely be mean or have ill intentions. Its similar to the situation with silver where as the character the fanbase made him to be over time is how everyone sees his character and how eventually sega started characterizing him as. Rouge hasn't gotten to the last stage, I don't know if they care about her enough to do that, but I see similarities. For me this is frustrating. Some of us are aware that sometimes a character could not be used to their fullest potential like aforementioned fuddy duddy, and people say that the issues are how the character is really supposed to be. And its a frustrating argument to have because a lot of it is left up to the interpretation of other person who might potentially just be arguing in bad faith. I believe however this is actually a situation where rouge's character might be better with these flaws but the fanbase doesn't care for it at all, and she ultimately ends up character who has nothing going on for her because she isn't around enough to really have her skills utilized. I suppose there's at least the recent sonic channel story and character explanation where she is described as " a character who's ultimately a good person but you have to watch out for " which I think is accurate to what her character actually is and would produce an interesting character. All that said rouge isn't used enough in games in ways to facilitate this for any of that matter. Partially because sonic team just doesn't care about the lady cast as much as the male cast. So I fear this opportunity for rouge to actually be characterized in an interesting capacity wont be used in the games or the comic for various reasons even though with fuddy duddy mandates being extremely conducive to rouge working by herself. So you are left with a character who is just around who flirts doesn't have much of a character outside of that. Occasionally she has intel , so i guess he can also spout exposition, fantastic character

There is a difference between being an Antagonist and being a villain though. Rouge is being antagonistic in those scenarios but once actual villains start trying to conquer the world or universe she teams with the heroes. I really don't think a lot people actually get Rouge as a character.

Ian did touch on this, the Team Dark idea at least, he said as long as there are these strict mandates for Shadow, he doesn't want to do that, he feels there wouldn't be much freedom, and right now he doesn't want to include Shadow in any stories, Evan on the other hand might try. Still, I would love it, if Shadow can be himself and not Vegeta. I don't think right now is the best moment, it would have made sense in Archie Sonic because there was a lot of set-up for GUN, with Snively and Madonna, etc. but sadly it was cancelled so, I don't think it would be a good idea right now since GUN or the human world haven't been touched at all. If anything yeah, a human world focused book with Shadow, Team Dark and GUN? I would love it.

I'd love a miniseries from the current crew focusing on Tails unraveling an interplanetary mystery. Feel like that'd be a nice way for the current crew to give him some love, especially given that Sonic Team really won't care about what they do with him. Plot setup in simple: With Sonic/Blaze and Eggman duking it out for control of the Sol Dimension, responsibility for the main planet falls to his buddies from IDW (Jewel, Amy, Knux and possibly Shadow). This thus leaves Tails with nothing to do. However, a tsunami hitting Central City after Angel Island falls into the sea reveals a god-awful truth: The Emeralds have gone missing. ALL OF THEM. In their place is a longitude-latitude code written on the back of yesterday's newspaper: 42.3601° N, 71.0942° W. Inputting this to Mobius reveals nothing... but then Tails applies it to the data set of another planet. One which they've been banned from after a hellish, offscreen draining of all life during the Lost Hex crisis so long ago... The results are exactly as he feared. The saving grace of Mobius... lies on Planet Earth. (MIT, to be precise.) And only one fox, itching for something to do in Sonic's absence, volunteers to go. His party includes Kit (Miles' new friend that no one else trusts) and then Cream, stowing away aboard his Space Tornado against her mother's wishes. Happy for the help, the three kids land in Boston and then get to work... unaware of the plot for multiversal dominance that the Institute's new guest lecturer, one Dr. Starline in the virology department, is cooking up next. Flynn, Yardley, and Stanley present: IDW's Miles Prower. Issue #1 of 10 hits newstands summer 2022.
