I'mma tell you all a story. I've been in this community since 2003, and while I've never been part of the Retro set I've followed Retro since way back when Wai still regularly posted on it and had his name on the site title. And this release today:

Is the biggest one since that Sonic 2 Beta. So hopeless was the chance of ever seeing this one that I remember a couple huge hoaxes that centered around someone digging it out of their attic or whatever and faking some screenshots for the lulz. So many blurry screenshots, vague descriptions of level layouts and off-screen camera recordings of level snippets dug up over the past two decades almost. Sparkling Zone, Clock ORK Zone, the Marble Zone UFOs, the crazy Labyrinth background art, the physics ball at Green Hill.

It's all here, and all able to be checked out by the community for the first time. I was honestly nearly shaking when I saw Tracker start posting about it on Twitter.

No need - I actually agree, that article was crap. You may notice it was written 10 years ago, which is a lot of time for viewpoints to change and develop. Seriously, where do you guys keep finding these posts? I had totally forgotten until now that I even had a blog once.
Anyway, the problem as it stands today isn't that Sega is listening to fans at all, but that they are simply incapable of parsing the good feedback from the bad. Even when they do find themselves stumbling apon sound advice, they manage to misinterpret it in incredibly asinine ways one can't help but liken to a monkey's paw - such as taking a suggestion that the franchise should follow the example of classic Sonic more and instead establishing modern and retro Sonics as entirely separate characters, which isn't something anyone ever asked for or works to the benefit of the series. I suspect part of this is down to language barriers innate to a japanese company insisting on catering to western audiences without the input of actual westerners, but frankly, these problems are rooted a lot deeper than simply who Sega and Sonic Team chooses to listen to - more recent Sonic games are bad in a way that their core concepts and directions are irrelevant to, and can't even seem to fufill their OWN intentions correctly, much less those of their audience of choice.
This is scarcely even a point of contention in any other fanbase - the only reason fan input was ever controversial here is that Sega and Sonic Team are bad at it. And that's really just the one common denominator in all of Sonic's grief lately, isn't it? We can't have nice things because Sonic Team are bad at things. Most people changed their tune REAL quick once Mania came out, so nowadays I think it's best not to overthink anything that can't be fixed with a team that actually knows what they're doing and stop making excuses for what we have now.

I'll just stress that I don't think that mono-eye is essential for movie Sonic to look good. I would like him to have the mono-eye of course, but it's more important that they're closer to the usual shape. You can still make Sonic look like Sonic with some changes to his eye shape. They're am important, but more subtle detail.

I think MainJP and Blue Blood have nailed it with their replies already.
It's definitely a key part of the design. As important as the spikes IMO.
I mean... Look at Sonic Team's logo lol.

I don't think that the issue is mono-eye or not. As @MainJP correctly pointed out, Sonic's eyes make up almost his entire face. The shape and size of his eyes very important to his design, even if they're not as immediately as iconic as Mickey's ears, the Simpsons' yellow skin or indeed Sonic's own blue fur and spikes. The issue with the movie design is that Sonic's eyes are small, round circles instead of large, dynamic and angled. Eyes are a more subtle part of Sonic's design than his spikes and they can be messed around with, but its important that the size and shape are kept relatively the same.

How is that a minor detail? It makes up almost his entire face.

It's one of the first things people notice about his appearance. Across all of his official incarnations that's one of the most consistent elements of his design, dude!
That explains the mental gymnastics. You could have just led with that instead of wasting time trying to say they aren't iconic.

Respectfully... That is madness lol. It's like saying Mickey Mouse looks better without ears or Homer Simpson looks better without yellow skin. It's absolutely integral to the design and has been for almost 30 years. It's iconic AF.
    In my opinion of course!
Sonic with separate eyes looks wrong. It doesn't look like Sonic and there is no reason to change it for the movie.
If we can have a live action Mr Mime and Ditto, we can have a live action, mono-eye Sonic.

I love shitting on all the dumb things that this franchise has done and continues to do, with the movie and Sonic's design therein being the latest in a long list of fuck ups. But l have to say that the new design looking worse than the original one is so unlikely that it's virtually impossible. The original design was bad. Bad enough for what feels like the entire world to come together to tear it apart and force the studio to admit that they need to go back to the drawing board. All of the problems with the design and execution have been documented by Sonic fans, movie fans, impartial critics and industry contemporaries. We even know for a fact that SEGA, the IP holders, were dissatisfied with the design from the get-go but were relatively unable to take control because of how licensing rights are handled for cases such as this.
The design will be improved. There's absolutely no way that Sonic's design is going to look worse. It might not look good (personally speaking I'm still expecting it to look pretty crap) and there there will always be issues with how appears in a live-action setting because of subjective opinions. But it will be better than this:

Welcome StarwarsSonic, our dear timetravel from the year 2006!
Welcome to the world of tomorrow in what I like to call "2019!"
    What's that?
You want Sonic to go back to basics?
Like only Sonic and Tails playable, back to classic style gameplay, green hill zone, back to the roots?

    Boy

    do I

    have

    great

    news

    for you.

Now do me a favor and wake me up when one of these alleged "All Sonic's shitty friends are playable and there's a deep complicated dark story and Dr. Eggman is super over the top" games shows up, thanks. Everyone seems convinced they're all over the place but I can't find them.

I agree Team Sonic racing was way too generous with giving Sonic's friends a playable role. Blaze AGAIN? Come on Sega, she had 2 entire playable appearences 15 years ago, don't over-do it. Team Sonic racing would indeed have been superior if it only had 15 diffrent incarnations of Sonic playable. Finally time for "Sprite from Sonic spinball" to get its well deserved time in the spotlights.

Sarcasm aside, I too am tired of Eggman, but not because he's too over the top. Au contraire, it's because he's dull and bland, either an ineffectual clown making dad jokes or bland bad guy man.
I'm all for Dr. Eggman if they give him his old intensity back.

Well which is it, man? 'cause Eggman's as much a part of "the basics" as anyone. You want to go back to basics and try to get the series back on track, he's really got to be part of it.
Anyway, Eggman's probably one of the characters I'm least tired of. Once they stopped having literally every monster upstage him (it's fine in moderation but it shouldn't be the climax of every game), I hardly have a complaint about him, and he's consistently been one of the best parts of the series. If anything I want more Eggman; ditch the monsters in favor of some inanimate macguffin and have Eggman be more hands-on in facing the heroes.

Normally I would agree, but the problem with that is that creates a slippery slope. What someone does in their personal life, is, of course, their business. But if they're a liar, cheater, sending nudes to minors (Yes, we've established that he didn't KNOW they were minors, but he is still a moron for not considering how easy it is to lie about your age on the internet), or doing scummy things all around, that's a bit of an issue for me, and, by the reaction to the ordeal at large, it's also an issue for many people.
But, of course, conversely, there are people who don't care at all, which is also fine. Some people just want to watch the content and don't really care who makes it, which, I admire your ability to separate the artist from the art.

As for why everyone is so angry, it's because cheating is an incredibly scummy and shitty thing to do, (not that I have much sympathy for Heidi either) and it makes it all the stranger that he waited months to say anything, on top of redirecting blame yet again.

Well, yeah, there was Boom, but there's also the super popular SatAM, Sonic Mania...sure, the West DEFINITELY has had it's missteps with Sonic, but the success of Sonic Mania is going to be super hard to ignore. Sonic has always been more successful in the West, as has been established an innumerable amount of times, so focusing more on the Western market only makes sense.
