SaturnWolf got a reaction from Mad Convoy in Sonic Forces Development Speculation (Spoilers)
Yeah, I remember posting an early draft of the script here like...a year ago I think? That referenced Mephiles. It was unearthed by Windii and Speeps. A lot of people doubted it (and I don't necessarily blame them, Mephiles just showing up out of nowhere after 11 years and Rouge speaking like she knows him even though he technically shouldn't even exist is kinda dumb) but it turns out that may have some weight to it.
And yeah, a lot of people kinda suspected most of that "four years" development went to the engine. For as much as people tout that about Forces, it feels like a game that was slapped together within a few months, and that's largely because it kinda was.

SaturnWolf got a reaction from Mad Convoy in Is the fanbase as large and as active today as it was 10-15 years ago?
    Eh, kinda?
Like @Mad Convoy mentioned, it's sort of hard to measure how big a fandom is. Sure, most Sonic fans do buy the games, but there's also a sizable section of the fandom that doesn't or can't for any number of reasons. There's also small children who are fans that, if they or their guardian(s) are smart, won't be interacting with anyone online until they're old enough to know what kind of things go on online.
The short of it is, there's a lot of people we simply can't account for. Another factor to consider is, as others have mentioned:
Forums in general are kind of dying as a medium. Sure, places like this still stand, but it's far from bustling with activity outside of like, the Sonic movie thread, but even then that just boils down to a few regulars and a few others who wander in every now and then. I'm sure if you went into something like, a Sonic Discord or subreddit it would be a different story, but as Stricker mentioned, Sonic games have also kinda slowed down. TSR came and went, and the last major, mainline game (Forces) is almost 2 years old at this point, and I believe it was mentioned that the next mainline Sonic game will be the 30th anniversary game. Something we're still about a year and a half out from, so it's not entirely unusual that we don't know anything about it other than "Sonic Team is working on something".
I dunno. I guess the best analogy I have here is that, like most fandoms, Sonic is just sort of a series of hills and valleys. When we have a ton of info dumping or a major game coming out like Mania or Forces or Generations or whatever, expect a lot more buzz. But we're just kinda waiting around for the next thing currently.

Sonic has only two loves: Chili dogs and adventures.
The shipping wars are already annoying enough, I'd really rather they not add fuel to that fire.

SaturnWolf reacted to Strickerx5 in Is the fanbase as large and as active today as it was 10-15 years ago?
Eh, I mean it’s something that’s pretty difficult to pin down. Like with every fandom, it actively fluctuates depending on what the actual franchise is doing. Only a few fandoms like Star Wars or something are immune to droughts like that. It’s why you see things like the Kid Icarus or F-Zero fandom lay dormant for a while but reawakened over the past year with Ultimate. At the end of the day, fandoms need content to keep active.
This applies to Sonic. Simply put, we had more content coming out of the franchise a decade ago. As opposed to now where the last main game is going on 2 years at this point and didn’t really leave much of an impression outside the community. Not to mention the last game, at all, didn’t make much of a splash even in its small genre. The most we have currently and coming up are the comics (which honestly never have drawn up much attention outside its usual circle), the crossover special, a new entry in the Olympic series (stopped caring about these since London imo), and the movie which... well, no one really wants to talk about.
Basically, I think we’re just neck deep in a rest period. A decade ago, we never really had such intervals. There was always a big new game somewhere on the horizon back then.

SaturnWolf reacted to Wraith in Even Yuji Naka didnt want a cutesy funny Sonic
Yuji Naka may have "wanted" Sonic to be a certain way some 20 years ago, but the fact is, he left the series in 2006. His thoughts on Sonic have probably shifted since then and even if they did they're essentially meaningless since he's not in charge of the series anymore. The intention to "soften Sonic up" was imo deliberate and probably in motion before Naka left considering how far in advance these things have to be in the works. Sonic has been through a lot of changes because, believe it or not, Naka isn't his only father. A lot of people work on a given series and they're all gonna have their own take. Even with a franchise that's largely an exception to a lot of this stuff like Mario is due to the same person working on the franchise all it's life and being unwavering in his design principles for better, or for worse.
A specific IP is allowed to be dynamic in the variety of tones it explores. It's...normal, really, and the sign of a good, flexible IP. Compared the moodier Rayman 2 with the preppy, goofy Rayman Origins, or Ratchet in the PS2 days to the shift to a lighter tone in the later ones. It comes with the fact that the people making these series are evolving and ever changing, along with the world outside of it.

