  1. Man, if someone hacked Sonic Spinball into just having normal platforming levels where you have to use Sonic's jump and spindash to get around it'd be the most delightfully clunky thing ever.

  3. Y'know, for someone who's supposed to be an incompetent idiot, Scratch is probably one of the most difficult bosses in the entire Sonic franchise. And he beats you with quick-witted puzzle-solving, no less.

  4. Mania gives us a quirky squad of bosses with fun designs and - even with no dialogue - personalities.

    Spinoff games just keep using the Deadly 6.

  5. I'm frustrated.

    There's a video of a much better "Eggman in Sonic 1" hack that actually has collision with enemies,  NOT "Eggman the Dictator" where he ran through every enemy and the game crashed when you hit spikes.

    But the download link is broken. If anyone knows where to find it, I'd be SUPER thrilled. Video below.
     

     

  6. In Sonic Boom: Fire and Ice, the bot-racing minigame displays character portraits and position icons that correspond to the robots you play as (i.e., Sonic for Sonic-Bot, Tails for Tails-Bot, Amy for Amy-Bot, etc.) I guess the implication is that these characters are in some way controlling or piloting the robots in question.

    Anyway, Dr. Eggman is used for the various boss robots, as well as the aptly-named Eggman-Bot. You're directly controlling the robots, but the iconography shows your "player" as Eggman himself.

    I'm not sure if I should count this as a playable Eggman appearance. Like, you don't play as Eggman directly, but it seems like you're playing as Eggman "playing as" his robots? Does that count?

  7. Honestly, as many oddities as Forces' story had, my favorite will always be: 

    "I've taken over the world and established the Eggman Empire. Anyway, now I'm going to crash a fake sun into the world I've already taken over, and build a glorious new Eggman Empire on its ruins!"

      Eggman got Infinite to warp reality in a way that made all of Eggman’s ideas as effective as he thinks they are. By the end of it, it’s clear Eggman has gotten very carried away with his imagination.

      (Real talk though, I like to think Eggman’s motivations in Forces were sheer boredom and dissatisfaction. He realized that, well, actually winning kinda sucked and what he really wanted all along was the authentic kind of attention and action that his oppressive empire actively impeded by forcing everybody to approve of him and curbstomping the opposition. Like, maybe he initially wanted some empire to honor his grandfather and force people to accept the Robotnik family genius, but finding out that his grandfather wanted to blow up the planet destroyed what he just realized was his only reason to actually succeed at building an empire. 

      But he’s too prideful and theatrical to just give up his empire peacefully and quietly. Hence him stalling and making bad (but flashy) judgements when he had several key opportunities to crush the resistance for good.

      Heck, maybe that’s why Infinite dimension-walks out on him. Infinite eventually figures out that Eggman doesn’t actually want to win the war and won’t really let him burn the world, which doesn’t line up at all with what Infinite thought he was in for. So he spites Eggman by taking away everything that kept the resistance from victory, denying Eggman any further conflict and ending the war.)

  8. Is it theoretically possible to hack Sonic Advance 3's playable Eggman into normal levels?

      You basically have to hack Super Sonic into normal levels since he's more or less Sonic's accessory during the final boss. Eggman's practically useless without him.

       

      You could try putting him over the CPU character, but I doubt the Tag Team actions would work.

      Eggman is playable directly as player 2, though yeah, all he can really do is charge up energy rather than attack directly.

  9. Dr. Robotnik replaced him with brand new robots and stuck him with a menial job that he resented. Thus, he became obsessed with proving himself superior to Robotnik's other creations.

  10. In Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, holding left or right on the second controller disables the CPU's ability to manually drop Beans.

    This means Robotnik actually is semi-playable in MBM???

  11. Shadow's relationship with Eggman is super weird.

    Of the heroes, he sways back and forth between being a lot more respectful to him than the others, to being a lot more violent and angry at him than the others.

      It’s like the world's most awkward and potentially volatile family reunion.

