  1. *learns that One Piece was taken off Toonami last year not because of poor ratings, but it's more likely that Toei hiked up the cost for the broadcasting rights for the show to more than Adult Swim was willing to pay, and I think it was already higher compared to other shows on the block* I don't think Toei realizes that although the One Piece series is pretty much a crown jewel in Japan, it's not like that in the west and they can't make it as expensive as they want over here. I sure hope they weren't charging A.S. more for it than they were for the Dragon Ball shows. A.S. probably laughed them out of the room/ off the phone.

Especially when they have other popular anime that are airing. Honestly, my opinion on Toei is knowing declining over time.

toei was probably like "fine, we'll take our big show elsewhere, good luck with what you have left"

*A.S. looking over at DBZ, Attack on Titan, Gurren Lagann, One Punch Man, Kill La Kill, My Hero Academia etc:*

The thing that doesn't make sense is that AS has not just one, but two DB shows.

It's not that the licensing costs for One Piece went up, it's just that the costs were already high and the show wasn't doing well enough to keep it around. It probably was one of the more expensive shows, but the issue was it couldn't do well in the more competitive slots like 11-1AM and therefore was airing at 2:30AM, but at the same time it still likely cost the same or close to the same as it did when it was airing earlier. That's a lot of money for a show that clearly struggles to find an audience. Not really arguing though, your post is on point that Toei expects too much out of One Piece given it's history stateside. Love the show to death, but I've long reconciled that it simply isn't as popular here as it is other places.

Tbh I kinda wanna see them try the show out on Netflix. I know it's already on Hulu, Crunchyroll and Funimation's streaming service, but Netflix seems to be the most mainstream service that everyone has imo.

The anime is less popular here for a lot of reasons, but the biggest is probably that it was constantly interrupted and changed in terms of broadcast with no "complete" TV run, and the point where it started to get one was already too late, with other (and let's be honest, better) adaptations taking the helm of popularity, and was too far behind the sub version to stand as an alternative.

I think if One Piece ever gets a remake with good animation and pacing and a proper localization from the get-go, it'll be way more successful in the states than before. Nothing about the series itself is to blame for it's lukewarm populartiy when compared to other shonen of it's era.
