    Yeah, about that... It was kinda bizarre to watch streams of the beta and find out things that used to be familiar on my gameplay sessions are no longer there, like TACOs not being a thing anymore. I mean, they still exist, but they no longer wield any meaningful rewards besides the satisfaction of clearing the quest (and even then, there are other things that are being used as a e-peen measuring stick, like the Endless Quest). Nowadays it seems like meseta mining consists of a mix of Daily Orders and a new set of Weekly Missions that feel more like a battle pass (also, people are speculating/datamining that the NA version will also have an actual Battle Pass apart from these orders).
    Another thing I noticed is that some stances are no longer active, I did some digging and I've only seen a post on Bumped saying Fury/Brave/Average/Elemental have become passive skills, while the other stances (Guard/Wise/Weak/Break) remain active. For a moment I wasn't fully sure if it was a NA only thing because I couldn't find it in the patchnotes for EP5 nor 6, but apparently those lists aren't quite as complete as I thought they were... feels super weird that I'm going back into this game with very little knowledge of all the changes that occurred in my absence (unless I do a binge run of the all the blogposts made for the last 4 years and no way I'm doing that).
     
    As for the story, eh. I personally felt like it pretty much ended on Episode 3. It wasn't the best one out there but the build up was good, the planets and its inhabitants felt interesting enough and the pay off at the end was actually super cool. Episodes 4 and 5 on the other hand are so detached from the game's feeling that I couldn't take them seriously, and it was pretty much SEGA just chasing trends (I will never forget nor forgive how disappointed I felt when I heard about Episode 5 for the first time and thought we were going to classic Phantasy Star, only to later find out it was just a generic fantasy universe and how SEGA just wanted to cash out on the Isekai thing that's still going to this day). People have been telling me that Episode 6 is getting things back on track but still accounts for characters and events that occurred on 4 and 5 so I don't know how to feel about it.
    That said, judging by the beta it seems like Microsoft/SEGA/whoever is mostly releasing things as they dub them (and even then some lines on the beta were not dubbed), so we might get content on a small but constant drip-feed basis rather than everything at once (mechanically speaking, the game is nearly up-to-date, but story/EQ/event-wise, we don't know). It feels pretty safe to assume we are only going to get the story dubbed up to the point the current anime leaves us (that being, the end of EP3).

    So the Xbone beta came and went, did any of you guys play it? I didn't but I managed to scout for quite a bit of footage and info and I felt the need to share the most interesting tidbits.
    1) Dubbing
    Apparently, it's actually pretty good! The general consensus seems to be that the characters all sound pretty good and most of the arguments are tied to the process of localization (this character sounds different, rather than just bad). The most mentioned cases in this are are Afin who became Australian and swears like a sailor and Zeno, who got the voice pitch slider way lower than his Japanese counterpart. I personally really like most of the voices and I especially love Afin, I find his direction to be nothing short of genius and I'm going to be legit upset if a certain character relevant to his story doesn't follow through.
    Also, most surprisingly, they even went as far as to dub the concert songs!
    (not gonna lie, when I heard it memories came rushing down and I started weeping like that funny cat picture)
    Only the two first Quna singles were in the beta but who knows what that means for the rest of the game. Are we getting Dubbed Rare Drop KOI KOI? Are we getting dubbed Mamagatsu? Are the Engrish songs on the many credit screens getting dubbed as well? (Hello makes me cri everytiem)
     
    2) Translation
    Translation on the other side of the coin, seems to be pretty iffy. While one can understand why people in North America would want nothing to do with the constant warring factions of the White and Black provinces and the (I guess?) properly named people living in them, the team took some other translation decisions that left people scratching their heads. 

    The usual S-Atk (for Strike) R-Atk (Ranged) and T-Atk (Tech) stats JP players might be used to got changed to this... Which is pretty questionable to say the least, I know for sure RNG Power is not something I want to hear about on this game and MEL Power doesn't even sound like Melee at all. I don't have a screen right now but I'm also pretty sure the stat screen in the MAG menu is also different (I'm pretty sure I saw MEL Support on one section). The other weird thing I noticed is that they bothered to translate the Katana (among other) Photon Art names, which is pretty weird since most of the PAs were already on English so one could easily guess those names were universal and no translation was needed.
    Darkers was always stupid tho and I'm glad it's gone.
     
