Octarine got a reaction from ProfGawhite678 in Who is your favourite side character?
How do you feel about Wave, I wonder?

My favourite character in the series is Vector the Crocodile. I have kind of a condition that usually prevents me from latching on to main characters, so he's who I ended up with. It's weird.

He's simultaneously one of the most down-to-earth and yet one of the most ridiculous characters in the entire series, and I love the contrast. On one hand, he's one of the only characters (aside from the other Chaotix) to have something vaguely resembling a normal job and normal concerns. On the other hand... um, he's a crocodile who can breathe explosive gum bubbles, hangs out with a six-year-old, never takes off his headphones and is somehow capable of space travel.

Apart from Vanilla and Pachacamac (and the senior Grand Battle Kukku, and most of the Nocturnus, or at least Ix, and probably a bunch of the NPCs in Rush Adventure... this was a better point before I actually started thinking about it), I'm pretty certain that he's the only animal character confirmed to be over the age of 18, which makes me feel marginally less old. His sense of justice is prominent, but reasonable: he's generally a good guy, but he's still willing to help Eggman in Heroes even after discovering who he really is, mostly because of the reward. He's also intelligent enough to be a good detective without needing to be a genius like Tails or Eggman, which I love.

Also, like Marcello with purple Espio, I find it pretty awesome that Vector's green. I love me some green. The fact that he turns into a goddamned loop instead of a ball when spin-dashing is just about the coolest thing ever, too.

    ...find the computer room.

Er, no, as much as I'd love that. All of the characters' vital statistics have been on Sonic Channel forever; Free Riders just brought the weight issue back to my attention with the characters it did include. I'd have used a more Free Riders-relevant example, but Marine is the one who bothers me the most. I mean, she's eight years old. And she's Marine. I'd have bought that maybe she just doesn't know how much she weighs, but the idea that she does know and considers it something worth hiding is just bizarre to me.

Octarine got a reaction from Cuz in My idea of a Sonic RPG
A Paper Mario-like game would definitely be the ideal thing for a Sonic RPG. The battle system would definitely benefit from a few changes (ideally it'd be ATB-ish, with an actual party instead of main character + partner), but otherwise the formula could be copied blatantly and I wouldn't complain at all.

I think the biggest hurdle a new Sonic RPG would face is coming up with a storyline that's interesting without getting too much into the material from the mid-2000s games or, like Chronicles, just stealing the whole plot from Archie. It doesn't help that so many of the platformers have drawn from the well of RPG cliches already, either. I've tried to think of a few possibilities myself, but the end result is usually a little too dark and/or grand in scale for the kind of game a Sonic RPG ought to be.

...man, looks like I've been beaten to most of the ones I can think of. I tend to be a pretty mainstream gamer, so I can't think of too many hidden gems that I've uncovered.

One that I can think of, at least comparatively speaking, is Jade Empire. Sure, it's a Bioware game, but over the years it's been almost completely forgotten. Hell, I think more people remember Sonic Chronicles than Jade Empire, and not just here. It's a pity, because while the game has plenty of flaws (it's awfully short, the combat's a little short on variety), it more than makes up for them in other areas. It's a gorgeous game by the standards of the classic Xbox, it has a great soundtrack, the voicework is solid and the fundamentals of the gameplay are good. The story's a bit rudimentary, but it sprinkles in enough twists to keep things interesting, and most of the characters are unique and fun. Plus it's got John Cleese in it. And he gives you a musket. Which you can use. In a martial arts game.

"Don't worry if your favourite main characters were shoved out of the spotlight by Crabmeat and my Mary Sue echidna squad; you'll still get to see them as helpless damsels in distress with no lines! And don't worry, guys, there's no way I'll let them get turned into robots. Wouldn't want them actually doing anything, y'know."

Octarine got a reaction from Monkey Destruction Switch in What ever happened to Hyper Sonic?
There's nothing remotely interesting about Hyper Sonic. He doesn't have any unique abilities to justify his existence as a separate stage from Super Sonic and he looks pretty much identical; he's just even shinier and even more invincible, and that's boring from both a storytelling and a gameplay standpoint. DBZ-style super form escalation is absolutely the last thing this any series needs.

Octarine got a reaction from BlueArms86 in Your (least) favorite Sonic model?
The spines on that model are pretty awful, too. They're so droopy and skinny; Sonic spent that entire game looking like he just stepped out of the shower.

If there's anyone who isn't excited by the prospect of figure-skating bad guys to death as a magic sword-lady, there's a 0.01% chance we can still be friends. You might say the batteries in our friendship are nearly depleted, duh huh huh.

Although the most exciting thing about Fi possibly being in the game is that if somebody from Skyward Sword (other than Impa, sort of) shows up, it seems a little more likely that Groose might make it in. Fingers crossed.

