  1. Two Separate Worlds in the Sonic games

...How was Angel Island in the "human world" then? Clearly they didn't think this back during the Adventure era, did they?
  2. The phrase "turning animals into robots" has never really been an accurate description of what Eggman does or how Badniks work.

Maybe the animals were turned into robots, and Sonic's quills are magic and they happen to poof back into animals when he hits them.

It's a simpler description than the alternatives.

Sure, it doesn't involve literal transmutation from flesh into metal like in SatAM or Archie, but they've been using that description ever since the Sonic 1 Japanese manual, so what basis do you have to say it's so wrong? I get your broad point, but the animal is still a component of the robot, so is that phrasing really inaccurate just because it's not as clear and literal as possible? To be honest, I personally like the phrasing.

Sure, but I feel like SatAM and Archie got the concept wrong, in part, because the phrasing in the manuals was kind of vague and unclear though.

I genuinely think that if the description had been a little clearer, the cartoons' concept of "roboticization" would have never been conceived of to begin with.

They didn't get it wrong, they reinterpreted it.

  3. I want more Odyssey, man.

    DLC Kingdoms, extra moons, something.

  4. I've had some time to step back and look at things a little more objectively now that the immediate hype has settled down a bit, and I still think Odyssey is my game of the year, with BOTW taking an extremely close second.

    1. SenEDDtor Missile

      SenEDDtor Missile

Both of them are pretty neck and neck for me, and frankly I think BotW is better if you're looking for something more atmospheric, and Mario Odyssey is better for Pick Up and Play, even though they're both sandboxy styled versions of their genre (action adventure and platforming respectively).

  5. Should The Next 3D Sonic Game Forget About Story?

The last 3D Sonic already forgot about story, effectively ripping what was left of the series' continuity apart. I think that Sonic Team needs to focus on writing likable characters and creating a cohesive world that we as viewers can actually get invested in. In my opinion, right now the series has neither of these things, and that's why smacking us over the head with doom and gloom is unlikely to elicit more than an "Eh..." from most people. Honestly, at this point I feel like improving the story of this series is entirely theoretical anyway. I don't see Sonic Team in its current state ever clawing their way out of the hole they've been digging for the past 15 years.
  6. I think it's time for Shadow the Hedgehog 2

I would argue that this series can't really afford to play into absurd gimmicks right now, considering it doesn't even have a solid core gameplay identity as it is. I simply cannot see another Shadow game being anything other than a critical and commercial flop.
  7. I think it's time for Shadow the Hedgehog 2

No thanks. Shadow the Hedgehog is one of this franchise's most embarrassing marks of shame, rivaled only by Sonic 2006 and Rise of Lyric in infamy. It was a laughably bad attempt to do a so-called "mature" Sonic game. The end result was a rushed, unpolished mess of a game with a ridiculous attempt at a "dark" story; The game comes off like it's written by an edgy twelve-year old who just learned how to curse and thinks it's a really cool and rebellious way to show off for his fellow middle-schoolers. Shadow was an awful, awful mess of a game. It was effectively Sonic 06's warm-up act, and I think both games should stay in the dustbin of history, where they belong.
  8. Remember when Eggman tried to nuke a city?

Is the missile really any worse than Chaos? I mean, he wasn't "pushed too far" when he decided to destroy Station Square with a giant water beast. So even though the missile has vibes of Eggman just throwing up his hands in frustration and using a quick and easy method of destruction, I don't really see it as that much worse - other than that Chaos probably left more survivors than the missile would have, I guess. Either way, I don't feel like his snapping made him do anything any more drastic or cross any lines that he hadn't already gleefully leapt over already by that point in the story.
  9. Remember when Eggman tried to nuke a city?

This has always kinda bugged me. Anything from that missile to one of the Eggman Bomboms he used to destroy Prison Island to something as simple as parking the Egg Carrier on the city would've done the job, with far less hassle than unleashing an unstable ancient evil and collecting the Chaos Emeralds to power it up. Weirder still, he got exactly what he wanted. Station Square was still destroyed ("All's well that ends well, right?"), but for whatever reason, he never built Eggmanland on its flooded ruins. Maybe he was just too proud to do it? Like, since Chaos wasn't under his command at the time, he figured it was a hollow victory and that he needed to build Eggmanland totally on his terms? (Incidentally, my headcanon is that this version of Eggmanland would've been a water park rather than an amusement park, what with all the flooding and all.)
  10. I think after Forces, any fleeting investment I might have had in the continuity and lore of the series was totally dashed, because nothing makes any coherent sense anymore.

    1. Depression Kong

      Depression Kong

I think the worst part about it all is just how easy it would be to fix it, but they insist on handling it as backwards as possible.

All Iizuka has to do is say "yeah, humans and animals exist in the same world, you just don't always see both because there'd be no reason for humans to be living there" or "yeah, Generations happens after 3 and Knuckles and after that there's a timeline split - One half branches off to the 3D games, while the other half branches off to the Mania games" or "yeah, the Moon was rebuilt after Adventure 2, that's why it looks fine" (or better yet just keep the fucking Moon broken in Heroes onward and stop taking pictures of the Moon off Shutterstock) or something. It doesn't have to be so complicated.

What gets me is how fans will frequently go on and on about story is one of Sonic's strong suits, but like... it's constantly self-contradictory and broken.

  11. Tails is Useless.

Antoine was at least funny. Honestly, out of the SatAM heroes, he had the most personality. Even though he was a coward, he'd constantly act brave, and attempt to trick others (and himself) into believing he was a courageous, confident hero. He kinda gave me Mr. Satan vibes, and that's never a bad thing. I say this as someone who honestly dislikes SatAM/Penders-era Archie, but Antoine's "fake bravery" shtick was still a lot more dynamic and interesting than Tails's current state is.
  12. Tails is Useless.

Modern Tails is basically nothing but a brainy exposition-dump character who exists to explain things, but not actually contribute in a meaningful way to the story. Sure, Lost World and Forces try to make him provide some emotional drama, but he ends up coming across as whiny and annoying rather than sympathetic. Especially since, in Forces:
  13. Sonic Forces SPOILER Thread

Sure, but a lot of the old manuals kept referring to South Island. Pretty much all the Gamegear games at least referenced it, and most took place there. There's no conceivable way this huge landmass passes for an island, so it feels like a pretty major change. And the thing is, I'm not even sure it was an intentional retcon so much as nobody at Sonic Team remembering/caring about what the old games said.

  15. Should Shadow and Rouge be bad guys again

Actually, that's true. As a thief, who steals things that don't belong to her, Rouge has at least some villainous tendencies despite having an ostensibly squeaky-clean government job (though even that's pretty shady, since she willingly helped blow up one of her own bases).