    3) Version Differences
    I feel the need to remind people reading this post that I did not play the beta, and all I'm posting is information I heard about on forums or saw on livestreams. So don't take my words as absolute. Also, this was a beta, so things might change for the full release (unlikely as it might seen on an 8 year old game).
    First of all, we have a bit of a controversial possible change posted on many forums. People have been talking about how the character editor in the NA version got altered and both the minimum and maximum size for your character got increased. This means a certain very specific body type for characters got kinda deleted from this version (while including another one in its place).
    I have thoughts about this. I'm personally not a fan little girls and boys being in my anime sci fi fantasy beating up eldritch horrors next to my cool robot and I never liked the seemingly abundance of such characters in the Japanese server, but outright removing them seems wrong. This is especially true considering they are quite a number of canon characters who share that body type... And while one could argue that 1) Some of those characters are counter NPC's so they don't matter, and 2) Certain little girl characters are exceptional and as such should remain exceptional and not have a military kindergarden running in your game, there is one character that puts this into question, and it's a little boy from episode 4.
    Also, JezMM pointed this before on this thread but there is a question of how much of the content is being brought to this version, because they promised everything would be up to date (and mechanically speaking, they seem to be true, only the very last patch seems to be missing) but there is content... And there is "content". And some of that "content" is very spicy  so I could understand why you wouldn't want little kids accessing that "content"... But that's making the BIG assumption that said "content" makes it over here in the first place (some people have posted of a very specific piece not coming but no evidence has been posted about it, but if true it would suck because it's not only a pervy gear but also pretty useful for some layered clothes).
    That said, people also pointed out that character creation in general was borked on the beta, and there is a chance some people trying to stir up drama are running with it, so it remains to be seen how much I'm blowing things out of proportion.
    On a more positive note, there are apparently some gameplay changes as well on this version! I was watching a stream of some dood grinding weapons and I couldn't avoid to notice that it was an NT weapon, me living under a rock assumed that at some point there was a QoL patch on the JP server which replaced all the OT gear with their NT counterparts but reading some comments about the beta that's apparently not the case. Apparently, every weapon on the game being a NT weapon is an America version exclusive! (shotouts to JezMM for predicting this as well on this very thread) So who knows if we are getting some exclusive balance and progression system for ourselves? That's something to look forward to.
    *Sorry for not explaining what NT and OT gear is. Just know weapon grinding used to be dumb and now it's slightly less dumb.
     
    All in all, it seems like it was a pretty positive experience. And while I mentioned on this thread that I had no intention of coming back I have to admit that the itch to go through a mini solo run and soak on all the QoL I've missed in my three years of not playing has been getting pretty strong. So maybe I will give it a go on my own once it does come out. Just, don't expect it to be a carbon copy of the fan translated Japanese version. And keep expectations low about what "all the content" means.

    A big find that was recently unveiled, someone who bought a PS3 debug console found a early debug build of PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale on said console. The build, still named "Title Fight" is dated about roughly 11 months before the official release of the game, and a good way before the official announcement of the game in early 2012. PSASBR is infamous for having a lot of design changes and content cut before we eventually got the final release of the game, meaning a lot of the beta builds of the game showcase many interesting changes from the original version of the game.
    In the uncovered build, there was many things found that reveals how far in development certain aspects were, how long certain things were planned, what was in the pipeline at certain points of development, and more. We don't know the full extent of things as of yet, as Beta64 got a peak at a lot of the stuff, but not all, and someone called Kuriatsu who found the debug PS3, and the build is doing her own extensive look through the files. Because of this, it's worth looking at both, and keeping up with the series of videos that will come out, showcasing more and more stuff about the early version of the game. 
    The biggest question I'm sure on everyone's mind is which cut characters does the build reveal? Well, that's interesting, because it reveals in no short order that Dr. Nefarious, Buzz (from the quiz game), Blasto, a dog guard from Sly Cooper, two characters from Warhawk, as well as a Chimera was planned for the initial set of characters. On top of that, Snake was apparently planned until it was decided that Raiden was the better choice due to Revengearance releasing that next year. There's also a character from LocoRoco, although this is a placeholder for Good Cole, who found himself in a unfinished state at this point. Many more icons were found in the game files of the debug that are too many to count. It's also possible that these character icons are there for the "game changers", so it's up in the air. The files also make reference to characters who weren't in the build yet, such as Sir Dan, one of Fat Princess' minions, Nariko, and most importantly - Zeus (who was the final DLC character in the end).
    There's also a host of different gameplay changes, with more hazards that you could use to kill enemies, instead of having to rely on supers all the time, stage transitions were planned to be manual by defeating a "game changer" character, who would then drop an item and allow you to transition the stage, and use said transition hazard against your opponents. The title screen was vastly different, and honestly, was better, showing off your stats, and giving you a constant feed to show what your friends was doing online, and what they'd accomplished in-game. There's really too much to describe here, so I'll post the videos and let them speak for themselves. Highly recommend giving them a look, as it's one of the most interesting early versions of a game found in a long time. There's also 13 segments to the full overview of the debug build, so I'll be posting them as they release.

    Well, yeah, for good or ill all bets are off all over again. We get yet another year of speculation and leaks.
    Also, I've been pointed out that Terry's stage is not Antonov's arena but a generic (american) football stadium repurposed. But it's neat to see Ryo standing in the background like he did in the older KOF games (not quite in the same pose so I'm not sure how much of an homage that is).