Sonic CD's promotional art and overall vibe were a lot more moody and serious than Sonic Mania, which is a lot more on the light hearted and fun side. You can even see this in each game's animated intro. Sonic CD is driven by urgency, stunts and stakes while Sonic Mania is a lot sillier, not afraid to show Sonic fumble around a bit, pal around with his friends and...smile. It's official art and animations are often simple and cutesy and even the sprites in game are a lot more expressive than they usually are.

Were either of these games bad or not Sonic games for what they were trying to do? Not really. They're just two different expressions.
Now extend that across the entire series and now you know why I don't care much about the tone thing anymore, as long as it's done well and leans into the series's strengths.
Sonic's character design isn't suited to realistic violence and clashes with realistic graphics, but he's a very strong personality and it's enjoyable watching him overcome what seems impossible. You have to actually have it in you to make it seem impossible though. Some of the character's coolest moments are action scenes where he's in high stakes situations, and an actual story, characters and stakes worth caring about would only heighten those situations when they finally come to pass. This is basic storytelling 101.
He's a mobile and expressive character so he's not suited to sitting around and telling jokes. Take advantage of this character design and do more slapstick. The funniest Sonic thing is Night of the Werehog and NOBODY talks in that shit. There are a lot of characters so if  you're going to do comedy you might as well use their personalities and different quirks as a strength and have them bounce off of eachother. The same two characters standing around and talking is not going to work no matter how good of a writer you are.
This is the most roundabout of roundabout ways for me to say the tone doesn't matter that much and you guys are too focused on it again. There are fundamental problems with how Sonic approaches things that need to be called out first, and after that, the "tone" discussion is a matter of fucking preference. Even if we go with the "get with the times" idea there's still darker animated movies and action shonen aimed at children, so it's not clear cut either way. It's also possible for a series to dip into both ends of the pool as I just described.

There are plenty of correct ways to state how the series is seen less favorably in the public eye rather than to wrongly pair it with a real disorder.
Failure to choose your words more carefully in the future will result in harsher actions.

Yakuza, Skies of Arcadia, Phantasy Star Online, Jet Set Radio, Super Monkey Ball, NiGHTS, Total War, Puyo Puyo and more all laugh back at you. Even Sonic Team, when it’s not a Sonic game, can make a good game.
I’m not sure why you made this comment, to be honest. SEGA is one of the largest Japanese video game publishers. They wouldn’t stay one of the largest if they were releasing crappy games, unless they’re EA.

I've had low expectations for this movie from the day it was announced. I don't think the movie will do that badly at the box office. I even think it'll rake in a lot of money, regardless of what the critic reception is.
But I've seen the massive development hell this movie has had. I've seen the tidbits that were shared in interviews and from the team on social media, the details of which felt off. I've seen them explain their vision for the movie, and it felt off. I've seen plot details trickle out, and it felt off. I've seen the trailer blow up in smoke, and the trailer also felt off.
Forgive me, but after feeling like everything associated wih this movie has been off for so long, then having the trailer come out and confirm my concerns about where this has been going, It's hard for me to believe this "we're listening, we care, we're open to feedback" thing they've been doing for a few months now.

So, Adi Shankar who is the executive producer of Dredd and the Netflix TV show, Castlevania respond to Jim Carrey’s reaction on the redesign.:
Carrey’s comments were responded to by Shankar in a brief open letter, which he exclusively sent to Screen Rant. It reads as follows:
    Dear Jim,
The audience isn’t “in on the creation” of the film you acted in. Sonic the Hedgehog was already created, decades ago. This film you lended your talents to adapted him incorrectly. It’s this perspective that Hollywood is entitled to dismantle iconography as it sees fit and reassemble it in ways that often bear little resemblance to the source that has led to the friction between gamers and the film industry.
    Best,

