So Pony Life is here with the first two episodes:
    https://sendvid.com/snqqosb6
    https://sendvid.com/dnr2kxao
Oh boy, if you think some of the episodes of the main series had bad pacing with a 22 minute format, it's awful here in half the time. Not a fan of the animation and art style that feel simplistic and sloppy simultaneously while being frenetic esp. the backgrounds. The jokes and writing fall flat nearly every time which is bad for a comedy in any form, even some characterizations are over exaggerated for comedic effect but fail to deliver as well.
So MLP GO-Roar gets a Meh from me.

So yeah the movie...it’s pretty meh to below average imo. I genuinely found myself bored for most of it. It’s not terrible mind you, it’s not the trainwreck we were all thinking it’d be, but it certainly isn’t close to what I was hoping.

So right off the bat, yes, I’m a bit biased because I’m still not a fan of the live action direction, however with that said, the live action was never gonna kill it immediately for me. However, I was personally hoping for a more aesthetically pleasing live action take on Sonic. Something that compliments Sonic vs contrasts him. I was hoping for something akin to Detective Pikachu, a film that created its own original world and take on Pokémon in a live action environment. I appreciate those type of live action endeavors personally more than “drop them in the real world” stories. As it is, the setting came off super bland and uninteresting to me, not helped by the Green Hill Zone intro which gave the world life, and personality and visually kept me engaged. It’s one of my most wanted hopes in a sequel that they give us more visually engaging and interesting settings and locales that can compliment Sonic and friends. (It’s why I prefer animation for sonic cause stuff like that is easier to do) something akin to Unleashed’s world but translated into live action would be awesome. Problem is, that’s more difficult to do now that the world is established as reality, which makes me kinda expecting more of the same on that front. Again, much like detective pikachu, I kinda wish this film never had sonic be from a separate world, and instead Sonic and his friends just co-existed with humans. Then we possibly could have had more of a Sonic feeling setting.

Aside from that complaint of mine, the rest of the movie was still a bit dry to me. The humor was super hit or miss, the characters outside Eggman and Sonic did not hold my interest at all, and the story overall was as I expected, generic.

I’m fine with Sonic. At first I was offput by his radical difference to the game versions, but eh, this is their take. My only hope going forward is we possibly get a more mature Sonic in the sequels. I didn’t like all that much the hyperactive child like aspect of his character. Eggman’s alright, he’s Jim Carrey, so it really falls onto if you like his style of acting or not. If you do, you’ll like him, if you don’t, he won’t really make you feel much. I personally enjoyed him enough. He did Eggman justice.

its obvious love and effort went into this, I won’t fault them on that. It’s fun for the kids especially, and I’m happy it’s doing well, potentially opening up the way for a bigger sequel with more of a Sonic emphasis...but I can’t personally put this in my favorite video game films group. It’s better than most yeah on a objective front, but subjectively, eh. It just doesn’t stick in my mind all that much compared to a lot of video game movies that are objectively shittier.

$1 Billion? Eh, that's a bit of a stretch especially when in a couple of weeks when Pixar's Onward hits theaters on March 6, being a truer box office contender than Birds of Prey at the very least, and I'm sure ticket sells for Sonic probably run its course sorta speak.

No, Ben doesn't make a better Sonic. He reminds me of Jason Sonic, which I was never a fan of. I preferred Ryan over Jason and definitely Roger over Jason as well. If they would've reached out to either Ryan or Roger to play Sonic it would've been preferrable.
I like the same voice actors for serieses, it makes better sense to keep the same one. Mario has had the same for 30 years. Even the Japanese adaptations keep the same voice actors for decades. VA's only need replaced if something goes wrong. I think voices are iconic and shouldn't be changed so frequently. Especially when characters can be recognized by voice.
Example, what would've happened if they decided to replace Bender halfway through Futurama? It wouldn't be him anymore, it's an iconic voice. Dimaggio plays him perfectly.
Just like I can't see Joker without Mark Hamil.
Swapping voices all the time is not good. Please hire game and original voices.