      Eggman does genuinely like Shadow. Eggman sees Shadow as his cousin and about as close to his intellectual equal as a non-Eggman individual can get. But Eggman resents how Shadow’s only friends are a rogue E-series robot (Omega) and a spy working on behalf of GUN (Rouge), since it means Eggman can’t trust Shadow with anything he doesn’t want a traitor or government agent to potentially find out about. That and Eggman is extremely disappointed that Shadow is not on board with the whole Eggman Empire thing, because from Eggman’s perspective, Shadow has no reason to be opposed to that.

      Whereas Shadow does appreciate that Eggman apparently actually likes and respects him. Eggman is still family, after all, and Shadow hasn’t got much of that around period, let alone much of a family that actually values and doesn’t want to murder or exploit him. But he finds that Eggman can be overbearing, obnoxious, and horrifically unethical, not to mention that he doesn’t see Eggman as capable of leading a small town well, let alone a global empire.

      So I see Shadow trying to be polite with Eggman. But Shadow also sometimes loses his patience with Eggman’s big personality and bigger ego, not to mention that he doesn’t trust Eggman’s leadership or like Eggman’s conquistador  ambitions. Whereas Eggman is trying to be a good cousin to Shadow, but still has a lot of trust issues and ideological conflicts with Shadow that often prevent them from resolving conflicts civilly and building a close relationship.

  12. Boom Eggman is the least successful of all Robotniks as a villain, but he's also probably the happiest.

    He has friends, hobbies, a surrogate "family" who genuinely loves him, and is actually liked and respected by some of the villagers.

    It's honestly a little heartwarming to see an Eggman with an overall happy life, even if he is a joke villain.

  13. Y'know, Super Sonic regularly appeared in the comics and in Sonic X. But we never really see any of the other game powerups in adaptations, do we? Shields, Speed Shoes, Invincibility Monitors, etc. could probably have some cool utilities in stories, but they just never come up.

      In a lot of early Sonic media, it was implied if not outright stated that Sonic’s shoes were what allowed him to go so fast. If he had no or different shoes on for whatever reason, then depending on the adaptation he’s either as fast as a normal hedgehog (not very impressive) or incapable of running fast without seriously hurting himself. 

      So I guess you could say that speed shoes were in early Sonic adaptations— they were just a part of Sonic’s usual outfit, and thus rarely anything worth focusing on.

      Ah yeah. I think in AoStH, Sonic was naturally fast - but his shoes absorbed the friction of his super speed. And without them, he'd burn his feet and be unable to run.

      I mean, you don't ever see shields, speed shoes and invincible monitors get brought up in the games' cutscenes either, do you? It's part of these things not being viewed as important or valuable to the series the way Mario or Megaman's powerups are. Likely due to not being able to fine a conventional reason for a digital image of Sonic's shoes to appear on a computer in the middle of nowhere.

      "This Isn't A Game," and stuff like that.

      I say the Rings sort of fulfill the purpose of Speed Shoes, when their used as a means of a speedy getaway. The one time I can think of a Sheild being used is AOSTH's Chaos Emerald arc, when Sonic's ancestor gives him an amulet that produces one.

       

  14. You know, I'd be really interested in seeing an "Eggman-esque" character as a good guy.

    Not just a genius inventor; There are plenty of science/tech heroes - including the franchise's very own Tails.

    But, like, a scientific genius with Eggman's flair for showmanship, his ego, his verbosity, his uproarious laughter, etc. - but they just happen to be a hero. I'd be super into something like that.

    In Sonic CD, Metal Sonic sassily wagged his finger, much like Sonic does. It kind of got the vibe across, to me anyway, that his personality was like a reflection of Sonic's.

    Imagine if - when they decided to give Metal a voice in Heroes - instead of just being a kind of angry evil robot overlord, he had the same kind of upbeat totally radical attitude that Sonic did; the major difference being that he's a robot who works for Eggman.

      He could pretty much fill the position of Scourge: Talks and acts just like Sonic, but takes his asshole nature up to eleven and always intends on bringing harm and fear to whoever he pesters when he does so.

