  1. Rouge knowingly participates in the bombing of Prison Island without even covertly warning any of her fellow government employees, letting everyone there - her comrades and countrymen - get blown up for the sake of her top secret mission. In a way, proving that GUN is still just as corrupt and callous as they were 50 years ago.

Of course, she's framed by the narrative as an overall heroic character in the series despite this.

Rouge was owed a favour by a wizard and he teleported everyone off safely.

Wow.. never thought about that before.

If nothing else, Flying Dog's pilot is definitely dead. He was still there in the room when Rouge was Chaos Controlled out.

      That guy's dead.

That whole thing always kinda bugged me. Really questionable writing there.

@PC the Hedgehog To be fair, a lot of SA2's writing is questionable.

I think as a secret agent, doing questionable things for the sake of the mission is par for the course for that kind of life. She probably couldn't afford to blow her cover regardless of what she felt.

I guess informing the soldiers stationed on the island would risk compromising her status as an undercover agent. She has to remain cloak and dagger after all, despite being an anthropomorphic bat.

      @SenEDDtor Missile

Well, sure. But then it strikes me as weird that she's so tight with Shadow then. You'd figure corrupt government agents who are willing to kill their own people "for the sake of the mission" would be the type of person Shadow despises.

Like, yeah, he was in on it too at the time - but he was vengeful and genocidal, and his judgment was clouded by hate; Something he ostensibly got over. Rouge, however, never had any epiphany where she realized she was wrong or regretted her actions. In fact, they're never called into question once.

@Dr. Mechano You do have a point.

The best way I can figure out how that might have turned out is that Shadow during SA2 probably did see her as another part of the corrupt GUN machine, and probably didn't view her as anything except as a means to an end. However, he's also conflicted with his own inherent better nature, hence why he still saves her despite her possibility death on Prison Island.  He might have chalked that up to a moment of weakness and thus was less willing to be swayed from his initial mission of mass genocide, but after Amy manages to jog his memory, he ultimately does choose to put his better nature and Maria's desire over his own hatred.

Meanwhile, Rouge does start off as a heavily amoral agent willing to do anything to help herself and the mission, but her interaction with Knuckles and Shadow begins to make her question her own methods and mindset, and later on ends up deciding to try to be a better person as a result, even if her past as a secret agent would make it difficult.

Granted this would be better if it had been shown in story, but that's the best I can come up with on short notice.

I mean, he saved her because he needed the Chaos Emeralds. Which he needed to destroy the world. Which would have killed Rouge, himself, and everyone else.

I don't think he was actually concerned with "saving" her on Prison Island; He did that because she had the Emeralds.

Sure, he cared about her in future games, but not at all in SA2. It doesn't make sense with his plans to literally destroy the planet.

Like I said, moment of weakness. He DOES need the Emeralds, but he also could have just grabbed those and left her, but his own better nature did leak through Gerald's programming, even if only for a bit.

I pretty much see Shadow as being torn between fighting the programming Gerald put him under (and his own personal hate) and his own better nature throughout SA2, hence why what you might see as a contradiction doesn't bug me too much.

An interesting approach to Rouge came up on Clement's Let's Play of Sonic Adventure 2:

      The comment in question:

I honestly dont think Rouge gives a shit about the earth. I think she was just in with the military because shes highly greedy and just wanted jewels and money from them. I believe she wanted in on Eggman and Shadows shit after getting more into her mission and realising that all havoc could break lose and she enjoyed that. She liked that power and planned on taking control of the ark and the emeralds for herself after Eggman did his thing cuz hed be to distracted to notice her plan in action

Maybe not the part with hijacking Ark, and it might not be the intended view of her, but I'd say it otherwise works to address her actions.

I guess Rouge could've been playing a Xanatos gambit both sides.

"If Eggman loses, I can just fall back on being a government spy and say that I was investigating him, collect my hefty paycheck, and go home. If Eggman wins, I'll get a sweet position of power in his global empire."

Obiviously Ark falling towards Earth throws a wrench in her plans.