Regarding the risk thing, I think the fairest compromise between the two sides of the argument would simply be that the answer is more complex than a straight blanket yes or no.
Was the movie risky in terms of Sonic's brand identity?  Yes - Obviously Sonic needed no more bad press, and the live action animation hybrid had risk of alienating fans.
Was the movie risky in terms of execution of the concept?  No - As said, the movie's humour goes for broad appeal and is rarely very clever, the plot is a pretty basic good vs evil, "real power of friendship" deal, the film does not challenge audiences in any way whatsoever (that's fine of course, not every piece of media has to be challenging to be enjoyable).
Was the movie risky in terms of budget?  No - or at least, my understanding is no.  The scope of the film was influenced by it's budget anyway and we know Detective Pikachu was much higher, etc.

The 2 x "No" and 1 x "Yes" here doesn't infer an overall "No" by the way, I think these three categories are fairly seperate from one another.

Saw the movie yesterday. It was exactly how I thought it would be, without any surprises. The only surprising thing about it is that it is actually getting decent reviews despite it's predictableness...
Also, I have to say that I don't think they got the character of Sonic even remotely right when compared to the video games. Sonic's defining character trait is that he is cool, but this version felt more like a naive child than a teenager with attitude. It also felt strange seeing Sonic being sad and upset so often, since in the games he is known to keep his composure no matter what.

Saw the movie tonight as well. It wasn't as terrible as it could have been. But it didn't feel like a Sonic movie to me. The ending credits was probably my favorite part. 😅 I'm curious to see what they will do with a sequel because you know it is happening. I'm surprised they haven't announced it already TBH.
I don't see this movie reaching 1 billion worldwide, but I could be wrong. In a way I want to be proven wrong because what a mind-blown moment that will be. 🤯 Sonic the freaking hedgehog is more successful as a movie star than in a video game.

I'm only going to post this one comment, because I know the film has received a lot of goodwill and a lot of people like it, even on this forum. But I have this one thing to say, it's very negative, and then I'll leave and not be a spoilsport.
But I'm very disappointed that so many people are on board with, by their own admission, an "okay" film which "doesn't take risks" and "plays it safe".
I want the Sonic franchise to be as excellent as it was in the 1990s and we know it can be achieved. The Tyson Hesse shorts, while marred by a low-budget, are exactly where visual Sonic media should be going. But now we are going down the direction of this mediocre live action nonsense.
Moreover, was this all that people really needed to get onboard? A redesign of the Sonic animated model? I must have been pretty gullible back then to think people had higher standards than just seeing a nice looking Sonic run around and be lively animated. Like I thought "nah, this redesign isn't enough for people, they won't just accept a mediocre film now that it has a better model". But it seems to be that way...
The film has made 70 million, a majority of Sonic fans are okay to settle with it and even the general public like it for the dumb entertainment it is.
I really have no faith in the future of Sonic going forward if they push in on this direction. The chances of Whitehead and EveningStar making a Sonic game are looking more unlikely and that was the only avenue of real hope I had. If the next game is going to be movie Sonic, which it very well might be with this general goodfeeling, then this franchise is fucking dead for good to me.

    Double Toasted Review:
After seeing this and some of the reactions here, even though haven't watched it, I feel that I'm in the camp that's less than positive because of how the writing and even action is weak and underwhelming, what you see from the trailers is what you get overall. Again, much of what I've seen from the trailers, adverts, and scenes really didn't click for me at all, not even much of the Sonic and Eggman stuff. Sonic feels like Deadpool's bargain bin Mini-Me who talks too much and still see Jim Carey as Ace Ventura in Robotnik cosplay. Tom and other human characters being total blah and uninteresting. The writing feels like it was regurgitated from the Hollywood family film formula machine that hits every check mark with (dated) pop culture references, occasional fart jokes, etc. (I honestly do hope this won't affect Game Sonic, I know the writing in the games aren't that great but still...)
I still believe we've been robbed of a better experience if it was fully animated where Sonic blends in and fits and interacts the environment better along with being less restricted in the real world. And more fantastical looking set pieces that he can interact with and show off his speed where better action scenes can take place. I just really hate things that are wasted potential.
Probably the silver lining here with the movie's success is that Sega might want to do more movies but not just milking this for more sequels. I'm thinking that we might get a separate fully animated feature film. Maybe not theatrical but more akin to the DCAU with direct to DVD/Blu-Ray or even Netflix/Streaming service animated movies that CGI or preferably 2D that might be experimental in terms of animation styles and genres and interesting to see how Sonic and friends fit into them (probably one of the only ways to have fan favorites appear). Steampunk Sonic, Into the Sonic Verse or franchise crossovers anyone? Hey, if Gotham By Gaslight and Batman vs TMNT can work, why not? But of course, Sega or whatever hired studio that attempts it need to have good writers and can't emphasis that enough (as well as less executive meddling and creative restraints/restrictions). It's the only thing that I'm hopeful about.
But alas, this is Sega we're talking about so...

