  1. I was at a used game store earlier and bought the PS2 version of Sonic Heroes. I was never even that fond of Sonic Heroes  back in the day and I know the PS2 version is especially poo, but it was only a few bucks so eh sure why not?

Besides, have you seen how fucking ridiculously expensive the Gamecube version is on Amazon? Holy fuckballs.

    1. Ferno

      Ferno

the PS2 version is janky af but its the version I got first and was my first 3D sonic so I can't hate it too much

later on I got the Gamecube version after finally getting a Gamecube in 2005 and the 60fps felt like someone took the PS2 version and hit fast-forward it was amazing

    2. Jingilator

      Jingilator

That's nothing compared to Battle for Bikini Bottom on Amazon.

      Seriously, it's over $100.

    3. Speederino

      Speederino

Heroes on Gamecube is $100 and that’s not including tax or shipping. Like wow I don’t care if it’s rare that game just ain’t worth $100.

    4. Soniman

      Soniman

Damn really? I bought a GameCube copy back in like 2014 off Amazon and it was only like 20 something bucks

    5. Speederino

      Speederino

Psssh wow, nevermind. That’s only the cost for a pristine, fully packaged copy. It looks like you can snag it at like $10 so uh

      look I’m tired okay?

Also this PS2 version looks pristine and is fully packaged so that’s still a difference.

    6. Soniman

      Soniman

      LOL well there you go!

    7. Ferno

      Ferno

maybe a new copy costs that much because Sega won't put the game on steam already so you gotta track it down physically on old hardware just to play it

    8. Soniman

      Soniman

If the game is after SADX it doesn't get re released

    9. Speederino

      Speederino

Hey now they did re-release Sonic Adventure 2

      once

      and only once

      so yeah

  2. I've been playing classic Outrun lately. This is a surprisingly good time and I hear that the 2006 sequel is really good, I'd sure like to get my hands on-

    image.png.ca42faf12c20105273565a1e2b70814a.png

    I mean...$40 isn't a ton but it still feels like a bit much for a 13 year old arcade-style game :U

  3. I’m trying out Phantasy Star II. Gotta be honest, so far I feel like this is a pretty good step backwards from the first. Although tbf, when I played that it was the Sega Ages version that made a buttload of improvements. So far I’m feeling like II needs an Ages re-release.

    1. Speederino

      Speederino

Even regardless of that stuff, I still think the presentation in the first was way better. I understand why the 3D dungeons couldn’t return, but why do the battle screens take place on a generic blue grid with no backdrops? And why does this look like a Master System game that got ported to the Genesis at the last minute? The simple style looked great on an 8-bit console but on the Genesis it really leaves a lot to be desired imo.

  4. Why can't Youtube remember where I left off in a video I closed out of like five minutes ago but will remember exactly where I was in a video I haven't watched in like seven years?

    1. Jingilator

      Jingilator

I think the real question is, why did YouTube think it was a good idea to dump the trash can in the history section for the sake of going to history controls on mobile?

  5. ..........damn it I kinda DO want a Genesis mini.

    1. Speederino

      Speederino

I have the majority of these games elsewhere but to its credit, this does have a good 15 or so games that aren't on any of the compilations I already own. And it's so easy to add even more to these things. I dunno.

Maybe I'll hold off until Christmas so I can at least have someone else spend the money 😛

    2. AlphaRuby

      AlphaRuby

Quite fancy a Mega Drive Mini myself, maybe for Christmas.

    3. Speederino

      Speederino

For me it just feels a little silly since I recently bought the classic collection on Switch; and even a Genesis-style controller to play them with. So it's kinda sorta like I already have a portable Genesis mini.

  6. I think I seriously need to delete Twitter off my phone for a while. >_>

    1. DanJ86

      DanJ86

      You spelt 'forever' wrong.

I'm serious. That cesspool is bad for your mental health.

    2. Speederino

      Speederino

Unfortunately, as a wannabe blogger and someone who could end up working in marketing someday, social media is a bit of a requirement in my life so I can’t *totally* get rid Twitter. But take breaks/make an effort to stop checking it so often?

      Yeah, I’ll settle for that.

    3. Panda Claus

      Panda Claus

I deleted my Twitter a few months ago. Not the best thing I ever did, but it’s certainly up there.

    4. NegaMetallix

      NegaMetallix

This is why I'm awfully selective with my time on Twitter. Spend too much time there and/or follow the wrong people, and you're basically asking for a bad time.

  7. I’ve been meaning to try the Yakuza series, just played Yakuza 0 for a little while. It was already up my alley with the combat system but then I got the big tough Yakuza guy to get *really* into karaoke and I think I love this.

    1. Sega DogTagz

      Sega DogTagz

      Judgement > Yakuza

But I think they are all pretty good.

    2. Crow the BOOLET

      Crow the BOOLET

Yakuza 0 became my favorite game ever after playing it for a while. It took a while but it earned its spot.

...And I was playing through Persona 5 around the same time too. That's saying a lot.

  8. You know how Nintendo Directs typically showcase a few little artsy indie games that I wager most people forget about the second a big reveal is dropped? That was pretty much the entirety of this.

