Now this is an argument I can't quite get with. The "not cool anymore" one. I honestly don't think "cool" has really changed all that much, at least not in the context what Sonic's supposed to be. Some people have this idea that Sonic's this lingo-spewing pseudo-rebel that likes every single "hip" thing only it was only hip in the 90s, when that's not what he is.
Sonic isn't so much defined by fads but by many things that have endured as "cool" for a very long time. Speedsters are cool, magic chaos powers are cool, cockiness is cool, break is cool, parkour is cool and Sonic freaking started the "animals with attitude" trend, it wasn't a fad he hopped onto, not that cartoon animals are somehow "outdated" anyway.
What's more Sonic is cool, he deals with shit, he's calm in a crisis, he holds himself with proud dignity.
The exact language and execution around it may have changed, but the right ingredients are there and I'd say the main reason Sonic isn't "cool" is more to do with various factors involving a couple of broken games,Sega losing the console war(sometimes the impression that you "lost" can be pretty harmful to your reputation), inter-fandom hostility, holding Sonic to a different standard because of the other factors, and maybe something else I'm missing.

Here's a few, ED's post actually reminded me of a few things.
Sonic characters have really good balance and coordination to start with, so they can hop on a hoverboard reasonably, Knuckles and Tails just kind of hopped on and got on with it, too. That said, Sonic himself is kind of an unusual case, he's been wing-walking ever since Sonic 2.
More on Sonic, he's a very unusual case, assuming he understands his environment as well as he traverses it, he's pretty intelligent, though it's limited in area. Sonic deals with balance, motor-skill, decision-making and other perception/processing related issues while flinging himself at objects at super-speed, which is pretty mean feat. The intuitive knowledge might not translate well into conscious knowledge, which is why he doesn't really mention it.
The way I see it Knuckles is gullible because he believes anyone can be good if they just try (that part I believe to have been canonically stated), but he also believes the inverse is true, anyone can decide to be an asshole, he sees the world as grey and finds it difficult to compartmentalize people into "friend" and "foe", he trusts everyone and the same time trusts no-one, he also has difficulty reading people's intentions so he's basically screwed.

I don't want "sonic teams up with himself" to be a thing again, and I don't like what it implies, one bit. I don't want a plot based on Sonic meeting himself, I don't want his character interaction to be with himself. This takes space, plot time and gameplay time that could be potentially used on other characters.

I've never been so disappointed to see Classic Sonic. And I can't believe that I'm saying that.
Like, holy crap this looks so cool. But Classic Sonic, please go away this time. You've got a home in Mania.

...oh come on, don't give me that look. You know rolling around all those lumps would be a real riot.

In all seriousness though, I do like it when stage tropes are mixed together into unlikely combinations, even moreso when they're actually done convincingly. Like a desert with lots of water features, Or a mechanical level overrun by nature. Or the obligatory grassy level as the penultimate stage in the game as opposed to the starting one. Hell, put all the special stages together and make an actual stage out of it, I'd like that.

Sonic as the streetsmart cheesy edgelord who has a good heart, Tails as the skittish but brave sidekick with a knack for building things, Knuckles as the slow-witted and prideful but honorable and reverent friend, Amy as a slightly off-kilter but generous sweetheart who always pushes herself to do better, Shadow as the unfunny antihero who can't seem to fit in and therefore makes any situation he's in hilarious, Eggman as the bombastic clown who has an anger problem but is also always 5 steps ahead of everyone else, and Big as the simple-minded outsider who loves nature and is kind to everyone.

Green Eyes got a reaction from Rey Skywalker-Ren in Sonic games you WANT to love/like
Sonic Heroes: I love the idea of team-based gameplay, having access to all the different move sets at once, going down different paths that depend on the character you have. I also really like the idea from a writing perspective, three characters going on an adventure together? Sounds like an opportunity to see characters bounce off each other. Message about teamwork? Yeah give me that Brot3 goodness.
A lot of the moves are clunky and don't get used(rocket excel, I'm looking at you), movesets between characters are too samey, the writing is contrived and it leads to some real awkwardness; characters fighting over nothing, Amy is creepy, telling rather than showing, TEAMWIrK YEA.

