  1. I find the obsession of Americans and the US media with the British royal family to be quite bizarre.

There is this co worker of mine who is obsessed with the Royal wedding to the point where she thinks the bride doesnt love Prince Harry that much and that she can see it in her eyes.

No idea why Americans love em so much though.

Why do you find it bizzare that a country is obsessed with their monarchy?

Remember when MLP tried to cash in on one of the Royal weddings?

Because monarchy is ridiculous and archaic, its only reason to exist is as a tourist attraction

We're so used to a partisan head of state a country having a nonpartisan one seems glamorous, I suppose

believe it started in the 1930's when King Edward 8th(?) abdicated the throne so he could marry an American divorcee.

I took a journalism class while in the UK, and going from that it was easy to get the impression that 80% of British media is nothing BUT the royal family. Either that, or the teacher was a closet royalist who can’t sleep without first reciting the names of every woman Prince Harry has ever made out with.

...which seems very possible, in hindsight.

Just like how I find the idea of Americans getting really obsessed over anime to be quite bizarre.

I think the obsession is down to that they are glorified celebrities with some power and for the Americans, they look more classy than their Presidents. I mean a horse and carriage outside of a castle looks more fantasy than a limo outside of a church. After all the royal family haven't really done as much unlike the past where they really did rule the country or part of the world in Queen Victoria's case. Much of the obsession in the UK is also because of mainly "down south" and liking it because it matches with their traditions and to give ideas/stories to their female kids. I mean how many female kids have that fantasy of being a princess or marrying a prince? While "up north" outside of certain areas [ones with rich elderly people] isn't much of a thing. We just find it meh and no incentive like the previous Royal Wedding (a day off). People were rather be outside in the sun anyway and for here, its a rare opportunity. I mean putting it on 4 channels is just crazy and no one that I know watched it.

Besides as sad as it sounds, you'll never get to hear about Meghan whatshername ever again. Only reason why you still hear Kate Middleton er.. I mean the Duchess of Cambridge is because she's been having kids and the odd event or two.
