Thirsty Pocket got a reaction from Dr Ryan in Why is the japanese version of SONIC X better?
Well... I liked the show. I largely prefer the Japanese version, but subtitled, is very hard to find... then again, it's been years since I looked. I looked on youtube a few months ago, and the sub seemed like they used babelfish to translate an winged it with the corrections. Unwatchable. I wouldn't even know where to begin looking for a good sub nowdays ( although it's been a while since I tried... maybe I will )

I can't tolerate the music changes 4kids made, and some of the censorship was too much. Some of the added jokes made my skin crawl...

Anything they did to Sonic X pales in comparison to what they did to OnePiece though. "YO HO HO HE TOOK A BITE OF GUM GUM"

Oh yeah definitely. Those short little bits in Sonic 2 definitely got to be the fastest Sonic's ever gone in 2D, I think.

Since you can just find rings spinning suspended in the air. and usually in groups, why is that currency? You don't work for it, you don't earn it you just... pluck it out of the air... or hit the switch in station square over and over for infinite rings? (  I guess this question goes out to Mario, Zelda, and any other series that also has money just floating around )

Do small animals talk too or is it just the bigger ones like Sonic and Co? What's even the difference between Sonic, The small animals in the Eggman machines, and other animals like froggy and the huge crocodile of frog forest? I seriously want to know the nature of Sonic, and the other talking animal's race. And what their relation to humans, and the smaller, dumber animals are. I mean they obviously can have a working relationship, seeing as how Rouge worked for the president. But we've yet to see any NPCs outside of Rush Adventure, which was in a different dimension anyway.

Was black doom always just a floating torso or did something happen to his legs? The other black arms have legs so... ?

My pet peeve, and I may be the unpopular opinion here, is the artwork of Sonic and co. that's drawn deliberately grotesque, for humorous effect. I never thought it was very funny, and I'm not one of those fans who can't take a few jokes at the expense of my favorite series or anything. I just think it's lazy humor that's not very humorous. Then again, some people's disgust for it is probably what makes it funny to the people who make it, so I guess that's mission accomplished?

Bloom is a horrible way to hide how graphics really look in a game. They oversaturate it to make it look better, but it's just so bland. Every screenshot I see of this game, the objects just pop out. When I look at Gens or Unleashed (Good looking as they are), I see muddy colors with a lot of bloom.

And why is being "Pixar-Esque" a bad thing? Pixar films are praised for being some of the best made and most beautiful CG films to date. If anything, that's a total compliment, and their art style is a perfect fit for something like Sonic.

I'm pretty annoyed that nowadays if a game is bright and colorful then it's consider kiddy and childish. Honestly I think more games needs to be colorful because there's not that many games like that out there now and I don't want the Sonic series to jump on the bandwagon and try to 'fit in' with all the mature super serious titles that are out now.

Thirsty Pocket got a reaction from Snowragnarok in Recurring Villains
I love it when villains can be as notorious and lovable as the Batman Rogues gallery. There will always be the number 1 ( Joker ) But the other villains can usually be an equal, if not bigger threat, and just because they aren't enemy numero uno, they are treated as if they are by the hero, and are loved by the fans instead of only thought as side characters ( Penguin, Riddler, Croc, Ivy, Harley, Mr. Freeze, ect. )

...Forgive the strange comparison... but I would love it if all my favorite game series had reccouring villains as lovable and well done as Batman's rogues gallery.

Dr. Robotnik should always be enemy number one, but it wouldn't hurt to see Metal Sonic doing things out on his own, or the return of Grand Battle Kuku and Witchcart ( I hate both those characters, but they could be re-written and designed to be much better... hey, it worked for Aran Ryan in Punch-Out!! ) Fang... well I never really saw him as a villain, but more of a thief who got mixed up in things and had to Fight Sonic and Eggman for his treasures.

Rouge, Omega, and The Babylon Rogues had potential to be villains, had they not completely walked the hero path... sort of... kind of... Not the pure evil villain, but the villain that's....well...hard to explain... They do not all that evil things... but it's seen as something the hero has to stop... i don't know.... ( more batman comparisons: Catwoman )

Really off topic feel free to ignore this part of my post, but I really wish this idea was also applied to my other favorite game series...
Mario (sticking to the mainstream that is... ) has Bowser, and lots of one shots that could have been great recurring villains, but most of them were scrapped, never to be used again... ( The only exception being Birdo and Tatanga, and even those two don't get much action.. and unfortunately, Fawful as well...) ...Then there's Zelda, that took a step in the right direction with Vaati and Dark Link, but they are still just puppets to Ganon in the end... I better stop myself here before my post is more unrelated than it is...

I explored every inch of the games that I could back in the day. Speedrunning was definitely not why I played Sonic. So I discovered the Knuckles thing the first time I ever got to Sky Sanctuary ( years after it was released. )

So here's something. Remember Rouge's mission to get the chaos emeralds out of Security Hall in Sonic Adventure 2? ...and for some reason there were dollar bills inexplicably floating around above the fans? You'd think the first game to feature "The President" would have a president on the dollar bills, but rather, Sonic's Face is on them bills. I tried looking for a screenshot, but couldn't quite find one. But I spent a lot of time trying to see it.

