Scar got a reaction from Milo in Should SEGA get a new Sonic Team all together? Warning: Possible Forces Spoilers
Most of the grunts who make the games can stay. They're all more than competent developers. There does however, need to be a serious change in the creative department and game design department. Somebody with vision and ambition need to take the reigns here, and put all the undoubtedly talented developers to work and produce something great.
You see the amount of love in Odyssey? I want that in a Sonic game. A game which takes simple mechanics (based on the classics) and produces levels that allow creative use of those mechanics to complete levels/objectives.

Its not really self entitlement to be brutally honest.
Its simply just being cognisant of the fact that you are very likely to end up disappointed in a product made by Sonic Team. The last time this didn't happen was a year shy of a decade ago, and even that game; Generations, was barely an 8/10 to the wider gaming community.
You are more than welcome to think what you will of pessimism and cynicism. That's your prerogative. But in the case of Sonic the Hedgehog, its not even cynicism or pessimism any more. Its just realism. I have simply lowered my expectations of what Sonic Team are actually capable of. They can say whatever the fuck they want, but words are wind. After 15 goddamn years of disappointment I want some evidence.
And just as you consider cynicism pointless, I consider blind optimism and faith in a team with a suspect track record to be nothing short of naivety. And naivety is in many ways worse than cynicism. It leaves you blind to reality. More than cynicism, it is actually the vector for stagnation.
I used to be the same way. I used to hear some nice words from Sonic Team. They've learned their lessons. They're taking their time with game development. And I used to hopelessly believe that it would yield in some progress. It did not. I just can't be bothered to give Sonic Team the benefit of the doubt any more. No matter what they say. As I've said. Words are wind. I want to see results now. And not just one game. String a few 8+/10 games together, and then maybe I'll be a bit more forgiving.

Its not self-entitlement, cause I'm not really making any demands. The sad reality is I frankly do not care as much as I used to. I don't have the energy to get excited or optimistic about Sonic any more.

The Sonic franchise is basically stagnant. It hasn't moved forward in any meaningful way since....Sonic Colours really. Everything since then has been tinged with an excess of nostalgia, and sorely lacking in any substance.
The only game to not do this was Mania, but that game is still ultimately playing on Nostalgia, even though it has the technical and creative substance behind it. It at the very least attempts to take what Sonic 3 and Knuckles built and expand on it in some way. New levels, new mechanics, and a return of long lost characters with new play styles.
But even with all that its cashing in on "the classics were great" mentality - perhaps reminding all those dumb bandwagony fucks that yes, Sonic was indeed good back on the Genesis/MegaDrive.
The actual 3D 'main series' games have gone backwards since Generations. Lost World was a cute little attempt at trying something different, but it seemed a half-baked attempt that was criticised just enough to put the fear into SEGA to go back to Generations' playstyle - except in Forces it was worse in every meaningful capacity.
If I were Iizuka I would be pretty jaded about the whole situation.

Scar got a reaction from DryLagoon in Sonic Forces Development Speculation (Spoilers)
How about don't make any 3D Sonic game for another 5, 6, 7 8, 9 or even 10 years. Seriously fuck it. Just have Mania 2 or some shit to tide over and leave the franchise to sit for a while and rest.
Clearly most people at Sonic Team are out of good ideas, and are trying to hard to please every different niche that they end up actually pleasing nobody. Mayor D's post makes it sound like they were going to make a semi-spinoff-y RPG with a character creator and the main cast taking a secondary role. This was not taken to well, so the whole thing changed into a boost game with random crap thrown in for banter.
I don't like it. SoJ and Sonic Team came up with this craziness and got rejected by SoA and SoE. Why did these ideas exist in the first place? Was it some good old fashioned SoJ focus testing, or did someone at Sonic Team just want to make an RPG-esque game set in the Sonic Universe? Fucking crazy!
SEGA of Japan and Sonic Team need to stop and reconsider what in the fuck they want out of a Sonic game. I remember that one interview where they said they're looking to learn from Mania. Fucking do that. And don't just go skin deep with that examination. Really try and understand at a fundamental, mechanical and design level. Also go back to and look at each classic game and learn what was good and bad from those. Play Super Mario Odyssey and learn from that too.
They need a break. Play all the previous Sonic games and figure out what's good and what's bad. Play other franchises and see what you can learn from how they approach their game design. Try and see how Nintendo adapted Mario from 2D to 3D and see if you can get inside their heads and understand what design decisions they made and why.
Then once you have a full grasp of how you want Sonic to operate in 3D, come up with a game engine and play around with it. Play around with the extended cast and what abilities they should have to differentiate. When you know what kind of game you want to make, get some actual writers, be they anime writers or English writers - whoever. Just get some actual writers to write a story. Give them a good understanding of what you want the characters to be like and tell them to go ham. Then make the game. Make it like Nintendo made Odyssey. Make it with the care and attention that went into constructing the non-gameplay elements of Unleashed HD.
I don't care if this learning process takes 10 years. I would rather wait 10 years for a really great Sonic game, than 2 to 3 years for a half-baked, focus tested, chopped and changed piece of shit like Forces. I don't care if some fans are disappointed that they aren't getting a 3D game every other year, and are salty about all the Whitehead/Stealth Mania 2D games are being churned out. When the wait is finally over, I guarantee if the game has been made with love and creativity, they won't be disappointed.

