This'll be a matter of preference, but I want that kind of collectibles to be as out of the way as possible. My favourite Red Rings in Sonic Colors were those that required doing something completely different than just getting to a certain path (like that mid-air Laser maze in Aquarium Park, it was hard but satisfying). Otherwise, as you said, the items might as well not be there. I want incentive to do unusual things.

Still, it's not like the series won't be open to change at all in the future. They've said how much they want to emphasize Sonic returning to a quality series now. And they've given us some idea that they aren't just covering their asses by working on quality games like Mania and taking their time on entries with newer titles like Project 2017 and Fire & Ice. Perhaps bringing Sonic back to his action routes from past titles over the comedic route is also an incentive for them, now. You never know...
All I'm saying is Sega are giving me a reason to be positive about this series again. So even if something like Flynn being the writer didn't end up being true, it's not the death of Sonic for me. They have some good looking stuff in store for Sonic here, which I think could open positive possibilities for Sonic's future.

I've been playing Final Fantasy VII for the first time, somehow I've made it this far in my life without ever playing it.  I like the cyberpunk setting and I can see why people are so attached to it, but I don't like the lack of customization.  I typically prefer the FF games with job systems in them, and the materia system doesn't seem to fill that role very well.

How different is it from the Wii U version?  I didn't like Lost World on the Wii U, but I've been considering the 3DS version since a lot of times the portable sonic games turn out to be completely different from the console versions.

My sig is the literal Spanish translation of "Sonic the Hedgehog", which also doubles as "the sonic hedgehog", sonic as an adjective. I usually don't like literal translations, but I think this one sounds really well.
My current avatar is just Classic Eggman, not much more to it.

The thing is that Iizuka has been repeatedly stating that the game won't be a sequel. we don't know if he meant it story-wise, gameplay-wise or both. I'm currently baffled because I can't imagine Classic Sonic being there without any connection to Generations.

The Drop Dash would like to have a word with you.
If there are any other new items/mechanics, I don't at all expect a new shield type, it'll be too much of a hassle. But, would you like it if the Thunder Shield could 'zap' underwater enemies upon losing it on contact with the water?

Wishing you the best luck with this project, even though I'll be unable to help...
Sunset Park act 3 is one of my favourite moments in 8-bit Sonic, and in the entire series, too! Too bad we've never seen anything similar since then... Just imagine a current-gen, full HD Sonic game where you get to chase Metal Sonic along a moving train and then fight him!!!

    Hey Sonic Stadium
What with people doing things for Sonics 25th anniversary I thought I'd join in and celebrate with an old project I thought up a while ago, and would love to make the project come to life. Its an animated cinematic movie of the Sunset Park boss from Sonic Triple Trouble. It'd last around 3 minutes and would be about the boss fight with Sonic and Robotnik on the train, with more scenes added than the game fight.
I got inspiration after hearing a remix for the Sunset Park boss by NicoCW and would really love to have the video be created. My current goal is to find an animator to help bring the video to life, though it may be tricky since I have never done this thing before, but thats where this website comes in. I decided to post to let people know about my project and if possible would love some feedback or even some pointers on what it may take to get this project going. To see more details and a storyboard, I made a website for it: http://thewingedmater.wixsite.com/sunsetparkmovie
    The remix also is here:
The song will play throughout the video
Thank you all for your help

Sonic Colours Wii's implementation of the boost -limited resources you have to actively seek, rather than being everywhere- would be ideal... as long as the 3d sections aren't just long, empty corridors with zero challenge and zero exploration factor, as is the case in that game. With the level design of Modern Sky Sanctuary and Seaside Hill, however, some interesting and fun levels could surely be achieved.

If Project 2017 is that "New 2015 title", then a lot of things may have changed in these extra two years. The recent restructuring at SEGA may have altered Sonic Team's direction for their current project.

I've had some great times with the Game Gear Sonic games (yes, GG, I like the extra challenge!). My favourite games in order are Triple Trouble, Sonic 2, Tails Adventure and Sonic 1:
-Triple Trouble is extremely ambitious for an 8-bit game: it has Knuckles cutscenes, lots of varied gimmick, including personal series favourites like the Sea Fox, interesting special stages with battles against Nack, and what I believe is the first ever Metal Sonic battle! -Sonic CD wasn't a battle-. The only thing it's missing to be perfect is a playable Knux and a proper good ending.
-Sonic 2 is also really ambitious, especially in comparison with Sonic 1, since it's all-original and totally different from the MD game. It introduced interesting gimmicks such as the hang glider and the bubbles, has great music and levels such as Aqua Lake and Scrambled Egg are personal favourites! Last but not least, the battle against Silver Sonic and a proper reward for collecting all Chaos Emeralds, unlike in all other 8-bit games.
-Tails adventure is a beautiful and really expansive game that portrayed Tails as a total badass! Combining Metroidvania with traditional, albeit slower Sonic platforming was a great idea, and I'd be willing to try another Sonic game of this style if SEGA was up to it.
-Sonic 1 had a better level roster and music than the MD game, IMO. Too bad the controls made some part a bit harder than necessary and, being the first game, it was still too basic (the same problem I have with the MD game).
As for the other games: Sonic Chaos is amongst my least favourites due to how extremely simple it is, even more than Sonic 1, there's nothing interesting or stand-out in that game. I actually prefer Sonic Blast over it, because playable Knux, 2.5D look and secret final battle. Tails Skypatrol and Sonic Labyrinth had me stuck for a while, but I enjoyed them when I learned to get past those points.

One thing I'd want in Sonic Mania is a better balance between the Flame, Thunder and Aqua sields, since in Sonic 3&K Thunder was almost always the best choice. However, I know that's very hard to pull off, since rings are everywhere but fire and water cannot be put everywhere.