Octarine got a reaction from kalion in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire [3DS Hoenn Remake, November 2014]
I don't think there's a character who's needed a remake redesign as badly as Brawly. He's still not the most interesting-looking Gym Leader, but at least now he's got a little texture to him. Having a gym that's an actual gym is kinda neat too.

Octarine got a reaction from Komodin in Hyrule Warriors (Legend of Zelda and the Dynasty Warriors sittin' in a tree! K-I-S-S-I-N-G!)
But... The Imprisoned is already in the game, and they're the same character. I mean, I can imagine scenarios where they might not want to use his true form out of fear that he might take over the whole storyline since he's the biggest, baddest dude there is, but it'd still be a little strange to have him make a physical appearance, but only in his weaker form.

Personally, I'm not especially fond of Demise as a character since he barely even is one, but I really like The Imprisoned's design. He's a little goofy, especially his jiggly toes, but he's just so pleasantly weird and alien. And kind of cute, actually; I wish there was a doll of him.

Octarine reacted to SuperLink in Rhythm Heaven Series.
I adore the Rhythm Heaven (or Rhythm Paradise as it's called in Europe) games, I actually prefer them to WarioWare for the most part simply because they're so unique and ingeni- nevermind those things could be said about WarioWare too, but the music aspect is something that can only really be described by trying it. I would honestly recommend that everyone try these games at least once, even if you don't like music, and especially if you've ever enjoyed WarioWare. I really super seriously hope we get a 3DS entry, I think the series is perfectly suited to handhelds and while I love both, I'd recommend the DS one over the Wii one.

Though.. if you only play the DS one, you won't get to see this beauty of a game.

Oh, and also, while I'm here..

    SOON.

Speaking of Oda's glorious keikakus, I'm a bit of the way into the Enies Lobby kerfuffle now and I have to admit the callback to Little Garden took me totally by surprise. I wasn't expecting those guys to come up again until the Straw Hats actually went to Elbaf.

Actually, I'm pretty impressed in general at how consistently fishmen and giants (and even that one half-and-half guy from Foxy's crew) have been showing up. I guess it's not that spectacular a feat, but you just know that if this was Akira Toriyama's One Piece there'd never have been another fishman after Arlong. Also he'd probably have turned out to be an alien from Planet Sashimi or something.

Octarine got a reaction from DarkLight in Season 1 | Sonic Boom: TV Series Discussion
I think it's a pretty clever compromise, actually. The TV series gets to be the pick-it-up-anywhere entry point, introducing new fans to the basics of the characters, while the game gets to tell a more in-depth story with higher stakes. Neither team has to worry about stepping on the other's toes, and kids who've experienced any part of the franchise will never have trouble getting into any other.

Not that I wouldn't have appreciated at least some mild continuity in the vein of something like Adventure Time, but maintaining a strict status quo hardly excludes Boom from being good (and likewise having arcs doesn't automatically make a show not bad, hello Sonic X). Honestly, I'm just happy that at least it seems like the games are going to try to do something meaningful.

...two meaningful somethings, actually, since apparently the 3DS version's going to have a separate story for once. So there's that?

Pardon me, I think you mean Supersugoiman. His ability to write about nakama-tachis is subarashii, and he can keikaku way in advance.

Jeez, though; when I try to stay awake longer than a full day I'm lucky if I can occasionally understand what people are saying to me. I think the reason even unpowered characters in One Piece are so durable is because Oda just assumes that every other human being is invincible like him. That, or he's using some kind of reverse Dorian Gray witchcraft so Zoro can do his sleeping for him.

It's been so long since Tingle was even in anything (unless you count Wind Waker HD, I guess) that I can't imagine any reasonable person in 2014 caring about his inclusion in a silly spin-off, even if they genuinely loathed him back in the day.

I mean, there are tons of characters I'd rather see, but that's because I like them better, not because I dislike Tingle particularly. I don't think I'd play as him much if he made it in, but I could appreciate a well-done Tingle moveset with a bunch of fun references.

I'm curious where this would fall on the budget scale compared to something like Pirate Warriors. Not that that data would actually mean anything to me or that it would necessarily reflect the size of the character roster in any way, but it'd be interesting to know.

I'm starting to think that Beedle's reasonably likely. He was already untooned for Skyward Sword and there are a million things they could do with his moveset. Plus he'd put every other character's voice acting into perspective. OHHHH! THANK YOU!

On the much less likely end of things, it'd be neat to see Oshus from Phantom Hourglass with some Wind Fish references tossed in. Or maybe Marin using the Instruments of the Sirens? Or the Nightmare(s) as a boss? Or literally anything else from Link's Awakening? Madam MeowMeow with a chain chomp?