It's cool seeing new graphics and designs for stationary, clothes, and whatnot,  I really wish we were getting it for the main series, thesemight be just "examples of how the brand might be used"  but we've definitely been getting a lot more Sonic Boom merch than the amount of normal Sonic' merch we've been getting for a while now,  don't even think the amount of merch blew up like this with Generations. It's possibly because of demographics, that is kids tend to clamoring for toys and backbacks etc, while adults covet first4figures statues and stuff that was produced back in the 90s, I did think that there was plenty of kids to want that stuff, but maybe the fanbase is more heavily populated by adults than I thought.
At least we've gotten some nice trinkets from Han Cholo and there's gotta be some stuff with the next Sonic game.

Green Eyes reacted to Sean in Archie Sonic Main Discussion
Ignoring that Genesis was only conceived to celebrate Sonic's 20th (230 was originally going to come straight after 225) and thus has no bearing on the plot, it was a huuuuge missed opportunity at the time. An adaptation of Sonic 1 and 2, with the classic designs and game mechanics? Spaz and Yardley teaming up for the pencils? Sign me the FUCK up.
...except let's have Sally, Rotor, and Antoine tag along and drag Sonic down like a fucking ball and chain. And have Sally be this annoyingly perfect character who's only there for eye candy and completely forced yet totally nonexistent flirtatious chemistry between her and Sonic. And let's have the other two do nothing of worth except clog up the panels with way, way more dialogue than there needed to be. Also, while the artwork is good, the facial expressions feel very stiff. Sally has bedroom eyes in nearly every panel and it's kind of irksome.
The Freedom Fighters just weighed the entire Genesis arc down, full stop. I love that bunch, but if you're going to throw us some classic Sonic action then the least you can do is not shoehorn elements that clearly don't belong. And none of the characters' interactions with each other could measure up to the hilarious, and adorable, banter in Mega Drive. Just compare the two and it is a world's difference. It feels like Flynn didn't really know how to write classic Sonic at the time especially due to how heavily it clashed with the old Archie continuity.
I actually recently picked up the hardcover trade for Genesis. I wanted it due to the artwork, and because it had issue 230, which was great. But the story and dialogue just aren't good.
From the sound of the solicit, Genesis of a Hero sounds to me like Sonic: Genesis Take 2. And I really hope Flynn does these games good, this time.

Green Eyes got a reaction from Monkey Destruction Switch in How Sonic relates to and inspires what you do in your everyday life
I believe the sonic series kind of instigated quite a lot of good things in my life.
Most is a little more indirect, Sonic as a character is a part of what introduced me to break, and to a lesser extent capoeira. I aspire to Sonic's ability to let go of the past, accept transience, act instantaneously and stand up for what he believes in, even if that sounds corny as hell :B
I've also been inspired to draw.
The Sonic series largely inspired me to join Second Life to contact other Sonic fans and see their virtual stuff. Then the SL Sonic community had pretty much emigrated to Mobius Grid and took me with it.
SecondLife and Mobius Grid got me interested in 3D modelling and texturing. The modelling, of course, was also pretty Sonic-inspired, and I've been making simple shapes like rings, chaos emeralds and whatnot. I 'm kinda wanting to keep the identities separate for now though.

I've tried to get into other stuff but it just doesn't happen, I rarely have it in me to replay a game if it's not Sonic, and characters never really seem to mean the same kind of things to me.

