  • Shigeru Miyamoto Teases Sonic in Mario Kart

Ever since Sonic Adventure 2 was confirmed for Gamecube, we have heard a number of rumours about how Mario and Sonic will one day join forces in the same game. And now we get a fresh tease, only this time it's come from a more official source: Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto himself!

During a press tour in the UK, Miyamoto mentioned that he is hard at work on the next entry in the popular Mario Kart series, and SEGA's blue mascot could end up joining the roster.

"The situation is that we are having a series of meetings about Mario Kart for Gamecube and we have come to the point where we will be making some drastic changes to the last games," the legendary developer said. "Sonic the Hedgehog might be one of the drivers!"

Quite how realistic this comment may be remains to be seen; Miyamoto is well known for getting excited about these kinds of ideas, after all. So we're not holding our breath until we see it for ourselves.

Miyamoto also apologised to European gamers for the delay of the Gamecube launch in the region (it's launching in May 2002 on these shores). "We could have launched GameCube into Europe in March of this year, but we didn't.

"We are sorry that we are late in introducing the GameCube to Europe, but, we really wanted to have the right amount of hardware and by delaying the launch until May we are able to stock enough machines to be able to sell 500,000 consoles on day one."