    1. Strickerx5

      Strickerx5

It’s a weird trap all of the big three are in currently. They load a video up with only triple A and other well know franchises but then get criticized for not having anything new. Yet then they make something like this and people still are put off by such new titles.

It’s a lose lose situation lol. There’s a fine line in there somewhere that none of them have really found yet,

    2. Speederino

      Speederino

I think timing and the way they order their announcements is also important. If they had opened with the MediEvil demo and then showcased the other new stuff, it would have helped pull me in a little more at the beginning. As is, the two bigger things that people were anticipating were left untouched until the very end.

  9. L.A Noire is a good game but I’m not sure it’s one that needs constant re-releases.

    1. PaddyFancy

      PaddyFancy

But this is the VR Case Files.

  10. Whoa, I know Jedi Outcast is old and all but even so, the Switch version is only $10. That’s a fucking steal.

  11. In the interest of writing something that isn't just a review, here's a thing about why I kinda regret buying an Xbox One just a little bit.

    https://kennysroomblog.wordpress.com/2019/09/24/i-kinda-regret-buying-an-xbox-one-but-not-really/

  12. I am going to make it my life’s goal to one day beat Streets of Rage 3 on normal difficulty with no save states or cheats. I did it with Maximum Carnage, I can do it with this. Some day.

    Some day.

  13. During the Xbox One reveal, we were promised, and I quote, that "Xbox [was] about to become the new water cooler." Six years on and my Xbox One still doesn't dispense water or even cool it. Fuck you, Microsoft.

    1. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

We were also promised that the system was always online kinect was supposed to be mandatory. It's such a shame Microsoft goes back on their promises like this.

  15. This Sega kick I've been on lately has made me truly appreciate just how many great franchises Sega owns that they do absolutely jack shit with. But they do seem to be getting a little better lately. At least we're getting Streets 4 and Panzer Dragoon. And even a new Space Channel 5...as a VR exclusive dance game :U

    Still, though.

    1. Crow the BOOLET

      Crow the BOOLET

I was gonna point out how fun and colorful Space Channel 5 is but I really wish its new game wasn't VR.

It makes feel weird and poor.

    2. Speederino

      Speederino

OH and we did get a new Toejam & Earl, buuuuuuut I don't think Sega was actually involved with that from what I can tell? Not sure if that counts or not. Probably not.

    3. Speederino

      Speederino

@Crow the BOOLET That and I'm not really keen on it being an actual dance game. Like I get it, but...eh.

    4. Milo

      Milo

@Speederino sega wasn't involved with back to the groove, humanature studios has the rights to the series. sega only has the publishing rights to the first three games

      One day, Skies of Arcadia.

      One day, NiGHTS.

oh, but at least puyo puyo still gets consistent releases

  16. I just reviewed two Sega games, Team Sonic Racing and the fancy re-release of Phantasy Star (or should that be "phancy" re-release? Huh? Huuuuuuuuuuh? Wink wink).

  17. I definitely don't miss the days of shoehorned waggle, but I'm glad the Switch has brought back motion controls just a little. It's nice having them as an optional thing in, say, a racing game. And I wish every controller ever had a gyro option for aiming.

    1. Speederino

      Speederino

I know motion controls never really left during the Wii U era btw, but I didn't see a lot of games on there that really made use of the Wii remote (even as an optional thing). The joycons have helped make them semi-relevant again.

    2. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

Motion controls in racing have never been my thing. They're typically implemented pretty badly, and even when they're done when I simply don't like them as much as an analogue stick.

But aiming in a game like BotW and Splatoon 2? The motion controls perfect those control schemes.

    3. Speederino

      Speederino

I enjoy the arcade-y feel of them in racing, to the point where I even bought a dinky little Mario Kart Wii-esque steering wheel for my joycons 😛

Too bad the damn thing is so small that it cramps my hands

  18. I tried using my PS3 controllers tonight for the first time in quite a freakin' while, only to discover the analog sticks were oddly sticky. I did some research and apparently this might be a common issue now, as they're made from some kind of rubber that naturally degrades and becomes sticky after a while. Has anyone else here experienced this?

    1. The Tenth Doctor

      The Tenth Doctor

Yeah, mines has done that too. Was wondering why that happened.

    2. Jango

      Jango

Yep yep yep. And it's a drag to clean them completely. It happens with the PS4 controller too, but not as much.

    3. Speederino

      Speederino

I tried using some Goo Gone on mine and that seemed to help, just fyi.

Why would that be weird? That’s nothing compared to the kid with the FREAKISHLY HUGE HEAD!!! Why is his head so big? Whhhhyyyy is his head so biiiiiiiiiig???

I launched that pug into space!

  20. This is gonna be whiny but I need to vent as I’m pretty cheesed off at a bad driver I just encountered. I’m turning right, and there’s one other car coming from the opposite direction turning left. Except she’s not signaling, so I think she’s going straight. We both stop when we see each other, I let her go, ok.

