    That Sound

I first thought that as well but the fact that Sonic 1 and 2 don't have this sound made me reconsider it. But I don't know that much about how the soundchip in the genesis works, so I'll take your word for it. Thanks for the input Yeah I agree I have created a connection between the sound and my memories spending countless hours in my youth right through to now replaying the S3&K game across multiple platforms. I thought it might be more to it though. I thought, perhaps in some rose-tinted fashion, that it was a noise created specifically for those games like a moniker or tag, sort of like how certain locales in movies have little motifs in the musical score whenever they are on screen. Probably romanticised the music a little too much by thinking that, but hey, one can always dream. Thanks for the advice, I will look into that when I get home this evening. Cheers!
  3. Hi everyone, Got a few questions for you all. So basically, I was listening to the OCRemix Temporal Duality release last night and after finishing it, I decided to listen to Project Chaos because I was in the nostalgia zone. Hard. Apart from having, in my opinion, the most varied and diverse remix, Project Chaos has another thing going for it. It has one of the most iconic OSTs to base itself off. And after that convoluted intro, I get to the main point of my topic. So S3&K has a baller of a soundtrack, no one is going to deny. But there is one particular part of it that appeals mainly to me and I was wondering if anyone musically inclined or familiar with the process of the games production would be able to point out or identify the attraction that I cannot quite explain that well. The part or theme of the OST is what I sloppily refer to as "Angel Island Twang". Now I'll let that settle in while I post a few links that will outline what I mean. Now it's mostly (VERY) prevalent in Sonic and Knuckles, but it rears it's head in Sonic 3 a few times and once (to my knowledge) in Chaotix, I'll try and post the ones that stick out. Sonic 3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=df3X_yJs24E - Endless Mine http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Qw10LYqye4 - Marble Garden Sonic and Knuckles http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YF99oeiaznk - Mushroom Hill http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_T7hdIh-gtw - Flying Battery http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a7R3i6yEwRE - Sandopolis http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wo_4R17gYSY - Lava Reef http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=noxyx2_Wew4 - Hidden Palace Knuckles Chaotix http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sk_5LyHvVfo - Isolated Island You get the idea. So as in the above examples, there is a MIDI sample somewhere in there that carries across as almost a universal theme/chord, to me, that best exemplifies Angel Island. You can identify the music from that era/storyline/game more so from the MIDI style rather than acknowledging: "Oh, that's Mushroom Hill Zone from Sonic and Knuckles". You can hear the MIDI style is exceptionally, for lack of better words in my very limited Australian vocabulary; sloppy, twangy, boppy etc. Anyway, is someone here able to explain to me the process or style that was employed in this era that contributed to "That Sound". The twang is very mysterious to me and it instantly nostalgia bombs my brain the moment I hear it, be it in the original OST, remixes or in general music. It's sort of sentimental as well because it recalls a period in my life that was heavily Sonic focussed and has some great memories attached to it. Any help anyone can provide would be fantastic. Thanks in advance.
  4. Happy Birthday, TSS. 13 years young and still sitting pretty. Here's to many more years of Blue fans gathering and sharing the love.
  5. I'd expect the next game to be on the Wii U due to Sonic Team saying that Sonic is a perfect fit for it. A development kit for the Wii U has been out longer than those for the rumored Xbox and Playstation successors, so unless Sonic Team were blowing hot air I'd say that's the next one to come out. It would make sense as well if you look at their "major" game releases of doing a HD game then a Nintendo exclusive (mind you this is pure conjecture based on drawing connections of releases on consoles): Sonic 06 - Playstation, Xbox -> Sonic and the Secret Rings - Wii -> Sonic Unleashed - Xbox, Playstation, Wii (exception to the rule) -> Sonic and the Black Knight - Wii -> Sonic Colours - Wii -> Sonic Generations - Xbox, Playstation. There is a rotation of HD -> Nintendo -> HD -> Nintendo etc. and since we got our HD game last year in Generations, I don't think it would be a stretch to assume that the new game is coming on the Wii U. Again, this is an assumption but it's based on a pattern of releases. As for Tails being added into a more prominent role, I feel he is a good fit where he is at the moment if Sonic Team wants to keep their current game play format. Tails chugging along at Sonic speeds in games like Colours or Generations would be sort of universe breaking in both game play and story. Being a story crutch as he was in both mentioned games is his most natural role since the late genesis days. Whilst having game play in most major releases, all attempts at Tails game play felt unnecessary and rather... boring. As a character whose main trait is to act as a game play extension by adding a new element to the Sonic platforming formula (flight), it felt almost broken to be playing as Tails where flight didn't matter or enhance the overall game with exploration, a role delegated more to Knuckles as time went on which made more sense due to his Treasure Hunter status. I'm personally excited with the future of Sonic as a character given the right tone and treatment of Colours and Generations. Both games felt more like the team respected Sonic more so by not forcing a faux skater boy personality on him. Instead of being forcefully whored (for lack of a better word at my disposal) with said personality to try and be cool, Sonic felt more naturally... focused/calm in his personality instead of having a spastic demeanor. It felt less 90s and more Mickey Mouse. I understand this is not the best way to describe but that's how I felt. The whole experience felt a lot more focused and calculated than before with it's shotgun spray approach to appeal. As for game play, well, the last few years speak for themselves. It's been a recovery. Not a full one, but progress is progress.
  6. Sonic's personality and attitude as depicted in the games, cartoons, comics and books pretty much sums up the argument for giving him a voice. He's a hero who is so in love with himself he can't help but point that out and the easist way to go about it is to give him the power of speech. It's been well established/heavily hinted that Sonic has always had a voice. As has been mentioned, hardware limitations at the time simply meant he couldn't have one. If we can count the comics, cartoons and book released at the time of the genesis games as remotely canon in some form, you can come to the conclusion he was always meant to speak because except for the games, at that time, he sure as hell was a blabber mouth. As for C Sonic in Generations, I honestly don't care if he is mute or not. Whatever enhances the story or the game (if they seem hell-bent on having an over arcing canon, that is). It doesn't bother me. It could go either way. I wouldn't be suprised if by the close of the game he utters words of some kind, however.