...and making them animals would help somehow? That's more down to how they're written than anything. It's not like making them anthros in Forces did much - they were arguably even more generic there. At least Unleashed's humans had character.

Scar got a reaction from Milo in Think we'll get two Sonic games in 2019?
Personally think that a character creator in a game that is centred around a videogaming icon. A mascot upon which a company built its fame. That is a mistake. I'd have no problem with the character creator being put in an RPG spinoff or something, but in a main-series platformer? When you add in the fact that the Sonic franchise has lacked any real identity since 2011, and its just muddying the water. What is a Sonic game, if any random character creator can waltz in with a half-baked gameplay style and take centre stage?
I ask this. Would you ever see a character creator in a mainline Super Mario platformer? Say a hypothetical Mario Galaxy 3, or Odyssey 2? They might introduce a new character or mechanic or powerup as a side function, but nah, no character creator.

Scar got a reaction from Miragnarok in Even Yuji Naka didnt want a cutesy funny Sonic
I don't recall any recent Sonic games trying to make Sonic cutesy? So I don't really understand where this is even coming from. Yeah they've been taking the angle of more self-aware and cartoonish approach, but that isn't really the same as being cutesy.
YMMV if you don't like Sonic being a somewhat unfunny Ryan Reynolds wannabe. But its not like any of the other interpretations of Sonic have had stunning characterisation. SA1 Sonic was basic as fuck and had honestly laughable dialogue. SA2 is better, but that isn't really saying much. Heroes through to 06 is such utter garbage that its not even worth thinking about to be brutally honest. Unleashed and SatBK are probably the best iteration of the semi-serious Sonic, but still brought a lot more self-awareness and levity to the party than the ridiculously edgy nonsense that came immediately before it.
What ultimately matters is the quality though. If a genuinely talented writer came in and produced a Pixar quality story where Sonic and co were cutesy, it would still be better than literally every other Sonic story that has ever existed.
I personally don't care which direction they take, though I certainly have preferences. All I want is genuine effort and passion put into producing something of quality, instead of half-assedly attempting to target some niche segment of the massively fractured fanbase. If its just really fucking good, it has a better chance of satisfying not just existing fans, but attracting more people to the games as well.

To be honest, I actually prefer it to the one that's used since Sonic 3 and Knuckles (not that I dislike that level complete theme, its also great). Feels like its got a "Good job, we cleared the stage, but there's still a long way to go till the end" vibe going for it.

Scar got a reaction from Milo in A 2.5D Only Sonic Game: Would You Buy It?
I don't mind, as long as it has the minimum effort of Generations Classic Stages put into it. Those stages were absolutely popping with life and detail and it was wonderful.
Personally wouldn't mind letting Taxman continue with his pseudo 32-bit 2D Sonic, but would actually really love for them to evolve it into like a hand-drawn sprite based 2D sidescroller. Something like Rayman Origins/Legends. Still broadly flat and 2D, but with beautiful high-res, handdrawn assets rather than the current 16/32-bit-style assets.
Ultimately anything that isn't the pre-rendered garbage that Sonic 4 E1 was, is absolutely fine. But a 2D high-res sprite based evolution of Mania is ideal for 2D games imo.

I don't even understand how they managed to make him look so gross. Like, he's legitimately visually repulsive. I thought I had actually started to get used to the design but no, seeing it in motion is so much worse.
Carrey's not quite nailing Eggman but he's at least bringing the level of energy and eccentricity I'd expect. He'll probably be the best part of the movie considering Sonic is an abomination and nobody else leaves any kind of impression so far. Still don't know why he looks like that for most of the movie when they actually came up with a pretty decent look for him in the last shot though.

The only nice thing I can really outright say is the final scene with Eggman is perfect - but also that’s apparently just right at the end of the film, so we can’t even have that.