SaturnWolf reacted to Dr. Detective Mike in Female representation in Sonic
    Overall?
I would say that it's been largely fine as far as reception goes.
People have complaints about Amy (always) but that hasn't stopped her from being the most popular female character in the franchise. Rouge is generally well-liked even if there's a sub-group of people who find the "come hither" angle a bit daunting. To each their own on that one. Blaze, I never hear a bad word about. Cream is pretty much adored on one end and considered largely irrelevant and easily ignored on the other. Not much in terms of hate. Wave... hmm. I.. think she's hated. Most don't seem to really love her but, then again, her personality is purposefully more on the abrasive side so that might be partly intentional.
For the ones that matter, I think we're largely okay.
As for the less important females we have:
Sticks, who feels like she's gotten a bit of a mixed reception. I'm not too sure. I see a lot of love for her at times but I also recall a lot of people saying they found her annoying. Then again, most of that was during the lead up to Sonic Boom the TV show and what they could make of her during previews. Mostly, when Sticks is mentioned in passing, I don't see TOO strong a resistance against her but not a ton chomping at the bit to see her return either.
Marine is largely hated but she also hasn't had a single appearance worthy of note since 2007's Sonic Rush Adventure; a game that "coincidentally" also happens to be the game she debuted in. Fancy that. A few side appearances in the Archie comics where someone as niche as Breezy and Honey can be given a beefy role is faint consideration. There's also the costumes of her in the Olympics, her one sticker in Brawl, and her background appearance in one of the Sonic Channel comics. What a character.
Vanilla is Cream's mom. She's interesting because she's a mom. The series has a severe lack of those. In fact, she's literally the only one. I've never heard a bad word said about her and to be honest I'm not sure there even IS a reason to hate her.
Elise is garbo. Almost everyone hates her and, in my opinion, for good reason. Never do this again, SEGA. Or Sonic Team. Whoever's fault it is.
Shade is a character so out of the way and so forgotten that I literally couldn't remember her name for the first two minutes after remembering to talk about her. She's unnecessary and makes Knuckles' unique "Last of the Echidnas" thing a no-go. Can't say I found her all that interesting either. There's the occasional ask for her return, once in a blue moon, but I feel like the majority largely don't care.
Zeena is pretty bad. She has some good reactions to the characters she's supposed to bounce off of but her general personality isn't enough to be interesting on its own. She's just the girl of the Deadly Six and that's it. Granted, her traits aren't supposed to be endearing. She's a villain after all. However, that's not an excuse for being so basic. No one seems to like her.
Merlina is a character who often gets praised for being a well-done twist villain with an extremely unique motivation to boot. I don't think she's hated at all.
Sharha is also a character who doesn't seem to be hated. Her vague past with Erazor and the way she interacts with Sonic makes her a little charming and slightly interesting. Although, more could have been done to push it a bit further.
The Female Avatar character in Forces is Sonic's buddy. She's like the 4th little buddy Sonic's got, right after Cream, Charmy, and the Male Avatar but right before KO. She's good because she's little buddy material. We all want to be little buddy material.
    Fuck Julie Su.
    I'm done.

SaturnWolf reacted to Diogenes in Tails: between success and disservice of the character
That's comparing a fight against some slightly-above-mook-level robots that was written for the sake of introducing Tails, and the climax of a game where they're trying to escape the impending collapse of a space station and are suddenly cornered by Eggman and his super-robot, and Tails worries that they're not going to make it out of that mess. It's both in-character and narratively fitting for Sonic to push Tails to safety and take on the final boss alone, ensuring that his buddy makes it out alive even if it meant putting himself at greater risk.

SaturnWolf reacted to Wraith in Tails: between success and disservice of the character
A couple years ago I realized I was straight up apathetic toward Tails. Even when he was contributing more I straight up don't care much for the "boy genius" arechetype. I liked him more when he was Sonic's "puppy" since that's at least a characer trait that has room for growth and development. He didn't just drop exposition and finesse whatever gadget the game needed together.
I'm with the above post that I prefer more nuanced and flawed characters but I don't think the newer games do a good job at that either. One consistency from Unleashed onward is Sonic getting punished in some way for acting out, jumping the gun or underestimating his opponents. This never happens with Tails in Lost World or Forces. It always comes down to Tails being right in how he's feeling despite how it seems from the outsider's perspective. He was right about being the one that needs to turn off the machine in Sonic Lost World amd right about how fighting eggman was pointless without Sonic in forces. Flawed characters are better than the hypercompetent superhero take, but its kind of hard for me to watch flawed characters that never get pushback for screwing up.
I think you could combine elements of Tails across the series to make a pretty fun character. Give up on him being hypercompetent. Let his inventions have more flaws or quirks. Let him be more of an active participant in the game but also let him be a kid who can get jealous, discouraged or scared. I'd be okay with him growing out of Sonic's shadow as long as they did it in a way that didn't shed him of most of his quirks.