    Storms

I fucking hate storms too, especially this kind: Worst storm there ever was!
  8. I bought this recently at the DVD jobber of Australia, JB HiFi about a fortnight ago after hearing what the series was about. Truth be told, I'd be waiting for something similar to Gantz to come around. I love the idea that every once in a while, Japan finally lives up to the stereotype of hyper violent sex laden cartoons. And it only happens once in a blue moon now days haha. So with all this in mind and reading reviews of rin on www.aintitcool.com and www.animenewsnetwork.com I found out Siren Visial (a small distributor in Australia. They do shit like Ichi The KIller etc) had licensed the product. I waited until the release date and ran to get it from JB before I hit the gym that day. Came home ready to watch it, and the Mrs tells me to wait because she wants to watch it with me..... WAT So now I am in a massive conundrum. She knows what to expect, but, at the same time, it's definatly going to be uncomfortable to watch together. I'm still looking forward to it though. Shit will be so cash. In other news, any NSW piggies coming to Supernova this year in Sydney?
  9. JB HIFI! My local one released Sonic themed Wii Yogo Matts the other day. Shame I don't have a Wii.
  10. Yeah, my assumption was it wasn't TSS but since I didn't have any other windows open I wanted to be sure of it and see if anyone else had gotten it *shrug* Keeping my B-Boy informed
  11. Hi everyone, I recently got the following malware message this evening while browsing TSS: I was wondering if anyone else had been getting the same message. In case anyone was wondering, the 2nd IE window is the actual virus message. I went to TSS, read the news article, then walked away for a bit, maybe few minutes, came back and this little bastard was there. Please be aware that even though you click "No" a new window will popup and still attempt to do something. IMMEDITATLY close this window and run a full virus scan on your PC. According to Security Essentials I am clean, but I dunno how long that will last. Anyways, anyone else been getting this shit? Admins or Mods know of any furschizzle? Cheers.
  12. I celebrated by running through the streets naked covered in blood and whoring myself to everything that had more than 1 leg. It was truly a wonderful moment.
  13. Trigun movie is going to rock my world! And yes I agree completly, the new theme song does sound a hell of a lot better. Sound production wise it stands very clear in contrast to the very old sounding version used for the TV show. I will admit, that was part of the songs charm, it sounded like a theme song for a late night guilty pleasure anime like Trigun because it sounded old and tested in terms of sound quality, but I am amped they remastered it like this, or re-recorded. Either way, movie looks great. Cannot wait for subbed version of trailer
  14. It isn't too general at all. It's spot on because thats what Shounen shows are stereotypically known for. You calling it a generalisation because other stories also employ these themes is merely because shounen stories are not very deep. Harry Potter isn't deep. Outlaw Star certainly isn't deep. Oddessey sure as fuck ain't deep, in fact, that's the least subtle and the most straight forward of them all. Shounen stories are known for their basic plots that are not complicated so as to cater to a broader young male audience. An audience not well known for their like or tastes of reading. And yes, we have seen graphic shit like that in Shounen series. Naruto stabbing his hand in episode 6 not graphic enough for you? Gaara squeezing the vital organs of ninjas while having it rain down upon him while he held their umbrella not graphic enough for you? Just because it shows someone being shot and brings forth a sense of "graphic content" doesn't automatically label it a show for adults, ironically it would make it more immature because it glorifies it more so by making the scene either over wrought, or over violent. It's a shock tactic to warrant a strong response from the reader/viewer to get the audience into the groove. You were never meant to think, hey, maybe the army isn't so bad. Your thoughts were: "Wow, shits messed up. Army can suck a chode." Guess what, teenage boys don't care for subtle approaches. They want to see people get their shit fucked up. FMA caters to this perfectly. Basically the author wasn't going for a subtle approach. She wanted to ellict a direct response that would reflect disgust upon the army. And yes, I would classify Samurai Champloo as a shounen series, most certainly. It definatly isn't a complex show, it's violent, crass and has tons of other themes that cater directly to the enjoyment of a teenage boy. The fact that older audiences can enjoy it as well is just a testament to the shows ability to get people to watch. Cowboy Bebop I am not too sure on because Bebop is believed to be geared towards a shoujo audience by some and shounen by others.
  15. Sword and the Sranger is a very VERY good movie. Slickly animated and a good story. You will enjoy. I love Fullmetal Alchemist. Roy ustang owns my piggie ass. I have an articulation figure of him because of his badassery. I was pointing out it is a shounen show because it blatantly is one.