Green Eyes got a reaction from Writer's Blah in Good Things About Bad Sonic Games.
I really like the idea of team-based gameplay, as seen in Sonic Heroes and Rise of Lyric, I think more closely resembling something in Sonic Heroes, which I do think was pretty fun to go through once at least .
I like the idea of swapping between the characters different powers and personalities, seeing them interact and go through the story together.
I kind of liked the chemistry between Amy and Elise, and Amy and Silver, I think Amy was pretty cute in Sonic 06.
Shadow was a bloody badass in 06.
It actually makes me ponder at the possible implication that Shadow make take Sonic's role as "the hero" as he outlives Sonic, out of the disgust he expressed for evil and some of the Christ-like symbolism between him and Mephiles, suggesting Shadow as a persecuted savior. (OK, I agree Shadow was a bit sue-ish in this game, but otherwise...kind of interesting) It goes to show that Shadow refuses to be pushed back where he started and is ready to wipe the floor with a creepyass evil half-god.
    Also I kind of like the idea that they were "going for" with Sonic's character, and his friendship with Elise;
Sonic takes the role of supporting Elise, he seems more openly caring and gives thoughtful advice to her (though kind of awkwardly written) and seems to represent a theme of transience, focus is put on the briefness of Sonic and Elise's friendship and he is associated with the symbolism of wind and cherry blossom. He dies and is reborn. When the story comes to the end, Sonic is there to help Elise let go. He's has always been a character of the moment and of the present, and it's interesting to see it utilised in a way that's a bit more chill and thoughtful, and used to guide another character, rather than just kinda...yolo. It's a shame that this is kind of all they did with him in this game, leaving the rest of his character at the wayside. I do think it marked a shift in Sonic's character though, and that this kind of angle is utilised in SatSR, Sonic Unleashed and SatBK also, where they actually didn't decide to forget the rest of him.
    This is pretty cool.

Green Eyes got a reaction from Monkey Destruction Switch in If there was a humorous take on Sonic, aside from Boom, how do you think it should go?
I'd exaggerate the characters, but I'd like to try and exaggerate or play with as much of their personality as I can, and not leave anything on the wayside.
Sonic has a mouth smarter than he is, he snarky and cheesy and all that good stuff. Though on the general whole Sonic's a genuinely confident guy, he largely behaves in a way that he considers "proper" for a radical dude such as himself, and he can be goaded to do things if you challenge or blackmail his pride(though if you challenge his speed you better have proof or he'll just laugh). This also seems true of Boom! Sonic, but I don't think they really utilise it in a way that's all that funny, he gets called chicken and the deed gets done, or he starts whining about how something's going to hurt his street cred, too easy, not creative enough.
Knuckles is the one that's 100% done with everything, Sonic has his moments but it's mainly Knuckles' thing, he'll spend a lot of his time being annoyed by or pretending to be annoyed by others(he cares more than he lets on). Knuckles is the one to groan at Sonic's jokes and posing and tell him he's an idiot. He's far from innocent though, and is pretty egotistical and goadable himself. And gullible.
Sonic and Knuckles bicker over silly things, will pretend not to care about each other but do, get up to dangerous and ridiculous games like they do in Boom.
Boom! Tails is perfect, he doesn't need to change, perhaps throw in a bit of captain obvious occasionally.
I think Amy is a little bossy and bratty, and that can definitely be an angle to use, but I don't like the way it's handled in Boom, she comes off too much like a naggy housewife when I think she should act more like a "spoiled sweet" child. Amy's character should be a bit too "familiar" with everyone, kind of like she was with Elise and Silver (and is with Sonic), I think that could be amusing to watch.

Green Eyes reacted to Nepenthe in If there was a humorous take on Sonic, aside from Boom, how do you think it should go?
I find the question weird because we've already had other humor all throughout the franchise before Pontaff and Graff came along specifically to write the franchise as a comedy first and foremost. Physical humor, slapstick, and character and contextual humor could be seen in games like Sonic & Knuckles, the Dreamcast Era games, the Riders series, Unleashed, and even 06, and it all did its job in providing levity and fun to the proceedings. Sonic being cheeky and tapping a dead robot off a ledge, Tails making a Captain Obvious comment, rivals and villains like Storm being unnaturally polite in the heat of an argument, Chip doing something interesting yet completely irrelevant to the point of the scene in the background, Sonic annoying the shit out of Shadow, general trash talking- there was humor and lightheartedness even in the darkest of games.
So basically, if I were to make a humorous take on Sonic, I'd just write the series like it was written beforehand.