    Also, kinda let down about Terry's stage not being the Transcontinental, but it being Antonov's Arena instead gives some credence to the supposition that he might be KOF Terry instead of his Fatal Fury self. So hopefully we get some Maxmode/HD shenanigans (as i said before, no idea how they'll make it work) to spice him up.

    That's... right...
    I know for a fact if content is up to date some of the bosses became outright obsolete since they were replaced with shinier purple-ier variants of them and those carry none of the context of their first appearances. Also if they want to keep the game up to date some of those quests should not show up at all (because people will want to farm for the most powerful item instead of an Elder Rod).
    A solution to this would be to make the old EQs regular quests that people can replay (maybe add a bit of a level to the boss only quests?) while keeping the new and shiny items on the weekly farm loop, new players would still be out of the loop but they'd be able to catch up.

    I do get the feeling that "all the content" is being used in very broad strokes, i.e. all the MAJOR content will be there gameplay-wise but not necessarily every item/cosmetic etc.
    I could see them using the new release as an opportunity to clean up the game and remove all the old shit (for example NT weapons will be the only weapons etc).
     
    But there is a lot of stuff that'll just be plain WEIRD to port over unchanged.  Like being a new player and being encouraged to start at episode 3 of the story rather than episode 1 for gameplay purposes because the overall game has slightly moved on from the earlier content gameplay/presentation-wise doesn't seem that strange, but doing so in a game that has just come out is pretty weird.  But they might still want to do it to make a strong first impression etc, since the cut-scenes in the early game were absolute crap, their animation improves considerably as time goes on (though there's still way, WAY too much of characters standing around talking when they should really be fighting lol).
     
    I also wonder how they'll pace out stuff like emergency quests. Since a lot of them serve as "final bosses" for pivitol single player story points, it made sense for them to show up for the first time around the time that the related story chapter released in original context, and for repeat plays to just cycle around every now and then (alongside remixed versions of said bosses). I wonder how they'll structure that here, where everyone will be making their way through 7 years' worth of single player content at a varied pace and may not have any idea what the context is for all these big random boss battles.  Granted, due to the slow pace of the english translation, that's exactly how it was for me playing the JP version and it didn't affect my enjoyment that much, but again, I KNEW I was late to the party. A whole wave of new players won't know that.

    Well I obviously can't speak for everyone but in my groups during the beginning of the game ARKS scratch wasn't really that liked to begin with, but we accepted it because "boy, Japan sure loves gambling huh?" and of course why would we complain about our host's rules when we were playing there uninvited to begin with? But (in my mind destroyed by years of video games) I can clearly remember one of the more usual responses to the question of "Why isn't PSO2 coming to the West?" was that SEGA was probably going to try to address this microtransaction method and make it more approachable to our audience (later on the answer became the stupid amount of crossovers and the licencing hell that comes with it, as a matter of fact there are some particular collabs that I genuinely have no idea how they managed to get them over here). Of course, the people who stayed on the Japanese servers for some years obviously didn't care that much about it, and the way SEGA handled the system is... tolerable (those 30% boosters tho, those layered costumes tho)... so the lack of complaints about the system makes sense to me.
    But you are right about the game being F2P and because of it we could see ARKS Scratch make its debut over here without too much fuzz... Or so would have been the case if it weren't because now the USA is also getting into the lootbox case.

    I knew it, it was that or the licencing hell that are those microtransactions (Dead or Alive amount of cosmetics, most of which are Crossovers).
    In Japan PSO2's way of acquiring cosmetics are either:
    1) By playing a scratch for a chance at the cosmetic you want (with an extra expensive scratch that gives you a bigger chance)
    2) By paying a stupid amount of Meseta to other players selling you said cosmetics at the price of their choosing.

    1. Dragon Ball Z Dokkan Battle

    "Dokkan Fighting", an 8-bit minigame was teased for Dokkan. It will help you remember the good old days in the old video game graphics. (it's not real sadly)
    Alongside it, new Goku and new Vegeta cards were released. Even their S. Attacks are pixelated.
    2. Ryu Wa Gotoku/Yakuza
     
    A Yakuza RPG was teased featuring the Online protagonist instead of Kiryu Kazuma. For all we know this might end up being Shin Yakuza.

    HYPE! A sequel is coming for probably my favorite game last year which might be among my top fave games altogether! And the best part I am personally most excited for here is the fact "Hornet" is the main character this time for Hollow Knight-2! (FYI She is the best Hollow Knight character.)
    Hornet was originally planned to just be a cool playable character DLC add-on for Hollow Knight-1... But they later instead decided to upgrade that to a whole new epic game of it'z own! And I couldn't be more excited!!! These are amazing metroidvania style games! Note that backers of the first game also get this new game for free!
    On a side note: I MUST go finally draw some Hornet fan-art which I've been meaning to do for a long while already. x3