Well the movie is what I expected: Not really good. It's not atrocious, but it's really nothing worthy.
Carrey was fine enough I guess accepting that his Eggman was really more about Jim getting to chew the scenery than anything otherwise. Didn't care much about Tom and he turned out how I expected him to be ("random White dude who gets to be Sonic's most important friend"). And the movie's Sonic is just Ezra Miller crossed with Deadpool dipped in Current Sonic, so if you don't care much for how he's handled in the games then I don't see how the movie fixes him.
With that posted, I find it curious that apparently the standard for somewhere like IGN saying the movie's "capturing the spirit of the franchise and being true to the source material" is that occasionally Sonic curls into a ball or picks up rings regardless of tonal differences or characterizations or including Two-Worlds. I suspect what it comes down to is these review outlets don't care about video games much and just might be soft on the movie. Let alone Sonic, which if they know about it they fall into the "ugh everything in Sonic outside of 1-2 games or his memes or SatAM is horribad" (even IGN, no especially IGN). So they're just rating it as a fine "family film" where Jim Carrey and Sonic do zany things. Remember Ace Ventura guys? Remember that movie? Remember those memes?

You might it sound it like DC's superhero films haven't been performing worse and worse from Batman vs. Superman up accounting for production costs. Especially Suicide Squad. Only Joker has been a smash hit, and it's radically different from other cape films anyway.

I don't know if Jim meant that Eggman didn't want Sonic dead. I don't really have an issue with what Carrey said in that interview on its own. However, I do agree that the all-caps response to what he said in the tweet is ridiculous. Jim's not really being that deep here. Treating this statement like it's some amazing revelation concerning Eggman's character is odd.

" JIM CARREY UNDERSTANDS THIS FRANCHISE! This is why Dr. Eggman/Robotnik never outright kills Sonic when he could, he just wants to beat Sonic for his own gratification"
Well, there it is...the stupidest thing I'll read all day.
If anything, that's more like Sonic if you ask me. He's the typcial "hero", hogging the spotlight for his own gratification, but never tries to actually stop Eggman from wreacking havoc again the next time and put who knows how many lives in danger (again). He foils his plans to be the "hero", but does nothing to stop it from happening again. Unlike typcial comic/cartoon heroes where they at least do the cliched "handing the bad guys over to the authorities to jail them", Sonic now on multiple occasions just straight off lets Eggman walk away. At least with the classic games, you had the sense that Eggman always managed to slip out of Sonic's grasp and get away. But for example in Adventure 2, they all just casually walk out of the ARK and all go on their merry way like nothing happened.

Yeah, that still thumbnail image showing Sonic's teeth and lips makes it less than appealing. Obviously still an improvement over last design but still, live action doesn't suit well with Sonic at all IMO.
But man, am I the only one didn't laugh at any jokes here? It feels very cookie cutter Hollywood Alvin and the Chipmunks/Smurfs level of quality with Sonic references sprinkled in. Probably the only funny thing is how James Marsden looks and feels tired and doesn't want to be there, wishing he was playing Cyclops for another X-Men movie.

"Cool" these days is saying random thing and not taking matters seriously. Jokes, however unfunny, are paramount. You see it a lot in super hero films where any time something serious is supposed to happen, one of the characters makes an unnatural quip to show the audience that they're not taking themselves too seriously.
This isn't supposed to be a "back in my day" kind of post; I'm just trying to say how things change. Having an attitude used to be cool, being dark and brooding is still cool in another way. The problem with being a cool character like Sonic is that trends change. What most popular though is being loud, quotable and memeable. Gotta be loud and constantly pointing out the obvious. The Sonic movie is going right for that kind of humour. Fuck, even the first line of dialogue we every heard from this film was "gotta go fast". Treading the line between cool and annoying is hard.
But yeah I do agree that this Sonic is incredibly annoying. "Hey look at this I took nine million steps today", "Whoop whoop!", the whole of the "world's largest rubber band ball" and baseball scenes. It's all subjective, but everything about this films take on humour and cool is a big miss to me.