  16. Sick lad. You didn't really respond. You more or less agreed except for how I defined the character. And I'm sorry, but current (near end) Ed is smart. Ed WAS stupid and naiive in attaining his goal. I wouldn't agree that he has the most character development considering he hasn't has much of a personally development arc besides curling into the fetal position whenever someone mentions "Philosphers Stone" or "Honehiem". That's a cheap cop-out. Thats Sasuke spec character development. He hasn't changed since Day 1 besides his goals. My point still stands, it's a shounen archetype. Once again, you didn't refute this makes it a shounen archetype. And the philosphers stone was a means to the end game, which is getting their bodies back. Which was the suppoesdly unattinable goal (in the FMA world anyways due to it being near impossible and taboo). I disagree. So far in this whole story, everyones actions seem to affect the Elrics in someway, negatively or positvely. Might just be a coincidence, but every decision seems to progress the story of the elrics forward. Granted, the Elrics are the main focus of the story, but that was my point. Everything in the world affects them in some way, no matter what. I should have clarified it better. Characters in this show exists soley to propel the Elrics further into the story because everything falls back to them, which is the whole point of the show. It all falls back to them. Once again, you did not refute my claim. It is still a shounen archetype, no matter which way you slice it. I was reffering to Roy Mustang. He is the other hero we are supposed to root for in the show. He is the shows hero's rival, but not his enemy. Vegeta begun the show as a enemy, but became a rival in the Namek arc, which is 1/3 into the story. Again, you did not refute my claims. That was kind of the idea. He is a relative of the hero, yes? He might not be a friend, but he is someone close to the main hero who has a motive for coming forward which MAY lead to the hero acting on this. (The show has not finished yet, we still don't know if Ed still has HoHo issues) What about the mass genocide of the Sayaiins by Frieza? As far as I remember, Frieza was a Dictator who nuked an entire planet because the Sayaiins has expended their worthiness. Totally no symbolism or political metaphor there right? Not scary at all watching an entire planet get blown to smitherins while thousands of soldiers in space melt and blow to bits from a death ray created by a talking, speedo wearing lizard man, And what about Itachi, acting on the rulings of the Villages military leaders in Naruto? He slaughtered his entire clan. In front of his brother. And then tried to kill his brother. What nightmare fuel? What about Lord Genome, the once proud hero virtually halting the very existance of humans and forcing them to live underground? Dude, when your kid is 16, he isn't going to give 2 shits what you want him to watch anyways. If he is in Australia, he has access to it freely because 15 is the threashold for the good shit here in Oz. Just because a current issue in modern times seems somewhat relative to a manga because of racial tensions doesn't make it so. That's your perception. There are plently of exmaples of it in any shounen manga. This was a foolish point to make. I didn't bring up Samurai X dude, you did. I agree, Samurai X is some hard shit to swallow for a kid considering it is a shounen series, but then again, you made my point for me without even realising. Just because that shit is violent and in your face doesn't mean it doesn't belong in a certain demographic. Cheers X3 Manga in general is perceived as a much more mature medium for storytelling. It's just that way. Harry Potter is about as in your face as FMA. And guess what, 10 year olds get into that shit. I did see the mascare of Ishval, and I've seen it a million times before in tons of different Manga and Anime as I pointed out above. That shit isn't new to this scene. At all. Yes, I read the last chapter, yes I saw what happened to Mustang, yes, I saw what Father got his shit all up in. Yes I saw the world ending. No, I don't think it's radical. Yes, I have seen it before in countless other forms of media aimed at young kids. It's not that bad.
  17. Dont get the 916x Summer Wars. The subs are out of sync and on top of Korean subs. I got the [uTW-TMD] release (they might have the bluray on offer by now) and it was 1000x better. If you liked The Girl Who Lept Through Time, it is well worth your while. You will love it. Not as deeply personal as GWLTT but it's much more entertaining.
  18. Yeah, the whole Naruto laughing did turn a tad fairy for my liking as well. I get what they were trying to do, but i reckon it would have come across a lot more interesting if Naruto took it deadly serious instead of mucking around. In terms of FMA:B, I agree in a way. I reckon it's well over rated for what it is, but, I will say I find the characters to be more developed than most shows at it's genre (shounen). I've read the manga as to what is coming, and it looks as though the show and the manga will finish very soon. Which will be sad to see because the show has provided lots of fun times over the course of the show. Onto things I have recently been watching: I finally got onto and finished the Berserk anime adaption. MY GOD was it intense. I loved it so much. Easily one of the greatest hyper violent anime I have seen. Gantz is still #1 in those regards (have yet to see Daughters of Mmenosyne) but Berserk was still up there. I have a few more lined up afterwards. I am starting Mushi-Shi this week, and after it I have Blood+ and Outlaw Star for after it. Also hit up Halo Legends on Bluray the other week. That was the best anime compilation of a western franchise I have seen. Kicked the ass out of Animatrix and Gotham Knight. But that might be my bias towards Halo.... The Arbitar one in particular ROCKED my world. OH OH OH! And the other night, acquired Summer Wars. Fuck. ME! That movie was so stunning and.... perfect. A summer blockbuster movie for the whole family full of heart, fun and action. The only bad thing about this anime is, YOU ARE NOT WATCHING IT RIGHT THIS SECOND! Watch it!
  19. Just realised the guy who voices Eggman also does a voice for a commander in the gory anime Berserk. And he uses his Eggman voice too. I lol'd.

