Yes, Sonic had a great 2022. That said, although the Sonic franchise played a large part of SEGA's 2022, it wasn't the only one. Remember, SEGA is more than just Sonic. The SEGA Genesis Mini 2 launched, for example. There were also games released for Total War, Football Manager, and Hatsune Miku. Meanwhile, Two-Point Campus also released. It's a lot of games, and yet, SEGA did so well that Metacritic even acknowledged them as the 7th best publisher of the year!
You see, every year, Metacritic releases a ranking of how publishers did on the site in the previous year. This is determined by the average review score the publisher got during the year. SEGA got an average Metascore of 79.3, which was enough for them to make it to #7 on the charts.
It's actually very impressive that they managed to do this. They managed to chart better than Nintendo, Bandai Namco, and Square Enix. They were even just .3 points away from doing better than Capcom, and .6 points away from doing better than Take-Two!
Of course, this doesn't include the SEGA Genesis Mini 2. Metacritic only includes games in this, so hardware is not going to be among them. Obviously, it also doesn't include any reception to Netflix's Sonic Prime. Still, that doesn't make SEGA's achievement on these charts any less impressive.
Nevertheless, SEGA could always do better. In fact, they have done better in the past. They were actually in the #1 spot a few years ago! It's quite a turnaround for a video gaming company that had published Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric not even a decade ago. This year looks to be another good one for SEGA, but time will tell whether it's good enough to do well on Metacritic.