If I HAD to redesign Sonic, the only thing I would change about him is his constant scowl. You'd think his head were actually a perpetually scowling cowl similar to Batman in the movies, with the angry lines built into the front.

...And maybe it's just me, but I miss his Soap Shoes.

I rarely let Spiders into my fortress. But when they do get in, I almost freak out, but I make sure to keep my wits about me, as I know that I need to kill it before it can find a place to hide. If it is able to hide, then I won't ever be able to know for sure where it is, and that is not an idea I like. Unfortunately I failed, as I was cleaning some fuzzies out from under my entertainment center, I saw an ugly brown spider lunge at my finger. I pulled it away and the beast retreated back under my entertainment center. Now it's out there, in my room somewhere. I don't know. I hope it stays there and never moves. Because really, I don't know if it's keen on biting, or if it's poisonous or not. Sometimes I find myself turning the light on randomly at night, and looking around, or brushing at my arms because I think a spider is nearbye... I got the phobia really badly...

The only Spider I am cool with is the Daddy Long Legs, which are quite common, but harmless. They just look like dots with 8 long hairs that they use to walk with. Despite that, I wouldn't ever touch one, and they still creep me out, but I let them live, unlike other arachnids.

Speaking of Arachnids, Scorpions freak me out almost more than Spiders do. But thankfully the only scorpions on my town are in pet shops... I hope. My mom brought a dead scorpion home in a cup once, after working at this crazy arabic Doctor's house, which apparently has all sorts of crazy animals in the back yard that aren't native to our country. She said the scorpion was alive when she got it... I asked if she was insane, and why she thought I would want such an evil animal for. The thing was no bigger than my thumbnail though.

Thirsty Pocket got a reaction from AmethystIsFIT in Favorite Sonic couples
I was once obsessive over couples in my video games. It's one of the things I care about the least now, but I still can't help crack a little smile if I find a cutscene that supports my favorite pairings, even if just a little bit, and I always will have my preferred coupling.

I used to ship Sonic and Amy. Right now, I'm starting to think Sonic never will have a romantic relationship, and he never will want one, and if he does, it will be when he becomes much older, and Amy may or may not still be waiting. She's a young girl and they tend to rush into relationship. When she gets older, some one else will probably sweep her up, or she may be available, and still feel for Sonic. I couldn't see Amy getting feelings for any one else in the cast, and Sonic seems to treat the other female characters the same as the male characters ( unless they're fighting )

I can't say I ship Knuckles with anyone. I'd like to think that he would only be interested in a romantic relationship if it were with another echidna that would understand his gaurdian duties and even help him with it. That said, the only other female echidnas in the series is Tikal, and she's long dead, and Shade. I guess Shade would be my most logical choice to ship with Knuckles, but I don't see her high tech style fitting in with Knuckles primitive ways.

It's hard to tell if Shadow would ever be interested in a romantic relationship or not. He didn't seem like it in any of the games, but in each of those scenarios, something more important is going on. Maybe if ever things settle down around him, he'll contemplate the idea. I can see things working with him and Rouge easily, she clearly cares for him very much.

I can't really say I ship any other couples in the series. Tails shows no interest in anyone other than Sonic really, I'm going to conclude that he's too young to be thinking about a relationship. Perhaps when he gets older he may get eyes for some one. Perhaps Amy, but by then she may have won Sonic over. I'd like to think that Cream meets some one not affiliated with Sonic or his co-stars, when she gets older. I think she'd look cute with Charmy, but they have no connection what so ever.

I also think the Babylon Rogues annoy each other too much to consider anything there.

I normally don't consider any shipping outside of the Video Game canon, and when I do, it's hard to ship anything other than what I already ship in the games. But I adored the thing Eggman had going on for Ella in the Sonic X comic, it's cute, when I don't read the comics in her voice... I'd like to see Eggman take an interest in some one in the games though. There were lots of women his age in Sonic Unleashed. Maybe he'd prefer to build his ideal lady instead... I don't know. Maybe he's not interested.

I'm glad this place can be so civil compared to other places. If this were a Zelda forum I'd get flamed to hell and back.

Didn't care for this one much. I feel Sonic Advance 2 laid the foundation for ruining handheld Sonic, and Sonic Rush Cemented it. This was just a step up from Sonic Advance 2, but with some poorly done team mechanic. Really they should have just had switching off, like the hack, Sonic 2: Heroes.

I am actually pretty dissatisfied with it.

I was happier when it was a platformer with occasional bursts of speed, rather than a high-risk-of-crashing/falling racing game with occasional bursts of platforming.

They seem to have also banished anyone who isn't Sonic, Eggman, Tails, or Amy to dimension X or something. Part of why I liked the older games was the various playable characters (optional or otherwise ), and character interactions.

...That said, I really really enjoyed Colors and Generations 3DS.