  20. I'm doing alright Kosmos. Work kicking my backside up and down the street, but that is expected. You very lucky girl, T-Bird doesn't give up his merch that easily! Well done haha.

  21. Brain hurting. Your metaphor is confusing. DO NOT WANT! What were you trying to say then lol, just to calrify? I am intrigued.
  22. And I downloaded the Tengan Toppa movies off BSS the other day. They both end very differently, but they certainly do not lose that epic Gurren Lagann feeling of epic, win and awesomeness; all from the one show. I have only just discovered TTGL recently and holy shit was it a fun ride. Stupid, Silly, Epic, Action Packed and most of all, it was honest to goodness pure breed anime. It feels enthusiastic. It's so much fun to witness and you can get inspirational power form a show like that. And don't even get me started on whoever does the music. That is pure, unadultered AWESOME. You can tell just how worked up I am getting that this show is something very special, and if you haven't seen it yet, you need to get your ass onto it asap. He carried that show to be honest. With Gauren out of the picture, they needed someone truly fucked up. You had controlled chaos with Gauren, so they bought in WTF IM INSANE chaos in with the german doucher. When he started breaking Lin Fan's teeth with his gun, that was a great scene. Really showed he was kind of a nut case haha You will not be disappointed my friend. It is a very faithful and kick ass adaptation.

    Teens and Smoking

Wha? No matter what you do, if you compulsively turn to ANY activity after being stressed because it makes you feel good, that's addiction. You do it because it makes you feel good and you get addicted to that warm fuzzy feeling the activity brings you. Eating when you are stressed is possibly even more fatal than smoking. Over eating can lead to obesity, which can lead to cancer of the bowels and other vital organs. It can lead to breathing and circulation problems which rival emphzima. I used to smoke pack a day, and every weekend you'd see me on the soccer pitch, no worries there. This leads onto your other point about people eating when stressed/people smoking when stressed. You mentioned finances being a factor. Not really. A pack of smokes is $10AU. Unless you are hardcore piggie and go through a pack a day, thats only 10 bucks a day. Thats lunch. People who eat when stressed smash all kinds of foods. Buckets of Ice Cream, Pizza, Maccas (I realise I am only noting junk food, but if you find me a stress compulsive eater who eats only vegies or fruit you have every right to call me a dicknose). Thats a buttload of money on just food. And losing weight is a shit-ton harder than gaining it. Id say that eating when stressed is financially worse than smoking when stressed. Like you said, you do not know what it tastes like, just what it smells like. When people are addicted to cigarettes, they crave all things. The warmth of the smoke, the smell of it and above all, the taste, because thats the first thing they experiance. Flavour Country is the BEST country. As for why I started: Social smoker. People smoked and walked away from me when they did. I wanted to be part of the conversation. So I took up smoking. Tasted fine. Smoking got me a promotion to head chef XD Who says Smoking has negative affects on your life?!
  24. Please sir, may I have some moar? Or at least a download?

    Teens and Smoking

People who have never smoked and have not been exposed to the high craving of Nicotine will never understand why someone smokes. Former smoker here, saying: Unless they are smoking right in front of you and you are choking on their 2nd hand smoke, take no notice of it. It's their lives, not your own they are damaging.