       

      I don't see why they needed Jun'ichi Kanemaru and Ryan Drummond to voice both Sonic and Metal when all they had them do was record generic roars for the monster of the week-

  16. Wacky Workbench is the only level where I think I prefer the US music; It just has this upbeat funky disco vibe about it that really sets it at odds with the generally grimmer vibe of the American OST.

      It's definitely one of the better parts of the US soundtrack, but I still prefer the JPN version. Tidal Tempest is the only US tracks that wins out in my opinion.

      The US soundtrack of CD on the whole is really solid and very distinct. It just has the unfortunate competition of CD JPN.

  17. The homing attack was a necessary evil for the 3D games; It was simply too difficult to steer Sonic into enemies manually in three dimensions. I'll concede that it's fine in those games.

    But I just do not understand putting the homing attack in 2D games.

      It's for the same reasons. I'd argue its not necessary but games like Sonic Rush are designed to be much easier than the classics to play so I can accept it.

       It's entirely possible to clear Sonic's campaign in the first Adventure without using the HA once (there's like, two HA chains that you're expected to use, but you can avoid them with some effort). The succeeding 3D games, not so much, but that's obviously because the games aren't designed to allow otherwise. HA in the modern 2D games only make this more obvious because the existing game design for 2D Sonic is heavily altered for it to be overruled by the HA (see Sonic 4 for a blatant example of this in action).

  18. When Sonic and Eggman go back to the 60s in M&S 2020, they revert to their classic designs - another nail in the "classic and modern are separate characters" coffin.

      "Classic and modern are separate characters" was never their idea.

      From Sonic 1 until Generations it was always the same Sonic. In Generations the Sonic from all the previous games meets a younger version of him which technically is still him.

      At the end of Generations when the young Sonic goes back to his timeline, the events of Generations made his timeline happen differently. (Think of Terminator or DB or the Butterfly Effect). It's not that classic Sonic isn't modern Sonic, it's that the Sonic we knew from 1 until Forces (not counting Mania as it never happened in the original timeline) is not the same as the Sonic that only went through the classic games, Mania and Forces.

      On one hand I really wish they would shoot this whole idea of the designs being separate characters dead and establish it as an shift in artstyle per game when it happens. Much like many other franchises that shifts around with art direction does. Mario turns into his original 8-bit SMB sprite in certain sections in Super Mario Odyssey and he's not played up as his own entity. 

      On the other hand Sonic Team's almost never looked back at using the original designs since the Adventure rebrand (they probably only did it with Generations due to the Sonic 4 backlash of using Millenium designs for a direct Genesis sequel, and did so again Forces because it was trying so hard to clone Generations' success) and if that's the only way games like Mania can happen under this management than so be it I guess...

      "You're that Sonic from another dimension!" implies that Tails was already familiar with the idea of classic Sonic being a separate entity from modern Sonic though.

    OK KO makes the crossover characters an established part of a main character's backstory.

      Anyone who gets mistaken for Sonic in the games - even for a moment - counts as a "coincidental lookalike" since Sega themselves are drawing comparisons between their appearances.

      I still don't understand how people like Amy can easily confuse Sonic for Silver or Shadow.

      The spikes are different (especially Silver's), the colors are different, event the eyes.

      Metal Sonic at least most of the times had a similar build and color to Sonic.

      As far as both Generations and Forces are concerned, talking the difference between Modern and Classic Sonic is difficult too.

      You've just got to roll with it. They're not similar at all, not least of all because of their completely different colours. But they serve a narrative purpose.

      But you're right, I forgot the different models of Shadow Androids, who are different robots.

      I always figured the chrome Sonic and Shadow in Heroes were skins (i.e. alternate forms) of the original characters, hence not including them.

  22. Do you believe Sega will ever recant on the "classic and modern are separate worlds" thing and go back to the old single timeline?