This would have been a whatever moment, except she gives me a nasty look as I let her go. As I pull up behind her at the next stoplight, it turns green and she just sits there. And sits there. And sits there. I’m pretty sure it was 100% intentional as a little revenge thing, and that’s what really pisses me off (if it wasn’t intentional then WOW what a bad driver). If there had been an accident before, that would have been totally on her for not signaling, but she’s giving ME attitude >:U

Just...gah. So many people around here don’t use their turn signals and moments like this are exactly why that irritates me.

    1. Ferno

      Ferno

No one uses turn signals where I live and it pisses me off.

  21. There's a small part of me that would like to drag my Genesis out of the closet and hook it up just for the novelty, but it's hard to justify. For one, I'd have to go online and track down the proper cables since I don't have one that's compatible with a modern TV. More importantly, I just don't have many games for it worth playing. I have Sonic 1, Sonic 2, The Lion King, Animaniacs, and uh...M-Magic School Bus? Wooooo. And also a handful of hand-me-down sports games; that's nice I guess.

Now the Dreamcast, on the other hand...

  22. Played through the first Phantasy Star on Switch, I was so hooked that it only took me one day XD

Although I’m sure it would have taken way longer without the nice auto-map this version includes. I can only imagine some kid in the late 80’s having to draw out tons of big, sprawling labyrinths on graph paper.

    1. Speederino

      Speederino

I was also surprised that I was able to get through the majority of the game without help from the internet. Eventually I had no choice and yeah, oh boy, I’m sure glad I did. It takes a while but 8-bit era video game logic starts to rear its obtuse head a bit more towards the end.

  23. I mentioned a week ago or so that I knew next to nothing about the Saturn. I know even less about the Master System. I know it took off in Europe and especially Brazil (good lord you can still buy the damn thing there) but in North America the MS was barely a blip on the radar. I can't think of more than a handful of games for it off the top of my head, and even those are just ports. Kinda bad ports, for that matter.

    1. Cayenne

      Cayenne

especially Brazil (good lord you can still buy the damn thing there)

I think the international media outlets exaggerate this information a lot.

Yes, you can buy some Master System models here, but they are low-quality knock-offs with terrible audio quality that barely sell well. They are mostly bought by very poor families that want a cheap console for their kids and Sega/TecToy fanatics.

The PS2 and X360 are much more popular choices for people that cannot afford modern consoles (video games are very expansive in Brazil thanks to stupid taxes) since they can be easily modded and piracy isn't a problem here.

    2. Speederino

      Speederino

Ah. I heard they were plug-and-play as well. Either way, the fact that they exist in any form *at all* there says something, methinks. If Sega were to announce something like a Master System Mini here in the U.S, I think a lot of people wouldn’t even know what it is. Or worse, they’d hear the word “Sega” and just assume it’s a Genesis.

    3. Cayenne

      Cayenne

There's some plug-and-play models but they are horrid as well. I even had one but gave it to a relative after noticing the bad sound quality.

And yeah, to be honest, I think Sega lost a great opportunity to introduce the Master System to North America with the Mega Drive/Genesis Mini line-up. Giving some popular SMS titles or even a Power Base (an add-on that allows SMS catridges to be played on a Genesis) knock-off with games as a bonus could have been a good idea.

The SMS library isn't bad. Actually, I'd say that many games were very impressive for a 8-bit console. Some titles suffered with slowdown and flicker, but there's still many cool things too play. I think games like Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap and Phantasy Star don't get enough credit for what they did at the time.

  24. Trying out more Genesis games I’ve never played. Ummm...I hate to say it but I don’t think I’m a big fan of Revenge of Shinobi. Which sucks because I can tell people really, really love this game and I wish I could, too.

    1. Speederino

      Speederino

To elaborate more, it’s got that cheap old-school level design and enemy placement. I also don’t like how uber precise you have to be with the double jump, whenever I think I’ve finally nailed the timing it turns out nope, I haven’t. When the game is at its absolute best, it *is* a fun enough action game but it’s far from being something I’ll be coming back to over and over.

All that said, I have played a bit of Shadow Dancer and Shinobi 3. I think I’m going to like those a lot better, from what I’ve experienced.

  25. So Team Sonic Racing is fine. Just fine. I’m having fun and it’s nice having one of these games on the Switch, but I can’t help but feel it’s a huge step backwards from ASRT, which is a shame since that’s my all-time favorite racing game.

    1. Speederino

      Speederino

The team mechanic is kinda cool but a.) I’d rather not have to babysit other racers and b.) considering it’s the only real addition to this game I don’t think it was worth the trade off of losing transforming vehicles, tracks that change with each lap, or (especially) all the other Sega characters.

It’s still a good enough game on its own but yeah I’m probably not gonna stop being bitter about the losses. Not unless they announce an *actual* ASRT sequel somewhere down the line, anyways.

    2. TCB

      TCB

It is a step back from ASRT.

    3. Milo

      Milo

      >not unless they announce an *actual* ASRT sequel

i honestly won't be surprised if they're using TSR's numbers to nix the idea of a legit ASR3, TBH.

that and IIRC, the original team that made the first two games has gone on to other things. a few came back for TSR but that staff is mostly different otherwise.