Thirsty Pocket reacted to BlazingTales in Light stories and why I believe they suck
Light heartedness =/= painfully simple. It's possible to have a light hearted story that still is engaging, epic, thought-provoking, and shows character growth.

For a fine example of that, I point you to the following...

This is the type story is what I want Sonic to strive for. The characters were interesting and likable, there was a feeling of urgency, and you always felt like you were doing something for a reason. But it still managed to occur in a cartoony, fun universe. Definitely what I want out of Sonic.

Thirsty Pocket got a reaction from Lamor in What Events Made You Proud to Be a Sonic Fan?
Had quite a few, but here's one I recalled just now...

I was staying with my Dad for the week. All I had with me was my Gameboy Advanced, with Sonic Advance and Pokemon Sapphire. I loved Sonic Advance, still do, it's pretty much the closest thing to Sonic the Hedgehog 4 that isn't Sonic 4.

Had to go to school. Came back and couldn't my GBA. Asked me dad and he handed it back to me. "Here you go bubba. I beat your Sonic Game." He says. He's not much of a gamer, so I doubted him. Told me he played as Sonic. And I checked my Tiny Chao Garden, and my Ring count jumped up considerably... So I took his word for it.

So yeah, he doesn't play games, especially Sonic, but he beat Sonic Advance while I was at school. Made me happy.

I like Amy's design too. There's a lot of cool looking redesigns of her out there but often they end up looking really cluttered. Her current design has a really nice sillouhette and is very striking - just like a Sonic character design should be. Her classic design had a really ugly palette.

A lot of redesigns tend to give her trousers too or make her look almost punk-ish, but I like her in a skirt. She's a really girly girl so it suits her.

Am I wrong? Oh yes there was rolling.
I'm not trying to be sarcastic or undermine the classics at all here. I have a huge respect for them and believe them to undoubtedly be the best the franchise has ever seen. However, I don't think they're deep. Their brilliance stems from their simplicity. You can do a lot with very little and it was all fluidly designed. Maybe you misunderstood me, or I misunderstood the classics, but that's what I see.
A very simple platformer, with some very, very good physics and level design.

Maybe good physics and level design constitute depth to you, but it doesn't to me.

Thirsty Pocket reacted to Scar in Are you happy with the current direction of the series?
I'm not really looking for "depth", though.
Level design in Generations wasn't really intricate until Planet Wisp and that didn't even last very long. However, I will say that it was fun. I don't really know what "depth" means in terms of platformers, because there is little more than running and jumping involved and it really can't get any deeper than that. An increase in complexity and intricacy of platforming and level design doesn't not correlate to an increased depth.

Sonic games have never really been "Deep". In fact I'd argue that the simplicity really is what makes Sonic games what they are. Sure level designs got more and more complex and intricate, but the way you had to go through them remained simple and "Shallow", that is to say running and jumping.

I think the word that best describes it is "elegance". The classics were not deep. All you did was run and jump, that never changed at all. Flying and gliding added no depth, it was still running, jumping and pressing the jump button again when you were in midair. They were however, complex and elegantly designed.

Generations was fun and about as deep as the classics; that is to say, you had to run to a goal and jump on platforms. However it wasn't as elegant or as complex as the classics. It was a really rather weird combination of really, really rapid forward movement, and then really slow platforming. Or if you could abuse physics and the boost, constant rapid movement (which takes more skill than one might think). This was partially because Sonic had two operating speeds, there was rapid forward mode and slow movement mode. There was a phase between, but it didn't last long enough to be of any use.

It was fun, I found it fun as all hell actually. More fun than Sonic 1. That is until the final boss.

Whoever says that Sonic has become a Mario clone needs to examine the gameplay a little more. While, the gameplay has become less Sonic-y, it doesn't mean its become more Mario-y. Heck even Colours feels totally different to any Mario game I've laid my hands on. Even after all the changes, the two are still highly incomparable and they only ever are, because of some fabled rivalry that existed some years back that some people still talk about.

Sonic was more than just a Mario clone, and he still isn't a Mario clone.

Thirsty Pocket reacted to Riverstone in Are you happy with the current direction of the series?
This is my opinion really as well. The main problem being that running is actually quite plain and it doesn't really allow for anything else to be satisfying.

Generations: You run in straight, flat ground. To me, even the slower -platformy parts felt slippery and very floaty. Almost as if the wind was pushing you. jogging around the open spaces was hard as sonic kinda forced you to go into a straight line once speed built up. and it builds up quickly too.

Sonic adventure, you ran on ground that curved around on different angles. Massive hills that curve down and up and left and right. Around poles, little islands, all around the sand. All blended into 'jogging' around slower part of the levels. I really like how the top speed in those games were more rewarding and not the basis of the entire game.

In simple terms, In the adventure formula, it wasn't just running. It was a majority of jogging with some extreme running at selected parts. And it allowed for simple maneuvering and a natural flow of movement. It was satisfying being in complete control and tracking across every bit of varied terrain.

Who else wants them to bring back 'Jogging' sonic. Full speed sonic should be provided at certain sections.

Boost and quick step can go die in a hole. That's your hollow point right there