    The impression I get is that most fans don't really like the split and see it as something that ultimately makes it harder to get invested in the series from a story/character perspective, since for either Sonic, a huge chunk of their adventures suddenly never happened/don't count anymore.

      doubt it. the split doesn't even really matter, considering how little sega/sonic team cares about the series canon anyway. most likely we'll end up back with a single timeline because they'll just give up on maintaining the classic branch at some point

      It's possible, Sega seems to change their minds on a lot of things regarding these series. I still choose to ignore the split because it's dumb and doesn't make me enjoy the games any more, but I still kinda hate that it's a big part of the Sonic series' marketing despite not being reflected in the games.

      Then again I also like to think of (almost) every game being canon to each other and I've seen some pushback against this within the fanbase. Things tend not to contradict each other a whole lot in this series so I don't see how seeing Chaotix and the Game Gear games as canon at some point affects the overall timeline.

      It's possible but I've settled into my position of ignoring it because I don't believe it matters. Aside from a random line or two in Forces, the fact that this is the new status quo isn't something that's going to be explored at all. Most of what Sonic Team/SEGA say about the changes in the story are things that a casual fan would probably never find out about because of how little the games incorporate them into the stories. 

      There's also the fact that, despite the worlds supposedly being different, Modern Sonic still has a Green Hill Zone and a Chemical Plant Zone anyway. There's nothing stopping me from just assuming that what happened in the Classics still happened in the Modern world except with green-eyed Sonic instead. I don't see why not.

      On top of that, it's really only something that stands a chance at even being relevant should they explore the characters' past before the Adventure games (fat chance) or bring Classic Sonic into another Modern game again (heaven forbid). It's basically useless information otherwise.

      I'm more concerned about the much more egregious and ridiculous assertion that Modern Sonic's stories sometimes take place on a human-only world and an animal-only world. That right there just doesn't work, no matter how you slice it.

      Hey, didn't expect the stickler to jump in like half a day later did ya.

      The split has technically existed for at least 15 years now. It's possible it goes all the way back to Adventure (as the two world split has been said to date back to) but we know evidence of it goes back to, at minimum, Heroes. 

      If they've kept that for over half the franchise's existence, have had it on the low up until very recently and haven't walked back on it even with a classic branch being formed, I doubt they'll ever consider it.

      Generations claimed that the classic games were events that took place in the past, not "another dimension."

      Furthermore, Sonic Adventure has classic iconography. The classic Sonic characters appear in the Casinopolis pinball game, and Eggman has likenesses of his classic design in the Hedgehog Hammer minigame. Also, in Sonic Pocket Adventure - released around the same era - Eggman actually wears both his classic and modern outfits over the course of the game. 

      SA1 was not a retcon of the designs, because the classic designs appeared in it. It's acknowledged that the characters used to look like that, and in the contemporarily-released SPA, both of Eggman's designs are used for the same character in the same game.

      To me that demonstrates that they were not thought of as separate at that time.

      There's no way all this was planned so long ago. They may have sprinkled in some non-commital "evidence" of these concepts in a few games but if this direction truly was the full and honest truth, the extreme level of incompetence it takes to hold that close to your chest for over 15 years almost makes me lose what little hope I have left.

      Though, again, the Classic Sonic stuff is easily ignorable. I'll just continue to assume the same locations exist (because Adventure and Forces prove they do) and the same events happened in the Modern world until they ruin it by telling us it didn't, contradicting even more evidence that it totally did.

      The generally accepted theory of modern Sonic (and canon, really) is that the main classic games happened in some form anyway. So nowadays the only real distinction are titles like SegaSonic the Hedgehog not happening in modern while happening in Mania and other such minor examples.

      I mean, SA1 basically had a flashback to Sonic CD at the beginning of Amy's story (using the modern designs but that just seemed more like laziness/not wanting to make new models than an artistic choice, especially since the classic designs are referenced elsewhere in the same game).

    Imagine the ridiculous cartoon adaptation of Super Mario RPG, where Dic attempts an actual story arc (interspersed with jokes and musical numbers of course) and has Harvey Atkin's sneaky slimy portrayal of King Koopa teaming up with Walker Boone's Brooklyn tough guy Mario.

    What could have been.

      Super Mario's 64 Adventures (1997) is renowned for being the first CG cartoon based on a video game. 64 episodes (each for one of Mario's adventures mentioned in the title) across 2 seasons were planned, but parents calling in to the network and complaining about the show's disturbing primitive CG effects led to the cancellation of the second season.

      Little is known about the show, as only the first 4 episodes were ever released to VHS and no re-releases have surfaced since. It remains an enigma amongst the Mario fanbase.

  24. Super Mario Odyssey broke free of the franchise's "everything has to be NSMB-derivative" curse, with plenty of unique locations and characters, and even direct continuity with previous games  - one of Miyamoto's big no-nos.

    It makes me dare to hope that a proper Paper Mario sequel isn't totally out of the question anymore.

      The thing that makes me skeptical that PM could go back to its roots the same as the main, Tennis and Party series is that is regarding its staff at Itelligent Systems. The old staff got split up (Ryota Kawade seemed to voluntarily move on from directing and went on to make Project STEAM), and I don't count on the new people there moving away from the new formula they made.

      Part of my head wants to blame Fire Emblem for stealing its thunder since the 10s. They give it much more love and care, and should be more willing to share that effort with PM.

      At the same time though, like... Money talks. Tanabe knows everyone's going to absolutely blast the next game if it doesn't show any improvements, and he also knows he can't keep ignoring the fandom's requests forever if he values his reputation (especially after directly responding to fandom pleas with LM3). Their current philosophy is an temporary solution that can only keep them going for so long, with all the sustainability of a plaster on an open wound.

      It's not going to satisfy the casual soccerkids that don't know what a Paper Mario is because it's so overcomplicated, it's not going to satisfy critics if they learn nothing from their previous blunder, and it's sure as hell not going to please fans. There is literally no benefit to making another game that doesn't acknowledge the first two. The only people benefiting from it is Tanabe who seems to get off on the hatred directed at him like a fucking internet troll (not even the rest of the dev team shares his sentiment if certain rumours are to be believed).

      The problem of Paper Mario isn't just Tanabe. If you read the Iwata Asks of Paper Mario: Sticker Star, you can see that Taro Kudo (Director of Sticker Star and Color Splash) wasn't very interested in a detailed story too:

      I originally saw it in a way that's similar to Miyamoto-san. Personally I think all we need is to have an objective to win the boss battle at the end of the game. I didn't think we necessarily needed a lengthy story like in an RPG. Instead, we looked at the characteristics of a portable game that can be played little by little in small pieces and packed in lots of little episodes and ideas. I always did like putting in little ideas, so I actually enjoyed it.

      Miyamoto isn't very active at Nintendo nowadays, but Tanabe and Kudo still are working on new projects. While I still expect the worst, I hope that Luigi's Mansion 3 is a sign of future changes for the series.

      Yeah, Luigi's Mansion 3 in particular seems like a really good sign.

      After Dark Moon, I never expected to see humanoid/portrait ghost characters in the series again, and their return to LM3 is so exciting. They added so much character to the first game. And, importantly, they fall well outside the "standard platformer Mario character design" parameters that Nintendo stuck so hard to during the Wii U era.

      Combined with Odyssey, it makes me hopeful that Nintendo is loosening up a little on what can and can't be in a Mario game.

      Well, the later games kinda retconned that. For instance, the remake of Bowser's Inside Story removes all the designs of female Toads to look like regular Toads wearing an apron.

      They clearly have something analogous to gender because they use gendered pronouns. (i.e. Toadsworth is a "he," while Chanterelle is a "she").

      It seems like what they did was just blanket-change all the nameless NPCs into generic Toads, but left all the named plot-relevant characters (Toadsworth, Toadbert, Toadley, Toadley's intern, etc.) alone.

      Even the generic red Toad in the apron is still called "Mom" by the kid in the intro, interestingly.

      I do wish they weren't on such a "make all the Toads super generic" kick, either way. I like the RPGs' unique character designs and didn't see anything wrong with them.
